Obama Statement on Equal Pay Day

Chicago, IL -- Senator Obama today released the following statement on Equal Pay Day.
"Equal Pay Day is about the fundamental American principle that if you work hard and do a good job, you should be rewarded for your success, regardless of what you look like, where you come from, or what gender you are. And yet, many women today are still earning less than men for the same work – making it harder for single mothers to climb out of poverty, and for elderly women to retire with security.
"This pay gap is an ugly reflection of the discrimination that still exists in the workplace. And as the son of a single mother and the father of two young daughters, I believe we have a responsibility to close it. That’s why I’ve fought to ensure equal pay for equivalent work in Illinois and in the U.S. Senate, and proposed increasing the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s funding and staffing, and making sure it is led by appointees with a strong commitment to ending discrimination. And that’s why tomorrow, I will vote for the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to overturn an unfair Supreme Court decision and ensure that workers can seek a remedy for any paycheck that reflects pay discrimination, no matter when they received it.
"In the end, while closing the pay gap is essential, it is not sufficient to make sure that women and girls have an equal shot at the American dream. We need to update the social contract to reflect the realities that working women face each day by providing seven paid sick days each year, helping all fifty states adopt paid leave for their workers, doubling federal funding for quality after-school programs, and encouraging flexible work schedules to help parents balance work and family.
"On this Equal Pay Day, let’s remember that closing the pay gap is about more than just passing a law or implementing a policy. It’s about living up to our founding promise of equality for all."

The polls are open and the stage is now set for an historic Pennsylvania primary. Staff and volunteers worked hard on GOTV all Monday long, getting those "door hangars" to the homes of every voter we know to be a Hope and Change supporter - including any Undecideds leaning in our direction.
We also focused on making calls to volunteers using leads generated online, scheduling them for election day's main activities (more door hangars early in the morning, then outdoors visibility near the polling places, voter protection, troubleshooting, results monitoring and data entry...) That is GOTV of the highest class, baby!…
Montgomery, Bucks and Delaware Counties, which used to be predominantly Republican, may prove to be big winners for us this time. FINGERS CROSSED! We have some of the best manned regional offices I have seen in this election cycle, right here in Delaware County, some 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia. The young field organizers here are AWESOME, and with them, we don’t need to waste any so-called “street money.”
It is because of the excellent ground work we have done here in the suburban counties surrounding Philadelphia that I believe we may get a much better result than Billary's camp is expecting. And remember: Pennsylvania is Hillary's native state (she was born here in Scranton, and her late father was even buried in this keystone state).
You have to be in Pennsylvania to witness the enthusiasm!!!
OK! Here’s the FUN PART OF THE STORY….

Not so. For Barack also said it would be close, much closer than the huge Hillary margin of a few weeks ago. This page will be dedicated to an ongoing account, drawn from all media sources. Bookmark it for an up to date status report. If there is a knockout blow either way it will be delivered by the good people of Pennsylvania.

Does Anybody Have Mark Halperin`s Email Address?
The reason I`m asking is that there is an error in the transcript he posted on his his site. The interview is also on audio and you can clearly hear Obama say:
"If we strengthen Abbas,
if we are clear in improving the day to day lives of Palestinians then I think that wil do more than anything to encourage Hamas to renounce violence rather than simply sitting down with them."
But in the transcript it says: "If we strengthen Hamas..." which is of course wrong!
Could anyone give me Mark Halperin`s email address so that I could mail him and ask him to correct the error in the transcript?
Here`s the link to the transcript:

Equal Pay Day. Either I'm out of touch or this kind of discrimination is never made much of an issue of in the press.
There is absolutely no reason for any discrimination of any kind when it comes to equal pay. Good example, look at Stephen Hawking the world famous scientist. Just because he's severely handicapped should he be paid less than anyone else in his field?

Dan,
This type of discrimination is sadly still alive & well.
As a 61yr old female who has been working for 45 years (& also am a single parent)..yes it's still a fact.
Over the years politicians have "talked" about the issue but as usual, nothings been done...but Obama "gets it" & WILL address the problem.
You Know You're an Elitist if... |

Dr. Brad Paul Burke
Apr 22nd 2008 at 12:12 pm EDT
You Know You’re an Elitist if…
With all the recent talk about elitism, I decided to put together a list of criteria which makes someone an elitist according to current talk…
So, according to the current politics, you are an elitist if…
1. You turn off Monday Night Raw to read a book. Especially if that book is non-fiction, or not a cheap romance novel.
2. You actually look good in a suit.
3. You recognize and respect someone else’s opinions without challenging them to a fistfight. Even on the Senate floor.
4. You aren’t afraid to drink red wine, which is heart-healthy and aids in digestion, when dining with your friends. Or if you don’t think that Bud Light is a premium beer.
5. You actually talk to your friends about subjects beyond sports, what happened on Survivor, how your job sucks, or how ‘those people’ have screwed up your life.
6. You are willing to challenge limiting beliefs rather than pretend they don’t exist.
7. You decide to stay home on Sunday to read the Bible, or God forbid compare passages found in the Bible with other religious or philosophic texts.
8. You can love and admire people even if you disagree with some things they say or do. (See: #7, the part about what Jesus actually said)
9. You don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. You show up as the same person in Arkansas, Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania.
10. You went to college. Especially if you studied and succeeded in academics more than in public drunkenness.
11. You believe that Osama Bin Laden, and not Mohammed, was responsible for 9/11.
12. You have ever been in the same city as anyone else who could be called an elitist.
Remember, according to the current definitions, most of our Founding Fathers were ‘elitist’. And, of course, the entire development of ancient Greece (including democracy) and modern Europe was the result of ‘elitist’ thinking and effort.
It is a sad state of affairs in America when people are criticized for being smart and rewarded for acting stupid.

