Obama Surges Past Hillary in Latest Iowa Poll. The Quad City Times poll was conducted between December 10 and 13.

I watched this morning...there was Clinton and McCain but no Obama!!!

In the meantime I found this video which unmasks the Clintons' real view of Senator Obama. The Clintons' refer to Obama as "uppity"!

Yeah, what the heck?!? Did they bump him for HER? If so, that was completely disrespectful. I know the Des Moines Register is a big paper (in Iowa) and the endorsement is somewhat newsworthy considering how close things are in Iowa. But Obama get the endorsement of THE BOSTON GLOBE, a newspaper with much larger circulation, and it doesn't warrant an interview? Why?

It may be impolite to say this, but with all these scandalous stories surrounding the Clintons, I am afraid Hillary is just paying lip service about confronting corporate lobbyist. These folks are crooks! Peter Paul, off shore investments, fraudulent campaign finances, planted questions, character assassination of opponents, and the list goes on. Somehow these things are relevant to challenging the character of a presidential candidate.

It seems to me that there are two basic mindsets in politics; 1. Work within the system to change the system and 2. Forget the system and establish a new one.

The majority of leaders adopt the former. Why? Because it is status-quo and simply the path of least resistance. The latter takes courage, conviction, and a belief in one's abilities.

Sen. Obama wants us to work with him in establishing a new paradigm. Hillary Clinton is quite comfortable in the old one; take lobby money then return the favor once elected.

So it seems to me that herein lies the fault line between Sen. Obama supporters and HRC supporters.

Encourage the people we talk with that real change IS possible. That the system is broken but this isn't the norm. That hope spring eternal...

Barack Obama goes one better than the paradigm of scrap and build and anew. He knows how to change the system from within, to evolve it without bloodshed, and extra cost. That is why he wants to give the Insurance companies a seat at the table...to try and effect change without their being included is hot air. We are still a free country one hopes and if one wants to run an insurance company they can and we don't need to drive them run out of business, BUT we can make the competition pretty steep. That's what makes service engines perk along.

I've written about this a couple of times, so here are my thoughts:

Dodd has staked his claim on this and has had a big fundraising drive on this issue. He should lead off, and if he does an admirable job and the Republicans don't back off, then I will call on Obama and other candidates and other senators to help out like they have promised.

Barack Obama promised to be there. He broke his promise. And there are ways that Senators can get around Dodd's filibuster, especially if there aren't enough people in the Senate to support the filibuster and keep it going. That's why it matters that Barack Obama be there. It's his job. That's what the Oath of Office he solemnly swore requires. This is about the defense of the Constitution.

Don't get me wrong. I am not a plant from another campaign. I'm not a "concern troll" here to cause trouble. I am a die-hard progressive American who would like to be a Barack Obama supporter. But when Senator Obama can't keep a promise from October to December, a promise about something as important as defending the Constitution and the expanding surveillance grid, why should I believe anything else he promises?

Yes, I am really, sincerely upset about this. Doesn't Senator Obama get it? Even strategically for the Iowa race, he's blundering here. He could have a great Mr. Smith Goes To Washington moment, standing up for what he believes, filibustering to protect liberty. Iowans (and a lot of Americans) love that kind of independent streak. Then he gets to issue a press release in which he says, "I have to apologize to the people of Spencer Iowa for cancelling our meet and greet. But sometimes the personal agenda of a campaign has to take a back seat to doing the right thing for America. I made a commitment to..." You know, with his baritone voice ringing, and staring off into the sunset, and all that jazz.

Instead, he just proved to me that he cares more about his personal advancement in a very small way than he cares about keeping his commitments to the American people and defending the Constitution. I am really, really disappointed in Senator Obama. I thought he was better than this.

Obama does hold the constitution sacred, and he understands how the political process works. And the day is not done. He may get there yet.

We were supposed to go to a Dodd event this afternoon, but it was just canceled yesterday. Candidates cancel their events all the time. Dodd is leading the charge on this one. He needs to be there from the get-go; Obama does not, at least for the filibuster to be effective. He might for your vote, but that's a matter of how you look at this issue and the political process.

