ANALYSIS
By John Mercurio
Updated: 9:35 a.m. ET July 12, 2007
...
Barack Obama is not Howard Dean.
...
earlier this week, Edwards tried to defend his own campaign's financial lethargy by downplaying the importance of fundraising as an indicator of a candidate's long-term viability. "Everyone will remember Governor Dean who outraised everyone else by more than 2-to-1 and wasn't able to win the nomination," Edwards told the Associated Press.
Edwards is hardly the first person to compare Obama to Dean, both of whom soared onto the national stage fueled by strong and early opposition to the Iraq war. But as the Hotline's Conn Carroll notes, there are fundamental differences between the two Democrats when it comes to fundraising.
Carroll cites numbers from MyDD's Jerome Armstrong indicating that Obama's fundraising is less dependent on the Internet and more dependent on public speaking appearances than Dean's was. "If the typical Dean Internet donor was a guy in his 40s with an advanced degree, [then] it appears the typical Obama donor is a Tufts senior selling Obama tickets outside his dorm," Carroll writes.
"It is unclear why Obama has not inspired the same voices that fought for Dean," Carroll continues, but he offers one explanation, via bloggers David Roberts and Armando Llorens: that Obama "has let others in the field, like Edwards, outflank him on the left" on issues such as the war, which "would have never happened to Dean."

Obama Faces the Test Dean Failed: Broadening Support
By Anne E. Kornblut and Perry Bacon Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writers
Tuesday, July 17, 2007; Page A01
He raises tens of millions of dollars over a few months. His supporters are passionate, almost fanatical. And his grass-roots movement threatens a more established rival.
A description of Howard Dean in 2003 or Sen. Barack Obama today?
Obama campaign advisers -- many of them campaign veterans who watched Dean's slow rise and rapid descent at close range -- reject the comparison, arguing that their candidate and organization won't repeat the mistakes of the former Vermont governor.
But as Obama has shattered fundraising records over the past few months while continuing to trail Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) by double digits in polls, the challenge for the senator from Illinois has become clear: He must turn the intense devotion of his backers into a force that can win primaries, expanding his base of support beyond the narrow band of Democratic elites who backed Dean.
"It looks like a movement candidacy, and it's generating an enormous amount of enthusiasm, excitement and money," said Steve McMahon, a Democratic strategist who was a top adviser to Dean. "The question now -- as in all movements like this -- is whether or not the voters and the votes will follow."
...
Like Dean and Bradley, Obama is strongest among elites, whom other Democrats derisively call "latte liberals" -- a group that voices strong opinions but is not big enough to win him the nomination. Polls show that Obama is ahead of Clinton among voters with college degrees, while Clinton has a huge lead among voters who make less than $35,000 and those who have graduated only from high school.
Like his unsuccessful predecessors, Obama is more popular among men and independents, rather than with the women and working-class voters who generally drive the nominating process.
...
To help address that trend, Obama's campaign is doing some retooling: He is focusing more on the economy, which was the subject of a town hall meeting in Iowa last week as well as recent events in South Carolina.
Obama has made other subtle changes as well. He recently pulled one of his closest aides, longtime spokesman Robert Gibbs, out onto the campaign trail to help sharpen his message. Aides are working to get the occasionally long-winded senator to speak in shorter, crisper sentences, particularly in debates and town hall meetings.
After spending months organizing major rallies, the campaign is beginning to shift toward smaller venues, giving Obama a chance to interact personally with every voter at times, a tactic Clinton has adopted in Iowa. In particular, Obama will make more stops in diners and small venues in New Hampshire, where a small-town feel is prized.
Advisers have also discussed Obama's going to Europe to help define his foreign policy record.
Yet the campaign rejects questions about whether it needs to do something different to win.

This is exactly why we need Obama as our president. This is what he needs to raise often during his campaign. Building bridges, make Washington more transparent, that's the only way the country can start repairing itself & the government can actually get something done.

It's such a coincidence that you posted this article. I am finishing Al Gore's book "The Assault on Reason" and will quote...:
"The power of online organizing has also begun to create hope for many that America's current system of financing political campaigns - now dminated by special interests - might eventually be replaced by the millions of small donations collected online outweighing the smaller number of larger contributions from big donors."
He talks about the healthy discourse taking place on the internet by concerned citizens.- reconnecting people to the conversation of democracy. The more people become involved in this discourse, rather than sitting and watching TV with its one-way message, the less cynicism people will feel.
I honestly believe that one of Barack Obama's great legacies will be this - he has made a vitally important change in "politics as usual". The will of the American people will once again become a strong and powerful influence in the health and future of our democracy. It's a paradigm shift away from PAC's, Washington lobbyists and monied special interests. He is leading us back to government "of the people, by the people and for the people".
If Senator Obama accomplishes nothing more than a change in "politics as usual" - I, for one, thank him with all my heart - for myself, for my children and for my grandchildren. We need a healthy democracy for our country to survive.

