Background Information
A few years ago, a bipartisan coalition in Congress voted to ban new drilling for oil and gas in the Great Lakes .
Currently, President Bush seeks to reverse the ban and permit drilling.
Drilling for oil and gas in our Great Lakes and along our coastlines is too risky! Leaks and pollution can occur, and neither the drilling companies nor the states can be relied upon to use or enforce safe drilling practices or clean-up contaminated sites. Drilling companies are notorious for pulling out without notice or going bankrupt. States frequently don't have the staff or the funding to clean-up the mess left behind by drillers. Lawsuits against careless drillers can take years, even decades, to conclude, and even then there's no assurance that the offenders will be held accountable.
There isn't that much oil under the lakes anyway.
Drilling new wells isn't the answer to our energy problems.
The honest answer to our oil problem is to use less of it, and that means better fuel economy faster and a shift toward renewable energy. Instead of the failed policies of the past, it's time to break our addiction to fossil fuels by shifting our priorities and our policies toward creating a clean energy economy.

test --> Bi-Partisan Bill Introduced to Restore the Second Amendment Rights of D.C. ResidentsOn July 31, in a bi-partisan effort, Congressmen Travis Childers, John Dingell, John Tanner, Mike Ross and Mark Souder, along with 47 of their colleagues, introduced the Second Amendment Enforcement Act. This critical legislation overturns D.C.'s recently enacted emergency laws that continue to defy the recent Supreme Court ruling by continuing to restrict District of Columbia residents' right to self-defense. This National Rifle Association-backed bill is needed to enforce the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in District of Columbia v. Heller.

Special Travel Warning on Ammunition over .50 Caliber Over the past few months, NRA-ILA has learned of cases where traveling hunters have been stopped from transporting ammunition over .50 caliber in checked baggage. This has caused significant problems for hunters who use cartridges such as the .505 Gibbs or .577 Nitro Express. Read more
Register To Vote or Register Your Guns! With the 2008 campaign already well underway, it is critical that gun owners and gun rights supporters are registered to vote in advance of respective deadlines. Make no mistake, opponents of our freedom will be working hard over this next year to gain momentum they need to attack our rights. It is critical that we as gun owners are registered to vote and that we most assuredly vote on Election Day.
NRA Files Second Amendment Cases in Illinois, California
Fairfax, Va., June 27-Following up on yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling that the Second Amendment protects a private right to possess firearms that is not limited to militia service, the National Rifle Association of America today filed five lawsuits challenging local gun bans in San Francisco, and in Chicago and several of its suburbs.
“The Supreme Court held yesterday that the Second Amendment right is exercised individually and belongs to all Americans,” said NRA chief lobbyist Chris W. Cox. “These lawsuits will ensure that state and local governments hear those words.”
Supreme Court Declares That the Second Amendment Guarantees an Individual Right
Fairfax, VA – Leaders of the National Rifle Association (NRA) praised the Supreme Court’s historic ruling overturning Washington, D.C.’s ban on handguns and on self-defense in the home, in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller.
“This is a great moment in American history. It vindicates individual Americans all over this country who have always known that this is their freedom worth protecting,” declared NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. “Our founding fathers wrote and intended the Second Amendment to be an individual right. The Supreme Court has now acknowledged it. The Second Amendment as an individual right now becomes a real permanent part of American Constitutional law.”
