It's stunning and monstrous that lynchings went on in America until 1968. America has an extremely shameful past toward African Americans. I have no words to describe how awesome it will be to have an African American as President of the United States.

Between 1882 and 1968, there were a documented 4,743 lynchings in the United States, and most victims were black men. Victims were usually beaten and hanged, often in public squares. White families would watch and take photos. No one was ever convicted of murder in connection with any of the deaths.

The NAACP hoped that the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932 would bring an end to lynching. Two African American campaigners against lynching, Mary McLeod Bethune and Walter Francis White, had been involved in helping Roosevelt to obtain victory. His wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, had also been a long-time opponent of lynching.
Robert F. Wagner and Edward Costigan agreed to draft an anti-lynching bill. The legislation proposed federal trials for any law enforcement officers who failed to exercise their responsibilities during a lynching incident.

In 1935 attempts were made to persuade Roosevelt to support the Costigan-Wagner Bill. However, Roosevelt refused to speak out in favour of the bill. He argued that the white voters in the South would never forgive him if he supported the bill and he would therefore lose the next election.

President Roosevelt would not sign an anti-lynching bill into law for fear he'd lose the white voters in the South? TERRIBLE! I didn't know that, did you? What an example of placing politics above principal. I have no understanding of this kind of hatred. God help us all.

The Great Migration was the movement of approximately seven million Black People out of the Southern United States to the North, Midwest and West from 1910 to 1970. Precise estimates of the number of migrants depend on the time frame. African Americans migrated to escape racism, seek employment opportunities in industrial cities, and to get better education for their children, all of which were widely perceived as leading to a better life. Some historians differentiate between the Great Migration (1910-1940), numbering about 1.6 million migrants, and the Second Great Migration, from 1940-1970. In the Second Migration 5 million or more people relocated and migrants moved to more new destinations. Many moved from Texas and Louisiana to California where there were jobs in the defense industry. From 1965-1970, 14 states of the South, especially Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, contributed to a large net migration of blacks to the other three Census-designated regions of the United States

Yesterday while leaving my local grocery store, two tall handsome young black men walked in. I just looked at them and wondered how anyone could torture and lynch anyone due to the color of their skin. I will never understand this. It must have been a culture so ingrained that no one even questioned it. In order to torture and kill they must have been seen as less then human.

Here in my own lifetime, we have the opportunity to elect an African American to the highest office in the United States.

There is absolutely no contest between John McCain and Barack Obama. It MUST be so obvious to anyone that McCain is incompetent, especially after last week. I wish even a few brave republican politicians would break rank and endorse Obama. I guess they are looking after their own jobs, like President Rosevelt did.

The only reason I can think of that the so called polls are close MUST BE RACIAL PREJUDICE.
