Just watching MSNBC the road to the White House and found out the plane that Palin aka (the wicked witch of the north)claims she sold on e-bay, was never sold on e-bay. I guess you can just make up fact on what you do for VP spot.

I was thinking today about how we're not supposed to mention Palin's pregnant daughter...or discuss her lack of experience. We're not supposed to even acknowledge her, I guess, because it takes us "off message" ...and to a large extent I agree.

BUT TO ALLOW HER FREE REIGN TO MINIMIZE BARACK'S EXPERIENCE...HIS TIME AS A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER...TO ALLOW HER JABS TO GO WITHOUT A RESPONSE MAKES SARAH PALIN THE NEW SWIFTBOAT.

I don't know the exact right balance...maybe its not addressing *her* in the response...but for Barack to just take her punches and not respond with strength, makes her the perfect weapon...the perfect swiftboat. By being "gentlemanly" and ignoring her, Barack's in danger of allowing that chick with a filthy, lying mouth and her own set of cojones to take him down the way John Kerry inadvertently allowed the lying swiftboaters.

SOMEHOW, HER LIES MUST BE ADDRESSED while staying on our message. She cannot be allowed to pick up momentum. And pretending she's not relevant or a threat is absurd, naive, arrogant and dangerous.

I understand Sam's frustration. Palin is not the answer - she is the problem. She is an extremist whose very elevation insults everything Hillary has fought for and defended. I cringe whenever Palin talks, but she cannot be given any type of importance by a concerted response. To respond to her would be to raise her stature. The only one with any hope of engaging would be Joe Biden and then he has to be tread carefully lest he be accused of sexism and being a "good old boy". So she should be treated as a pesky gnat from Alaska whose bite can sting, but who will eventually finish it's life cycle and fade away.

The best defence is to stay on message but make that message an easily digestible sound bite that can be hammered over and over and over again.

The reinvention of John McCain
I have watched the RNC these last two days with a growing sense of foreboding. Mc Cain is trying to reinvent himself and become a non- republican Republican, blaming Bush and the Democrats for the gigantic mess we are in. Mc Cain says that he will be different this time, he will make the Republican party the party of common man, but looking at the faces at the convention, I saw very few faces of people of color, and many of them were reporters. Apparently the common man is a upper-class white man.
He will give us less government, like the less government that changed the rules on mortgage loans to allow many to buy into the overpriced homes that are now being foreclosed, and financed with taxpayer money through Fanni May. The rich got richer and the rest of us got poorer. He still has his seven homes, and we are going to pay for the failed mortgages for years to come.
And the no child left behind that requires teaching of abstinence for birth control, and won’t allow mention of other methods, clearly an imposition of fundamental Christen teachings. The Republican values that McCain still subscribes to in spite of his reinvention are not for the poor and middle class, and clearly not for the non-white among us.
If these non-Republican people do not vote, we are going to 4 more years of the same stuff, and watch our civil liberties disappear in the name of the defense of America.

I, too, with Charles of Livermore, have a keen sense of foreboding concerning McCain's new stategy. There are very few "commentators" or pundits out there with common sense and insight, but David Gergen is one of them. He's correct when he states that Obama/Biden need to whittle down their message to one or two sentences and hammer it over and over again. They won't win otherwise. The American people do not have the patience to listen to a long discussion of great ideas. I have yet to see this strategy and it does not bode well for this team.
It's about the ECONOMY, It's about Healthcare, It's about MY life, not the life of the wealthy. I and the American people need to hear that idea in short declarative sentences or this election is lost to four more years of smug and snide hatefulness.

I certainly hope the Obama Campaign doesn't fail to use McCain's own words in an add supporting Obama for president. McCain said in his convention speech,  “I fight to restore the pride and principles of our party. We were elected to change Washington, and we let Washington change us. We lost the trust of the American people when some Republicans gave in to the temptations of corruption.” ̷ 2;

I'd suggest the experts decide whether it would play better with just the first two sentences or all three. I looked for and found the quote by googling "transcript McCain Convention Speech."
It begins a paragraph in the middle of page 4 of a 10 page transcript.  My vision for the add goes something like this.

Even John McCain agrees that the Republicans have lost the trust of the American people by giving in to corruption. Then play the excerpt followed by a short excerpt from an Obama speech saying it is time for a change.

I'd had a great government teacher my senior year that had us so psyched about how our vote was what made us a democracy & democracy was what made us America that I think every single student in his class has probably voted in every election for the last 28 years.

I'll never forget that first time voting & I'll probably be crying in the voting booth this time.

I was trying to think of something we could do to make money for Obama off of the trolls. So here is what I was thinking but I don't know how we can get it out to everyone.

I was thinking that when we have a troll instead of arguing with the "person" we just put our fundraising link. Anyone putting their link will match a $5 donation to someone elses page when their page is given the $5.

I don't know if that makes sense but you guys tweek it and come up with an idea. I like the idea that we made 10 million dollars while under attack I think that we should keep that going on here with us.

Troll Post, if you are able to give $5 to the person that donates $5 to you then post your link under the troll post. Of course report the trolls comments as well. Would this work.

Any other good fundraising ideas. Don't forget McCain got a big 84 million dollar check today!

A video of Jon Stewart on you-tube that showed republican analyst saying earlier in the campaign that these things were wrong such as : being Governor of a small town, teen pregnancy, Being offended when being attacked for being a women. Then later on when it came to Sarah palin these same people where claiming it was ok to run a small town that pregnancy was a private matter, and that you shouldn't use gender as an excuse. Now this video is removed from you-tube because it violated a copyright claim.

