Guys, the other superdelegates are from the state of Maryland. This number does not include the superdelagates from Illinois that should be announced later this evening. Kayln Free from Illinois already announced her endorsement today, others should be out shortly from Illinois. That would be the 4 from Ill., and 2 from Maryland thus far today.

Thanks. Now, knowing, that I can say that we appear to be in an excellent position.

I heard someone say last night that in order to win NC, Clinton had to garner 70% of the white vote and that just ain't gonna happen.

I'm feeling better today but would feel like dancing a jig if the IN polls were going our way. Meanwhile I will stop looking at the media and its agenda-driven polls.

I don't trust the MSM either and I am boycotting them from now on. I do no understand the logic where Hillary begins to trail by 5 and considered the winner in Indiana. When our guy was trailing by 5 in PA, they automatically declared Hillary the winner. Why is it so difficult for the MSM to give Obama the same projection? It is so annoying to me, but I will begin making calls this evening. Fired up and ready to go!

Good points here! I say we need to ask: where does the money come from and where is it going or being spent?

I think that maybe some 527 political groups and P.A.C.'s who collectively and asymetrically are in favor of both Clintoon and mcCain are reaching out to the boards of directors and shareholders of U.$. media companies and are influencing their purchasing powers, content selection and some of the polling companies that the media mogul$ connect to.

After May 6, WV, KY and Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota.

By my math, that's 6 contests.

At least 3 of which she is unlikely to win.

How do we win the Low Information Voters in Kentucky and West Virginia?

Two Maryland Superdelegates Endorse Obama; Delegate Countdown - 273 To Go

The chairman and vice-chairman of the Maryland Democratic Party are throwing their support behind Sen. Barack Obama on the eve of Tuesday's primaries in Indiana and North Carolina, giving the Illinois senator at least two additional superdelegates.

The endorsement brings the total number of superdelegates to endorse Barack Obama to 260. Senator Obama is 273 delegates away from securing the Democratic nomination.

Ben, according to Obama's website, the difference in sd count is 15.
I also, checked the dem convention watch website, their numbers are different but the same pattern. Look at the diagram "clint.'s superdelegate" in the left side. Turn it upside down, and that will be us. yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

I just read a very disturbing article about how 1.1 million voter registrations in Indiana have been canceled. That's 26% of the statewide registered voters!! I hope someone looks into this because it could affect the Indiana elections big-time. The two counties with the heaviest purgings are Lake and Porter. Lake County is 95% African-American and Porter has a lot of college-educated people - two of Obama's strong bases. Raise your hand if you're surprised by this. Anyone? >:-/

Three years ago, during an appearance on CBS, Sen. Hillary Clinton stated that she agreed with the overarching premise of John McCain's Iraq policy: that America's commitment to the war shouldn't be based on time frames but rather on the level of troop casualties. She even cited, as McCain now regularly does, that the United States would be well suited to follow a model for troop presence based on South Korea, Japan, or Germany.

Nora whats-her-butt just asked Tom Dashel about HRC new Nuclear plan to force Michigan and Florida through by;aws committee and Dashel said that since the story broke, TONS of super d's committed and uncommitted have called him and said that her idea was crazy and would cause MAJOR issues with them.

Nora said "So you mean the supers would be ticked" and Tom said "Being ticked would be to put it mild".

HRC is pissing off the super d's again.

Also earlier Ickies was on and that Contessa Brewer was asking him about it, and he got flustered and looked like a complete fool.

We need to give the 50 state strategy time to reach all 50 states. I like that Obama's been in almost every state so far for at least one event. I was happy that he went to Montana and South Dakota for party events there.

Tuesday is the last big "cache" of delegates from primary voting. If the lead is insurmountable at that time, supers who do believe in the 50 state strategy will be in a better position to cast a vote without appearing to want to influence it. And frankly, I no more want the supers to appear to overturn anything on Obama's behalf than I want them to appear to overturn anything on Clinton's.

