In Lexington, the president of the group said she couldn't believe how many came as she thought it was not advertised much.
It is a good thing if there was limited space. If it was more well known, you'd have to move it to a stadium. Once word starts to spread that Obama is coming, the people come from all over by droves.
If they advertised Obama was doing a rally somewhere for a week and it was well known, that place would see half it;s population come out to see Obama.
I know he hates the tag rock star but, he draws people like one. Only thing is rock stars have to put on a very exciting show and really be full on for over an hour for people to want to come.
Obama just has to come to speak. That is the power of the man.

I agree. Something should be developed (don't know if its out there already) for us that would like talking points to share with our friends, families and community leaders about Obama. In NJ there are many local community organizations I know of, that constantly push the same exact message as Obama, but dont really know who he is or what he stands for, other than that he is running against Hillary for the nomination. If we had some talking points we could use them when talking to folks and get them tuned into what he is all about. I am sure once they hear his message once, that's all it will take, that's all it took for me.

You are so right about young supporters becoming lobbyists to enlist their parents and friends to vote for Barack. I think we need special training in this area on how to win over family members, particularly our parents in helping them understand that Senator Obama is qualified, well-educated.... and capable of handling the affairs of this country as President. I have had a hard time trying to convince my mother of this. Because of the turmoil and all of the problems this country is facing, she doesn't think he is ready to become President.

I think the problem with older parents is that they're not hearing about the work Senator Obama is doing throughout his grassroots campaign/movement #1 - because they don't use a computer, and that they only hear the opposite in the media of what he's actually doing on a day to day basis. #2 - They don't see or hear about all of the support he's getting like you and I. I'm sure they'd feel different if they learn more about his leadership and qualifications. That's why it's up to us as young supporters.... enlighten our parents everyday (until it's time to vote in the primary and general elections) about Senator Obama's candidacy and what his plans are on important issues, particularly the ones that affects them. Thank you for bringing up this issue about our parents and friends. We've got work to do.

This is a review on a book about the Democratic Party and and how it is being changed through blogs etc.
Right wing talk radio makes me sick, literally, but it has done a tremendous job in uniting the Republican base: Everybody is brainwashed the same way, at the same time.
Blogging is fun, and often you find interesting links. But: Is the net really uniting us? We need to make sure that we understand the issues and speak with one voice. And somehow that just does not seem to be the objective of the Internet. However, I am not quite sure about my theory - we all support Obama.

Sometimes , i'm not sure whether my fellow Obama supporters understand how much of a problem the'inexperience' theme being pushed by the media is hurting him.

While the inexperience theme will not make current supporters run away , it could definitely halter Obama's potential to pick up more support because some voters will not consider him for it.

Although we all here agree that Obama has enough experience , the voters looked at experience as 'having Washington D.C experience'.

Obama will have to run against Washington and hope voters will disregard Washington experience.

Honestly, there is no way I would support a Hillary/Obama ticket and it would take a lot of convincing from Barack for me to support a Obama/Hillary ticket.

To me Hillary is flat out unfit to to be in that position of power (President or Vice).

I agree. I didn't donate for awhile because I heard a lot about Obama and Hillary on the same ticket and I didn't want to contribute anything until I was assured that wan't going to happen.

Coming to this website and following Obama and his speeches and positions finally made me realize how much I agree with what he is doing and I donated to the campaign.

I have to think there are others like me who may still be uneasy about the those rumors. If they can be dispelled, I think it will help.

Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro is tipping Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to team up and win the U.S. presidential election.

Clinton leads Obama in the race to be the Democratic nominee for the November 2008 election, and Castro said they would make a winning combination.

"The word today is that an apparently unbeatable ticket could be Hillary for president and Obama as her running mate," he wrote in an editorial column on U.S. presidents published on Tuesday by Cuba's Communist Party newspaper, Granma.

At 81, Castro has outlasted nine U.S. presidents since his 1959 revolution turned Cuba into a thorn in Washington's side by building a communist society about 90 miles offshore from the United States.

He said all U.S. presidential candidates seeking the "coveted" electoral college votes of Florida have had to demand a democratic government in Cuba to win the backing of the powerful Cuban exile community.

Clinton and Obama, both senators, called for democratic change in Cuba last week.

Castro has not appeared in public since intestinal illness forced him to hand over power to his brother Raul Castro in July last year.

He has turned to writing dozens of columns and essays, but rumors that his health is worsening or that he may even be dead have swirled through the Cuban exile community in Miami in the last two weeks.

Castro's only reference to U.S. President George W. Bush in his latest essay was to say that he "needed fraud" to win Florida's electoral college votes and the presidency in the fiercely contested election in 2000.

