What an awesome story. I would like to help but I do not have an email for HQ, so I don't know how to send it to them.

I pray she get's to meet him, boy, will that change her life and those around her that makes her feel so low? Yes, it would brighten her world forever.

This is amazing! I have two granddaughters as precious and there is nothing that I would not do in my power to make their wishes come true. The support of this site is awesome. I have added Josie's wish to our prayer request - nothing is impossible for GOD!!!

Kim yes you can!! ,-) But sending a link is easy. Here's how you do it.

simply click on the field where the http is.

The entire field will turn blue.

Now press strg and C at the same time on your keyboard

You have just copied all the information that is highlighted in blue.

Then you go to the point in your mail where you want what you just copied to appear and press strg and V at the same time

The copied info will appear right there.

In the case of a http (url) it will show as you copied it in your mock up. However when you send it it will show to the person receiving it as a clickable link.

That all there is to it. Of course these intructions are for a PC. If you own a Mac substitute the strg key for the Apple key.

To your last question I know Josie would be really happy to send you something from Germany ;-)

now right click, and choose copy

now go to the contact us other comments questions thing, start your omail, and then go to a blank space, right click again, and choose paste. you're done!!

This "old white" southern woman has gone to bat for your little girl. Hope that the emails to HQ will help achieve her wish.

Makes me sick that people in this world are so cruel and especially to an innocent child. However, living in the south with the good ol' boys all around......I see it all the time.

My heart went out when I heard you describe Josie's dilemma. We are also a "mixed" family but of a different type. Our adopted daughter is Hispanic. She looks very different from myself, her dad, and brother. While she does not face the difficult famuily situation you describe and is much loved by her relatives, it is hard for her as virtually the only Hispanic in her school and neighborhood. I have seen her hurt by comments from classmates and adults, some intentional, many thoughtless. The other day one school chum grumbled about the construction workers building an addition to her school, complaining that there were "too many Mexicans" around. This girl did not even stop to think that our daughter was Mexican-American or that her words about the workers were biased and hurtful. I want to live in a world where people care for people and do not judge them by race, ethnic status, or class. That is one reason I am supporting Barack.

Go to top of page, click on Action, then at the bottom Contact us -- go down a ways and click on Other Thoughts and Questions -- email form will come up!

I feel you man. I have been stationed in Germany off and on for about 10 years of my 12 year militry career so I know what you are talkng about when it comes to the children there who are of a mixed race.

(1) Right click on the first link that I provided under Josie's story

A drop down menu will open there click the option "copy"

(2) Now click on the 2nd lonk I provided.

That will take you to where you can write a mail to HQ.

You can simply write in the heading Remember Josie

and then write additional thought in the comment section. Or you can simply right click in the comment section and choose the option "Paste".

This option will place what you copied in the location where you are.

I figure other expats can really relate because this concerns Barack's trip to Europe and Josie's experience being a foreigner and outsider on other ways too.

I remember well my challenging experiences as a foreigner arriving at a Dutch boarding school when I was 11, and I didn't have the extra mixed-race issue to navigate.

ooh, and I also lived in berlin for awhile and always noticed that mixed children stared at me in the streets when we passed each other. Like if they want to say: " Wow, that is someone who looks like me..."

I don't have that in Amsterdam as that sense of racial loneliness is not present here...(thank god)

I felt lonely also in Germany as a mixed person!

Thank you so much for your comments. I am not here to speak negatively about the German people as a whole. The ARE wonderful people here and some who are very loving of Josie.

There are however real issues concerning race here, as there are in many locations unfortunately. My only goal at this point is to see my little girl have a shinning moment that will hopefully serve to erase what she has had to endure.

I completely understand this little girl and even as an adult when I saw Obama running for president I flashed back to the first teacher in school who made me sit in the back of the class. I grew up in NJ suburbs where they don't call you names to your face but they pretend as if you don't exist. Obama's message moves me more than his skin color, but the fact that people are listening to him despite this gives me hope that's my son's journey to find himself a place in this world won't contain as much hate as mine did. I wrote a letter HQ and if it means anything I will definitely remember Josie. For she is me.

Your story really struck close to home. I refered to having to change Josie's school after her first year. The reason for that, in addition to the treatment of her fellow students, was that her teachers also treated her as though she were 2nd class. Although Josie is a bright child, they effectively placed her every day in a seperate room within the class room and all but convinced Josie that she was not a bright as the other children.