I've said from the beginning that the candidate with the most pledged delegates at the end of the nominating contest should win the nomination. That's not a statement of support for a particular candidate, it's a statement of support for following the rules.

I think that is fair, as long as she wants to play by the rules and stop acting like a republican.

Three unrelated comments:

1) Speaking of statements, I'd kind of like to see one on Myanmar. The estimate has now risen to 13000 dead. What's more, their rice crop may be devastated in a time of global food crisis. Very sad news.

2) I'd actually like to see Obama broaden his gas-tax push-back and make it a referendum on who can best manage the economic issues in general. I don't want to vote for someone who's making economic proposals that are so misguided that 200 economists are motivated to get together and sign a statement denouncing them.

3) Obama inching up in Gallup daily tracking: 50-45 in his favor today :)

you know Obama really should start doing to folks who ask about Wright (Russert was it, should be it-no more!), he should just look at them for a good 5-10 seconds. They will get perplexed. It works like a charm. Then he should say, I have said all I am going to say about that. Sen. Obama is doing an excellent job appealing to all voters--including working class voters. Polls and media headlines sometimes have their own corporate agendas.

Here is how Sen. Obama appeals to the working class:

Opposed the war in Iraq from the start. Money spent on Iraq could be better spent on the home turf in multitudes of ways to provide more jobs in the U.S.

Supports green jobs.

Is sensitive to lower income working class and their economic challenges--color of skin unimportant.

Takes the long term view for real solutions to consumer and working class problems--ie: Social Security, Health Care, Consumer Issues.

Is honest, courageous, hard-working, and ethical himself.

A family man.

Indiana is no more racist than anyone else - there are racists everywhere, but they are now the minority. I don't think most of the people that feel that way will vote for any Democrat in the fall anyway.

I think Obama has and will change minds and show people that being black is no different than having blue eyes, green eyes, whatever. The good news is that most younger people don't feel that way and things are changing. I've also noticed that a lot of bigots like to sit and complain and blame others for their problems, but often don't bother to go to the polls. Let's hope that they stay home in November.

Ft. Wayne demographics favor Clinton, imo. It's very blue-collar, old, white... annoying. In fact, I can only count about five Starbucks off the top of my head.

You're right, though, I expect Barack to do very well long most of northern Indiana, Merrillville, Hammond, S.Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart. Goshen on the other hand is very Hispanic, not sure how that will play out. And Indy & the college towns: Bloomington, Muncie, and Terre Haute should be friendly towards Barack.

Sadly, I think Leon is pretty accurate with this comment. In the cities it's a different story, but in rural Indiana there are a lot of "backwards" folk, and I'm being nice about that.

Trying to Stay Positive, but I am worried about NC! | Report to Admin

From everything I have been reading on the blogs and newspaper sited over the past few days , folks in NC are little disappointed with Barack because he has only held 12 events in NC , in comparison to the 71 from the Clinton campaign.

They are starting to feel as if he is taking their vote for granted. I must admit that I am totally shocked that he is not doing more in NC. One or two events from him personally this last night probably would have boosted his overall point average.

What do you all think? I am so nervous I can barely eat or sleep!

If anyone has any positive info out of NC, please share!

I have heard positive support from NC, but CALLING today would help reinforce!

I think Barack is in NC today before returning to Indiana for a rally in Indianapolis - remember last week many from urban Indianapolis feeling they really needed a major presence there....

I think they have covered the territory very well given the challenge...

