I think Sarah Palin will end up hurting the Pro life camp and also her presidential ticket.
Sarah Palin’s choice of continuing with her pregnancy even though she knew the child had Down syndrome has made me think about the abortion issue. I was surprised to realize that Sarah Palin’s choice of continuing the pregnancy symbolizes one of the most questionable and painful positions of the pro life camp. I think every body who thinks about Palin will think about her this particular choice and as a consequence think about pro life positions in a fearful way. I wonder as to why Senator McCain would try to portray pro life position in such a painful way.
As Amy Holmes states in her blog “It’s been noted that 90% of parents who receive the news that their child will be born with this disability choose to terminate.” If 90% of the people have made that kind of a decision it is reasonable to think that most people don’t agree with the choice Sarah Palin made. In an election it seems like a mistake to go against the values of 90% of the people. This is a deeply fear inducing question that we all have been dragged into and the chance is the verdict will reflect the 90% response observed in real life.
Senator McCain may have been heartened by the positive feedback he received about his performance at the Saddleback Church in the interview with Pastor Rick Warren. His highly praised bullet like answer “Life starts at Conception” is basically an engineered answer. It is an answer with a single target or objective: abortion. Answers with objective or targets are called “engineered or strategic answers.” They cannot be either true or false. Such answers just try to presents a choice as a fact.
There is a very remote chance that I will ever face such a question but now I have to think about this question because of a choice Senator McCain has made. I don’t think it is a question I would have liked to have spent any time pondering. These questions have a force of their own and they are not easy to ignore. This is such a deep and painful question that nobody wants to think about it unless faced with such a painful choice. It is a “Million dollar baby” sort of question. Should we bring such questions in a presidential election?
Every time they have to show her “reformer” credentials they also have to show how corrupt the Republican Party has been. She has been doing all the fighting and the whistle blowing against the Republican Party establishment. They will also have to deal with the fact that Senator Ted Stevens the guy with “the bridge to nowhere” got nominated again this year by the Republican Party for a seat in the US Senate. I think Senator McCain’s choice of his running mate will cost him dearly.