I just posted about this in the previous blog. Because O'Reilly is so rude, I most likely will not watch the rest of the interview. I think I'll just wait on Sen. Obama's interview with Keith. If Keith does leave MSNBC, the only credible journalist they'll have is Rachel, and she probably won't last long because she also believes in truth and honesty in reporting the news. I guess I'll just have to watch and listen to Democracy Now from now on. I don't trust any of the other msm networks.

I agree that O'Reilly is an absolutely rude man who could at least be decent enough to shut it when he has asked someone to respond. I do not however think that Barack should just walk away in these tedious situations. Just like the VP Professor Umbridge*giggles*, these candidates are proving themselves to the American people. Barack has been extremely diplomatic thus far and that is a great strength that scares the Republicans whether they will admit it or not. The Republican media will do what they can to bait Senator Obama so they can prove he has a bad temperament and state after all that if he cannot stand a conversation w/ O'Reilly then he certainly cannot handle foreign nations. What I love most about Sen. Obama isn't so much what he says, which is amazing, but what he doesn't which is profound. Anyone paying attention to Barack's demeanor hears what he is saying loud and clear.

-I will not be distracted from the issues.
-I will weaken my enemies w/ patience.
-I will win the Presidency of the United States because I believe in these people and they believe in me and that counts for more than anything the McCain/Palin ticket has to say for itself.

My God I am proud of this man and still wonder how this blessing has come to us, but they do say, ask and you shall receive. Someone should have told McCain to be careful what he asks for.

Dilemma is an often misused word. It actually means "two horned" and refers to a situation with two unpleasant alternatives.

On Father's Day, Obama gave a speech ripping into fathers, blasting "walk away dads." That's fine, but there are a whole helluva lot of dads who are kicked out of their kids' lives by Family Courts that refuse to enforce parenting time orders. They count, too - in spite of Obama's statements, they are human beings who have been injured by and/or ignored by our system. Obama's website says he will, if elected, "force men to pay child support." Hillary's made reference to gender-neutral "enforcement of child support orders." 21% of custodial parents in this country are dads. The moms don't have to pay support? Huh? Repeated, repeated requests to his campaign to correct this have been ignored; if we learned nothing else from Mein Kampf, it's that we should take a politician's words as true. Obama has some serious gender issues. He then picks Biden, who authored the Violence Against Women Act in spite of the fact that nearly 1/3 of spousal homicides have male victims. He's been asked (to the point of billboards being put up near his office) to make it gender-neutral. He won't. He says the VAWA is his greatest accomplishment. Again, we (dads, men) don't seem to count; we're less than human. I can't vote for that ticket. But I can't disregard all the other issues I care about (only a few of which are above) ignored. Sit out the election? I vote in PA, which is polling a tie for Obama and McCain - my vote matters.

On the other hand, I Senator Obama on almost every other issue and am truly, deeply afraid of what a McCain / Palin presidency would do to the country in terms of choice, the economy, tax cuts for the rich, restoring habeas corpus, etc.

What to do? It's a dilemma, all right. The very definition of the word.

In case I wasn't clear, I was, prior to the fathers' day fiasco, av avid Obama supporter. I donated $500+, had bumper stickers, t-shirts, signs, talked him up to my friends....

I would love to go back to those days, but can't unless he addresses these gender issues. I'm afraid of McCain, but cannot bring myself to go into a voting booth and turn my back on issues this important. I wish there was some way to reach him on these issues and he'd change his position on them :-(

David, you asked what to do. Keep advocating Obama/Biden campaign for the change you want to see, which is a more progressive policy and recognition towards child-care support and domestic violence, that both men and women can be the abusers. I didn't realize it's such a problem, until you brought it up. So please keep advocating for the change you want. That's Democracy in action, and that is what Obama is above all in support of.

Dave, I agree with you that gender issues are important..However I think you're taking this a little personal to the extent that women for the 21% of fathers who is the primary care giver for children (a little less than a 1/4) aren't made to pay child support, based on what Obama said. Often times people do use the majority position in stances when they discuss issues like this, but I don't think he means to exclude you bec of your gender. It's just a matter or what he grew up with (single mother, dad gone as a child) and what is so commonly seen in society today (believe me I know from experience).

In the state of PA (I live in Philly) women are made to pay child support as the non-custodial parent and those rule are gender neutral. I understand how you feel, but I know women who pay child support right now. It's just that a lot of men don't go to the courts to get child support.

I agree with your feelings on Joe too...And you should continue to lobby to get the law changed and an addition to the law regarding violence against men.

Regarding your dilema...I heard something on the radio today that was interesting.

Republicans managed to bite the bullet and support McSame lock, stock and barrel even though they didn't agree with him on some issues, but becasue they disagree MORE with Barack Obama they've rallied to him and will vote for him. Contrast that with Democrats who seem to always find 1 issue that they disagree with for their candidate and they harp on that to the extent that they talk about not voting. One one agrees with all policies of their candidate all the time. Its not possible. And with your issue I think it's easier, because I believe you agree with his stance, just not the way he framed it. You want to make sure that it includes men also...and a trip to the courts would ensure that. BO's a lawyer...appeal to the law and the fact that it's discrimination, to not make it gender neutral.

Thanks for responding. Did you see the video link? It's not the only instance. But was the straw that caused me to shout out.

First, it's one thing to point out how others might attack Obama, as terrorist, or whatever. But to continuously bring up the attacks yourself I think does more damage than mitigates.

Second, it just appears to me he's playing defense too much, and still correcting people's perception of him. I think the game changed after Thursday.

Third, after Thursday, I personally want to see him go on offense, to get through that 50% barrier. He and Biden are doing it on the issues, but I want to see him face off the the SoCons, who don't have a lock on moral values. I think Obama just needs to do more himself on that. I know it's not traditional Democratic Party, and many in the base might be turned off, but it's time to play offense on moral values.