This is funny. I was responding to Renee who is worried about NC by telling her about my positive phone calls to NC today. When I returned to the blog, I saw that you had responded to her just minutes before I did, but since we are both known as "Cathy" it looks like it's the same person responding twice. I noticed we did that the other day, too. I looked you up and see that you are from MN, so I've changed my name to Cathy from CA to avoid further confusion. We must be on the same wavelength, though...great minds:) Should we have a Cathy's for Obama group??:)

I just finished making 50 calls to Indiana and NC. Lots of message machines and 2 Hillary supporters in Indiana. But in NC I got no Hillary supporters, one McCain supporter, lots of machines and 3 very excited Obama supporters. One lady named Ginger told me that her whole household had already voted Obama, her sons away at college had voted Obama and that we should have faith in NC...it is in her words Obama country. Just talking to her really brightened my day, as I dread making phone calls but I have to do it if I want to be the change I have been waiting for. If you are thinking of making calls, please do so. People are mainly really polite even if they aren't for Obama. And one call like Ginger's can make your day/week/month!

12! he has done more than 12. I am sure that not all the events are featured. but he was in NC when he was still campaigning in PA!! the vibe i am getting from NC is positive. the trouble is that women's group that Louis-Dreyfus was supporting--that is working to suppress AA voter turnout and Hillary's negative campaigning. A win is a win. and he will win NC. he may squeak by in IN. but given that he has been attacked by the MSM consistently since pulling off those 11 straight victories, McCain has been taking swipes at him along with the Clinton machine, he is doing darn good. Just read an article that said, he is in much better shape than Bill Clinton was in 1992!

I am getting very discouraged by the media and their constant coverage of Rev. Wright. It is really starting to cause a racial divide. It has nothing to do with Obama at this point, but it has everything to do with an establishment (black church) that the African American community has relied on for hundreds of years.

I was thinking that we could organize a letter writing campaign against MSNBC and CNN regarding their coverage and demand that they stop fanning the flames of racism. Especially MSNBC, they actually had a special report of Rev. Wright over the weekend and it seems very bias that the media has NEVER done a special report on other questionable Minister's in the public eye.

Barack is trying so hard to unite people, not divide them, especially with something as personal and spiritual as the church/religion.

I think email is easy to select a chunk and delete. How about a snail mail, old-fashioned letter in an envelope that stacks up in offices and someone has to carry somewhere? If we all did it at an organized time, it could make a statement.

It is my belief at this point. The more letters written in protest over the dwelling coverage regarding R.W. the more it calls attention to it on our part. Lets not even mention it here anymore. If a media person is still talking about this situation it is because they are incapable of forming an original thought on their own. I also believe that the 2 opposing candidates are keeping this story alive.
We need not foget that HC has hired a well known pollster that is driving any negative polls and driving this discussion. Each time we react to it they get exactly what they want.
I know how you feel which is why I no longer watch any of these networks.
I really think we are going to win both of the states tomorrow.
I also think that pro-Obama media outlets should quit talking about it. Now what they are doing is talking about someone else talking about it. It's silly if you think about it.
We are still winning.

I decided to email the MSM. I was especially offended by the "specials" that Dan Abrams on MSNBC had two days in a row on the Rev. Wright issue. So, I wrote the following email to Mr. Abrams:

Rev. Wright and his views will have no impact on American domestic or foreign policy. There are no “deals” or even the appearance or deals in the Rev. Wright saga. It is time to put the Rev. Wright issue to rest. THE END.

If you are truly concerned or interested in who influenced Barack Obama's character, read the following investigative article from the New York Times, "A Free-Spirited Wanderer Who Set Obama's Path".

After all of the air time you spent examining Rev. Wright's statements, the impact on Obama's judgment, character and candidacy, how about spending an equal amount of air time examining the impact of his mother on his judgment and character? Since Mother's Day is coming up I think that this is an appropriate way of showing who most influenced Barack Obama's judgment and character, his mother.

If there is one thing this campaign has done, it has toughened all of us up a bit. Many of us (including yours truly) are new to the rough and tumble of politics. At the beginning of this campaign I was easily incensed by the media, Bill, and character assassinations on Barack. I think I have finally come to a place where I don't let it distract me. I have found that making calls and canvassing really are the best tools to fight discouragement. I also saw that MSNBC was running the Rev. W. stuff. It simply motivated me to make calls to encourage people to get out and vote for Barack. I believe that it is truly up to us to make sure people understand what the future holds with a President Obama. Throughout this campaign, he has proven at every turn at every tough break, that he is thoughtful, insightful, and willing to always tell us the truth. This is the future of politics. I don't know if the country is ready for it, but it is going to happen.

