What better way to demonstrate the leadership of an Obama presidency than to mobilize our volunteers to assist those in need in the aftermath of the Arkansas and Tennessee tornados. I gave $100 this morning to the Obama campaign to win the presidency, but I will pledge another $100 challenge to other supporters to help in anyway we can to put our service to this campaign into action by showing how we can participate in actually "healing America" in one small place. I know these are states who have already cast ballots, but hopefully that can just show cynics that we are not just out getting votes.
I just gave throught the Red Cross Link and filled out the Tribute section in honor of Barack with the message " We are the people we have been waiting for."

Can the Obama Campaign donate? |

Is there some way the Obama Campaign could make a donation in our names (his supporters)?
Our initial goal for this fund raising period was $6 million. Would Barack, you, Sam, and David and the campaign, consider taking the amount above that goal amount and donating it to the people impacted by the tornadoes?
Or, could we have a specific drive on this site for that purpose?
Might that show what an Obama presidency could look like? An example of the future we are trying to create?
If there are any legal restrictions, that would be different. But, if that were the case, could you place a similar ticker or 'call for donations for the victims of the tornadoes' right on the front page next to the map??
Just a thought.

I just gave $100 to the Red Cross. I noticed a few things:
1) you can direct the funds directly to the tornado support
2) you can write in the organization you are from - I wrote 'Barack Obama supporter.'
So, if for some legal reason, Barack cannot raise funds here for the relief, we can make it known on the Red Cross pledge that we are supporters of Obama.
However, I think we should put our money where our collective mouths are... I just saw Obama in New Orleans talking about keeping our people safe... Could he/we not now come out with a statement that because we are raising so much $$$ now, we wanted to give some of that to the tornado victims relief fund? Go ahead and say it was the idea of the supporters, or whatever...
I know this is probably just not doable, but it is imaginable which is why I just had to put it out there.

Kevin, that's brilliant! I agree, I think we can and should find a way to officially support the tornado outbreak victims and the Red Cross (individually, on behalf of, and/or through the Obama campaign).
I wonder if the "Donate" section of the site can be temporarily redone to provide two options: donate to the campaign for election purposes OR donate to the Red Cross on behalf of the campaign to help those affected by the storms. Could that work?

I am trying to get the Red Cross just to give the Obama supporters our own donation link, for efficieny. If you see my post below, I have created an Obama support group for Obama supporters who pledge to match their Obama campaign donation from yesterday to Red Cross Tornado relief.
Headline--
Senator Clinton lends 5 million to her campaign.
Senator Obama supporters raise 6 million dollars in 24 hours through donation and then a matching 6 million dollars to the Red Cross Tornado Relief fund.

Remember, that every time we give a donation to the Obama campaign we are giving a donation to all of those Americans who may suffer from a natural tragedy during the eight years beginning next January.
This is not only because President Obama will be unmatched at responding to emergencies. It is also because President Obama will re-unite this country. As our experience with Katrina taught us, it is far more difficult for our country to cope with a natural tragedy if our president has divided the people against one another. National morale is crucial to our nation's ability to cope with those adversities that strike at the hearts of all Americans. That is one of the great reasons why "unity is the great need of THIS hour".

To any Hillary supporters reading this, I want you to know that I realize how outstanding the Clintons were at responding to natural tragedies. I know that the Clintons made FEMA the strongest it has ever been, and that one of the reasons why the Katrina response was such a disaster was because George W. Bush destroyed the FEMA built by Bill Clinton.
One of the most admirable things about the Clinton Administration was how well they responded to natural disasters. I would hope, and I do believe that President Obama would be the equal of President Hillary Clinton in that regard, I would never presume to claim that he or anyone else would be better.
But President Obama would be better at healing our nation's wounds and re-uniting our nation. And I believe that this makes a real difference when our nation is dealt a devastating blow either by nature or our international adversaries.

I don't see why it would be illegal. He gave Tony Rezko's $$ to charity, didn't he? Why not ours? This would be such a good move from so many angles. But he needs our money in OH and TX too. I guess we'll just have to give more money. I think the idea of a special drive for it on this website is FANTASTIC. I really hope there are no laws against that.

had written this in an earlier thread, but it may be relevant here:
Donate Time/Money for Poverty
What has made me hopeful ever since I got involved with this campaign is Obama's ability to inspire so many people to step out of their daily lives and come together for a common cause. He has inspired so many of us to mobilize and contribute - whether it's donating, making phone calls, writing letters, talking to family and friends, etc. And this is just to get him the Primary Nomination. It has made me hopeful that as President he will be able to inspire the American People to step up and make a difference in the nation. But so many people who are not involved in the campaign just don't seem to get the meaning behind "Change" and "Yes, we can." They think change is just changing the party in power, or just the fact of a woman in office. But we know it is about empowering the people as a force for good.
So, what if Barack was able to demonstrate this force for good in a small way? At the moment, flaunting $6 million raised for a campaign is great for political junkies but it probably doesn't mean that much to most people. What if he could have just a one day fundraising drive, service drive to do something for people in poverty? If we can raise $6 mill in a day, we could probably raise $3 mill in a day for a good cause. I'd certainly be willing to kick in $25. The problem is finding the cause, as a lot of causes would be politically. If it were to go to a charity in Louisianna we'd be charged with buying votes, etc. Maybe a homelessness charity, or children in poverty? Anyway, just an idea to throw out there. The idea could even be expanded to get people to kick in time also (much in the same way) - perhaps pledge to volunteer 2 hours to local/community organizaion. Show Barack's power as a community/nation organizer!