I don't think we have to worry about a Clinton/Obama ticker. I noticed that after the last debate in Iowa Barack turned to shake hands with Hillary and she turned her back to him. Then he went to others to shake hands. This was pretty obvious but none of the reporters commented about this. She really resents him and wouldn't want him on the ticket with her. Also whoever runs with Clinton will just be window dressing. Bill Clinton will be vice or co-president.

Let's say our worst fears do come true and Hillary is the nominee. It would be the most monumental mistake in recent presidential campaigning - even worse than Kerry's inept 2004 run - for Hillary not to ask Obama to be her running mate. She gets trounced by Fred Thompson or Giuliani (YIKES!) without Obama's support.

But luckily we don't have to ponder that too much because Obama will be the nominee and Hillary can slink back to NY where they love her earmarks and lobbyist money.

Agreed.

For the record, I will not be voting for any ticket that has Clinton on it and I know I am not alone. Furthermore, I will think a great deal less of Barack should he choose to sell out in that fashion.

I think the idea of a Clinton/Obama ticket is all part of the bogus "Barack is too inexperienced" argument. Obviously, they know he's the biggest threat to her winning the nomination, so they need to convince people that he needs more experience to help get him out of the way, preferably without attacking him too much and alienating too many of his supporters. Trying to paint him as needing more time and then having him serve as VP gets him the experience he supposedly lacks.

I still think Obama would refuse if asked to be the VP for Hillary, but I'm not fully convinced she would even ask him. After all, she would have spent the whole primary campaign telling everyone he's not ready, so how could she turn around and then have him be "a heartbeat away" from the Presidency?

Why, a flip-flop like that could be......okay, wait a minute, hold on. I just remembered something. We are talking about Clinton here, so I guess it is very possible she would ask him.

The fact that there are a lot of Clinton supporters saying both that Barack is too inexperienced, but also that he would be a great VP choice for Hillary helps to illustrate how little thought some people are putting into their choice of candidate.

In any event, if the Democratic party is foolish enough to send Hillary to the general election, I think Barack should seriously consider a run as an independent. He may not choose to do that, but I think he could win.

But enough about the nightmare scenario, I prefer to envision a day when President Obama, as he discusses his landslide victory in the 2008 presidential election, reflects on how not selecting Hillary as his running mate turned out to be yet another example of his excellent judgement.

I just can't see Obama wanting someone like Hillary as a second-in-charge. She's just not the type. And I hate to sound both sexist and racist and geographical, but I'm thinking Obama's best choice would be if he had a white dude from the south on his ticket. Like Edwards. Or Clark.

Senator Dick Durbin has mentioned that former Senator Sam Nunn of Georgia (bluedog democrat) would be a good choice for Barack's running mate. I don't know that much about him but it does sound like a plan to garner some of the southern vote. Any thoughts?

yeah, absolutely agree (great hearing others also say so), Hillary to me is the epitome of cutt-throat politics and I just couldn't vote for hear. I'd also loose respect for Obama if he ran with her, but I don't think he will. There was the NY times article mentioning how they didn't get a long in the senate though:

I'd actually like to see an Obama/Biden ticket. He's someone I think people respect, especially in foriegn policy, and although he's very experienced he'd kind of known as a bit of a rogue. I think it'd get rid of the experience criticism though...

Sen. Obama is TOO HONEST for the Clinton crowd. Stop worrying. She's not going to ask him. She has her peeps out there tipping her hand and letting us (and the black community) know that she has not intention of asking Obama to be her running mate.

Hillary's "backers" seem to feel that she has the black vote so locked-up that she doesn't need Obama on her ticket.

BOY OR BOY OR BOY does she have a suprise awaiting her. First, she'll be shocked when she discovers she doesn't have the black vote locke-up. And second, she'll be shocked when she's not nominated by our party.

Sen. Obama tried to put that to rest on Dave Letterman. He also tried to put it to rest when he appeared before the group of black journalists.

There's no way Sen. Obama will run on a ticket with Sen. Clinton. It won't happen.

I responded to some article making this same claim and I turned it around and said Clinton would be lucky if Obama asked her to be on his ticket. However, that won't happen either. Can you just imagine the ETHICS CLASH alone?

These two Senators have very little in common if you ask me. Sen. Clinton mostly represents the opposite of what Sen. Obama stands for.

I'm not comparing their voting records, I'm comparing the ways in which they do business, their respective visions for the country, etc. Sen. Obama already has highlighted enough difference between him and Sen. Clinton to make it impossible for them to work that closely together.