Let's keep our heads up! And keep making calls! This is the best way to fight the MSM spin. Let's tell our fellow Americans why we think Barack is the best choice. They will listen to a real person that is just like them, vs. Joe Scarborough, Dan Abrams, etc.

I feel pretty good right now. Imagine, the Clintons just knew this would be a cake walk. This is why they are fighting tooth and nail, why they are talking about using the "nuclear option". Hillary has had her clock cleaned by this newcomer and they are still trying to figure out what happened.

I have to echo Michelle: For the first time in my life I am truly proud to be an American. Because we are actually on the cusp of addressing big challenges in this country that have existed my entire life (I was born in '71). This is a very special time.

Well...other than my fantasy of just being able to BE THERE...!!!

Just for fun.... :-)

We're in the Democratic National Convention in Denver, just a few miles from my home. After days of casting ballots, arm twisting, threats from HRC, speeches until midnight, the voting is all tied up and it all comes down to one vote who will determine the party's nominee. I haven't voted yet. Hillary and Bill are standing there, yelling at me to vote for HRC, but I refuse.

The entire hall is hushed (other than HRC and WJC), waiting with baited breath, will he, or won't he, cave under the heat, the lights, the constant screaming from HRC and Bill.

But I stand fast.

I hear someone near me whisper, "He's like a rock, unmovable, the stress must be terrible... He's never been in the national spotlight before, he's a total nobody to national politcs."

But I stand fast.

The Secretary calls out..."Can we have your final vote, please?" The voice booms, unbearably loud in the hall. I can almost hear the sweat trickling down the backs of those near me.

I smile, chuckle at HRC and Bill, and I pick up the microphone: "Madam Secretary, I am extremely PROUD to cast my unwavering, never changing, rock-solid vote for the best candidate to run for President in MY LIFETIME: BARACK OBAMA!!"

HRC screams, the secret service struggle to hold her off of me. Bill gives me the finger as the secret service hold his arms back, his nose a brilliant red. I wonder if that blood vessel in his forehead will pop. The entire hall goes crazy.

And Barack Obama becomes the next President of the United States.

(Here's hoping that no one with a psychology degree analyzes this too closely!!)

An Open Statement Opposing Proposals for a Gas Tax Holiday

In recent weeks, there have been proposals in Congress and by some presidential candidates to suspend the gas tax for the summer. As economists who study issues of energy policy, taxation, public finance, and budgeting, we write to indicate our opposition to this policy.

Put simply, suspending the federal tax on gasoline this summer is a bad idea and we oppose it.

There are several reasons for this opposition:

First, research shows that waiving the gas tax would generate major profits for oil companies rather than significantly lowering prices for consumers.

Second, it would encourage people to keep buying costly imported oil and do nothing to encourage conservation.

Third, a tax holiday would provide very little relief to families feeling squeezed.

Fourth, the gas tax suspension would threaten to increase the already record deficit in the coming year and reduce the amount of money going into the highway trust fund that maintains our infrastructure.

Signers of this letter are Democrats, Republicans and Independents. This is not a partisan issue. It is a matter of good public policy.