Thanks to the generosity of many who donated their valuable frequent flyer miles, we sent 29 out-of-state volunteers to Texas and Ohio, and another 32 to Pennsylvania.
This means ***1,525,000 MILES*** have been donated to date – putting ***61 VOLUNTEERS*** on the ground, helping bring it home for Barack.
DONORS: It takes 25,000 miles for a ticket. So – who’s got at least 25,000 on the same airline which they’d like to donate toward making sure Barack Obama is our next President?
Step right up — I’m getting requests almost daily from volunteers who want to help but can’t afford the airfare. Donate now, please, so we can get these people where they’re most needed. *** WE NEED MORE MILES! ***
VOLUNTEERS: If you want to spend a week or more in IN or NC, but can’t afford to pay your own way, contact me and I’ll try to match you with an airline ticket.
Please call me at 714-536-6104 California time. (Don’t reply on the blogs; I probably won’t see your response.)

Apr 22nd 2008 at 1:19 pm EDT
THANK you President Elect Obama, BHO Family, and the HQ Team!
For giving me a my lost dreams back and inspiring "HOPE" that they can and will happen again...
Here is a bit about me: Disabled First American living on SSD. Not by choice but by a series of extreme auto accidents, nearly killed by 2 different drunk drivers while at stop lights in SoCal. Also while at lunch one day I was involved in a hit and run car pedestrian event in 2003 (unsolved-I am one of 13% that survive annually), that incident left me with multiple head and physical injuries as well as on going PTSD.
Also while hospitalized as a john doe (un-know person) for 6 months while in a coma, my insurance ceased due to non payment, lost a great job, ended up losing my $750,000.00 condo, a new SUV and the quality of life, after living in the amazing hills of Silver Lake-Los Feliz area in Los Angeles for 22 yrs.
I could say I am bitter, but I am not, I struggle daily to make my lill bit of money stretch, useless things no longer are important, I am alive and that is all that matters.
My daily Mantra is: Go Elitist 13% survivor! lol
I live with my Foster/Aunt step mom and we share a great house although modest, here in South Dakota, not always easy as it is a small cow town and things are very expensive here, but we make it work as best we can.
This is my simple goal, I would like to have at least 2 or more friends from all States and Countries from here on our on our B.H.O. Blog family...age, gender, racial heritage, sexual orientation, religion, income level, makes no difference. As i see all people equally...in every situation. I ask this in friendship, not in pity...as i have no need for that emotion in my life.
Thanx my B.H.O. Family for reading this, know that I am secure with the new me and am at a place of great personal re-growth, peace and excitement in my life...

Three to five generations ago, the popular belief was to always work harder. One or two generations ago, the belief was, "work smarter, not harder." Today's generation believes in doing work that you are passionate about. That is why the people who have the most fun in our society make the most money. With all the challenges Obama has faced along his trail, he still appears to be having so much fun interacting with the American people wherever he goes. Barack is passionately following his highest excitement. He is following his bliss, is seeking joy and is having lots of fun along the way without allowing anyone to divert him from his dreams. He is clearly leading and teaching through his example and is an inspiration to us all.

Dear Mike
The video song "I've Been Everywhere" was first sung in Australia in 1962. It covered Australian country towns.
Recorded by Lucky Starr (real name Leslie Morrison) written by Geoff Mack.
It was very big at the time - also recorded years later by both Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash / different towns of course.
As an Aussie it was wonderful to be reminded of my younger days by the excellent video!

Apr 22nd 2008 at 1:59 pm EDT
This statement on equal pay is critical to me. I got married almost a year ago, but before that I was a single mother.
Without any sort of support system I had take make awful choices; sub-standard child care; 2 hours to travel to it, rather than 40 minutes by car. Food stamps cover food, but not diapers; W.I.C. offers many gallons of milk, but not fresh fruit & veg. The whole system is such that it never really offers enough to get you out of it's own grip. These were dark days indeed. It is the worstfeeling I can think of to have a child and not have enough resources, it feels utterly like failure.
So, I am not a single mother any more, but it still means so much to me that Obama touched on such issues. Issues of pay disparity, or reforming the welfare system so it actually helps. The one thing I did have at that time was the wonderful health-care program in Oregon that covers children & pregnant mom's.
You know there is great prejudice that comes along with needing help or the welfare system. I actually had a cabbie spout at me the opinion of some radio personality (Imus, I think), that single MOTHERS are bad for this country-we are ruining everything by having these children on or own (on our own?! Time for a little sex-ed for him!). I told him I was NOT so thrilled myself! How impertinent. It was not as if I was a baby factory. I had been engaged to my son's father. I thought he was to be my husband. I got sick; he got scared & called it off.
I was not a teenager. I was a grown woman. I had work until 2 weeks before I found out about the baby. So what was I to do? (Most) People don't plan to be single parents.
I really wanted to share my story with everyone who has been in a similar situation; hold on, Obama's coming! If I were still in that place, I would weep with the light on the horizon.
But, mostly, I want to share it with those who have not been in this dark place. It is not what they suppose. It is work to get welfare and it is a full time job with no hope for advancement.
Obama is relief.

I'd also like to see some thought go in to compensating people who volunteer sometimes more than they are paid) get income tax credits or deductions. The grassroots is getting very tired and people have to find a way to make a living wage or they will stop getting involved as volunteers. This will be more important with an Obama government that wants and needs the grassroots to make the changes.

got it! it's all in a bad link (close tag is appended in the link text)
the server side assumes that this is a valid close tag, but it's actually a malformed url
now let's see if we can fix this baby
