WASHINGTON, DC –
United States Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND) endorsed Barack Obama for President today, citing his ability to unite the nation to get things done.
“I believe that Barack Obama’s ability to end our partisan divisions will unite Democrats, Independents, and Republicans in a coalition for change that can win in November,” said Conrad. “Barack Obama is our best hope to break the partisan logjam in Washington, and make real progress on issues like health care, energy, and ending this war in Iraq.”
Added Conrad: “I saw Barack Obama bring Democrats and Republicans together to pass the furthest-reaching ethics reform since Watergate so that the voices of working Americans could be heard in Washington. He’s also reached across the aisle to pass a law that would increase government accountability by creating a database that allows taxpayers to see how we’re spending their money. And we have worked together on bipartisan legislation to invest in putting America on the path to energy independence, so we can turn away from the Mid East and turn instead to the Mid West for our energy needs.”
“We know Barack Obama is the candidate who will bring change we can believe in because he has done it throughout his two decades in public service,” concluded Conrad.
“Senator Conrad fights every day in Congress to preserve our middle class, lift up our rural communities that too often lack resources and influence, and restore fiscal discipline so that our children don’t bear the enormous debt burden that exists today,” said Senator Obama. “He is respected on both sides of the aisle for his relentless focus on results, not partisan politics. I’m grateful for Senator Conrad’s support and I know he’ll be a partner in our effort to unite America around a common purpose.”
Conrad, who serves as the Chairman of the Budget Committee, has represented North Dakotans in the Senate for 20 years. Conrad is a leader on rural issues – he helped write the 2002 and 2007 Farm Bills, expanded access to health care in rural areas, and has fought for investments in renewable energy programs that would benefit American farmers. Conrad has also been a leader in the fight against unfair trade practices which are costing American jobs.
The Obama campaign has opened an office in Fargo, ND and is building a grassroots network throughout the state that will turn out the caucus vote on February 5th. On Sunday, Senator Conrad will join Obama on the campaign trail in Iowa.

I notice that those who endorse Barack Obama cite his ability to unite both sides of the aisle and actually get things done as one of their reasons. I really believe this reflects the general sentiment of the American people as a whole and why I believe he will win the election in 2008.

Freedom, I think you're right.
People are finally tired of the vicious partisanship and attack mentality that Edwards is advocating, and they're tired of the right-left wars that Hillary has been a part of for decades.
We want our politicians to get together, put their hunger for power aside, and get things done for the people who elected them.

A veteran senator endorsement. Great news! I see Sen. Obama winning many states on Feb. 5th and splitting votes from NY.
Then on his Feb. 10th "My plans for 2008" update he will simply talk about winning in VA and MD on Feb. 12th!

It's an even bigger endorsement than a newspaper, North Dakotan's are fiscally responsible as a state and I watch Conrad all the time when he's figuring out how we got reamed by the Administration and how to fiscally get out of it. He brings up the cost of oil as our import, lowering domestic spending on other important issues of the people. He points out that, the cost of buying the oil everyday, could educate over 400 thousand students for full tuition in a college of their choice. I like and respect Conrad, he works with numbers in black and white, and shows the damage done by the rubberstamping of the last six years.
His blessing shows that Barack will be surrounded by and supported by people who will move mountains for change in America.
Fiscal, open financial stability is just what the doctor ordered.
Go Conrad and Obama!!!

