Random Thoughts As I Watch and Listen ...
As I watch, beginning at 11:58 p.m. ...There he is: Our next President with his beautiful familly, surrounded by American flags. This is amazing. Wish his grandmother could have lived to see it, but I know she watches over him. And I'm thankful to Hillary Clinton in this moment for making Obama a stronger candidate. Not only is it the victory that matters here, but the margin of victory which is an overwhelming mandate: Including wins in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, Virginia and Indiana and North Carolina still very much at play. WOW! He embraced every American in his speech and included gay Americans in his list of people. Yes, change has come to America. Yes, this is a defining moment. ... I remember 2004, when John Kerry lost to George Bush. I thought then what has become reality: That the country would have enough and come out to vote for change in 2008. I searched for the right candidate to support and I proudly can say I supported Obama from the start AND to the finish, without any hesitation or doubts. The best part in all this is Sen. Obama won with Sen. Joe Biden as his vice president, and he can clearly say HE won the election and earned the presidency. With all due respect to Hillary Clinton fans, it is so important for his own credibility that he was able to do this. And I am happy to have Joe Biden's foreign policy knowledge, connections and experience to partner Obama's wisdom and knowledge and temperament in the White House.I was uncertain Obama could pull this off, but I always had hope. I believed in him, but I was unsure of the American people and if they were ready to rise above race to this level. And tonight, they have. ... I have not even yet begun to think of the ways this victory will change our future. Time will tell, but I trust Obama's judgment. And for today, just the statement of his victory to the world and to our own country speaks volumes. ... And a president who will listen to those who disagree with him? My God, this is what we need. The irony in all of this is what I thought all along and have written about in the past ... It is only because of George Bush that now will have a President Barack Obama. The country was desperate for change. And now I'm going to finish walking Obama's speech. I am exhausted. The work of the campaign is over. The time for healing comes next. And I look forward to the opportunites and the challenges ahead of us. Tonight, I will rest more comfortably with the belief that our country can AND will rise to the challenges we face. The election of Sen. Barack Obama has proven this to be possible. It is no long Yes We Can. At long last, it is now Yes We Did. Yes We Have. And of course ... Yes We Will.