I appreciate how passionately you care about this issue. It's an important one. But I strongly disagree with you that he's showing that he cares more about his own advancement that the constitution. That sounds like a really cheap shot. And if you're going to accuse him of breaking his promise, your argument would be more effective if you included the promise he broke, in his own words.

Barack Obama's spokesman, Bill Burton, sent the following commitment to TPM on October 23, 2007:

"Senator Obama has serious concerns about many provisions in this bill, especially the provision on giving retroactive immunity to the telephone companies. He is hopeful that this bill can be improved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. But if the bill comes to the Senate floor in its current form, he would support a filibuster of it."

It HAS come to the Senate floor.

It is in EXACTLY the same form as when the Senate Judiciary Committee voted on it.

The way that a Senator supports a filibuster is by casting a NO vote on a measure to end debate. Christopher Dodd needs 41 NO votes on measures to end debate in order to keep his filibuster going. Without those NO votes, the filibuster can be stopped, and then the vote to pass this downright nasty FISA Amendments Act can proceed.

It's not just the immunity provisions. There are provisions for physical searches here that circumvent warrants. This bill is a gutting of the 4th Amendment to the Constitution. This is the core of what Democrats are supposed to care about.

So yes, Senator Obama made a promise.
No, he isn't in the Senate today to support the filibuster. That's a promise broken.
And yes, his support of the filibuster is desperately needed to keep it going.

Senator Clinton made the promise, too. I don't see why the two of them couldn't have made a phone call, agreed to BOTH stop campaigning for the day, and then both kept their promises. Instead, I'm left wondering why I should vote for, why I should believe, either of them.

It's NOT too late, really really. Senator Dodd can keep up the filibuster for a limited set of hours before a cloture vote to end debate. If Senator Obama can fly back to DC by then, he can still cast his vote in defense of Dodd's filibuster so that the filibuster can continue. But Senator needs to be there, not in Iowa. Call up the Clinton campaign, Senator. Arrange a mutual campaign stoppage. Fly back to DC. Support the filibuster. Clinton will never have my vote. But if Barack Obama will follow through on his promise to support the filibuster, he'll have mine.

Again, James, I appreciate your passion and your commitment, at least to the FISA filibuster cause.

But nothing, nothing you said, or, more importantly, nothing he said, supports your repeated contention that "he broke his promise." He does support the filibuster. He did not say, "I promise to be in DC to support the filibuster from the very start," which is what you are representing his words to mean.

No offense intended, but maybe because I have a 5-year old, you repeatedly saying "he broke his promise, he broke his promise," when he did not in fact promise what you understood him to say seriously undercuts the legitimacy of your argument.

What supports the legitimacy of your argument is the seriousness of the issue. And I don't know how the process is progressing. Do you? I find it very unlikely that the filibuster is in danger, as you seem to think. I have faith in Senator Obama's commitment to the constitution and knowledge of the political process. If the filibuster fails while he was out campaigning, he will have made a serious mistake that many of his supporters will regret deeply. But if it is on solid ground, and he remains campaigning or he gets there a bit later in the day, it will not make one bit of difference in my support of him. It apparently will for you. That's your prerogative and I respect it. We've all got our issues! ;) But I've got so many, one is not a do or die for me, though I do not dispute that this one is a very serious one indeed.

They schedule shifts because they can last so long and Senators have to take turns going home to sleep. Republicans are not going to get the votes they need to override it. Just to repeat. ONE senator is enough to filibuster, NOT for a couple of hours, but as long as they want to. Do you expect Clinton and Obama to sit in their chairs while Dodd argues on? God knows he is an orator and can talk forever and forever if necessary. He may need one or two others to give him bathroom breaks and few hours of rest, but the other candidates do not need to be there.

The cause is worthy and I wish him well. Did it ever occur to you that THIS is HIS campaign strategy? I admire it and he gets points in my book for VP. No one can have a vote to cease debate when someone is properly filibustering, that is why filibusters are so powerful.

So hang in there and enjoy the show and quit grumbling about those who do not have to be there. Nothing can be done to "help" or "hinder" a filibuster. That is why everyone uses them sparingly...only for the most controversial and most important issues. Barack is not doing somethig unusual or disgraceful. He is making the best use of his time.