feel extremely vindicated after ready this LATIME article which you could read here:Link.
The story talks about Obama adopting a more forceful and combative populous message just like the one Edwards is using.....
I've been suggesting for months now that Obama's "hope and change" message was seen as too weak by many rural Iowans and that those voters wanted more beef behind Obama's word...They wanted Obama to be more forceful and be more combative....They just hated the fact that his message was so reconcilliation-like instead of "fighting type" , and i strongly believe this had hurt Obama.
The reason Edwards has gained in many polls is because his combative message is more in line with many Iowans...Those voters feels like corporate America is stealing from them and they want a fighter that will go to Washington and fight them.
Better now then never , but i worry whether Obama's switch is coming way too late because his reconciliation message is so heavy that people may never want to see him as much of a fighter then Edwards.
This switch is necessary because Obama's "hope and change" message is not powerful enough to win the race and he needs to integrate a more fighting tone to get him pass the finish-line.
I'm a bit shocked it took them so long to see Obama's message wasnt enough.
Obama has got to move as far to the populous side to get maximum impact because he only has 6 days.
He does not have to throw away the hope and change message or banner...What he needs to do is intergrate a more fighting tone to it and more corporate/Lobbyist bashing.

IMHO. I don't think that it should be as much about vindication as it is should be about faith in HQ that they know what they are doing.
See timing is everything. If Barack had started the speech that he gave this week a month ago it would be old news now and would not have had the impact that it is having in the closing days leading up to the caucus.
I'm glad that you are feeling better about the tone of the campaign but the definition of
faith is believing in something that you cannot see, hear or feel.

Blaze, give it up.
Edwards is not rising in the polls. He dropped dramatically when Obama started campaigning in Iowa in March, and has stayed down. Edwards has been in Iowa for almost 5 years, campaigning non-stop. If he didn't get more support than this by now, he never will. He is without organization in any Feb. 5 state. He's out of it. The only beneficiary to his game in Iowa is Hillary, and he knows that. He's a charlatan.
Obama's message is the same as always - a strong position on change that will lead to more success for progressive causes. His progressive cred is better than anyone else's in this race. He gets things done. People know that. His crowds are triple Edwards' crowds.
You're wrong.

I have a question re endorsements, crowd size and poll data. Let me begin by saying that I realize there are lots of different polls out there using various means of polling voters. Some Edwards supporters claim that based on certain polls he is the most electable candidate. I also realize that some people coming to hear Obama speak come for a variety of reasons and will not necessarily caucus for him. I know that some voters who are polled have never attended a rally and press the mute button when political ads are aired. It has also been pointed out that some of Obama's supporters are not polled. I still feel that given the number of endorsements and the size of his crowds these polls shouldn't be so close. Any thoughts?

Polls in Iowa are notoriously unreliable at predicting the results. We just have to wait and see-they have their own unique process.
Size of crowds tends to be a better indicator than the polls.

You're right to some degree-about the polls not being a true representation of the voters. Take myself. I've never been polled. I'm an independent who (although I'm not in an early state),and for the first time in my life I will declare and caucus for Obama. Nobody's counting me. Plus someone else made the point that many of these polls aren't contacting many folks that don't have landline phones. Don't know if that's true or not--but it could make a big dif! Not to mention us "pesky" independent(who don't like HRC, by the way)and a few republicans are probably going to sneek in too. GO OBAMA!!

It's true. There's actual data on it. I posted a blog on it several months ago, but I can't find it now. But it's true. Younger people tend to have cell phones and pollsters do not poll people with cell phones. Also, those who don't own a home do not get included in a lot of these polls. I worked in polling for four years. When someone indicates that they do not own a home , the call is not "completed" which means it's not counted. There are several demographics underrepresented in polling and many of them are registered voters who will show up at the polls. Based on their demographics alone , many of them are more likely to be Obama supporters.

Yeah, I've been out of communication lately due to the Christmas season and a family of seven wonderful children, who now, thanks to the debt of the country, know the true meaning of Christ's Mass. All we had up was a homemade Nativity Manger, with Mary Joseph Jesus and the three wisemen.
We promised to try and give them something on income tax time, provided the 70% increase in heating doesn't take that too.30% increase in electricity and that's 100% no financial Christmas, in the Jones household. God, America needs change for the People, Of the People and by the People now. Please, this is the third Christmas, and if it keeps going like it is, we will be paying daily for our water and air. The oil companies are ruining our streams and rivers around the world. Please Lord, Can we have an Honest, trustworthy, intelligient, Charismatic, diplomatic, President for 2008? In this we Pray.

