I've had a dream to open a listening center where parents will be supported and cultural divides are healed. So far, the time and place have not been right. I haven't been ready.
But, when it comes to new US leadership, the time and place is here, now. And ready or not, Barack Obama asks us each to believe in ourselves. He says we each are able to bring about real change. If opening a blog here and sharing a few thoughts can be supportive of this man I hope is our next president, it's all good.
To some this will sound racist--I want a black man in office. We need a black man in office. *smiles* Yes, he also needs to be qualified--and of sound character. That's a tall order for anyone in the position of president of the US. I am excited about who this person is. We are all human beings, racial groupings are not what they've been contrived to be. But Barack Obama, through who he is, as well as the groups he represents, can bring about incredible positive changes both to the United States of America and to the world we impact so. My hope is we as a country send a clear message to the rest of the world that we are ready to end racism. We are ready for cooperation, peace. Additionally, I believe Obama's policies will create racial justice for African Americans in particular.
Why do I care about that? I remind myself often that this country's wealth was built upon the backs of and from the enforced servitude of African-heritage human beings.
I am not a guilt-ridden white woman. Just someone who wants truth and deep healing across racial and class lines. I want to be part of ending oppression for my children and their children's world. I don't know just how to do that, but Barack Obama does.
Obama stands for Unity. He stands for moral integrity, compassion and fairness. He never supported the war in Iraq ... He has decent gay policies. He understands we need to work with Mexico and support/create economic viability there. Further, I believe he will narrow the ever-widening class divide. He will "keep the dream alive."
Yes, I think listening helps and I think Obama has been listening for a long long time.
Thank you.