Alright...
I agree with the person who suggested we do some charity with all THIS money.
While Hilary is donating to herself, let's give to others. We're going to need to working class vote and here's a way to show them we care about them as US. Let's take everything we've given/raised over the 5 million that Hilary gave to herself on Thursday and give it to disaster relief in TEN, ARK, etc....the primaries are over in these state, we can't be accused of buying votes. Being that we are actually giving money, we can't be accused of merely using this for political gain. We already gave that money, it's already there. We'll give more to Barack as we go.

These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress (www.thomas.loc.gov), but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you: 1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site. 2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month. 3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. 4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall. 5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson. 6. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda. 14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death. 15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive. 16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11. 17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11 18. Assist landmine victims in other countries. 19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care. 20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

PART II
The fact's straight from the Senate Record. Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too substantive, so I'll mainly categorize. During the first (8) eight months of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced 233 regarding healthcare reform, 125 on poverty and public assistance, 112 crime fighting bills, 97 economic bills, 60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills, 21 ethics reform bills, 15 gun control, 6 veterans affairs and many others. His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law), **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law), **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law), **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee), and many more.
In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record. . . .

It just makes sense that when our nation is at its lowest point in terms of integrity and international standing, that there would be a strong longing among our people to make a re-commitment to the ideal of national service.
In some ways Obama simply saw what was already there in the American people. The other politicians were so stuck in the old mindset that they couldn't see it. The reason why some politicians believe that this is a fairy tale is because they just do not see what is in front of their own eyes. In many respects what separates Barack from the other politicians is that his eyes are open and theirs are not.
The truth is that the Clintons do not merely think that we believe in a fairy tale. They believe that we ARE the fairy tale.
However, they are learning the hard way. All of that money that we've donated to this campaign is not play money - it's the real thing. The Clintons do understand that our ability to out-perform the Clinton fundraising machine is no fairy tale. They've just put up five million of their own dollars to try to overcome what We the People of this great movement for change have accomplished!! Let's keep showing the Clintons that WE ARE NO FAIRY TALE!!!

There were reasons known only to the Clinton campign why they did not take her name off the ballots for the states of Michigan and Florida.
Now the Chairman of the Democratic National Convention Howard Dean was asked a straight forward question as to whether or not the delegates for the states of Michigan and Florida will be seated at the convention in Denver he implicitly stated that that is the position of the DNC committee to decide upon.
How on earth can he make such a remark publicly, this goes to question his competence as a Chairman as well as that of the committee of the DNC.
All parties(candidates) were well informed that due to these states violation of party rules for moving up their primary dates that the DNC will not seat those delegates from those states.
Sen. Barack Obama was right when he said that this journey would not be easy.
America we are the ones we've been waiting for and change begins with us.
What the Clinton campaign is seeking to do is to get those delegates from Michigan and Florida seated which will be in her favor.
In all of this that the Clinton campaign is trying to do one would have to ask themselves where is the "DEMOCRACY" in all of this ha? We need to change this kind of politics in America.
And if the DNC committee do seat those delegates our voices will even grow more louder and more dissident. And i am talking about the voices of the AMERICAN people calling for change.
A new gate in 2008, just watch us grow more louder and more dissident echoing on a CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN.

Is anyone else completely sickened by this speech by Romney? Not to attack another candidate, but I guess I've been so into supporting Barack that I forgot what politics are usually about. This entire speech is an attack on liberals - making fun of them even, and on Barack and Hillary. It's the most partisan thing I ever heard.
Just makes me want to support Barack even more.
Hey Mitt- maybe I'll donate $50 in honor of your leaving the race.
Anyone else with me?

I heard some of the speech and I agree, it was condescendind to the American people. I noticed he was using the Republican fear tactic about terrorism.
I always thought he was nothing more than a 'USED CAR SALESMAN"; someone who would say anything to get elected. (like HIlliary).

Totally...frankly he's selling out to McCain, but I don't agree with either of them so, whatever.
The WAR talk really SCARES me....is this what conservatives including "Right Christian Right" want? More fighting killing for nothing?
I am an Evangelical Christian, to me that means I should spread love to everyone. My religion does NOT make me a republican or a conservative. What does religion have to do with taxes?
I DON'T WANT ANY MORE WAR!
They are frightening!

