A few days ago, I read a very scary story that said Hillary May Erase Obama’s Fundraising Edge- Link. Chris Cillizza also wrote “Early predictions for the third fundraising quarter, which ends Sunday, hold that Clinton will outraise Sen. Barack Obama.”

Instead of being down, I got fired up! and decided to put some effort on my group fundraising. I contacted a few supporters, including Gregory Smith.

You all know Gregory Smith, who introduced Sen. Obama at the Brooklyn rally. He became a legend among us after he was profiled in a highly viewed video (27,000 people) on Sen. Obama’s YouTube channel. I cried like a baby while I watched that video- Link .

Gregory wrote back to me asking “Brother, how may I help?” I told him even a fiver will boost our group and help the campaign meet the 500,000 donations goal. He responded with a $25 donation. Ever since, the blessings have kept coming.

Jimmie left me a message “Diamond, here’s $50 for the cause”; MsCiara had made several small donations through the matching program, but she still dropped in ten bucks and attached a note saying “It ain’t going to happen”, referring to Hillary outraising Sen. Obama; Michael made his first ever campaign donation through our group. He also made another donation through the matching program; Brian’s group and my group donated to each other’s group; And today I noticed a donation from Mehari and Lorraine. What’s interesting is that I don’t even recall asking them.

Consider this headline:

“Skeptics and late adopters finally jumping on board the Hillary wagon, outraising Obama in third quarter and erasing his fundraising edge”.

Although her figures will be loaded with PACs and lobbyists money and some from $850,000 bundlers, which she may eventually have to return (only after announcing record numbers), we don’t even want to go there, so just consider this other headline:

“Hillary’s front-runner lead, a mere imagination, as Obama outraises her once again, increasing his donors from 100,000 to 250,000 to 350,000.”

I'm going to repost two things that I put out there late last night, and just now (and the second one is already gone!) Will have to use two posts. Just my thoughts about the state of the campaign.

To start, here's a post from a week or so ago from vwcat, regarding the reliability of polls at this stage in a primary (hint: they're extremely unreliable):

From "vwcat," poll numbers from October, 2003:

"Dean Soars into Huge Lead in New Hampshire

Now Leads Kerry 40-17 Among Likely Voters; Clark and Edwards in Distant 3rd --New Zogby Poll

Former Vermont Governor Dr. Howard Dean has opened a large lead over his closest challenger in New Hampshire according to the newest poll by Zogby International.

Dean earned 40%, compared to Massachusetts Senator John Kerry’s 17%. None of the other candidates have exceeded single digits in the polling. Retired General Wesley Clark and North Carolina Senator John Edwards are tied for third with 6% each.

<...> Pollster John Zogby: "This is stunning. Dean leads 43-20 among Democrats and 35 to 11 among Independents. He hits 40 among all age groups, union and non-union voters. His lead is 57-17 among self-described progressives, 50-20 among liberals, and 34-14 among moderates. Married voters give him a 38-13 edge and singles a 45-21 point lead. He holds huge leads among all education groups, among investors and non-investors, men and women. This qualifies as juggernaut status. Can he be stopped?"

I read that wonderful dKos diary, and several folks there pointed out some similaries in Obama today and Truman in '48.

Some background for you young whippersnappers:

In 1948, absolutely all the media said that Dewey (it was Truman vs. Dewey) couldn't lose.

Truman had recently desegregated the armed forces. Strom Thurmond split the Democratic party (which then held the South) and formed the "Dixiecrats," who staunchly supported segregation, and therefore hated Truman. Because the Democratic party was split, the pundits said there was no possiblity for Truman to win.

Also, political polls were new then, and they were using landlines, as today, and found overwhelming support for Dewey.

The famous photo, which I'll bet lots of you have seen, is of Truman holding up the newspaper with the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman" on the morning after Truman won.

What did the pollsters and the pundits miss? The indicators were all there, but they didn't see.

First, the pollsters missed the fact that in 1948, only relatively well-off folks had phones. They tended to be Republicans, who supported Dewey. The pollsters completely ignored most of the country. They had a biased sample.

Second, Truman's campaign was a long "whistlestop tour" of the country. He had his own train and went all over the country--directly to the people--giving speeches from the platform at the end of the train. Thousands and thousands of people came, yelling "Give 'em hell, Harry!" Truman would respond, "I just tell the truth and they think it's hell!"

The pundits and the pollsters missed the huge crowds, and the enthusiasm.

And that's what they're missing today, with Obama. The fundraising, the small doners, the crowds, the enthusiasm. And the new voters who don't show up in polls, because they're not "likely voters" who vote regularly.

They're missing the movement. They can't even see it, because it's outside their experience.

The indicators are all there.

We're gonna win this thing.

Remember, the polls will go up and down like a roller coaster for a long time. Even in the early states, most people don't make up their minds until the final weeks. New Hampshire is famous for that.

But it's important to realize that pollsters start out with a sample of either registered voters, or "likely" voters. "Likely" voters are those who vote pretty regularly--they're considered more reliable. That screens out most young, first-time voters, and indidentally, older voters who have been disenchanted with the system for a long time. Also, pollsters will tell you that young people just don't vote, and usually, that's true. From those samples the pollsters take a random selection and make their calls.

The problem they have with Barack's campaign is that he's attracting large numbers of first-time voters. He's the first candidate they've seen that they're actually for, rather than against. Those people just aren't going to be represented in the pollsters' samples. Ergo, they're starting with a sample biased against him.

So when you see a poll of "likely" voters, such as the recent one from Iowa with the top candidates bunched up within the margin of error, you can make a pretty safe bet that Obama is actually ahead.