Four, now the Palin story creates such an opportunity for Americans to compare and contrast, and see how much of a joke the SoCons in Republican parties are, and how hypocritical they are, espousing moral values, but falling way short themselves. Obama is right to say we can't/shouldn't go after Palin's family issues. But at the same time, let's ramp up / highlight how the Obamas and Bidens are great family people, with interviews, etc.

I am sorry but this is incredibly insulting... as a post. It is also pretty divorced from the REALITY of this country. Whoever doesn't think that he better keep addressing these issues and often has NO CLUE about elections and politics... REPETITION is the KEY to everything... He should keep saying it and he should keep drawing attention to these issues at every point and every chance he gets. He is going to need 65 million votes (at least) to win this thing. So 36 million is a long, long, long way away.

I'm sorry I insulted you with my post. You're right Obama and Biden need to keep hammering on the issues to get to people. Obama/Biden might win the election this year on that alone. But that's assuming Americans haven't changed from eight years ago, and I have suspicions that not a lot has changed in how voters react to Republicans deception.

Anyway, did you look at the video? Obama was floundering in his response, I thought, and brought needlessly how different he is, and appeared too defensive. If he brings it up, cCan't he bring it up in a positive way?

Republicans can't win on issues this year, so they will attack character. Thus Obama can not not respond to attacks on character, but he can't just be defensive on it. I think he has to be on the offense and expose the hypocrites.

My reference to the 36 million supporters already is that he has the liberal base locked up, so please please pick up the moral values mantel and attack the Republicans on their shortcomings. Don't be afraid that you'll lose liberal support, Sen. Obama, as long as how you attack or present yourself doesn't contradict progressive values.

The vote for FISA was a contradiction and lost my support for a while, but I'm willing to overlook that, while keeping on bringing it up, in hope that the Constitution will be restored.

I saw the speech and afterward the MSM making excuses for McCain, and people were even grading the speech an A.

If McCain's speech was an A by one pundit, what was Obama's? Hmmm, I would say 36 million times A.

McCain says he's country first, says he doesn't want to talk about his veteran status, etc. etc. etc. He's bullying the press.

It makes me very angry to see this double treatment up to this point, and then seeing Obama mocked by all those Republicans for community organizing, and for him having to defend his Americanness, and having to answer all sorts of questions on the media, but McCain / Palin gets free passes.

Sorry, I got disheartened today, and wanted to shoutout.

Though it's not the fear of losing that's the motivating factor, I do have a sense that we might lose this election, that McCain/Palin might pull a fast one on Americans again.

Actually its anger that's driving me, that there's many things wrong in this country, and the Republicans that are supporting McCain/Palin, and I say that because not all Republicans are bad people, but the ones supporting the other ticket are making this election a big joke, and they're trying to put two clowns into the top office, except they're not cute or funny, but from a Stephen King novel

OK, I'll go and try to find some peace now.

I think that I just saw on MSNBC that 90% of repubs feel more confident with McIck after his VP selection.

Wonder if her experience is irritating to him now. He has been in Congress for 20 something years and someone comes and yells mean things and makes his base feel more confident in him.

What republicans? You must mean conservative Repubs? I know a lot of moderate repubs that think she's nuts, and McCain is even more nuts for choosing her. Actually there have been many moderate repubs on BO's site supporting him. Hard to believe that 90% (almost 100%) are buying into it. There is more than 10% of repubs that have a brain!

Over the past few days, I have been posting to ask that those who are this blog please consider stepping outside of their comfort zone to help with voter registration.

I have friends and family who are working on this campaign and what I have consistently heard from them over the past two weeks is that the campaign needs our help with registering new voters in swing states particularly. Please consider dedicating ONE DAY over the next 4 weeks to voter registration.

Please, please understand the urgency of this situation. I am spending 4 Saturdays in a row in Swing states near Illinois to register voters. There is NOTHING more important for us to do than that at this time except for DONATING money.

I would like to ask those of you living in the following states or CLOSE to the following states, to please devote ONE WEEKEND over the next four weeks to voter registration:

2. Pennsylvania
3. Ohio
4. Nevada
5. New Mexico

Please, please, please help the campaign register voters in these states in PARTICULAR. We need a lot of help there.

Mariame, I went to our Montgomery county (Maryland) meeting last night. One our Senators told us the most important thing we can do for this campaign is register new voters. I will be driving to Virginia on weekends to turn it BLUE . We can do this.

I am unfortunately not at liberty to share non-public campaign information on this site but I just want people to fully understand what the need is at this moment.

I know that a lot of supporters are focused on the sensationalism of the Sarah Palin stuff, yet all of that focus obscures a very serious issue. The election is 60 days away and many states have voter registration deadlines of October 4th.

I have been asked by people working in the Campaign to please, please, get the message out here about VOTER REGISTRATION. We need a lot of help.

Hi, I'm not in either of the listed states, but agree with you that voter registration is of primary importance. I have been out every morning this week registering voters in front of a busy post office. It has proved very fruitful. Last week I tried it in front of the mall (on Friday, the day after Obama's energizing speech) and got a good number, but even though I was dressed well and discreet, mall security kicked me out. In contrast, the postal employees are very friendly; one day two of them were outside hanging a banner and told me they were all voting for Obama. I wear my Obama shirts and pass out Obama pins to people who register or express support. In Florida the registration deadline for the general election is Oct. 5, and between now and then I will go out every weekday possible and register voters. I urge you all to devote yourselves to this tangible contribution to our campaign while there is still time. There are many, many people out there right now who keep meaning to register but haven't found the time. If we don't get out where they are, such as a place like the post office where they are running everyday errands on their lunch hour, we will miss out on including many, many potential voters, and they in turn will miss out on the opportunity to make this happen!

