The Independence Day Obama Fundraiser Car Wash turned out to be a success, even though it wasn't a big event. Around 3 p.m. volunteers, including Melissa Evans, Rachel Williams, and Shamika Minesee, gathered at the Advance Auto Parts store on Jordan Lane in Huntsville and revved up some enthusiasm for the Obama campaign. The teenagers who were helping out stood at the corner and held handmade signs and yelled "Car Wash" and "Vote Obama" to passers by. They got plenty of thumbs up, smiles, and appreciative honks as well as quite a few donations from those who wanted to help but didn't have time to stop for a car wash. Rachel rolled her newly "Obamafied" car to the edge of the street in front of Advance Auto Parts to help draw motorists' attention. Melissa and the other volunteers washed cars and sold Obama buttons and shirts to those who did stop. Shamika got several young people registered to vote including a 23-year old young man who had never before done so.
In all it was a good event and a good day. Despite the fact that traffic was light and rain threatened the entire time, the volunteers managed in just two hours to raise money, rally spirit, and register voters, all of which helps to make a difference for the Obama campaign. One man driving by got so excited when he saw the Obama car and signs that he turned the wrong way in the street in his effort to get to the event. Fortunately he didn't have a mishap and his excitement wasn't dampened in the least. He got his car washed, gave a donation, and left his name and number requesting that he be contacted the next time anything happened so he could help.
I'm sure Huntsville volunteers will do bigger and better things in the near future. But for one holiday afternoon, spending a couple of hours trying to help get Obama elected and gain independence from four more years of Bush policies was certainly was time well spent!