I am so glad they posted this, I created a group this morning for just this cause. Now that I see the campaign says the Red Cross is the best way to go, let's do it. We should see if the Red Cross has a way that we can make the donations in Obama's name.
original post below:
Like many of you, I have to go to work today and then my second more inspiring work of helping Senator Obama change this country.
Many of have expressed a strong desire to answer Senator Obama's call to service and help in the Tornado relief efforts. I have created a Group on this web site for people on this site who are willing to match their donation from yesterday for Tornado relief. It is my first group and I don't know how long these things take to activate.
In the meantime, my e-mail is practicingmuse@yahoo.com, add me as a friend and let's just get to work. I would love to see the headlines Clinton loans 5 million dollars to campaign, Obama raises 6 million dollars from donations in 24 hours and a matching 6 million dollars for Tornado relief to the Red Cross. Also, if you can volunteer in any of these areas (OBAMA-teer), please do and wear your Obama gear so that people know that this is because Senator Obama has made us believe in America where we are united and care about one another. Got Hope.
WE ARE THE ONES WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR.
If you guys can help keep posting this throughout the day, I would appreciate it.
This will be the link for the group once it is approved

In the meantime, I will match the first $100 to my Obama fundraising page with a matching donation to the campaign and another $100 to tornado relief/Red Cross. My fundraising page is

On a slightly unrelated note. Someone named Naj from Petersburg, VA was looking for supplies. I only have a few stickers and buttons etc. However, as he posted only a P.O. Box number the post office said that even at the fastest delivery he wouldn't get the package until Monday (no FedEx to P.O. Boxes either). If anyone knows this man or has contact for him, please e-mail me at practicingmuse@yahoo.com. Or, if you are in Petersburg, VA or somewhere nearby with an actual street address, please let me know ASAP and I will duck back out of work and Express Mail to you.

okay is it bad that I sent a note to CNN telling them that we are encouraging supporters to give?
I'm not really trying to use the disaster as a political tool. I just want people to see that this campaign motivates us to do good. I'm just excited by this newfound sense of motivation to give to something I believe in, this campaign and the red cross.
Is that wrong?

No, it's a cool thing to do - and I was thinking this isn't even an Obama v Clinton thing. We should encourage ALL folks to help out regardless of who they support in this election.
We just happen to have this drive going on for the campaign - and we could use it to also drive assistance to our friends in the tornado ravaged states.

By the way, this is from the Phone Banking for Barack group:
Hi National Call Team,

This thread caused me to sit down and write an opinion piece, it's not the first time, for sure, but it's the first time I have in this campaign. What we are standing for here is some much deeper than politics in this country, what Barack has challenged us to do is care about each other and our country again.
Here is the letter:
Can We Be Better Americans?
I’ve been supporting one candidate for President for the past year and a half. Ever since I heard him give the most inspiring speech my ears had heard in my generation, I began to hope that we had a chance to be a whole country again. I’m sure most of you know who and what I’m talking about. The speech was the one Barack Obama gave at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and in it he said some things that I hadn’t heard or felt in a very long time, patriotism. (You can look it up on YouTube if you haven’t seen it and I recommend you do, it’s awe inspiring.
The message that he projects is one of unification and hope, something some in this country don’t want to hear. But I charge you to think for yourselves and to dig down deep in your soul and think about what path this country and its citizens are headed for without hope. We don’t know our neighbors anymore, we don’t volunteer or get involved in community activities, we’ve become apathetic and separate from each other, afraid to reach across the street or even a table to open ourselves up to new experiences. Now all of this is not the fault of the American political system, but they certainly have preyed upon it.
Most of us are weary of politics and politicians who use their divisive plots and spin machines to separate us down the lines of gender, race and religion, but we have a chance at this moment to put all of this behind us. We are on the brink of a historic break through in America where one man has gathered a coalition of people together of all race, gender and class to tell the world that we can be strong again. He inspires us to care about each other and to hold each other up in the face of tragedy, insurmountable hurdles and a country that is literally broken.

Do we dare to care about each other again? Do we dare to dream that we could all be proud of ONE AMERICA? Barack Obama challenges us to believe again, “that there is not a liberal America or a conservative America, but the UNITED STATES of AMERICA”, that “there is not a white America or a black America, there is the United States of America.” You can certainly turn a deaf ear to this, but I wonder why anyone would? I challenge you now, Listen, Hope, and Believe.

Hello Everyone!
I really do think we should stop worrying about what Hillary is doing and for that matter what the media is saying. We need to just stay focus on making Barack Obama our President. You know there is alot of spin out there to get you focus on things that don't really matter and to make you lose hope.
Remember Obama was the underdog coming in, but with the Lord's blessings he will be the top dog in November. We are going to lose some battles, but it's the war we want to win. So keep praying, keep the faith and never give up on what the Lord can do for us. Nothing is too hard for God and for those that love Him. He can make the impossible, possible, the hopeless to have hope, etc.
In Jesus Name!
I don't even watch CNN or MSNBC!
You know when we keep talking about Hillary and what the media is saying, we are really saying that we can't beat her, but we can if we keep our eyes on the prize!!
Stay focus!
Love, Debbie
