someone asked on the last blog why we are bowing to the republicans in the house and senate; here's my answer
because the corporations own them. as long as they CAN, they WILL accept huge contributions from corporations, who have been granted status as PEOPLE in terms of WHETHER they can contribute, but are deemed to be ENTITIES when it comes to their donation limits. so THAT is why we see so much cowering. it has nothing to do with bowing to republicans, other than the corporations fully support keeping us down and them up, which has become the republican mantra because of the corporations taking over the republican party.
if we work for election finance reform laws, we would see a huge change in this. changecongress.org and publicampaign.org are working to get corporations back to being JUST huge entities, not quite so powerful. JOIN THEM!!! let congress know what you won't tolerate any more!

Someone posted how many corporation boards Senator Evan Bayh's wife sits on, having huge salaries...
She probably carries more influence than would a lobbyist!
I'd hope that in lieu of regular campaigning, which requires many miles of travel in aircraft at HUGE cost of pollution to environment, why not have CSPAN, PBS, and local Government-service-channels provide air time for debates?
Not HAVE big expensive conventions, etc.?
Could it be done in America?

I absolutely loved the webcast and how our president is reaching out to us on many fronts.
My frustration with the status quo, especially our conservadems, has reached new heights recently. To me it's a crime to get in the way of what we the people have so clearly called for.
I must have faith that what got our president to where he is today will be what drives us through and past the old and crusty thinking that has brought us to where we are today.
It is indeed a new era ... people need to wake up and get on board ... so call your representatives ... let them know ...
ENOUGH is enough
Get out of the way ... let our future vision become our present day reality.
Love you all :-)

Yes, He just keeps turning the tears on for me! Just cannot believe that he makes himself so available to us---as he promised of course--and as I believed.
Yet the REALITY that OUR BO is up there and cajoling us to keep at it and take responsibility to shape our country is beyond the greatest leadership we have Ever Had in this country. This is the world's smartest cookie ever to present himself up for leadership!
Thank you, thank you, and thank you ALL here for all that hard work in bringing about This Reality!

He does make himself available to us.
Isn't it strange how he's not doing anything more than just being real. He's being honest. And he's being a leader. He's not President for the trappings and the title. He's President to make our lives better. To help us keep trying to perfect our Union.
What's wrong with many of our other politicans that they can't do this. It's much harder being fake, than being real.

It IS indeed a watershed in that traditional media has had to cover an 'internet' event which frames up their increasing obsolescence.
For the MSM to become relevant they will need to add more value than dressing as clowns, presenting holograms and word clouds.
It will take actual 'journalism' and they will need to learn that from scratch.
thanks for pointing out that things are changing!

*crickets*
That's right folks NOTHING, but stay tuned for next week when they REALLY release their REAL plan.
Now for your enjoyment I will repost from last thread what one of these GOP budget planning meetings would look like:
Bohner: Come on guys, doesn't anyone have ANYTHING???
McConnell: Well I got out the old Bush budget and I think we should just go with it.
Bohner: Dammit Cantor turn that damned Brittany Spears crap off, we're trying to figure this out!
McCain: I say SPENDING FREEZE on everything but military spending.
Cantor: Who the hell invited McLame, I mean McCain?
Bohner: What do you think Mitch? Mitch??? Someone wake his ass up!
Cantor: How about we just attack like usual and have Michael Steele say some more dumb things and maybe they will all forget about our budget?
McConnell: Yeah distractions. I like it!
Bohner: Okay lets rap this up I got a tanning appointment in 20 minutes

