The growing disparity in growth in incomes needs to be addressed by providing educational benefits to a broader group of young Americans. Barack Obama has proposed a plan that will provide $4,000 per year to all prospective college students in exchange for a service commitment. I endorse this policy. However, I believe that we must extend more substantial educational benefits to returning Iraq and Afganistan veterans. I urge that interested Obama supporters read Jerome Kohlberg's editorial in the January 25, 2008 issue of the Wall Street Journal "We Need a New GI Bill". Sens Jim Webb of Virginia, Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas have introduced legislation to fund a comprehensive new GI Bill for another generation of our soldiers. We owe this commitment to our troops and this commitment will support Barack Obama's commitment to our troops and to education, which will in turn begin addressing a main issue in the growing income disparities in our country.