Talking 24/7 about Palin is what McSame wants us to do so people will not be able to focus on how weak he and his policies are, not to mention his running mate. People will be talking about the soap opera and this election will be reduced to "little things" like pregnancies,fishing,and gutting moose instead of our economy,medical insurance, protecting the Constitution, womens rights and equal pay, snd education just to name a few. Stop responding to the bait and register, donate, volunteer, and drive people to the polls and encourage people to vote early so there are fewer people waiting in long lines to vote. We don't want anyone not to have enough time to vote because they have to work, or have no transportation, or there is bad weather, personal emergency, or just long lines to discourage anyone. Also, if folks haven't voted in a while go now and check your status so there are no suprises and disapointment on election day.

Can someone, anyone please explain campaign finance to me?? I've read about it and it completely confuses me. How is it that McCain has $200 million to spend between now and November? How is McCain raising more money now than Hillary did in the primaries? This is one area that completely stumps me. If McCain isn't drawing the crowds Barack is drawing, how can he be raising as much money as Barack?

Any help on this subject would be appreciated.

But the RNC isn't spending all of its money on McCain. There are other candidates running for office, and they will need some of that money. So it is not as if McCain is getting $200 million all to himself and the other Republican candidates are on their own.

McCain gets 84M$ of Federal funds...the RNC is allowed to donate another $19M...

Technically the McCain campaign is only allowed to spend $103M from Sept. 1st to Nov. 4th....plus a few more million they were allowed to carry over for legal expenses to stay in compliance....

However they are raising money for the RNC, trying to get donors to donate $76,000 which is the max they can between the diff categories..

$28,500 to the RNC
$34,000 to the REP party of four swing states.
$14,000 to to some other groups....

The Obama campaign says it needs $250M for the 50-state strategy...I think they will have $375M very easily...we have the volunteer base, we just need more offices...

With $375M we can probably have more than double the offices......

BTW - Please PUSH the campaign to have a more viral way to invite family and friends to register than this voteforchange.com site....They need an application on Facebook where with one click it sends it to all your friends they can register through it or mark registered...

Rockthevote has this on Facebook but there's is a hassle and they aren't marketing it...

I thought that he had to spend all of the money he got in the primary campaign by yesterday and that now all he has to spend is the public financing money. I thought that was around $84 million...If he has $200 million, that's news to me. I do know that here in Missouri we are being inundated with McCain ads. I thought that was because he needed to use up his primary money.

Then my suggestion is to (and I will say this kindly) stop whining and get out and work for Obama. There is plenty you can do, if you want us to win in November.

You can phonebank. You can canvass. You can help register voters. It will make you feel good once you get among other dedicated, hard-working supporters.

Trust the campaign. It knows what it is doing, and so does Hillary. She's a smart lady who has been in politics a lot longer than Ms. Palin and, I trust, longer than us.

And you should know by now not to put stock in anything Hannity says. I mean, come on, now.

On one hand if we comment on Palin it gives her too much power and takes focus away from the issues. On the other if we do go after her we will be perceived as weak by being nice and it still gives her power. The Democrats have lost elections by taking the high road and playing nice.

Several members of the local and national press were arrested and detained during the RNC protests this week here in St. Paul.

This was an orchestrated effort to prevent coverage of the protests. In other words, to prevent the people of the country from seeing that tens of thousands of people are angry and willing to stand up.

Make no mistake about it people, our rights are being threatened every day. We are like the proverbial frog in the pot of boiling water. If we don't do something soon, we are cooked, if not already.

I am a 50 year old woman who works in public school as a teacher assistant and speech therapy assistant. I was fortunate to be able to stay home to raise my four children and though my husband and I struggled to make ends meet, it was a priority and we sacrificed to make it happen. (My first car was a blue Malibu station wagon that I paid $200 for...elitist???) I have been pursuing my bachelor's degree and teacher certification while working, but I have decided to put my DEGREE on HOLD to volunteer for OBAMA! NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT TO ME THAN THIS ELECTION!

I gave my children my time and energy and my love and prayers and they have been my greatest joy. I will NOT surrender my hopes and dreams for my children, nor any of the children I work with every day, to a narrow and negative, fearful and dangerous, manipulative and lying McCain and Palin. No. Never. I've worked too hard, sacrificed too much, and hoped too long. Obama and Biden...Yes we can and YES WE MUST!

You are my HERO!!! I cannot say enough about you. I am so inspired!!!

I am a working mother who has a full time, is completing my requirements on a doctoral degree, and also volunteers with an anti-violence organization in my community.

I too have been recommitted to FIGHTING TO TAKE THIS COUNTRY BACK!!! I am spending my time writing to media outlets holding them accountable, I am devoting weekends to voter registration, I am making financial contributions...

NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THIS ELECTION to my children's future. I truly believe this.

I am considering taking a month off in October and volunteering full-time for this campaign. It is THAT important to me to see that Democrats win this election. There is nothing more important.

JUNEAU, Alaska -- When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin sought to illustrate her frugality and flair to delegates at the GOP convention Wednesday, she described how she disposed of a corporate jet acquired by her unpopular predecessor.

"That luxury jet was over the top," Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, said to loud cheers. "I put it on eBay."

Palin's statement implied the plane was sold through the online auction site revered for empowering millions of small entrepreneurs, and Palin's spokeswoman insisted Thursday that the transaction occurred. But the plane failed to sell on eBay.

Instead, the 23-year-old 10-seat Westwind II was sold in August 2007 for $2.1 million to a Valdez, Alaska, entrepreneur; that's about $300,000 less than a broker's asking price, according to news accounts.

Also, while Palin characterized the plane as an extravagance of former Gov. Frank Murkowski, who arranged for its purchase in November 2005, the plane saw heavy use transporting Alaskan convicts.

