September 29, 2008. Alexandria, VA. 15 women. 2 hours. 300 Virginia travel postcards.
This was the first women-to-women postcard writing event I’ve hosted (and given the feedback, probably not the last—though time is of the essence for getting things into the mail). I heard about them during the primaries and was intrigued by the idea. I’ve sought out events to host that tap into those who are anxious to take action in support of Obama, but reluctant to try phonebanking and canvassing.
I have to say I was surprised, impressed, and delighted by the fact that this amazing group of women (I’d only met 4 of them before this event) poured their hearts out in support of Obama and completed all 300 postcards. Using pens & clipboards, provided by some who could not attend, they were intent on getting the job done--at times so intent, the only thing that could be heard was the “Yes We Can” CD playing in the background. I’m not sure some of them stopped writing log enough to get anything to eat or drink. We’re talking some goal-oriented women! We ended the evening with all the cards written, stamped and ready to be dropped off at the local Obama office for addressing and mailing to undecided women voters.