Dear Friends.
The MSM predictably covered this incident as "Obama smacks Ed Henry." Having thus extracted their soundbite, they are now content to move on to the next drama. We must not let this die.
As intolerably nauseating as Ed Henry's tone and question were, I think we could have been content to let this ride after a day if only for one thing:
Ed Henry invoked President Obama's precious daughters as a prop. This is profane & just plain unacceptable. It's wrong, it is wrong. Certain lines should never be crossed & children should NOT be used as props to attack in any arena, publicly or privately. Not even in politics and particularly, not in the media.
Link
We have to absolutely insist on this. Obama's daughters are a symbol of America's precious daughters and children. We do not as a society tolerate ANY abuse of children. We should not allow a situation where Obama's daughters are randomly and loosely invoked & abused in millions of living rooms around the country & the world by a media hack.
While Obama could not have responded to this question without drawing even more undue attention to his kids, his uncharacteristicly sharp response was a parents final defense of his children. Think about it, they are just six & ten!
CNN & Ed Henry violated a sacred trust, which is even more damning as they are supposed to be the custodians of that very trust. They must apologize unconditionally to the Obama family & the country.
. Family & Children are OUT OF BOUNDS. No questions asked. OUT OF BOUNDS. Please write letters to editors & letters to popular bloggers etc.
Please help to get this out. Obama spends so much time working on behalf of the American people. His family is sacred
Thank you

GOP Budget Proposal: Tax cuts for the wealthy |

Mar 26th 2009 at 1:54 pm EDT (Updated Mar 26th 2009 at 1:54 pm EDT)
I was mad at MSNBC cutting away from the President to show Boehner, Cantor et al claiming that they are presenting their counter budget today. It turns out that the paper didn't have any details and is only tax cuts for the wealthy. Is anybody surprised? Here is an excerpt from the article.
Under the Republican plan, the top marginal tax rate would be slashed from 35 to 25 percent, facilitating a dramatic transfer of wealth up the economic scale. Anyone making more than a $100,000 would pay the top rate; those under would pay 10 percent.
Reporters -- mainstream, liberal and conservative -- greeted the Republican document with a collective scoff.
"Are you going to have any further details on this today?" the first asked.
"On what?" asked Boehner.
"There's no detail in here," noted the reporter.
Another reporter reminded Boehner that he has "criticized Democrats for throwing together a stimulus quickly and nobody knew what they were voting on. Are you saying that your budget will be unveiled on the same day that the House is expected to vote on it?"
"No, I expect it'll be out next week," he said, though the House is expected to vote on the budget next week. "But understand that a budget really is a one-page document. It's just a bunch of numbers."

What losers they are! The President once again plays chess while they continue to engage in a game of checkers. He knew that they couldn't really counter his budget with anything substantial that's why he called them out.

Didn't the republicans just lost the elections?
They had plenty of time the last 8 years to submit and execute their plans. They did. Their plans failed leaving huge holes in our economy, in our school system, in our Healthcare, in our international image. NO NO NO going back to failed plans. Just pure common sense. Right?

At least President Obama is trying to explain present conditions ...
... and that is so refreshing after 8 years of virtual secrecy and of you don't need to know basis eminating from the executive office of President Bush.
I'm glad Americans are honestly calling President Obama out on some issues and on some procedures that he is formulating. That's the best form of democracy in action. As for those calling him out just for their own personal (ie. network ratings, etc.) or political (ie. up for reelection, etc.) gain, well I ignore those particular Americans as not putting their country first and I don't find them to be honest in their criticism.
Yet, the more I see and hear from our current President, frankly the more personal confidence I get, that my own financial situtation will eventually get better, thanks to others around me eventually getting better with theirs.
I frankly never felt that before with a president, not even with a democrat as president, for example President Carter, who I felt was not able to get enough of a grasp on the economic situation in the country. He didn't inspire confidence in those issues, even though I admired him for other issues like human rights, etc.
As for President Clinton, he was too consumed with his own fidelity shenanigans, to really reform America. He went along to get along.
President Obama is very much in a 1.0 mode of trying to get the current structure in America to survive but ever so subtly, each day, he's segwaying more and more to Obama 2.0 -- education, energy and healthcare reform.
For so long, I have not trusted my own federal government and basically said "I'm on my own here" --like a lone wolf. I'm slowly learning, though, to trust that government and think that eventually the reasons to trust will start to trickle down to state, and then to local govt and even to my immediate neighbors -- where I can trust them, that I can think that "we are ALL in this together" -- that I can rely on them, if I need their help.