Alaska does not have adequate prison capacity and contracts for space with a private facility near Phoenix. On Thursday, 24 percent of the 4,546 Alaskans in jail or in prison were serving their time at Arizona's Red Rock Correctional Center, said a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Corrections.

When the state first began using the plane in November 2005, prisoner transport accounted for 58 percent of the jet's use, and Murkowski's office used it 23 percent of the time. Over time, Murkowski's usage increased.

Today, the U.S. Marshals Service transports 90 percent of Alaska prisoners to Arizona.

The last U.S. Marshal flights to and from Arizona transported 145 prisoners at a cost of $127,000, or about $875 per prisoner. That's cheaper than the jet, whose per-prisoner cost averaged $1,674.

There is a case to be made for jet travel in a state as vast as Alaska. But the acquisition of the plane by Murkowski helped seal a perception of him as out of touch and added ammunition to Palin's campaign as a reformer. The jet become an issue in their 2006 primary race.

Isn't it amazing that the party that claims to be conservative has the most skeletons in the closet when it comes to family issues. Here are some examples:
George HW Bush: A son who has an aclohol problem He is a Republican and a supposed "conservative."
Bill Clinton: Daughter Chelsea Clinton was at the center of media attention and did not party, did not get pregnant and went to Stanford. A Democrat family that is supposedly liberal and more free.
George W Bush: His two twin daughters Jenna and Barbara get arrested for drunkenness before they even turned 21. What happened to obeying the rules. Again a Republican conservative.
Now we have Governor Sarah Palin and her daughter. I know that Barack asserts that families are off limits which I understand, but she preaches abstinence training and does not believe in birth control or condoms. Being so stringent didn't work now did it??? She became pregnant at 17.
Why is it that the Republicans who think they are the gift from God and preach conservatism can't seem to keep that mantra in the family?? It reminds me of the show from Great Britian "Keeping Up Appearances." Trying so hard to be one thing when they act like something completely different.

I was surprised to hear Barack state on Bill O’Reily’s show, “the surge worked beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.” This is a mistake. If the invasion of Iraq were carried out using the appropriate number of troops from the beginning, the need for a surge would not have been necessary.

In a New York Times article dated Feb 28, 2003, Eric Schmitt outlines Army Chief of Staff General Eric Shinseki’s estimate that several hundred thousand troops would be needed to secure post war Iraq. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz criticized General Shinseki, and called his estimate wildly “off- the- mark.” The reason Gen. Shinseki was “shouted down” is that the Bush administration wanted to hide the cost of the Iraq war from Congress until after the war had begun. The Bush administration won. The war begun with too few troops, continued with too few troops, so that created the need for a “surge” (bringing troop levels closer to the general’s estimate). This "surge" masked the initial blunder of not taking the advice of the Army Chief of Staff.

I hope that the campaign “cleans up” Barack’s mistake, or at least puts the following information out there.

I liked that Barack spoke about his policies today. Well done!! He can ignore the bashing to an extent, then respond with his policies.

If someone cuts your arm, sure a bandaid will help, but it doesn't remove the wound nor does it excuse the person who cut you.

Well it's not an easy road when your talking about Military Action. I have been out for a couple years now but when i was in everyone was always so careful to speak to the policies that have not worked but at the same time make sure to hold the troops actions in hi regard. The question i would like to have the McCain/Palin team answer is when are they going to be willing to have a true end to the American Revolution, we fought a war against the British to have our own country and to express the freedoms we choose to deem to be right and true. Then we had to fight another war against our own neighbors in the Civil War because we were not all free. That only lasted about a 100 years and then we, thanks to a Great Preacher from the south decided that all were not free and fought another war inside our country and inside our families. Now after that was done a few more years past and we again realized that we still were not all free because women were not able to vote. Now that fight didn't take a war but it was a fight none the less. Now we are at the year 2008 and we are again fighting because we believe that some people can't love who they choose to love. Democrats were the ones that made all of that happen mostly over the fight of the republicans. So i agree with what Sen. Obama says when he stated they don't get it but i am wondering if they ever will. These people don't care about families they care about winning and yes our side does too but what i believe we want more is to be right.

The general election has begun. On a random Thursday night, when most political junkies were watching POW McCain's cottage cheese and lime Jello speech at the RNC convention, in a town notoriously hard to get anywhere in on time, 2,000 people showed up at the opening of Barack Obama's first campaign office in Southern California.

There were a couple speeches from locals (Eric Garcetti, Harb Wesson, Mark Ridley-Thomas, and a couple others) at the beginning, and they handed out a few yard signs and bumper stickers, but basically, this was an office opening. Just a walk-through of the building. And the campaign sent only one email out about it, with just 24 hours advance notice.

Two thousand people.

Tomorrow I canvass, but today I wrote several letters to local and national editors, demanding that the press do their job in finding out who Sarah Palin is. Knowing what is true and what is lies is important since we know so little about her. Kept the letters about the issues only!

Please write your newspapers. Tonight, it was just reported that Sarah "barracuda" lied about a story she told during her speech. The jet sold on ebay, at a profit, was never sold on ebay. And it was sold (possibly one of her donors) at a LOSS to the state of Alaska.

So keep your eye on the ball donate, canvass, call, etc... But we must demand

"Who is Sarah Palin?"

When I told a friend, who was undecided, that she was for teaching creationism in public schools, and against abortion EVEN in the case of rape and incest. My friend made up her mind right there to vote for Obama.

Sara Palin is relevent as long as we stay away from her family and the "gossipy" stuff. We must eat away at her credibility, and then soon her speec will slowly be forgotten.

Already, the press is asking out loud, "why is she being kept away from the press?" We must through letters keep hammering our press to be the watch dog the "founding fathers" wanted when they wrote the constitution and said gave them "freedom of the press" This was intended to save our democracy from the Karl Rove style politics that exist today.

