WASHINGTON - President Bush congratulated President-Elect Obama Wednesday, offering a moving tribute to his successor that invoked Martin Luther King and the struggle for civil rights. "No matter how they cast their ballots, all Americans can be proud of the history that was made yesterday," Bush said from the Rose Garden of the White House. "Many of our citizens thought they would never live to see that day," Bush said. "This moment is especially uplifting for a generation of Americans who witnessed the struggle for civil rights with their own eyes and, four decades later, see a dream fulfilled." RELATED: OBAMA, OUR FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT, IS AN INSPIRATION It was the Rev. King who famously challenged the nation to end segregation and achieve racial equality from the steps of Washington's Lincoln Memorial in 1963, when he thundered, "I have a dream." Bush declared that the election yesterday of Obama, the son of a Kenyan and a white Kansan, was "a triumph of the American story, a testament to hard work, optimism and faith in the enduring promise of our nation." RELATED: OBAMA WINS HISTORICAL RACE "It will be a stirring sight to watch President Obama, his wife Michelle and their beautiful girls step through the doors of the White House. I know millions of Americans will be overcome with pride at this inspiring moment that so many have awaited so long," Bush said. The 43rd President invited the 44th man elected to the job to join him soon at the White House for a visit. Obama aides, meanwhile, have long been preparing for the transition process, which Bush promised will get his "complete cooperation." RELATED: COLIN POWELL CALLS OBAMA'S ELECTION 'HISTORIC' Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - herself a ground-breaking African-American official, who as a child heard and felt the 1963 bombing of a black Birmingham, Ala., church that killed four little girls - hailed Obama's victory. Rice told reporters she was "especially proud" of the Illinois Democrat's "inspirational" election. Email Print Buzz up!Discuss this Article 6 comments so far. Add your comment below!. Give Obama a gead start to pull us out of this ditch. Obama shouldn't wait for Bush to inform him on decisions Bush makes, Obama should have a representative sit in on Bush's meetings until Jan. 1. michael_knight Nov 5, 2008 10:45:03 AM Report Offensive Post Man it feels good to be American! Let's go Kill Bin Laden! michael_knight Nov 5, 2008 10:49:17 AM Report Offensive Post Yeshua...Transistion is already under way. Offices are being prepared for Obamas Chiefs and staff and Records are being compiled to give to them. Many government employees were hoping this day would come. I've had Secret Service tell me that they won't let anything happen to him, and that they are working extra hard to protect him. stuff-it Nov 5, 2008 10:56:23 AM Report Offensive Post Nice job Bush.