Sen. Clinton would want and expect Sen. Obama to be somebody he's not and he would refuse to change who he is - THANK GOD! Sen. Clinton would expect Sen. Obama to join her personal war against the Republicans, and be her attack dog. That ain't where Sen. Obama's coming from. That's not his style. That's not who he is. Sen. Obama does not believe in the division Sen. Clinton continues to advocate.

I can't think of a situation in which it would make sense for her to be on his ticket.

Someone like Tom Dashle who shares Obama's temperament, character, integrity, vision and moral authority would be great.

Sen. Clinton is a disaster. She's an absolute disaster for anybody's ticket.

I teach at George Mason University (look us up- www.gmu.edu), and I am proud to say that it is the most internationally, inter-racially diversified university in the country.

I cannot overemphasize the importance of getting these students out to vote, getting them to really LOOK at the candidates. If they haven't already, get them to get on the websites (of course, secretly knowing that ours is the best.)

We are in a time where those who have never cared about politics (I being one of them, I'm ashamed to say, tho I have always voted) are now coming out of the woodwork.

This is the time to recruit these young people to be a part of their own history! I heard today on MSNBC that there is a certain apathy for politics on college campuses(said by the young Republican, and equally contested by a young Democrat that college students are very much concerned) 'With the technology of the internet, we can reach them (through Facebook, etc.) !!!

In the classroom, as professors, we can be on rocky road if we pontificate on how great Obama is, but we CAN, without apology, encourage them to exercise their American right to vote, and to change the course of our (their) country!

I am personally offering an excused absence if the students vote in the primary (sticker, "I voted" as evidence" ) and I'm contemplating a modicum of extra credit points for the same.

We need to make sure that our young voters' voices are heard!

Anyone who reads Obamas book "Dreams from my father" written 13 years ago will know just how authentic and grounded Obama is. He is running on the substance of his character, its upto America to win or loose that leadership quality.

I suggest the best way is to encourage students to read the book and possibly make it the labor day gift for their parents!

Barack wrote 'Dreams for My Father' long before he had any political aspirations. He was asked to write it by a publishing firm, when he graduated from Harvard.
It is a fantastic book, and really shows a real person. I have read books from other political candidates, and its obvious that they wrote it with their political reputation in mind. I think Obama did a bit on this on Audacity of Hope. But for Dreams, its him and all real.

Obama has made some career moves that make it obvious he did NOT have a political career in mind when he made them. Dreams really shows that.

One of the things I really like about Obama is that he hasn't been planning his presidential run for the last 20 years since he left college. He hasn't stayed with his spouse for political clout, etc. He's running for president because he thinks its best for his country, not as a career move.

yes- and please make sure they know how to file an absentee ballot if need be or take a road trip home to vote/caucus in their home state.
Support is one thing- votes are another much more powerful thing.
We will be registering all our high school seniors who are able to vote. In addition, we are planning "first voting" trips- so that kids can go together, keep each other company, and then meet up for pizza with students who voted at other polling places

Another thing that concerns me about a Barack/Clinton ticket is that moderates - whether Democrat, Republican, or independent - who are intrigued by an Obama presidency would be scared off by Clinton on the ticket as well. I wonder if there's been any polling on this question - does anyone know?

Don't worry. Barack and the Obama team all know better than to select Hill for a running mate. DUH.

He will choose whatever man or woman, dem or repub, who will serve his cabinet well, and it'll be a smart political decision, too. That's another thing to love about this campaign.

The Repubs may be a powerful political machine, but as we have seen, they truly SUCK at policy.

I am a total Obama supporter but my wife is 80% for Hillary. She also likes Obama but for some reason she thinks that Hillary, as the nominee, is a destiny sort of thing. I am working on her and beginning to make some progress but I wanted to tell you all that the one thing that makes her dig in her heels is when I bash Hillary. There are many Democrats out there, like my wife, who can be persuaded to vote for Obama but bashing Hillary is not the way to convince them. Hillary has high positives with established Democrats and these folks vote in the primary and many of them are still on the fence because they are just not convinced that Hillary can win in the general election. Many of these folks can be won over but it will take much effort. I am not saying you cannot criticize Hillary but you have to be low keyed. Talk about her vote for the war and her high negatives and if you have to compliment her on a couple of issues but then you go to work for Obama. He is a great candidate to sell. I am presently working on about a dozen folks other than my wife and it is going well. Good luck to you all.

And good luck to you too...the main argument I use is that Barack can work with Republicans much more effectively than Hillary ever could. The relationship is just too poisoned. Let's face it: Republicans will still be around, and if Hillary's President, nothing's going to get done. Like Barack said: it's time to turn the page.

