Today's event in Unity, New Hampshire was just the beginning of a weekend of events. Tomorrow, in over 4,000 communities across the country, supporters will be opening their homes to their neighbors to Unite For Change.
Sometimes change can't wait. That's what Michelle from Indianapolis says when talks about why this campaign for change is the first political movement to get her engaged:
I am a stay at home mom of three kids. I have a Master's degree in Social Work. I am very actively involved in my church. I was excited about Obama's background as a community organizer. I saw what he was starting to do with this "movement" to change Washington and that he was getting regular people involved in this. ... We have felt the pains of "trickle down" economics. It just didn't make it down to the regular person's level. The rich got richer and then outsourced all our jobs. It started with the factory jobs. ... Now the good paying middle class jobs are going away. We are getting squeezed with the cost of gas, energy, food and health care rising while the salaries are staying stagnant if we manage to keep a job at all...I really strongly feel that we have a chance for real change. Our country can turn around and be better for all. Also internationally we need a new face on America. ... I like how Obama has worked across party lines with Richard Lugar and the others. I do greatly respect Lugar.

That's why she's hosting more than 20 people who she'll be meeting for the first time at the Unite for Change event in her home this Saturday:
I think the Unite for Change initiative is a great idea. Barack has a great way of getting ordinary people involved in the political process in a meaningful way. I think it's great to invite people together to discuss politics and the campaign. I think it can get people interested that have never been interested before. It is also a good way to get people started in helping with the campaign. It is great that there are opportunities for everyone to help.
Dustin in Jeffersonville, a recently elected Delegate to the convention in Denver, is hearing a lot of excitement too. He talks about the event he'll be holding at the Perkfection Cafe:
This initiative is a great way to kick off the general election campaign. Everyone has been waiting to do their part and now their time has come. We have 47 people signed up! [In my] many years of activism, never have I been able to send out one email and get nearly 50 people to respond! The enthusiasm is tremendous.
After their Unite for Change event, Dustin plans to lead his volunteers to dive into the national voter registration effort. And he's not the only one who's fired up:
When I see people in town they all ask me when they can get started on the general election. Another group of 6-7 people had a meeting to organize in Floyd county. People in general are just excited about being involved and doing their part, no matter how small, to make sure Obama is elected in the fall!
Michelle couldn't agree more:
If we have more of the same I don't know if our country can survive it... I really feel that I can help with this change. I think we have a chance. I can't afford to be apethic.