I wanted to give $20 today, so my wife gave $5 twice and I gave $5 twice.
All four were matched. That's 8 donations. Had I given $20, it would have been 2 donations.
This is a grass roots movement and there are plenty of people who can only donate $5. Let's match all of their donations!

I'm maxed, but my husband has been matching donations. He does a couple of $25 matches each day. The reason is that many of our first time donors have small amounts to donate, so he can match more donors that way. But he also sometimes offers a $100 match.

PS I've got some other wonderful news...
CNN just did an Iowa report with Candy Crowley. She was discussing the caucus procedure... the 15% rule (if only 15% show up for a candidate, that candidate is removed and the caucuser has to go for a second choice.)
Now listen to THIS... and I'm QUOTING:
"If, for example, Hillary Clinton (clip of HRC) doesn't get 15%, people will have to make a second choice."
To me, that means, "Despite all the bs CNN pays us to feed you, Hillary is toast. Make a second choice." Oh, she also made a big deal about people showing up. She said that HRC attracts middle aged women. Obama attracts the youth.
While I'm at it... guess CNN took a long, hard look at Blitzer getting blitzed by Barack on Larry King. The writing is on the wall. HRC won't win. They will no longer have to kiss her ring. And Candy Crowley rocks!
Anybody? Am I off base? Tell the truth.

Yeah.. I was really shocked by CNN's lapdog attitude to the Clintons. I guess I have memories of CNN from Desert Storm when they did some very good reporting. And now they've devolved into a broadcast group that is clearly being intimidated by the Clinton machine. Its similar to FOX and their pandering to Rove and his henchmen.
I really don't like to see this. It makes me squirm too when Chris Matthews so openly endorses Obama and Pat Buchanan so openly endorses Clinton.
I personally prefer that broadcast journalism be the voice of the people and not the voice of the politicians. Let us "little guys" decide.

Seriously, if you are such a strong supporter as you say you are, get your ass up and do some volunteering...
Do some canvassing, make some phonecalls, donate some money, write some letters to the precinct captains..
Do something else besides trying to damage people's spirits on this blog, and quit tryin to "boil the hope out of us"

I've been as cheerful as anybody on this blog , but i've also been the most realistic around here while everyone else looks at everything through a rosy sun-glasses.
When i think something is not going so good , i'll say it and give my imput on how we can fix it...Ive always done that..I'm a problem solver...I look for whats wrong so we could fix it as soon as possible.
Barack is not Jesus...He's a flaw man just like you and i...He makes mistake , he's made mistake and he will continue to make mistake...In life , it's all about getting better and fixing your mistake.
I cheer whe there's things to cheer about and when there's a problem , i'm always here to give my opiion...I'm realistist.

Get a grip, 'Blaze'. It must feel great to be the most despicable person on Obama blog.
If there's any evidence that people want Hope, not discouragement and fear, is the fact that your attitude has made you a "persona non grata" in this community.

Barack's 'Hope' is shedding light, but your comments always seem to try and cast a shadow over everything, on purpose....and they are counterproductive to what Barack Obama is trying to do.

Yes, this is so unpredictable. You can make plausible cases for all three winning Iowa. I think the size of the crowds is important because it sends a message to the undecided voters about where the enthusiasm and energy is.
Advantage Senator Obama in that case.
But the peculiar Iowa caucus system can offset that advantage somewhat....so I'm not seeing it as a huge factor.
Watch for signs of manufactured enthusiasm and energy at Hillary's events.
As an Edward's supporter who greatly admires Senator Obama...there is only one outcome on 1/3 that would depress me.

How do you feel about the 527's that are running on Edward's behalf? Do you have any problem with the fact that he denounced them so loudly in 2004, and now says he can't do anything about them? This in spite of the fact that a former staffer is running them.