Why don't you try comparing how Obama is actually better than Clinton in her areas of strength? Such as the fact that Obama actually has more experience serving in public office than Clinton (First Lady does NOT count!), how Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored far more bills in the U.S. Senate, or Obama's record in the Illinois State Senate? Talk about the fact that Obama has a far longer and far more extensive track record of working with members of the Republican party. You could also mention the fact that all of what Obama has said has been either proven true, or has come true.

This way, it's not bashing on Hillary, but it is painting the picture that Obama is actually the more qualified candidate. THEN you could get into his honesty, character, and all of those intangibles that we just love about the guy. Good luck, and have faith!

I agree. While I can not imagine ever voting for her I try not to bash her to those who support her. Instead, ask Clinton supports what issues are most important to them and why they think Clinton and not Obama is the best candidate based on their list of issues. Be well versed Obama's actual plans, not just the "change" phiosophy (that is key for supporters but often dismissed by those who are skeptical).
Take advice from the man we all admire so much. Listen more...people who support a candidate believe that have the very best reasons in doing so...

In Los Angeles I see the occasional Obama bumpersticker (about 1 a week) and kunnich sticker, but I've yet to see a Hillary bumper sticker.

Even the day she came to talk at UCLA, I noticed the parking lot full of Obama stickers.

I would like to see more commercials like this video...The use of sound bites and music would be powerful!. I will unwavingly vote for Obama. I do like Hillary and honestly if Obama wasn't running she would get my vote. It's just a matter that she doesn't stack up to Obama and he's clearly what's best for America.

Texas A&M is very conservative. Today I noticed a lot of Ron Paul chalked on the sidewalks. Otherwise not a lot happening. A lot of anti-Hillary and anti-Gore sentiment around here.

Obama is the best candidate I've seen - ever. I think Texas is so anti-Hillary that Obama should win the primary here. One might expect a republican win in the general election. But given who's running on the republican side, I would not at all be surprised to see Texas go democrat if it is Obama or Biden. I will do what I can to help Obama or Biden. I'm not much interested in the other dems.

I've been looking at the Biden site. I admire both Obama and Biden for actually putting detailed ideas on their sites and not just vague platitudes. Biden's site has very little blog activity. Seems to me that Obama supporters have much more enthusiasm. Keep up the good work. It matters to me.

I started emailing a high school student today who wants to do what he can to get Obama elected. (He contacted us first). So he'll be coming to our meeting tomorrow and our table on Friday and will be walking in the 3 parades we have lined up over the next few months. Plus there's a few hundred thousand phone calls to make....

He is now the second high school kid I have met volunteering on this campaign. How's that for hope for our future.

I am the sponser of a club that works with students to get them involved in the election process. Students will be volunteer for the campaign, registering voters, and planning "first-time voter trips". They are so amazing.
The students who do the most work are awarded with a trip to one of the four "early" states to work as election judges or volunteers and the local board of electors.

Democrat Barack Obama has a habit of telling interest groups what they don't want to hear, even at the risk of alienating audiences critical to the prospects of a presidential candidate.

Not to be undone by his rivals, the Illinois senator has made remarks befitting the myriad of forums and debates he's attended, praising the work of unions, upholding Israel to Jewish groups and decrying President Bush's spending on education.

But he's also uttered words not often heard, especially when Democratic constituencies gather. For example:

_Obama told the National Education Association that performance-based merit pay ought to be considered in public schools.

_Cuban exiles are considered one of the keys to winning Florida, but he disagreed with leaders who want a full embargo against Fidel Castro's government and instead called for allowing travel and money to the island.

_Michigan voters play an important role in national politics, but Obama visited Detroit to lecture the state's biggest industry for failing to improve automobile fuel efficiency.

"I don't do this for shock value," Obama said in a recent interview.

"There may be people who chose not to support me because I'm not telling them what they want to hear or reinforcing their preconceptions," he told The Associated Press. "I want to be elected to the presidency not by having pretended I was one thing and then surprise people with an agenda, but to get the agenda elected, to get a mandate for change. And you can't do that if you're not doing some truth telling."

It is gratifying to see the students in the process and backing candidates. It's their future as at 57, I'm becoming a bit of a "has been". Do we leave them a legacy of a mountain of debt, economy decay, continued polarization and a rapidly declining quality of life? That's not what I nor all of you want.

