One thing that the dissenters and supporters of Obama's choice of invocator have in common is that neither side has bothered to try to have the discussion that Obama has said he wanted to instigate by choosing Rick Warren. Since I am the one who is thinking of this, I have decided to be the one to start the discussion. The subject is gay marriage or relationships, and since this can be very emotional, I want ppl to read the following and think before proceeding.
I want whoever reads this post, to read the following 3 questions first, and then decide whether or not they want to continue.:
1) Are you willing to have this discussion without either wristslapping the opposition, or getting so mad that the conversation deteriorates?
2) Are you willing to not make a person feel from the get-go of saying how they truly feel? Will you create an atmosphere of openness?
3) Are you willing to be 100% HONEST about your true feelings, and not worry about political correctness?(This does not mean to be rude, mean, or disrespectful to a group, but just don't sugarcoat your opinion either).
If you want to still participate in this discussion, click into the post:
The rules of the discussion are that I will ask one side a question that seems simple, but may be quite difficult when it comes to answering them with honesty. Then those with the opposing view can reply to the response given by the first side, and then the first side can come back with a defense of their stated view.
To opponents of gay marriage:
Why are you against gay marriage? What are you afraid will happen to society if gay marriage is allowed?
Do you have a problem with gay MARRIAGE or RELATIONSHIPS? Explain.
Do you understand where gays are coming from?
R U open to the idea that perhaps the Bible was misinterpreted? What else could God be talking about?
How would you feel if you found out that God is not against gay marriage after all? Would you still feel uncomfortable with gay marriage or relationships?
R U willing to give the Bible another read?
To supporters of gay marriage:
Why do gays need to be married?
Do you understand where gay marriage opponents are coming from?
R U open to the idea that the Bible DID disallow gay marriage or relationships? What are your feelings on that possibility? What if its true?
To opposers of Gay Marriage:
How are you so sure that a person is not born gay?
What would you do if you found out that the opposite of what you believed is true, and person CAN be born gay?
To supporters of Gay Marriage:
How are you so sure a person IS born gay?
What would you do if you found out the opposite of what you believed is true? That somewhere in life, early in childhood, teenage, or adulthood, a gay person made a conscious or unconscious decision to look at a member of their own gender a certain way?
To both sides:
Is there a way to ever find out if a person is born gay? Scientifically, or otherwise? When or how do you think this could come about?