MSM - my theory |
Report to Admin
By
JD from Seal Beach, CA
Mar 26th 2009 at 2:16 pm EDT (Updated Mar 26th 2009 at 2:16 pm EDT)
Folks - I have a different theory about the MSMs opinion of the President.
They LOVE him.
Why?
RATINGS! Their ratings have never been higher. Every media event with the president boosts their ratings. Even this virtual web event was a big media event that all of them carried. Even Fixxed News.
Press conferences? Big ratings.
60 minutes w Obama? Big ratings.
Tonight Show w Obama? Big ratings.
Obama on the cover of any magazine? Big sales.
These are the facts. The media isn't stupid. They will continue to give the president all the coverage he wants because he is so good on air.
Even the Gibbs daily press briefings get more live coverage than any of Bush's press briefings.
Who would viewers rather watch (even if you are a republican)? Rick Santelli, Chuck Todd, Wolfe Blitzer, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Eric Canter, Judd Gregg?
Or Barack Obama?
Barack knows this and plays the media like a fiddle. Be thankful that there is so much media preoccupation with what the administration is doing. Even negative coverage is better than no coverage.
Every time we get Canter, Boehner, Gregg, Jindel, Doucheborogh on air they pale in comparison to Obama. The opposition has no one to counter the President. They look pathetic in comparison. That is why Obama's approval rating continue to stay high despite all of the attacks.
Bring 'em on!

Dear JD,
Please allow me, if I may, to respond with a counter proposition. This is not to say I am a better analyzer of human instincts, rather a view from 'accross the street' so to speak
Here goes:
They don't love Obama, - THEY LOVE TO HATE HIM
Filled with envy beyond all their ability to cover or conceal.
They are bewilderingly jealous of a man who is everything they like to think they are, who has neither sacrificed his principles or sold his soul, as they have! They are miffed that he is not only adored but loved! They hate that he has bypassed & surpassed them in everything. They can't stand that he upends all their 'authorative' projections.
Compounding all this is Obama's complete ease, charisma and grace, which is a painful reminder of their own insecurities and the egos they use to cover them.
Their disdain comes so easily because it is do deeply engrained to the point that it has become instinctive.
Lou Dobbs tried to mask & cover it during the campaign, but he could not. Now he has finally come unhinged & just froths at the mouth spewing his toxic hate-filled poison every night.
The rest are not far behind.
Remember
Charles 'Gotcha' Gibson
George the 'Weasel' Stephanococas
Matt "gimme your super secret blackberry" Lauer
Joe 'let me in the oval office Scarborough
Campbell 'bull & biased' Brown
John 'I like Cheney' King (cnn)
Ed 'the hack' Henry (CNN)
Chuck 'the parasite' Todd
Jake 'the eeww' Tapper
Chip "the ripper" Reid
Wolf 'the wolf' Blitzer
Hannity Eeew....
Billy 'the Bully' Orally
Mika 'the cheerleader' Brizzzbdbabdsky
Willie 'the toad' Geist
Anderson 'the conceited drunk' Cooper
Dan 'Obama is Osama' Rather
Tom 'Obama has no chance' Brokauw
Steve 'Punch Drunk' Kroft
They really resent that he is the biggest public attraction out there. Interviews with him garner ratings & dollars for them. Instead of being grateful, their envy compels them to try everything to humiliate and belittle him in the process.
Ah Barack Obama, Our dear President, How your candle burns from both ends

I think you miss the fundamental motivator and precept that any news organization operates under - the core of their business is to reveal and highlight conflict. Any news manager will demand that of their workers. Where's the conflict?
This is the mode that MSM operated under with Bush. They were not kind with him either. Name a politician who is exempt from the kind of scrutiny that Obama is getting.
Look at the reality shows. Where conflict doesn't exist it is manufactured to create ratings. The freakier the contestents the better. No one realy thinks people live and conduct themselves this way normally.
News media needs to find the exception, the conflict, the freak show. Politicial news is no different. Octomom, Palin's daughters baby, Senator caught in airport restrooms, Corrupt governor of Illinois. Obama laughing on 60 minutes. Easy soundbites that can fit a 2 minute break in between car chases and natural disasters.
He knows that this is the nature of the news business. He has developed his whole public strategy around managing his message and "using" the media to get his message out there. He did it masterfully during his campaign and continues to be the champion of message management.
The personalities you mentioned are interchangeable. They come and go. The owners of the media are most interested in ratings - and ratings come from conflict.