Has anyone read or heard about the HRC campaign to get the rest of the super delegates from the DNC? I think that more than half of them are Clinton supporters. It seems the deck was stacked all along to get her the nomination. Just read an article in TIME that suggests this is the plan being executed by Harold Ickes. HRC's campaign manager has been suggesting this in the past two weeks since they know that mathematically it is impossible for her to get the nomination based on the pledged delegates. And----don't forget about FLA and Michigan. The strategy appears to be electability and toughness-but mostly electability. HRC has lots of surrogates in the media who have been weaving this narrative into their pieces on the internet (ex-Susan Estreich and Maureen Dowd of the NY Times). This does not bode well for BO. THe The HRC camp is determined to win at all costs. They are betting that people will forget and will not want McCain and the Republicans in the fall on any level. So, when she wins, we will have to give her our support. That is the way old-style politics is done. HRC doesn't give a hoot whether her supporters love or admire her. She wants to win and be the first woman to win the white house, and her husband wants her to win so that he can vindicate his tarnished legacy. More than ever, this is why BO MUST win NC and come close in IND. This will freeze the superdelegates and will continue to cause others to trickle toward BO. If he happens to win in both states-a mighty flood of the political, superdelegates will want to get on a winning ship!!!!!

I'm with you. I won't stay home, but I will go and write in Sen. Obama's name, and then I'll forever remain an Independent.

I posted last week about Clinton's impending surprise which is supposed to happen between June 3 and/or the 15th, according to the pundits on MSNBC. They're thinking something is up by the conversation that some of them had with McAuliffe(sp). McAuliffe said that all of this will be over between this time period, with a huge grin on his face. I wonder if this could be the surprise, or just a lot of spin?

He HAS been to Iraq.

Delegates were given out fairly. Entirely fairly. Pledged delegates alone he has been strongly in the lead the entire race. You might be referring to MI and FL, which broke the rules, and the Obama campaign did not put in any resources to running with no name on the ballot for MI. You can't count broken elections.

Clinton signed a statement saying that she agreed to NOT have MI and FL votes seated. If the situation were reversed there would be NO WAY she would go back on her own agreement. But she wants to break her own contractual agreement.

Caucuses ARE democratic and have been part of the process for a very long time. Bill Clinton benefitted from those caucuses when her ran. In fact, Bill Clinton was part of the architect of the Texas two-step system, which BTW, when it was said and done, this time, OBAMA won more delegates overall.

If we don't like the system as you seem to imply, we should change it for the next election cycle, but for right, it's all we've got. It is imperfect, certainly, but we'll have to wait to change it until the next go around.

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Barack Obama, who has fiercely criticized the Bush administration's Iraq policy from afar, departed late Wednesday for his first tour of Iraq on the opening segment of a weeklong trip to the Middle East.

The Illinois Democrat, who is joining a congressional delegation led by Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), said he intended to ask U.S. military commanders for a "realistic framework" for reducing the number of American troops in Iraq.

"There have been hints by the administration about drawdowns of troop levels, but there hasn't been anything very definite," Obama said in an interview before he left Washington. "I don't know whether I'll get that or not, but that's what I'll be asking."

With the Senate on a winter break until Jan. 18, members of Congress are fanning out across the world on fact-finding missions that align with their particular interests. Obama chose the Middle East for his second foreign trip.

Obama, Bayh, Sen. Christopher Bond (R-Mo.) and Rep. Harold Ford (D-Tenn.) are scheduled to meet with U.S. troops this weekend in Baghdad before traveling to other parts of the country.

The trip comes less than a month after Iraq's parliamentary elections, which, said Obama, offer a crucial opportunity to assess "how optimistic people are about the capacity of the three major ethnic groups to forge some consensus."

The congressional trips, arranged by the military, also are designed to provide a morale boost to U.S. forces. More than a dozen troops, for example, have been selected to play basketball with Obama at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait.

After a two-day Iraq tour, Obama is to travel to Jordan and Israel on his own.

Three leaders of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago will accompany Obama on a portion of the trip, taking him to view a project launched with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago in the northern Israeli town of Fassouta. Federation officials said they urged Obama during his campaign to travel to Israel.

"It's so important for our elected officials to learn about this and to experience on a human level what life in a place like this is all about," said Michael Kotzin, executive VP of the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.

Obama said he would talk to leaders from both sides of the Middle East conflict.