When towards the end of the school year after repeated attempts to gain some change in this situation I asked the teacher if she felt she could teach Josie anything her answer was NO!! Josie told me when I asked her how she viewed herself, "Daddy I am a stupid girl"

This as you can understand broke my heart and we, her mother and I, took immediate steps to change her school.

Where Josie is now she is thriving but still has the issue of her being different to confront.

Dear HQ,

It is my understanding that Barack will be visiting Germany on July 24th. There is a special little girl, Josie, in Germany who would like to meet Barack to give him the gifts she made for Malia and Sasha. He has inspired her to do better in school during some rough times.

As a child she doesn’t understand how difficult it would be to meet him. I know Barack is very busy but It would be so touching to all of us (Obama supporters) if this dream could come true. Even if it wasn’t at the event and he set 5 minutes aside for her that would be great. We now have named it the BaRack Wish Foundation. We make dreams happen. There have been so many touching stories with this campaign and we need your help in this one.

Indeed. Tell Josie that I use to babysit someone like her. This little one that I speak of was sharp as a whip. This person use to ask me "What is this?" What is that?" Every minute this little one was asking questions. One night, I was exhausted and we were going thru a book and once again this little one was pointing at pictures and asking "what is this?" I was soooo tired that I answered, it is a chimney and this little one looked at me and said, no it's not it is a fireplace. Ya know what, this little person was right...and I said it, ya got me. Josie, you too are that person. You have been blessed with a great example. Be all you can be.

Dear Josie,

I have a grown up girl cousin whose dad is dark brown from Samoa, an island in the Pacific Ocean, and her mom is white from the mainland U.S. My cousin likes Barack too! Sometimes when she came to visit us on the mainland, my cousin Josie said people looked at her funny and she did not like it. She is a happy and capable young woman and she is very good at her job helping the government loan money to farmers. My cousin Josie's father got hurt and can't walk very well, so Josie is living with her parents in Samoa and helping her family.

My cousin Josie went to college in Hawaii where Barack is from! I visited her in Hawaii. One thing I like about Hawaii is there are lots of different shades of skin color and it is probably most common to be mixed race.

My favorite Barack Obama quote:

This was one of the big things I noticed when i was an exchange student in Germany. My friend came to visit me when i lived there and he is of mixed race, as are a lot of my friends from college and growing up.

We both noticed that while we saw no mixed race adults, there were quite a few very young children tootling around in strollers and at parks. Not a huge number, but it got us excited. Because while it is tough for the first generation growing up, I think a lot of the changes we have seen in this country and especially among my generation stem from all the common day interactions we had growing up in our relationships at schools (especially in California) where diversity was the norm.

There are still a lot of problems and a lot of segregation, both economic and otherwise, that go on in this country and in the education system itself, but we are getting to a point where conservatives can try all they want to divide us, but it just won't work anymore.

Josie, I am sorry that kids have been so mean to you and that they can't look past it to be friendly with you--but know that the rest of us are behind you! And know that there are tons of others just like you, even if it doesn't seem like it and they aren't where you live.

Josie,

I will send an email and I'll ask Lace for the phone number (I have unlimited long distance to several countries thanks to broadband phone service). My boys got to meet Barack back at the end of February (at the time they were 3.5 years old and 8 months old, they've both had birthdays since). I hope you not only get to meet Barack, but that you get a great big hug from him like my little boys did! You're right, Josie, he really does like kids.

By the way, my kids are mixed race too. Their dad is Chinese. Barack's sister's husband is Chinese and my kids look like they could be his nephews! Barack's family reminds us so strongly how we're all one human family. Even if you don't get to meet Barack, know that there are people who care about you all over the world now.

If you haven't already, you should read the Harry Potter books (or maybe have your dad read them to you) - it sounds like your family is very Dursley-ish (Barack read the Harry Potter books with Malia, by the way). Sometimes it's hard to love people who are so foolish as to judge you on one thing that you have no control over - even when they're family - but every once in a while they mature and surprise you. I hope your family matures someday to appreciate what a great gift they have in you. You have a magical smile in those pictures.

Whatever happens, I'm sure that you have a very bright future with a dad who cares so much to try to make your dreams come true - you're a VERY lucky girl. I hope my sons grow up to be as good of daddies as your dad is.

Thanks :) They're definately my greatest treasures. There's a picture of Michelle holding my baby in the Flickr folder too... they both look so natural holding babies, and they're still young enough.... maybe they'll add to the family while in the WH? The WH needs the pitter patter of little feet running through it again (not that Sasha & Melia will be derelict in that duty, I'm sure), even Chelsea was more of a young adult than child by the time Bill was sworn in, it's time for CHILDREN in the WH! Helps the president remember the more important realities than just what is currently politically easy.