So, stand up and say WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW WHO SAHRA PALIN IS!

i just hate it when these people go on national TV and flat out LIE to the audience they're speaking to.

i really feel that it's the responsibility of the press to point out and describe how many factual errors there were in it, immediately afterward, so that the 38 million people watching know they were just lied to on countless occasions.

I've been watching the action on CNN. It is hard to watch when McCain says whatever he wants whether or not the information is true, his broad statements which try to say he will do something without any specifics, Palin trudges along the first time she has gotten to see so much of the country. What is wrong with this country when there exists a man who runs his campaign as Bush did, and the only reason we are suppose to elect him is because he stood firm while a POW. This will naturally conclude that this is a firm basis for him to be president especially since if he is so concerned with the US that his running mate has no foreign experience when it is needed the most. Just to please the evangelical voters. Why is it that this man should be a tough competitor, really?! I do not know why it is not simple to see the length and the breadth of a man. That more than economy we need to fix the environment, how do they believe that he will if for 26 years he has not taken the opportunity. Obama, not sure if you read these comments but I do hope that my vote for you this November will bring about the change we need though it is a tall order, I respect the decision for Biden for vice president, and I hope that you kick McCain' @ss in the debates.

You're post is kinda funny (I get your point, though).
I remember hearing on a News program that he plays with his wedding ring when he's really nervous. I first noticed him doing that after he won his Primary and Bush endorsed him (when they were standing in front of the White House).

Why should Oprah have to interview her?

I think Oprah wants to stay out of politics for now...she got enough flack from her viewers from endorsing Obama instead of Hillary....

She doesn't want to take sides, however if Palin wins or doesn't win either way she isn't taking sides as the race is over....

I am guessing Palin might be the GOP frontrunner in 4 years....

I can't see her losing Iowa....If she can get 50%, even 40% of the women's vote she really won't need much of the men's vote to win.....

She appeals to women and the very conservative and family values people....plus she is energetic good with the media....

Who else can they run in 4 years....Palin? Romney? Sanford?

I don't want to see Palin intereviewed by Oprah...I want to see her interviewed by someone like Charlie Rose, a serious journalist that is going to push her to answer the tough questions...

No matter how uncomfortable, step by step, I assert my support for basic humanity.

These may just be my steps, but they impact the world like a pebble in a pond - exponentially.

Tomorrow and one weekend day every weekend until Obama/Biden are in office, I will get on my cell phone and exercise my cold call sales skills.

I will continue to donate what I can afford. I talk to people at the grocery stores when I am waiting in line. I talk to people at work. I talk to people at gas stations. I talk to strangers.

Things are never what they seem to be. When delivered from a place of sincerity, the strongest "no" often becomes the biggest "yes" - sometimes generating multiple referrals.

Thank you Obama/Biden for "getting it." I am getting right on getting you elected!!!!!

You often don't even realize the impact you may be having. Last weekend I went out canvassing for Barack on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. One of the families I spoke with happened to have a daughter who is a school friend of my daughter, Claire. Sometime later, Claire told me that her friend said that I had convinced her parents to vote for Barack! There is no way I would have ever known that if not for the fact that Claire happened to be a friend of their daughter.

There are plenty of donors here that are "maxed out"....there is a legal limit of 4600 that one can give to a campaign.......

....However, we are still allowed to give to the DNC....which ALSO promotes Obama.....

I'm sure there's a better place to post this. I'm sure I'm writing out of turn. I'm sure my thoughts don't count for anything (not even a penny), but I'm NOT SURE -- I'm not sure that Obama just doesn't give a damn about the people of this nation and the world.

So he'll get my vote, for sure. Look at the alternative(s). I'm sure y'all have!

And I am a "conservative"; I never supported nor voted for Bush (Sr. or Jr.). I just want the Federal aspect of government to stay "federal" and get out of the babysitting business.

Most of all, I want it to quit feeding the corporatist, fascist, socialist, and/or communist paradigm that is killing our children and our resolve. I take that back -- you can kill our children but you can never kill our resolve; we give that up easily enough.

So you can guess that "Liberal", "Conservative", "Republican", "Democrat", and "Independent" are terms that I hold in the same esteem as the family dog considers "American Idol". It sickens me to even identify myself as "Conservative" the same way it sickens me to have to declare my marital status.

They're just words, and they mean less with every passing generation.

Obama gets my vote anyway. Not because he's a Democrat. Not because he speaks the language of all the self-contradictory bullsh*t I learned in grade school about "American Values". Not because he's (so far) honest in his dealings (as opposed to you-know-who-and-his-socially- lecherous-vice-bride). Not because he picked Biden (a big plus, 'cuz ya gotta spread some jackass around -- plus, Biden's actually pretty cool, if a little dumb).

No, Obama gets my vote because he's the lesser of two charlatans. In fact, it's a much easier choice than it has ever been in my short life. One of my friends will vote for Obama because he'll take the guns away from the rednecks; another will vote McCain because Obama's... well, BLACK. I can get along with all types. In my own small patch of world experience, I can see where this is all going.

There's just one thing I wish Obama would do:

Let the protesters know that you see them. Let them know that you won't allow them to be herded like cattle. No matter what they're protesting, don't let them suffer these indignities without your own voice of protest. You know

Questions? Hmm...

I'm already eager to vote for Obama. Not an issue there. It has less to do with the punditry and televised claptrap than it has to do with the values I hold.

The thing that bothers me is one of impracticality and I know it. In the best of worlds, the best of Obama's campaigning, he would have taken the impractical but revolutionary turn regarding the people outside both the DNC circus and the RNC circus.

I was watching, but all I saw were speeches and rhetoric. In my opinion, Obama could have forgone the schedule and asked the attendees if they would step outside with him (security detail and all), and see what was happening.

