In February I wrote a weblog entry with the above header --
http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/rondrummond/CGCpv
-- and though for a while thereafter I wasn't so sure, recent events suggest strongly to me that Caroline Kennedy would be a very strong choice for Barack Obama's running mate. I was delighted to learn that Caroline has become good friends with the Obamas since she endorsed Barack and that she is acting as a consulttant to his campaign. Even more delightful is the fact that he chose her to head up his Vice Presidential search committee.
Though her lack of foreign policy experience and the fact that she has not yet held elective office might be considered negatives, her postiives are numerous. She has been in public service for most of her adult life, serving in a wide variety of capacities and with utmost distinction. She is politically and philosophically sympatico with Obama, she is brilliant and insightful, and she is of inherent interest to a broad public.
Obama can better fulfill his need for foreign policy expertise through his choices for National Security Adviser and for Secretary of State; what he needs in a Vice President is someone deeply sympathetic to his worldview, someone smart and attractive and with a distinguished record of public service and high, positive name-recognition. His best choice, in my humble opinion, would be Caroline Kennedy.
CAROLINE KENNEDY FOR VICE PRESIDENT!
Please spread the word! We need to get the idea OUT THERE!

This Would Infuriate Clinton's Older-Woman Supporters |

While I admire Caroline Kennedy (from the little that I've read about her), there's no indication that she wants the job. I think it would be a disastrous choice.
That's mostly because of the effect that it would have on Clinton and her supporters. I don't want Clinton to be VP, but there's no reason to be gratuitously insulting to her and her supporters.
If Obama picks somebody else with solid credentials who's clearly qualified, Clinton and her supporters may be a little disappointed, but they probably won't feel personally insulted. But if he picks an "amateur" with no elective office, that would be viewed as extremely disrespectful. It would be saying, in effect, ANYBODY but Clinton.
From what I've read, Clinton wants desperately to be the FIRST woman President. She'd likely feel dissed if Obama picked another QUALIFIED woman (Govs Sibelius or Napolitano, for example). If he picked Caroline Kennedy, Clinton would understandably be justified in going ballistic.
And wouldn't giving the nod to a Kennedy based on her name just be another example of the kind of dynasty politics that so many people don't like about the Clintons and the Bushes?

I like Caroline Kennedy as a person (no, we are not personally acquainted), but Obama picking her for VP would look too much like "Ameteur Night" at the highest level of our government.
Obama is an unconventional candidate as it is. In my opinion, he would be prudent to select a running mate who more fits the conventional mold, probably a current or former governor or senator. There are many fine choices available.
Good Idea!! Caroline for V.P. |

Thomas Jefferson, a founding father, a man who wrote the Declaration of Independence at the age of 32, was at first a farmer, then lawyer and did not become a politician until the fierce urgency of his time. So were the fates of most of our founding fathers. Caroline Kennedy is not a politician but is a accomplished lawyer, and has shown a remarkable steadinees and strength throughout her life.
In the last 7 years we witnessed our Constitution be perverted into something of a third world nation, told that our civil liberties don't matter, rushed into an ill advised war, witnessed the executive branch proclaim power that was not theirs, and we've been held hostage by big oil for far too long. This needs to end.
We all realize that for our generation that time is now, to make our nation better tommorrow than it is today, that is why I support Barack Obama. Caroline Kennedy if nominated as Vice President, could help unify this nation. To many Washington politicians have soured the political process for the many and sweetend the process for the few. Caroline is not one of them. In keeping with Obamas theme of change, unity, and fixing a broken system, Caroline is onboard, and if she's required to step in as President, I believe that she will continue with Obamas core themes. Lets be real, the Clintons would not do this. Obama and Clinton are not compatable, I can say the same of most politicians in D.C., they do not represent the change that we are looking for.
Caroline Kennedy is no Dick Chenney. She is not power hungry, she understands the constitution and the role of a Vice President. The era of the Cherry picking intel, leaking, lying and secrecy would end and the era of the reluctant public servant would begin. Lets pass on the word!