But they're also missing the enthusiasm, the crowds, the small doners, the fundraising. These things are as reliable, perhaps more reliable, indicators of support than their "scientific" polls. When you can get 24,000 people to go to a political speech on a Thursday night--and in your opponent's territory, no less--then you're talking about something that hasn't been in decades, if ever.

It seems strange that all these young people who are volunteering, donating, wearing Obama t-shirts, screaming with enthusiasm, aren't going to bother actually to vote. You can argue that Dean had them too, but he messed it up by bombarding Iowa with untrained, out-of-state volunteers and by going negative against Gephardt. Barack isn't making those mistakes.

The pollsters and pundits are calculating for a conventional campaign. Barack isn't running a conventional campaign.

They're missing the movement, of friends talking to friends, of insane, TRAINED volunteers who won't quit.

Just like they missed it with Truman.

In my humble opinion. I'm no expert, but I'm not new to politics, either.

I know this is OT.

Washington Post reports that "Obama brings on Top Lobbyist" and MSNBC firstread cites the report and titled 'Obama hires lobbyist." I know MSM are trying to spin more. But I don't think it is a good move for the campaign. I believe that we can do better than this. Mercado is a lobbyist for the National Rifle Association, the Carlyle Group, the Blackstone Group, Monsanto, Pfizer Inc., United Health Group, Sempra Energy and Constellation Energy, etc. Why does the campaign hire him? I don't get it at all.

He is leaving his lobbyist post and meeting the Obama campaign's requirement that he no longer lobby. At the beginning of the campaign Barack announced a series of steps for transparency in the campaign and the fact that lobbyist would not be able to remain lobbyist before or after. You would need to contact the campaign for all of the specifics but I was impressed and heartened by all of their preparation to maintain both transparency and high ethical standards. In IL where I live, Barack Obama has been known for his hard work on ethics in politics and his own personal high standard of ethics. It is important that we know how hard he works at this type of transparency.

SML, I don't like this decision either. My mom always taught me that Birds of a feather flock together. I'm reserving my final opinion on this issue until I get more info but I don't like the fact that he's leaving one post on one day and showing up as a Senior advisor in a movement that's supposed to be about limiting the influence of lobbyist in our government. The only thing positive I can take from it is that he's open about this guys participation in the campaign. We've all got a big stake in this campaign and if we can't speak to our convictions why even bother to be here.

Agreed - I want to make sure the campaign does better management of the media's spin. I feel that we, as supporters, have some role to play in that, but I just sent a message to the campaign asking them to try to manage the *appearance* of things better, not just the actions themselves. There's not much we as supporters can say or do to change the spin on an internal staff hire.

(I was hoping to open up my news websites today to read about the NYC rally, but instead, found media spin about this hire...)

I just sent a message to the Rasmussen Report regarding their article "Hillary's Great Week" authored by Douglas Schoen who they indicate is a founding and former partner of Penn Schoen & Berland, and a Fox News Contributor. They do not say that his firm is the firm that is doing all of Senator Clinton's polling. In addition to indicating that they should be more transparent in their disclosures, I suggested that they might try alternative polling strategies that do not utilize land line techniques. I reminded them that todays communication is lightning fast and not land based for most of us. For example, I mentioned that I am 68 and use a Treo 700p almost exclusively. Thanks for this great information, SFT. I have been wary of the reliability of Rasmussen polls for a while.

Polling 300 people and publishing results with five percentage-point margins of error strikes me as voodoo science, nor more nor less reliable than the online polls, all of which Obama wins.

It is also worth noting that Rasmussen tends to publish polls of states like FL and MI but conveniently neglects IL. Your information solves that mystery very succinctly.

SFT, post this several times so that more people can see it and call Rasmussen to the carpet.

That firm was or is headed by Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton's chief pollster. Penn worked for the Gore campaign in 2000 but Gore fired him because of his iffy polling strategies.

Penn, according to The Politico, is one of Hillary's most influential advisors and has recently emerged as a would-be Karl Rove; that is the master strategist.

We all need to post frequently when we hear news articles quoting Rasmussen Reports.

Go to: realclearpolitics.com, which is basing much of its poll tracking on Rasmussen numbers. Realclearpolitics.com, in turn, is being used by The Politico and other MSM outlets as an information clearinghouse on polls.

Thus, you have one man using his tentacles to cast a huge net over the skies of transparency in political research.

I'm amused and delighted by the opening "teaser" in bold and the reference to "24.000 Menschen". Ok guys, I'm not Jewish, but as this event took place in New York and the Lower East Side, where so many Jewish immigrants first landed is close to Washington Square, a little Yiddish is order. Any of our Jewish friends should chime in if I got this wrong. Here's the explanation.

Danke! I was so please to see "Now, let's change the world" in German. I read some German because we lived in Germany for 3 years in the 1960's when my husband and I were in our 20's. We lived in Kassel and our daughter was born in Frankfurt. We were in the Army. Anyhow we loved Germany and I must say I read a great deal better than I speak.

Glad you liked it - the article AND living in Germany!
I know that Germans are really hoping for a change in the US - they can't stand the bush government and what it has done to the world.
There is not really a lot of information out there yet about Obama, usually there is not much coverage of any primaries.
But of course, everybody knows the name "Clinton".
When i visited my family last summer I was reading "Dreams of my Father" I showed the book around and said: "Better remember the name Barack Obama - he will be the next President of the United States!"

I don't speak German and I've never been to Germany but my grandmother (Bosch) was full blooded German. Greatest granny in the world, made 2 pair of pajamas for each of her 18 grandkids every Christmas! Man did we look forward to those new pjs each year! Anyway, if she was still alive today I KNOW she would be an Obama supporter.