Jean, I wish that were true. But a filibuster can be cut off if enough Senators say so. For a filibuster to continue, it needs the support of fellow Senators. Barack Obama's spokesman promised that Senator Obama would provide that support.

The Huffington Post reports that Barack Obama won't leave the campaign trail. To be fair, neither will Senators Biden and Clinton, and they had also promised to support the filibuster.

From Biden and Clinton I expect this kind of behavior. From Obama I expected more. Will Obama explain himself?

I don't know enough about Bob Kerrey to make the leap that his comments were intended as something negative.

On the substance of what he said, I actually agree with him. The primary reason I am supporting Barack Obama is for the impact on foreign policy I think he will have.

By opposing the Iraq war loudly and clearly from the beginning, his lineage, his name and all of the other elements of his personality, he will have immense credibility on the world stage.

Anyone else, even if giving a speech written by Barack Obama, would not be able to have the same positive impact that President Obama would.

I agree with you. Often times there is a group think mentality here that interprets things said about Obama as negative. Bob Kerrey doesn't seem to have said anything bad about our man Obama.

I don't believe that it is necessary to put down one side in order to raise up the other.

I agree on supporting him because of his lineage. But somehow, I have trouble believing that even if Sen. Kerrey did not mean anything bad, the Clinton campaign won't push this in light of their recent remarks.

Even as of today, Sen. Obama was rebuffing rumors about his religion in a church service in Iowa, and their campaign seems to have had no problem pushing the Muslim "plant" rumor so far. I agree that he can handle the issue well, but I see this as something the Clintons might try to sell quietly to fuel any negative rumors.

As Obama supporters we should stop getting upset when others mention muslims and Barack Obama in the same sentence. We are the ones feeding the hysteria. So what if someone mentions his middle name. It is his name. Noone has control over what their parents name them. So say it Hussein, don't be scared, say it Hussein (by the way it means good, or handsome one- which he is.) Barack means blessing - which he is a blessing to the USA. When you own something, it can't be used against you. Let us take a que from our soon to be President. He wrote a book detailing his life, so even when people try to use it, it looks silly and ignorant. And, we are also offending a whole group of people that could help bring our dream into reality (Obama as President). We shouldn't judge the actions of a few on the masses. If we did that, then Obama wouldn't be where he is today. Let's please take the high road.

Daniel Patrick McKernan - you got a good name. So does Barack...handsome and blessed one. Can you imagine what it will mean to the people's of the world when his name translates as the handsome President who has God's blessing?

The main thing Barack should have no trouble doing is refraining from using the word "crusade" for things we try to do over there. I CANNOT believe that a man who went to a good school, President Bush, would have indvertantly used that word. It has been quoted so many times and has cost many an American life. We believe he did not mean it as in "Christian Crusade," but try and tell that to an Arab with a centuries long memory!

He is such an idiot. Millions of ordinary people literally lurched in their chairs when we heard him say it. We knew trouble would follow. Why didn't he? It is painful to think what trouble he may get us into before he finishes. I count each day as one more day of our national "sentence" for voting him in.

But, now, a "good looking and blessed" hope is here. We are awaiting our time.

well, i don't think most americans are aware of this change movement that Obama seems to be preaching and zealously proselyting every person he comes across.
I have to admit i might have misjudge white americans, win or lose white americans have shown a side that most blacks never thought could ever seen.
As some one who lived in america and canada sometime before going back to Africa(where i am from) i became increasingly disillusioned with the social fabric of america, thinking that whatever any black man/person did, it will never be good enough but if IOWA is a snapshot of white america( i have no reason to doubt it) then, guys your future can only be bright, you have a wonderful country and fight to have that future. THE AUDACITY TO HOPE!!!! whew that alone is inspirational, stay the course, keep ya eyes on the prize and one day legendary tales will be told about this generation(read you ).

I never tire of that clip. But as one of the many white people screaming for Obama in it (I was in the Ready to Go! choir), allow me to point out that we weren't all white. Yeah, IA is overwhelmingly white, but it's a lot more diverse than people give it credit for. And there were lots of people of color in the crowd, different ethnicities, ages, etc.