The media, print and broadcast, is full of doom and gloom. Sure the housing market stinks and mortgage funds have dried up, but the constant harping on it just compounds the problem. They also seem to want to annoint candidates with HRC at the top. One poster reminded us on another entry of Howard Dean. As someone who supported him and has met him, I saw the media turn him into what appeared to be a left wing, socialist nut case. While not always agreeing with him, I know him as a very centrist Vermont Governor who constantly wrestled with his own party's left wing to keep the majority of us on his side. Don't let the media elect the next President. If we get HRC, you'll hear me scream louder than Howard did in Iowa in 2004.

Why am I saying all this? Simple! Senator Obama has to continue to run his campaign his way with advice from his team and from us. He has come this far by being honest, open and not pandering to every audience. Let's help the kids get their families on board with Barack Obama. Again, it's their future. We've done a pretty poor job of choosing leaders in this country. Let's redeem ouselves by finally choosing the right one.

I attended a an organizational meeting last night in Phoenix at which about 60 people attended. One of the itmes discussed was getting an endorsement from our governor. They gave us a little cheat sheet to use to write to our governor and ask her to endorse Barack. Here is my letter which I sent off this morning. You can use any of this if it helps.

Dear Governor Napolitano,

I am writing to ask you if you would endorse Senator Barack Obama. His approach to the problems of education, illegal immigration, the war in Iraq and universal healthcare would benefit the State of Arizona greatly.

Senator Obama has consistently said and shown that he is willing to work across party lines to reach solutions. I know that this is also a problem here in Arizona and I thought if it were changing from the national level on down, then, once again, Arizona would benefit from an Obama presidency.

I’ve admired your steadfastness in dealing with Arizona’s problems and feel that your endorsement of Senator Obama would carry a lot of weight with the Arizona voters.

It sounds like Barack may be making a stop in Phoenix at some point now that the Feb. primary decision has been made. Hey, I think you are referring to the uphill battle in the general election for Barack in Az.

We both agree that Barack can and will take AZ in the primary so long as we keep spreading the word on his campaign and all our awesome students at ASU, U of A, and NAU, etc. keep on keepin' on.

Remember, as an ASU alum, I must remind everyone that it was the ASU students that came up with the idea of the Ba(r)ocks that have been handed out across the Valley of the Sun!

That's not to say I don't have high expectations for the Wildcats and Lumberjacks.

I wish Napolitano would endorse Obama, but my hopes are not high - in November, Bill C. came to Tucson for a rally, and Napolitano was ecstatic to be on stage with him. I think that she, like many other Clinton supporters, really want Bill back....
Am also still waiting to hear from Congresswoman Giffords. I like her a lot, and I do hope she'll support Obama. In Tucson, that would mean a lot - and hey, Tucson is liberal and voted vor Kerry big time in the last election!

I don't get people who claim to be Christian who interpret the lines 'Jesus said the poor will always be among you' to mean that its ok for them to personally ignore the poor. How on earth could you read the New Testament, and the teaching of Jesus, and NOT think 'I have to love and take care of my fellow human beings.

The context of the poor remark was when the women was pouring perfume over Jesus feet and someone commented that it was a waste of resources, the money could better be served by the poor. Jesus said that it was ok for her to worship him because he was currently there and wouldn't be for long, while the poor would remain when he was departed.

I interpret that as its ok to take a break from helping the poor to worship God.

Well, I guess it's kind of like "trying to teach an old dog new tricks".

I suspect the reason for the People dropdowns being added was to focus, segment the community blogs postings from here to those subject matters, those interests, etc. there on the dropdowns.

It does though require double postings -- here and there -- on the part of bloggers if want to be seen in both parts.

That may explain for the relative dearth of posted blog comments on the People dropdowns.

Zack Exley of the Huffington Post has written while a few positive articles about Obama & his campaign. In return, if you see an article he has written that you really like, send some positive feed-back to Zack & /or the Huffington Post.

With all the negative stuff we've seen written from other sources that alot of people have responded too, I also believe it would be a nice change of pace to also see comments on the positive.

I have two neighbor children who are college students in Iowa who are Obama supporters. I am contacting them to encourage students who are Iowa residents to attend the January caucuses. Iowa is a must win for us. If you know college students in Iowa, make it a point to contact them and get them busy recruiting other students for January and impressing upon them the importance of this attendence. If we do not win the primaries, there will be no general election to worry about. I am hoping the Obama headquarters has been utilizing this college tool, as there is so much enthusiasm for him at this level.

Like it or not, Iowa sets the tone for everything. So whatever date it is held, it's vital that our grassroots strength and the enthusiasm of our youthful supporters present itself right there on caucus night. I fully believe that a win there changes everything, and they'll flock to our movement.
