Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson Endorses Barack Obama for President

Cleveland, OH -- Today, Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson announced his endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for President at a community gathering in Cleveland with Michelle Obama.

"As the Mayor of Cleveland I know first hand the struggles that working families face, and how desperately we need a new direction in Washington," said Mayor Jackson. "Sen. Obama provides the real change Americans so urgently need, and has spent his life fighting for working families. He is committed to revitalizing the urban core of America, fighting poverty, bringing good-paying jobs back to Ohio, and lowering health care costs. Senator Obama is committed to improving the lives of the least of us. He provides hope to those who need it most. He will fix what is wrong in America today. That's why I am endorsing Senator Obama to be the next President. He will bring change we can believe in."

Mayor Jackson took office in 2006 and has aggressively confronted poverty and crime across the city, while also refocusing efforts on education, health care, rebuilding Cleveland's neighborhoods and fostering economic development in downtown Cleveland.

“Mayor Jackson set a model for urban leaders across the country with his plan to restore our nation's cities," said Senator Obama. “It’s time we turn the page on the division that has kept us from focusing on the issues that really matter, like ensuring our inner city schools receive the resources required to educate our children, that every American has access to quality, affordable health care, and that we make the economy work for working families. I look forward to working with Mayor Jackson to mobilize Americans to take on the challenges our cities face that have too often been neglected."

Also announcing their endorsements this week were Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann’s wife Alyssa Lenhoff-Dann, Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray, and legislators throughout the state. Senator Obama has also been endorsed by Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman and Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams.