I for one am going to do more than merely vote (though that in and of itself is something far too many do not do) for Mr. Obama. And I must agree with most of what you said. However, your last paragraph, which in a sense concedes defeat by mentioning if Mr. Obama "accomplishes nothing more than a change in 'politics as usual,'" is the type of attitude a country in need of serious change does not need to have. He is in this to win, and not just to pose an example of change.
It is sincerely my intention to do what I can to make a difference for the Obama campaign, to include reminding people of the corruption-laden Clinton family (oh how soon we forget past deeds). I will not evince defeat, especially this far out from the elections. Neither should you, even if only through a poor choice of wording.
We won't be able to completely change the broken state of our country by electing Mr. Obama...but, indeed, we must start somewhere, and with Mr. Obama as president we will usher in an intelligent and mindful administration, which will continue well beyond Mr. Obama's tenure.

Oprah to host Obama fundraiser
Invitations have been sent out for what promises to be a must-attend event for much of California's Democratic elite, particularly those in the entertainment industry: a Sept. 8 fundraiser for Barack Obama at Oprah Winfrey's home in the Santa Barbara area.
In the best tradition of Hollywood, the e-mail touting the afternoon gathering doesn't mince words, promoting it as no less than "the most exciting Barack Obama event of the year anywhere ..."
Getting in the door costs $2,300 --- the maximum individual contribution for the primary season. But, as is usually the case at such high-profile shindigs, there are incentives to gain a little extra face-time with the candidate.

I can't no longer denial the fact that the Obama run for president is a movement. I've also noticed that Hillary's campaign has already received the most money that's allowed under the law from most of Hollywood elites. However, Hillary still have not out raised Obama. keep in mind that Hillary borrowed 10 million from her senator's war chest.
In conjunction with Oprah influences throughout the country and the faithful little people like us the 3rd. quarter campaign donations is going to be an eye popping surprise to the pundits.
Bill Clinton is Hillary's secret weapon but, Oprah is ours. Hillary is desperate, she have sacrificed her morals for the presidency by allowing herself to be seen with a man that is suffering from moral decay. little as she know it or not but this is speaking volume about her.

Dissent is invaluable in a democracy and if the Obama '08 website and campaign is about inclusiveness, is about change, is about freedom of expression, then having bloggers like Wayne around, IMO, is evidence of that.
In other words don't be like the other campaigns' websites who don't appear to tolerate dissent.

Hillary will never allow Wayne, you or me to publish a thread on her website that is contrary to her mission.
John have conspired with Hillary already publicly to hijack our government, that's right I said publicly.
Bush have stripped away some of our rights that was given to us, via the founding fathers of the great nation.
So don't come on here and try to speak about freedom of speech when you probably have not spoke out publicly the above mention.

I have not posted in sometime because I have been watching to see any real change in the Obama campaign strategy.
1) Oh it is great that he has raised the largest amount of money, but MONEY does NOT translate into votes or a true grassroots organization. Therefore, all the comparisons of Obama to Dean are quite valid.
2) Buyers of Obama "stuff" does NOT translate to votes or a true grass roots organization. It is great for raising money and for publicity, but votes equate to delegates and delegates equate to getting the nomination.
3) While Obama is bringing in MONEY which is great, he has become STATIC in the POLLS. The polls may also be a great indicator of what is about to happen. Hillary's campaign knows how to modify and make changes to the strategy when they see what is NOT working. Her campaign knows how to bring out the voters in the primaries and to get her the delegates needed to be the Dem nominee.
4) If Obama's support is to the Independents, the better educated and more economically advantaged, then he has NO chance against Hillary, because she has a broader base of appeal which includes the lesser educated, less economically advantaged and more importantly to women and to the most LOYAL VOTING Block of the Democratic Party and that is the African American Voter. Obama's campaign strategy is to have him ignore this block. Hillary and Bill are happy with that strategy.
5)Barack, must also be able to answer why he is preceived not to be BLACK enough and how that is impacting is ability to pull the African American support from Hillary to him.
6) MOST important in debates, Obama MUST Learn to ANSWER questions NET and to the POINT. Whether he likes it or not, people VOTE on emotion and not on intellect. He must learn to give "sound bites". Roland Martin tried to address this with him in an interview after the last debate and Obama, became defensive and tried to state that he is NOT about sound bites, but what he forgets is, the media and the VOTING public are.
7) Obama, must learn to modify and adapt and get a strategy to start to build his support, but not at the expense of NOT knowing who he is and being proud of that. Hillary has no problem is being a female and Richardson has no problem is being Hispanic and the others have no problem in being white males. Then why does Obama only want to be African American around African Americans. Obama MUST learn to speak truth to power and that truth will get him through in IOWA, NH, Nevada and SC.

