Change Comes to Indiana

Obama HQ: Right now campaign staff are heading to town and cities across America, as we gear up for an unprecedented fifty state campaign. Staffer Rick Scalf is on the ground now in Indiana, where grassroots support has been building for over a year now.

The campaign for change has hit the ground running in Indiana and Hoosiers across the state are talking about their excitement at the chance to be a part of it.

Erika in Evansville discusses her pleasure at realizing the part Indiana will play:

"It really hit me how important Indiana would be in the presidential election last week when I turned on my TV and saw Obama's national commercial spot. Then I found out that Emily Parcell, who was the [political] director for the Obama campaign in Iowa, had been assigned to Indiana. For the first time since L.B. Johnson, Indiana has the opportunity to make a difference in the presidential election. Obama has all of the momentum going into this fall and his Indiana volunteers are organized, passionate and talented. We have the opportunity to bring it home for Barack in Indiana and I think we will."

Of course Indiana change agents haven't been wasting time over the last month. Sofia in Ft. Wayne helped create the group called Allen County for Obama, which was instrumental in registering 6,000 people in 10 days before the primary.

What have they been doing since?

"This group continues to meet bi-weekly for updates from the campaign, assignments for tabling events and voter registration efforts, data entry and more. We are committed to turning the NE corner BLUE for Sen. Obama. When we heard that we would have a home with the campaign for the General we knew that now we WILL have the ability to effect this General Election! We have a goal of an additional 2,000 new voters by the end of the summer to help in our effort to bring this community together for CHANGE!"

Sofia's not someone you'd expect to hear talking about turning a state blue. After all, she's been a Republican her entire life! That is, until one of her friends convinced her to read The Audacity of Hope.

"I spent time researching Sen. Obama, and his record. I wanted to make sure that he was capable of leading this country. It was one thing to connect with the written word and vision, but I wanted to make sure that he had the experience to lead. After finishing Dreams of my Father I have no doubts about his ability to connect with the needs of everyday people and lead on our behalf.

"I have had the fortune of working five Obama events and heard him speak to all sorts of people. He is intelligent, kind and thoughtful in the words he chooses and his approach. I feel he is exactly what this country needs right now at this moment in history."

Tell us what you've been doing so far this summer to bring change to your area.
