I wrote this elsewhere on November 3. I doubt anyone with an account on this site needed to be urged on. But I hoped to convince even one person on the other site to vote.
I urge every person who is registered to vote to get out there and vote. If you think that your vote does not count, just remember this: It counts every bit as much when you do NOT vote.
I believe that if the people who do not vote DID vote, this country would be a different place – a better place. If you do not like either candidate, look deep within yourself and try to find a way to make that decision. Ask people whose opinions you trust. It’s not too late.To women – remember that many people fought very hard to earn women the right to vote. Do not throw it away. Stand up and be counted. To African Americans – remember that people fought and died to secure you the rights you now enjoy, including the right to vote. Stand up and be counted. Help to chip away at the enormous wall of racism. Your beliefs matter.
If you think you are not informed enough to vote, and that people who vote uninformed are irresponsible, please reconsider. To be a purist about voting means living with the decision a lot of other “uninformed” people made. Wouldn’t you rather be part of the process than to allow everyone else to decide for you?If you are not a citizen, please urge non-voting people you know to vote. There are still places in the world where certain classes of people cannot vote. If that is true in your native country, explain that!To the unregistered -- it is too late for you to vote. But please think about it for the next election. You should vote if you have that right for all the reasons I list in this piece, and probably some I haven't thought of. Register to vote for the next election.
Thank you, and please do the right thing – vote.
Postscript: If you DO vote and it doesn't go your way in the end, you still did the right thing. You may feel disappointed or betrayed, or like it wasn't worth it. But that's what elections are about. You don't always win. It's still important to vote.