It makes me sad when people say that black people think white people would never vote for a black candidate, that, as the person above said, white support for Obama shows a side to white America that lots of blacks in America would never have thought possible. It makes me sad because of what that says of the oppression and prejudice they still have to face. Our country is so desperately in need of healing, and that is one of the countless reasons why Obama is the one we need for the fierce urgency of now.

For this lady, being 60 is NOT what used to be 40. This is the age when women tend to fall apart. Many of us in this age group get thyroid cancer...fall out, literally, from the 50's bomb testing. She appears to have some of the symptoms. Can't say I worry about her though. She has good healthcare. I worry about the country.

Hi everyone! I'm not a supporter of Barack Obama, but I just wanted to voice a part of me that does support him. I'm actually a Mike Huckabee supporter. Why not Barack? I believe what Senator Obama says as far as him being genuine. I think he is intelligent, intillectual, articulate, charismatic and overall a great person. I really like him as a person. If i was a democrat, I'd support Barack Obama. My problem is this. I just disagree with his political ideologies. That's it. I think he's wrong on the issues. But I think America could do a lot worse. I'd take a genuine person that disagrees with me, before a dishonest person that says they agreee with me any day of the week. So here it goes.

GOOD LUCK SENATOR OBAMA! YOU ADD GREAT VALUE TO THE RACE FOR PRESIDENT.

David, great to have you post here! I really respect Huckabee too, him and Ron Paul are my two favorite Republicans up there. I'd have to essentially say the same thing back to you on views, haha! I had a chat with someone in my office, we both agreed that America would be in a far better position with a Huckabee / Obama ticket instead of a Hillary / Guiliani.

Thanks for the comments, David. Didn't somebody say recently that Huckabee was the Republican's Obama. My dad is a retired Southern Baptist missionary and he is probably for Huckabee, but he has been very impressed with Obama and has even read both of his books.

Yes, Carlos, somebody did say that, and it was due to the fact that Huckabee, like Obama, is willing to stand his ground and say what he thinks people need to hear and not what he thinks will "win the election."

Seems both sides are tired of the politicking and are looking forward to a race with two fresh faces on both sides!

One reason that I am for Barack is that I think that we need more mutual respect and cooperation between the parties and CIVIL disagreements. I'm a staunch Obama supporter at this point. Even though I was thinking about Huckabee based on an interview I saw many months ago, I can say that I like Huckabee a lot less than I used to. This is for two main reasons.

(1) I did not know about this when I first heard of Huckabee, but the Wayne Dumond case calls Huckabee's judgment into serious question in my view.

(2) I'm also offended by comments he made implying that Jesus would be in favor of capital punishment since He did not argue against being put to death during the crucifixion.

That's either a stunning lack of understanding of the meaning of Christ's death (from a minister!!!!) or else a calculated statement designed to curry favor with the wing of his party that is strongly pro death penalty. Either way, it is a red flag to me.

Huckabee does have some good qualities, but I am troubled by what I have recently learned about him.

Luckily for me, I won't need to worry since Obama will win. :-)

What the religious right must understand is we cannot govern to implement one religious view. That has allows been dangerous from the inception of our Constitution.

They must understand that separation of church and state is not about being anti-religion. It is about anti-TYRANNY.

For sure, a lot of our best laws are based on some aspects of Judeo Christian principles, but the brilliance of the Constitution is based on secular humanism. It is also important to know some of our worst laws are or have been based on Judeo Christian principles. The Constitution is ammendable to progressive enlightenment for each generation, religion much, much less so. Our Constitution respects religion but it is not guided by it. Everyone is absolutely free to believe what they believe and each one of us will defend strongly each others guaranteed right to do so even if our religious views differ. That is quite genius and quite beautiful for the practicalities of goverance.

The Constitution is about living together with full respect and order.

Here is the preamble to our Constitution:

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

This is exactly why Senator Barack Obama candidacy is so phenomenal. He is leading us with bright eyed clarity, back to what is best about us. He embodies what is a true American. With him as our 44th President of the United States of America, we will hit our lofty stride again to lead the world in enlightenment.

Very very important points that you make. I laugh when the members of the religious right tell me that the founders of the nation were Christians and that is why we have to vote Republican.

1. Christian = Republican? Give me a break!

2. They were secular humanists, a bit like Unitarians today. Believing in divine providence is different than claiming a personal savior.

