HISTORY IN OUR TIME
Many times in our lives, we find that historical moments that we live through are only realized retrospectively. I pray that this is not one of those moments. I pray that we appreciated what God has blessed us to be a part of.
389 years ago, the first slaves were brought to the British colonies in America. 232 years ago, America declared its independence. 45 years ago, Dr. King gave his “dream speech”. 43 years ago, the Voters Rights Act was signed.
Today, August 27, 2008 at 5:52 p.m. central standard time, by unanimous acclamation, Barack Obama was declared the Democratic Nominee for President of the United States of America.
So many died in the struggle, so many died waiting, but we are here! We are witnesses to the dream made real! We are the generation of fulfillment! We are the ones, we’ve been waiting for!
Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglas, W. E. B. Dubois, A. Phillip Randolph and Fannie Lou Hamer all did their part. They did the hard part. Now, it is our time. Now, we must take what we have been blessed with and make it work.
Barack Obama is now the nominee. We must do all that we can to carry the baton that has been passed to us. What a pity it would be and how pitiful we would look in the eyes of the world, if now that he is so close, he does not win because his own people did not vote! We must get involved. Is it too late for voter registration? If not, volunteer for a sign up drive. If it is, volunteer to knock on doors, make phone calls or stuff envelopes.