Love shared is love increased (just as fear shared is fear dissipated). I was just watching Barack speak live on CNN and when he was shaking hands afterwards I thought I caught a glimpse of a little girl who looked like Josie from the pictures here. Did you get there? My baby is sleeping on my lap, I wish I'd managed to record it but hopefully if it was her they'll re-air it complete with the hand-shaking part. The girl I saw was on someone's shoulders, hair kinda loose (might have been in a pony tail behind her, couldn't tell), couldn't see the person whose shoulders she was on.

Josie's stories have torn apart the wall of distance between our families, just like hopefully Barack's speech today tore down some walls within the hearts and minds of others.

My little Del (who is named for Franklin Delano Roosevelt) sends his snuggles Josie's way and if you're ever in the Cleveland, Ohio area with Josie I'm sure Liam would quite happily give her a hug for real!

Done from a French woman from Paris, France (message to HQ + the 2 mails).

I'll be in Berlin too. Plane was to expensive, so I'll spend 2 nights in the train. I'll leave Paris Wednesday night and arrive Thursday morning, and I'll leave Berlin Thursday night to be back in Paris Friday morning, for the case there will be any possibility to see or meet (improbable, no public meeting planned) Barack in Paris.

I'm suddenly wondering if there is a possibility to say hi! to Josie there, before the event ? (but in the meantime I want to stay very early at the meeting place). It's just an idea, not to bother you or let things get complicated.

Josie will represent all of us when meeting Barack.

Josie is very lucky to have a father like you who cares so much not just about supplying her needs but fulfilling her wishes.

I pray this wish come true, but more so that you continue to encourage her to be proud of who she is. 90% of Black America is actually of mixed heritage. Some further back than others. We are light, we are dark, we are yellow, we are red, we are brown we are black.

Barack has shown us we have more in common than we have differences. I hope after she gets to meet Barack, that you will show her all the effort you put in to make this happen. She may not fully understand it now but will in the months and years to come.

Good luck in your quest to meet Obama. I have a son (5) and daugther (8). They LOVE the Obama family and don't understand why I can't invite his girls over to our house for dinner. Barack has been a huge inspiration to us all. I got a chance to see him in live in Dallas, I took my daughter out of school and we stood in line for 4 hours so she could witness history. She also made her own Obama signs and has volunteered with me on the campaign trail.

Kids can change the world. There were many children involved in the civil rights movement in the US, and also in South Africa. Tell your daughter that she is smart, beautiful and to always stand up for herself. Or as Obama says, "stand for change."

Hi Reggie. I haven't been to the blogs in awhile, so I just saw your blog about Josie. I've just emailed and will absolutely keep you both in my prayers.

Also, I just read at DailyKos that Obama will be speaking Thursday on the eastern side of the Victory Column - the Siegessäule - in Berlin, and they are expecting anywhere from 10,000 to a million (!) people. What a sight that will be!!

You're a wonderful dad, and Josie is so blessed to have you. She is such a beautiful child and in a kinder world, she'd never be treated as anything less. Fortunately, she has a HUGE Obama family that sees her perfectly. I really hope her wish comes true, and that it's just the first of many more to come.

I sent in the email and request to HQ last week and am happy to hear the update. I also forwarded the story on to an Obama staffer I know from Germany in case he knows anyone on the ground that may help Barack get the request. Senator Obama took the time out to sign one of the books we have that are being donated to the kids from Bushwick Brooklyn that are going on the Journey for Change volunteer trip to South Africa (see my blog Link, so I feel confident he would also take the time to meet Josie too if the schedule allows. She is in my thoughts and prayers.

Not sure if you have read Dreams of my Father, but there is a kind of similar story about Mary's kids from Obama's early organizing days on page 175.

I prayed as well. I hope Josie was able to see Obama during the speech in Berlin. It is my understanding that Obama was instructed by U. S. authorities not to visit anyone outside what the U. S. State Department considered appropriate. Otherwise, they would reclassify what type of trip he was doing.

I think I saw you and Josie (holding a stuffed animal, sitting on your shoulders) in a picture in a UK newspaper (Daily Mail? I was at the mechanic) !!!! It looked like you were right up fairly close to Obama at the Victory column in Berlin. Please tell, how was it?

Look on the far left of the picture, about level with Barack's head, and that looks like Reggie with the same baseball cap as in the Remember Josie collage (do you ever take that hat off, Reggie?)