I quote you: "We cannot govern to implement one religious view." Even if we could, each variation of a faith has disagreements within itself. for example, if Judeo/Christian, whose version of the Ten commandments would we use? The old testament of the Bible lists at least two...and even protestant groups do not feature the same one.

As a woman, here's the thing about Huckabee that I find hugely troubling...

He has been doing really well in Iowa. According to the polls Obama, Hillary, and Edwards are practically tied. In that piece though, I'd like to outline the biggest two, in my opinion.

6. Caucus rules that work to the advantage of those with strong support in rural and blue collar areas.

7. Dedicated supporters who will likely turn out even if the weather is cold and inclement.

6 and 7 work hand in hand there. Delegates are split among all districts, even those with fewer people. So votes in rural areas count just as much as those in densely populated areas. This is where Edwards is strongest. A vote of 100 people in a popluation of 600 has the same amount of say against a vote of 1000 in a population of 6000.

Edwards has been campaigning in Iowa for 5 years!! Five years! He's never stopped. He's got insiders galore in the state government. Members of his campaign staff are married to state government officials, that's how deeply he's inserted himself in Iowa politics. Some people who worked for his "charity" are now state officials in Iowa. He's had Iowa Dem county chairs and PCOs in his pocket for years, waiting for the primary. He's living there between presidential runs. Yes, they actually bought a house and lived in Iowa. So if he doesn't do well in Iowa he's even more inept than I thought. But even if he does well there, it will end there.

Sort of...delegates are assigned based on how many registered Democrats live in any given precinct, approximately. So it's a per capita Democrat count, not a per capita count. For example, in my community of 2000, I have 10 delegates just because there are so many registered Democrats. Some have a lot smaller number, some in cities have lots higher numbers. The precincts are set by agreement of the two parties, so the 'number of Democrats' won't be the same in any given precinct.

Edwards has always been doing ok, but I think that with the DMR endorsement going to Clinton, that may have been Edwards' supporters (the hard cores' at least) last chance, and they may now start migrating to Obama. I know there will be still be a strong showing for him. Either way, he can't afford to run past NH, and NO WAY can he afford to run a general election on public financing, and he and Trippi both know this!!! I don't understand his staying in the race, unless it's for Elizabeth.

mary, this is something I think about too. Even if he wins in Iowa, how can he stay in the race ?? I also believe that he is doing it for Elizabeth. I think she is a heroine. I feel sad for him most of the time, thinking about what he is going through on a personal level and all the wear and tear of a campaign.

I don't think she is a heroine, though I do respect her desire to keep living a normal life as long as possible. If she had said to John, "You know, we don't need a 28,000 square foot house. There are a lot of people out there like me who are also struggling with cancer, but can't afford to pay for treatment. Let's take the money we could spend on a mansion, and donate it to these people instead. Let's live in a regular house, like the regular people we want to represent.", then I would consider her a heroine.

Because the MSM knows HRC is sinking and sinking fast. i was just listening to a radio program here in NYC, and let me tell you, All that negitive stuff HRC and CO. were trying to spew about Obama is not going over very well with the African American communitty here in NYC. You see don't know how many of you realize that In NYC we have a big Black American communitty that is Muslim. Did Bill Clinton actually think that this would fly,I don't think anyone in her camp remembered that Mr. Clinton has his office in Harlem U.S.A and there are plenty of Mulims in the very communitty he is supposed to be working from. So now expect to see a lot of backlash because of the E-mails that were sent out and the Charlie Rose interview,etc,etc...

Backlash has already started in Atlanta, Georgia. It started with John Conyers, then with Andrew Young. It's on AA radio everyday. The overwhelming majority that call in to the radio are intelligent AA that support Obama for many reasons. But there is a small minority that call in and use the same ol' lame excuse. You all know what they are. AA are challenging the notion that Bill was the first black president and his RECORD. They are also challenging HRC experience and her RECORD. It's great. I see the tide turning, but we definitely need a win in IOWA!

I could never vote for Hillary or Edwards. Edwards need to be honest with his supporters and tell them he doesn't have the money to compete in the general election. He also needs to tell them about his corporate ties. Edwards is a fraud.