You don't give near enough credit to the American people and their ability to see through the rehearsed sound-bites that pour out of the mouths of most politicians. That Senator Obama is running such a strong campaign after being a virtual unknown a few months ago, is nothing short of spectacular! The amount of money that Obama has raised is not the issue. The numbers of small donors that can donate time and again, the passion of the people that back his candidacy, the feeling that average Americans have a voice (rather than PAC's, special interests and Washington lobbyists), the foresight and knowledge that led him to speak out against the war when it was not popular to do so - those are the real issues. Poll numbers have never been so skewed. A large part of Obama's support comes from young people that will be voting for the first time (not represented in the polls) and who do not own traditional land lines. This is a movement of hope that will (if nothing else) prove that "politics as usual" is a thing of the past. It will change the course of our democracy and every American owes Barack Obama a big and hearty "thank you!" for that!!!

FIRST
If the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to reduce the Tax Gap, Why does each time we file the tax returns the IRS never process them losing the Fed annually a minimum of $11 Billion of workable, possible and potential taxes?
SECOND
If the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to reduce the America’s Tax Gap, Why does the IRS has been ignoring ALL our filings since the year 2000, hiding and blocking the disclosing of our assets of $4.4 Trillion in the federal tax accounting system (based on our hereditary rights and ownership over 2,116,938 acres in the U.S. Territory of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico since the date of February 4th, 1750), our accounting, our tens of certified and ancient documents, our Gross Income of $525.6 Billion, losing the Fed approximately $175.2 Billion of workable, possible and potential taxes, ignoring the establishment of a federal receivership, rejecting helping us to regain the control of our assets?
THIRD
If the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to reduce the Money Laundering, and knows that in Puerto Rico constitute a felony the corporate real estate holdings in excess of 500 acres and the corporate dedicated activities of buying and selling real estate, why do the federal authorities continue allowing that the local government and the financial banking system continue laundering and trading at Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae close to $100 Billion of false and fraudulent mortgage back securities product of the violation of the statutes enacted on 48 USC § 752; the Article Number 14 of Section VI of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; the Title Number 28 of the Puerto Rico’s Annotated Laws secs. 401 to 407, 421 and 431 to 435; the sections numbers 3391 and 3432 of the Title Number 31 of Puerto Rico Annotated Laws (Puerto Rico Civil Code - 31 PRAL secs. 3391 and 3432) [related to the falsehood of the contracts]; and the Title 18 USC §§ 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005, 1006, 1007, 1010, 1011, 1012, 1033, 1034, 2314 and 2315 (related to the Fraud); §§ 1956 and 1957 (related to the Money Laundering); and §§ 1952, 1961 to 1964 and 1968 (related to the Racketeering)?
FOURTH
If during the past ten years we have been defending our American nation against those particular white collar criminal practices, and the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to reward all of those citizens that may help to improve the federal revenues, WHY does continue ignoring all our requests and communications violating his own code of ethic?
FIFTH
If the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to reduce the America’s Tax Gap and the Offshore Tax Evasion, why does allow that tens of publicly traded companies with operations in Puerto Rico continue hiding and moving billions of dollars offshore, allowing them too the filing of false and fraudulent financial statements based on the unauthorized using of our multibillionaire movable (liquid) and unmovable assets?
SIXTH
If the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to reduce the Money Laundering, and, the income per capita in Puerto Rico is just between $9,000 to $15,000 dollar, why does allow that the real estate developers in the island (dedicated to said illegal corporate real estate businesses) continue laundering billions of dollars by virtue of selling in a short period of time hundreds of housing units with prices above the half million dollar, using our assets too?
SEVENTH
If the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to reduce the Money Laundering, why does the Federal Legislative Branch never assign enough resources to the Cost Guard to stop the multibillionaire drug trafficking market in the island (on our lands), with negative effects on the America’s east coast, limiting the surveillance using just a few boats?
EIGHTH
If the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to increase his revenues, endorsing the charitable donations programs as a tool for the taxation compliance, WHY does the IRS continue ignoring ALL our tax refunds requests, impeding us to donate billions to the non profit organizations in America?
NINETH
If the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to increase his revenues, WHY does never implements economic mechanisms in Puerto Rico to recover his expenditures of $10 Billion each fiscal year in federal aids programs subsidized by the American tax payers, like for example, establishing multiple renewable energy concepts, like hundred of wind and solar power units, a high scale sugar cane ethanol industrial production and two nuclear plants to cut the annual $1.8 billion dollar oil dependency, combined with tourist facilities with tens of casinos?
TENTH
If the goal of the U.S. Treasury is to increase his revenues and knows that we are the owners of the 90% of the lands in Puerto Rico, WHY does the federal government continue consulting his social, political and economic policies with the local corrupted political parties, structures and authorities promoters of said criminal practices?