I know it was a mess outside. I know it was a mess outside the opposition's grand theater. I don't personally think that chanting and holding placards is any kind of constructive activity. I think the people out there were (and are) posessed of just enough information to make them foolish. But they are not irrelevant, and they are not cattle.

Obama has gotten so far by taking risks and getting educated. But he is just another politician, and no one but Obama can convince me otherise.

The arguments I've heard from both camps do not interest me; they don't exist. I do understand that these are the noises of successful campaigning, and I'm not particularly resentful for them. There's nothing to talk about, if we're going to discuss Cindy's outfit, or McCain's houses or Michelle's newfound appreciation for the American ideal.

I'm not a nationalist, I'm a father. Obama has nothing to offer me, and I know it. There are no issues that inspire my vote for or against Obama.

I'm voting for Obama -- EAGERLY -- because he is not the lying, manipulative, insubstantial, and whining McCain. I am voting for Obama because he seems to undertand that politics has its place, and that some things are sacred. He understands that the Golden Rule isn't to be violated just because a CIC position is at stake.

If I ask, "why didn't Obama take his delegation outside to see what was happening?" I know the answer -- truncated for space.

Ron Paul has gotten really far being a kook. I figured maybe he opened the door for Obama to stand up for all the inspiring rhetoric in his books.

I'm listening to Jeff Farris, on NovaM Radio, (Randi Rhodes station) and he just reported that Sarah Palin was in a resturant in Alaska and the waitress heard her say, loudly, after Barack won the primary against Hillary, and she quotes, "So the Sambo beat the Bitch!" The waitress (I forgot what he said her name was) said that Palin didn't realize that anyone heard her. Arrrgggghhh!!

I could put my foot off in her ass!!!!

She and McSame cannot occupy the White House!!

"CEDARBURG, Wisconsin (CNN) – Sarah Palin took to her attack dog role with gusto on Friday morning, calling John McCain “the only great man in this race” and disparaging Barack Obama’s judgment on the troop surge in Iraq.

Reading off notes, Palin mocked Obama for telling Fox News on Thursday that the surge “has succeeded in ways that nobody anticipated.”

“I guess when you turn out to be profoundly wrong on a vital national security issue, maybe it’s comforting to pretend that everyone else was wrong too,” Palin said, adding that McCain was “the one leader who did predict success.”

The crowd cheered when Palin reprised a pithy line from her convention speech that mocked Obama's professional background.

Good observation. Biden should throw that comment back in Palin's face when he debates her: "So, according to you Senator Barrack Obama is nothing more than a community organizer. Is that your view of all United States Senators or just United States senators who happen to be black?"

I started a blog about 7 p.m. with the following theme, McCain admits Republicans lost America's trust. I'm not sure where it is though. It's 7:30 and I still don't see it posted.

I certainly hope the Obama Campaign doesn't fail to use McCain's own words in an add supporting Obama for president when McCain said in his convention speech,  “I fight to restore the pride and principles of our party. We were elected to change Washington, and we let Washington change us. We lost the trust of the American people when some Republicans gave in to the temptations of corruption.” & #823 2;I'd suggest the experts decide whether it would play better with just the first two sentences or all three. I looked for and found the quote by googling "transcript McCain Convention Speech." It begins a paragraph in the middle of page 4 of a 10 page transcript.  My vision for the add goes something like this. Even John McCain agrees that the Republicans have lost the trust of the American people by giving in to corruption. Then play the excerpt followed by a short excerpt from an Obama speech saying it is time for a change.

Listen, I really hope that this message actually get to Senator Obama-

I'm a supporter- Barrack had me at "skinny kid with a funny name" four years ago.......

I am not sure that I like what I heard on the campaign trail. The senator sounded very defensive to me and that makes me nervous.
The McCain campaign has dragged out their pitbull with lipstick to swing a lot of baseless, snarky, and sarcastic attacks on Obama. It's pathetic and I believe transparent.

HOWEVER- DON'T ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE PUT ON THE DEFENSIVE!!!!!!! From what I have seen Senator Obama, you are the one who can deliver sarcasm like a champ. Throw it back at her- please stop defending yourself and fight fire with fire. Snag that "barracuda" in your intellectual hook and skin her alive. As a woman, I not only give you permission, I think it's your feminist duty.

here's what really bothers me: is it fair for viewers to watch a speech filled with lies and factual errors, and then not be told about any of it by the media afterward?

how is that fair? the press knows that every republican's speech last week was filled with lie after lie. and they say it was all good, so that viewers think they're being told the truth.

and could democrats get away with this to the same extent?
print media did more pushback, but if the tv news was going to be at all useful, they would devote their time to rebuking the factual errors that spilled from the mouths of people who hold no regard for the truth.

it pisses me off to no end.

I liked Hillary's response to the Palin speech. IMHO there's no way we're going to let the Repubs have the honor of the first female Pres or VP. I wasn't a supporter of Hillary's, but I am a Democrat! I'd like to see her run in 2016...if she's not already a Supreme Court Justice by then.

Well first your scenerio is confusing.
Second, you are presuming if they vote for McCain...then McCain automatically wins.
Third, Hillary Clinton is not running for President. That was over a while back.
Fourth, Why are we talking about this now? Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the Democratic Nominess.
Fifth, Palin offered no policy issues during her scripted speech. The only thing we know is that she does not care much for Barack Obama.
Last but most important.
Once these hypothetical women find out Palin's stance on Women's Issues along with a whole host of others. That are the polar opposite of Barack Obama's.
This scenerio will get real clear. JOHN MCCAIN WILL LOOSE.
STOP TALKING ABOUT PALIN.

