I have read Barack Obama's eloquent statement with respect to the pending FISA legislation.
It grants retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that may have violated the law by cooperating with the Bush Administration's program of warrantless wiretapping. This potentially weakens the deterrent effect of the law and removes an important tool for the American people to demand accountability for past abuses.
That is in my opinion not acceptable.
because the world is all messed up. The nation is sick. Trouble is in the land. Confusion all around. That's a strange statement. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars.
But I do not see God working in this 21st century.
What I see is the realization of of the fears expressed 47 years ago:

We are seeing the misuse of the power, this nation has been acting out of pure arrogance, with a lack of comprehension.
this world of ours, ever growing smaller, must avoid becoming has become a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be, instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect. Such a confederation must be one of equals. The weakest must come to the now stand outside the room looking at the conference table
I initially supported Barack Obama, but am now deeply disturbed by his abandonment of the people of this nation. He is surrendering to an arrogant misguided man. One who refuses to compromise and assigns blame to those who offer solutions that he does not want. If congress sends a bill without immunity and the president vetoes it, it is the president not the congress who is rejecting the tools he needs.
This was is just the most recent in a series of war that this nation has waged in order to further the interests of the robber barons who run business and industry and profit from the expansion of US industrial power and interest.
An early example was the peaceful invasion and overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii at the behest of the sugar growers' "Annexation Club" in 1893
The immunity provision does nothing for the people of the United States. What it does is protect industry and better enable the current administration to do the peoples business in secret, and bury any evidence of illegal activity in the past.
It is of utmost importance to return the governance of this nation to the people and take it away from the priviledged few who are now in control.
I say it again in case you missed it. The immunity provision buries (perhaps forever) evidence of illegal activity in the past if in fact there was any. If there was no illegal activity, immunity is moot.

For me, this would be the deal breaker, except for the fact that Barack is our last best hope.