I've been with Edward's since Dec. 03. It's troublesome, but not enough for me to toss him aside.
With such harsh rhetoric going back and forth between the two....it's harder and harder to root for both.

From every photo I see Obama attracts youth AND middle-aged women, men, elderly, etc...
IMO, reporters are dismissive of youth votes and youth's ability to decide on who to vote for.

Beginning March 31, I've hosted three Obama house parties, raised thousands of dollars, volunteered at several events, including the big one with Oprah in Columbia, S. C. I've maxed out in personal primary contributions. Yet, few days I receive campaign literature from Women For Hilliary. My sister who supports and contributes to Obama receives the same HRC literature.
I am surprised because I thought there was some way for other campaigns to access information on donors/supporters.

Let me be clear: I'm just repeating conventional thinking, not what I personally think...
Personally, I think this election is different. I think the under-30 group WILL make a difference this time. What the pundits can't or won't see is that Obama is the FIRST politician since the Kennedys who actually INSPIRES younger people...No college student is going to get truly EXCITED to vote for John Kerry or Al Gore (pre-Inconvenient Truth)...we're also at war...
I know Obama has a very age-diverse support base, but I think young people will put him over the top...Weeks ago I predicted Obama will win Iowa by 5-10 points, and I stand by that prediction today...The polls and pundits are missing something...We are about to change the world!!!

Obama attracts people who think for themselves.
All ages, creeds, colors and politics support him.
We are the people who do not adopt opinions and positions just because one group or another tells us to. We deal in facts and reality. We know how to consider the source of information when evaluating it.
We know that people on all sides have something valuable to contribute to the discussion. We're not yellow dog anythings. We're thoughtful, pragmatic, action-focused people.
Mostly, our own positions are labeled as progressive these days. But let me tell you, Republicans also want affordable health care. Republicans also want working people to have decent jobs. Republicans also want people to be able to send their kids to college. But some Democrats have vilified Republicans to the point that they are trapped in their defensiveness.
Nothing, nothing gives me more hope for my country than to see such a pnenomenal grassroots uprising in the name of pragmatism and common sense!!

I think "coventional wisdom" is the problem with all the spin by various networks, reporters, and pundits. This isn't a conventional election, at least not from what I am seeing as an almost 50 year old. Conventional wisdom is what led so many to the Hillary "inevitability" factor. I think some are going to be very surprised at how this plays out.

You are so very right. Barack has run are very unconventional race. He's raised money unconventionally; relies on his grassroot supporters; and is willing to "buck the system" and bring people together to actually accomplish things in Washington. It's a dynamic the media can't measure with their CONVENTIONAL polls and logic. The media is finding out that they cannot force-feed politicians down the citizens' throats. That is the only power we have left: OUR RIGHT TO MAKE OUR OWN CHOICE, AND THEN WE MUST VOTE. I CHOOSE TO SUPPORT OBAMA!!

Not bad, I like old movies, messages for the future if you ask me, kinda like people. I'm a grandmother and my message is never, absolutly never give up hope or faith, what would be the purpose of living in a hopeless, faithless world anyway?
I have faith that the American People will see what Barack really represents, and that is truth. America could use a little truth telling after all the BS, we had to swallow for twenty years, like NAFTA, AND CAFTA.
Somebody please ask Hillary, where the hell are the jobs of the nineties now? Weren't they supposed to be longer lasting than the Clinton Presidency? Another thing, with Bill popularity around the world, where the hell is his support for the American people's health system since he left, what has he been doing while the Bush's ruined our country? Oh that's right, he was riding around with Daddy Bush, and wants to continue to ride around in the Bushes.
Well America has a Bush too, It's a burning Bush from God. He's lighting our way through the quagmire congress and senate as we speak. Doing what needs to be done, not just talking about thinking about it.

