Some polls in parts of the state will be open later Saturday, according to my understanding, but for us here, we will switch over with our afternoon crews to Get Out The Vote (GOTV). Those who didn't take advantage of early voting will have to wait regardless of the length of the line.
Or they won't vote at all. And that's what is still a big concern. As I have been telling supporters I find on the campaign, we appreciate their support, but it means nothing at this stage of the game. When they look at me incredulously, I remind them that "support" isn't counted on election night -- only votes.
We need volunteers in nearly every capacity the last four days, Election Day inclusive. There are 300 staging sites out in the field and closer to the polling places, from which every imaginable task will be run just as it is in the county or regional HQ. I am a canvassing captain and I have a statistics captain who will also stay behind and make phone calls. We'll need runners to get to the polls and report on who has voted on Election Day so we don't keep harassing them. We need people to provide food and drinks not only to the Obama volunteers but also to voters at the polls, to ensure they stay in line and cast their votes. We can't electioneer -- that is, advertise that we are Obama supporters (it might be toeing a fine line to wear Obama apparel inside to offer food and drinks) -- but if we do it right, word can get around whom we support. For example, the greeter at the 50-foot line could tell voters, "We have drinks and snacks inside for you while you wait."
Smart campaigning now through the election will win this thing for Barack. But we need your help and we need the help of your friends and family. Get everyone you know -- especially Obama supporters -- to the polls, even if you have to drive them yourself. Our personal and collective security may be at stake in this election, and I do not want to take a chance on having someone in the Oval Office who has been erratic and unpredictable these last couple of months.
