Look: FDR created the FNMA which was basically crucial to the creation of a Middle Class in the USA. (Were they immature enough to say "Fannie" back then?) LBJ privatized it-- a thoroughly foolhardy move. (Notably, at least one book makes the strong case that Johnson was among those responsible for the murder of JFK, who had BTW a few months prior just put money creation/backing in the hands of Congress, taking it back from the unaccountable, private entity called "Federal Reserve". (Hey BO, how about estimating the M3 Money Supply for us?!!?)) This key backstory of FNMA is never mentioned on US MSM: what it tells us is that privatization aint workin out for us.. which even the uber-capitalism worshipping Wallstreeters are realizing now.. threating the planet with imminent Great Depression if their losses aint immediately Socialized.. gains to be privatized when they occur though, of course! (Anyone else notice how Randi Rhodes (www.therandirhodesshow.com) seems to think she invented the phrase "socialize the risk, privatize the gains"..?... I actually heard it in a Noam Chomsky (http://www.zmag.org/znet/writers//?next=21) speech some 20 years or so ago.)
Couple this weakminded sheepishness ("bipartisanship" used yet again... this is getting so, so old... as a euphamism for [Dems cave after putting up a measly rhetorical resistance to Repug agendae]) with that which we see towards the offshore drilling ban. I appreciated Barack mentioning a few times how absurd it was that the Right spinmachine made headway in convincing people to favor drilling, when the numbers show it would amount to a grand total of a few cents-worth change in gasoline price, which wouldnt even happen until almost a decade from now. Trouble is, he was far too Kerry-like in doing this, as he is with many things: way, way too niceguy in his approach, not utilising the gobs of glaring, huge negatives which the typical US TV idiot population have no idea are out there because they dont read something like WWW.COMMONDREAMS.ORG everyday.
How about using some of this massive fundraising exposing how manipulative and exploitative it is for Repugs to mislead people like this? Seems they must have focus-grouped it, and the degree to which this bashes environmentalists and hippie surfers is way more attractive to the the gas-guzzling fat-ass idiot masses than any sane, sciententifically sound argument about cost/risk/reward analyses.