US Senators have been very gingerly about making endorsements and, aside from his fellow Illinosian, Dick Durbin, Our Candidate had no senatorial endorsements.
The beltway is really beginning to realize who the victor could be.
In this town of opportunists, for a US senator to come out and speak on behalf of a candidate who was once the underdog and put himself at risk of alienating the Clinton-led democratic establishment.....I cannot - I cannot - stress how meaningful this is!

For those of you who have either reached the maximum allowed contribution or are scraping the bottom of the financial barrel, here are some tips that were given to members of the Grassroots Finance Committee on Dec. 27.
Those of us in the Committee pledged to raise $1,000 by year's end (I slightly exceeded my goal but am still peddling away....). We had already made requests for donations from friends and family. And, so, these were some final tips:
Summary of advice given by Matthew Barzun, a member of our National Finance Committee:
Obama began with 20,000 potential donors and ended up, in the first quarter, with 100,000 donors - an unprecedented fourfold giving.
HRC had started with 250,000 names and got 50,000. Traditionally a great score, but nothing compared to Obama did.
After Q2, we got to 260,000 and HRC's campaign stopped reporting these numbers...
Now we are trying for 500,000....
What we GFCers were doing was planting seeds, farming.
Tactical advice: go back out and ask people again - those who did not donate. Plant a seed. Send the exact same message you first sent. Write: Dear x, happy holidays, just checking in, I am reaching my goal, hope you got my previous message, I am trying to duldill my own pledge"....it's amazing how quickly people will respond to that second e-mail.
They are sometimes embarrassed that they did not answer back.
Also go back to those people who said "yes" but never donated. If they have given their word, 95 percent are good for them.
THEN follow up with those who say "maybe" - they may have questions or doubts. Address those. Give them little factoids, such as his electability, then include the link.
THEN go back to those people you THOUGHT of asking but did not. Your pitch: Talk a lot about the proigress and the success you have had - say: "I made this pledge, I am almost there, please help my get to my goal." Say that you don't have a lot of time left.
One of the things about money in politics: tell people, this is a new kind of politics, a new kind of campaign. Say to people "look, I just need $5, $10 and they sometimes will give more. We will reach our goal of 500,000 donations.
We are so close! We can do it, concludes Matthew Barzun.

The new accounts lady was talking on the phone to someone: "I know! Why does she keep talking so much about her so-called experience in government?!" My guess is they were discussing HRC. (I'm in California.)

Thank you, Senator Conrad.
Your courage in standing against the status quo, and your willingness to speak out for change in DC is welcome, and immensely important to our cause. The partisan wars of the last 15 years have caused stagnation of our domestic policy. With the help of strong politicians like yourself, Obama will change that.

Thanks for such a great endorsement for Sen. Obama. Can you please get your good friend, Sen. Ted Kennedy to come join the Obama Express? We need him as well. ;-) Thank you!

Day of Prayer and Fasting for Barack- Wed, Jan 2, 2008
Hi Team,
To those who believe in the power of prayer: please join my family on Wed, Jan 2, 2008 in a day of prayer and fasting for Barack Obama, our movement and the problems in the nation that Barack wants to solve. By the way, we plan to hold 2 other days of prayer and fasting for Barack during the general election. Please structure the prayer and fasting according to your preference (individual prayer, group prayer, partial fast, full-day fast, no fasting at all, etc).
To those who are not inclined to do the prayer and fasting: hey, we are all still part of the diverse Obama-maniacs family. Let us all keep working together toward our common goal of transforming the political landscape of the nation.
Please post this message on other BarackObama.com blogs that you read and forward this to others. I will post reminders a few days before Jan 2.
Fired Up! Ready to go!

I almost jumped up and yelled when i saw this post and news story!! Amazing that a Democrat who served through the Clinton years would even realize that Hillary cannot bring America together to bring about change. Thank you so much Sen. Conrad! You have truly given us all hope for the future!