Barack has shown support for the troops and will continue making them a number one priority. Policies Barack has spoken about and will implement:
strengthening military benefits,
implementing a zero tolerance of homeless vets,
demand that the military and the VA coordinate to provide a seamless transition from active duty to civilian life,
improve mental health care.

This election we have all found out alot more than we would like to about the Superdelegates.
I disagree, Caucus states are valid but then again it all depends on who is winning the states that held a caucus.

CNN has completely changed its tune in the past couple of weeks. I think at some point in the future, CNN's "reporting" of this primary campaign will be a matter of study at all journalism schools across the country.

I wonder if Clinton has promised the news editors at CNN a job or two in her "White House" to cause such a drastic change in their coverage of the primary campaign.

Obama's campaign should do all that is necessary to "invite" CNN to report fairly and accurately.

The only person I can watch on TV is Keith Olbermann who is on MSNBC at 8pm Eastern. He tells it like it is. When he has Rachel Maddow on, its even better because she is also brilliant. She is on AirAmericaRadio from 6-9 (?) pm.

Then I turn the TV off.

My dad, who worked with Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite in the 60's must be rolling in his grave over what happened to TV journalism. I'm sorry dad! I do know he would be an avid Barack supporter, as would my mom - if she were alive. We are a very liberal - and intelligent family!

An Open Statement Opposing Proposals for a Gas Tax Holiday

In recent weeks, there have been proposals in Congress and by some presidential candidates to suspend the gas tax for the summer. As economists who study issues of energy policy, taxation, public finance, and budgeting, we write to indicate our opposition to this policy.

Put simply, suspending the federal tax on gasoline this summer is a bad idea and we oppose it.

There are several reasons for this opposition:

First, research shows that waiving the gas tax would generate major profits for oil companies rather than significantly lowering prices for consumers.

Second, it would encourage people to keep buying costly imported oil and do nothing to encourage conservation.

Third, a tax holiday would provide very little relief to families feeling squeezed.

Fourth, the gas tax suspension would threaten to increase the already record deficit in the coming year and reduce the amount of money going into the highway trust fund that maintains our infrastructure.

Signers of this letter are Democrats, Republicans and Independents. This is not a partisan issue. It is a matter of good public policy.

Lanham, MD - The Maryland Democratic State Central Committee this morning put the final stamp of approval on the list of 99 delegates and 12 alternates who will attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado on August 25th. All of Maryland’s delegates to the Democratic National Convention have now been named. Today, 24 pledged “add-on” delegates were allocated to each presidential candidate in proportion to the statewide primary vote. Sen. Hillary Clinton received 9 “add-ons” and Sen. Barack Obama received 15. The Maryland Democratic State Central Committee voted overwhelmingly for the delegates approved by each presidential candidate’s campaign.

In addition to the 24 pledged delegates, two “unpledged add-on” delegates were also named. Although not pledged to any candidate, Gov. Parris Glendening (Obama) and Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend (Clinton) had publically disclosed their preferences far in advance of the meeting.

“In August, these 99 delegates and 12 alternates will go to Denver and make history,” said Michael Cryor, Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. “Today’s meeting of Maryland Democrats delivered one powerful message to America. Regardless of which candidate they support, every member of this delegation is committed to unity and victory in November. I have made phone calls all weekend and today, also. I mostly get answering machines, but there have been some rude people who when I say "I am a republican supporting Senator Barack Obama". I just get a dial tone in my face. I will say there have been some who ask me to repeat myself, because the thought of a republican supporting Barack Obama sounds foreign to the ears. I, also, do it for shock factor hoping most people will engage me as to why I am supporting him. I'm still phone calling, but I'll be so glad when tomorrow comes and goes. People in Oregon have been much nicer than Indiana.

I just got off the phone with my first Obama supporter. He has not done early voting, but will vote tomorrow. I told him the lines may be long so just be patient. I thanked him for his support. I needed that!