I think Joe Biden does a better job at the moment!
A lot of analysts in Europe says that McCains speech should immediately be responsed by Obama if he wants to win.
Biden and Joe weren't clear enough yesterday and the day before yesterday and showed too much positive impression about Palin's speech. It wasn't sensible politically.

Actually, I think he's doing the right thing in showing that he's not going to take the repub bait by allowing Palin to be a distraction. It's about the top of the ticket. (Though the Repubs bottom of the ticket scares the heck out of me.) Joe is suppose to do the attacks. That's the role of VP while the Pres Nom. looks above the fray. I'm glad next week Hilar as well as a line of female governors are hitting the trail as well. The people you see at McCain's rally were voting for him anyway-they're just more excited to do so.

a very important minority of American people aren't able or don't have time to analyse things intellectually like you and me. They want to see a clever and clear response from the opponent .If the speech has or doesn't have a substance should be explained to people. What could he say about that speech. Seriously, it was 1/3 POW, 1/3 Change(which BO coined first, and 1/3 War. I think Barack is doing the right thing in focusing on the dismal economy. Opponent bashing should be left to the surrogates.

I didn't find any of BO comments defensive in the news conference in York. He was just responding to the questions of the frenzied media who'd like nothing more than a Barack/Palin smackdown. But as he said, it's about McCain and him. period. If a politician responded to every negative slur, he'd never get any work done. That's politics.

The women I know who like Palin, like her because she just like them and has cute kids. One woman, won't watch the debates because she knows she's a good mom and a tough woman, her policies don't matter,

To paraphrase Churchill, "the best argument against Democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter."

This has probably been said, and said eloquently, but it just came to me so clearly what a mockery John McDufus has made of the VP, and hence of the presidency as well. He thought it was enough to choose a woman. He did not consider that people might want a person who was highly educated and experienced in a serious way for the most important job on earth. He thought he would make a big joke and choose a woman who was neither. Obviously he wanted someone who would not be threatening to him. What an embarrassment for both of them.

I would like to once again appeal for focus on the blogs. I know that I am going to be slammed and called "blog police." I will claim that title if it makes anyone feel better.

I would just like to say that the campaign is not focused on Sarah Palin and I hope that we as supporters will move on too.

What's really needed right now is organizing and activism on the part of ALL supporters on this blog. I know that so many of you are already doing so much. Please consider registering voters. It is truly the most important thing that you can do to help in November.

WHY WHY WHY will the page no longer refresh? When I publish a comment, it RARELY shows up anymore, even if I hit refresh ten times. Obama and Biden need to call Sarah Palin out for not speaking personally to the media. I don't get it! I mean Biden's son is going to Iraq just like Palin son is but it's not stopping Biden from talking to the media. He's going to be on Meet the Press on Sunday.

The Republican has been dodging the question why Sarah isn't talking to the media, push her out there before she gets too scripted. American people need to know if she capable to be VP including president.

She needs to be called out! Put pressure on the Republican by doing a tv ad clocking the time she haven't or not willing to talk with the media.

They need to humanize Palin. She has NO substances. That hold speech she did on Wednesday basically bashed Obama but not once did she speak about the economy. Do another tv ad about her speech as a commentators asks: "What about the issues Sarah? What are you willing to bring to the table for the american people Sarah?"

Go after her! Don't rely so much on Hillary, it so much she can do or your surrogates. Show your strength. If she got the galls to bash Obama then she should be able take them from Biden. You guys are too smart to sit on the sidelines with this one, please go after Mrs Palin.

I actually think their decision to block the media will backfire. This approach will give the blogs, pundits, and the Obama campaign the opportunity to define her for the nation and cause doubt about her readiness to deal on the national stage. Thats funny because I think mental disabilities run in her family. Her son has down syndrome, her nephew has autism, and I can swear she has turets syndrome by what she blurted at the rnc. I guess being special makes her untouchable and we should be proud that she even know's how to use ebay let alone read and hide behind teleprompters. She is even using hooked on phonics presidents edition like bush before her if noticed the spelling new-clear. Maybe they aren't preaching change but more like chay+jeah. I just hope they make sure she has her saftey teleprompter reloaded with new material to read from rather then more of the same wasted words from the rnc she repeated in verbatim the next day. Maybe she can qualify by not attacking obama on writing laws when she can't even write a speech or spell nuclear.

I am so sick and tired of all the talking going on with all of the cable news channels about this election. I saw John King on CNN and his electoral map and ofcourse he has Barack loosing on his stupid map and I swear I wanted to break that map of his because the last time I checked the media DOES NOT determine who wins the Presidency. We the VOTERS do!!! Hello!! I'm not going to watch 1 more minute of cable news channels again! until after Barack is elected President of this country in 59 days!

It's ridiculous with all of their jibber jabber. I guess they have to fill there airwaves with something rather than nothing otherwise they won't get paid there salaries. I really can't stand anymore of that nonsense.

We all know that Barack's going to win this election, it's a no brainer. I have been praying and praying for this victory for 4 years.

Barack said the surge worked in slowing down the violence,that was successful. He also added that he would not say the surge was a success because it did not put the govt back in the Iraqis hands nor did it generate the withdrawl talks, which were also a part of executing the surge. So you tell me if the surge had three intentions, and only one was met, how can the surge be called a success???.

Don't you understand what happened last night? McCain humiliated his own party and himself to no good end. He excoriated the Republican Party and acted like he was holier than all of his fellow Republicans, as if no one would notice that he's hired Karl Rove's team to run his campaign - as if no one would notice that he's running a blatant swiftboating campaign against Barack.

He took his own party to task, and he's too self-important to see that people know that he is behaving the same way as all those other corrupt and destructive leaders in his party.

I drove up to PA from MD on Thursday 9-4 (My 31st b-day) w/ my 3 year old daughter. We were there from 1-7 & it was work every second, sweat, & tear.