They're most interested in making money. The ratings are the driving force for their revenue. The revenue they generate comes from corporations that have goals that are the opposite of what Democratic goals are. Wal-Mart is a case in point with the Employee Free Choice Act. They threatened their employees with job loss if they voted for Barack Obama.
As far as covering snafoos(spelling?);what campaign controversy from the Republican side did the media cover with nearly the mania they covered the Rev Wright story? I'm sorry, but ratings are not an excuse to manipulate public opinion. They characterized Rev Wright as a danger, but is was just his style of preaching.

He came to President Obama and asked for the Commerce job.

Tell Congress to Pass a Strong Climate Bill
"Targeting: members of the US Senate and members of the US House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists
Congress just passed a stimulus package that includes strong provisions promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency-an important down payment on our country's transition to a cleaner energy future.
But the science is clear and it's urgent: to prevent the worst effects of global warming, Congress must go further, and it must act now. Comprehensive climate policy can curb global warming while breaking our dependence on oil and putting Americans back to work.
Tell your representative and senators to make passage of a strong climate bill a top priority today."

It is a potential scandal for the press, something they can use against the President, because they could reach back further into his past and try to bring up his marijuana use. Remember, they're working for the RW, trying to bring down the President in anyway they can, and if they can possibly make him look like a hypocrite on drugs, they'll do it. WASHINGTON --
"Democrats on Senate Budget Committee defeated a Republican attempt Thursday to reduce recommended spending across hundreds of programs over next five years as they moved toward approval of a blueprint that preserves President Barack Obama's top priorities.
Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., chairman of committee, said it (Republican attempt) went too far, adding budget he prepared already provides for less spending than the president wants.
The vote was a party-line 13-10.
A final vote on budget was expected later today, hours after a House panel approved a similar version on a party-line vote."

Guys Healthcare is supposed to bankrupt this country if we do nothing about it. It has to pass NOW. Screw senate republicans. They have already shown how very petty they are and how unwilling they are to compromise (i.e. stimulus).
The democratic leadership needs to use reconciliation for both the budget and healthcare to allow for only a simple majority to pass these items. With reconciliation the budget is no problem but it creates a problem with health care 5 yrs down the road because that is only how long such bills last. I say its worth it because once the American People become accustomed to a new health care system it will become easier to pass a permanent health care bill 5 yrs down the road.

"Nurses Blast "Cruel Ruse" by Insurance Giants to Cover Patients As Deal for Forcing Americans to Buy Insurance"
The nation's largest organization of registered nurses today condemned the conditional offer by the insurance industry to stop denying coverage to sick people in exchange for a massive government bailout.
On Tuesday, the insurance trade lobby America's Health Insurance Plans and Blue Cross and Blue Shield offered to stop denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions - but only if the healthcare reform plan under consideration in Congress contains a requirement forcing all Americans to buy private insurance - and if Congress rejects a proposal to include a public plan alternative for people not wanting private insurance.
"That's not a sign of flexibility at all, it's blackmail," said Geri Jenkins, RN, co-president of the 85,000-member California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee.
"They are only willing to scale back on their immoral denial of coverage for people who are sick, even those who have had minor illnesses, if they are given billions of dollars in payments from private individuals and government subsidies," said Jenkins."

Clean energy is growing here in Arizona. A 280kW parabolic mirror solar electrical power plant will come on line in 2011. It is being built west of Gila Bend, Arizona. This will supply enough electricity for 70,000 homes at PEAK!
Plans for another one are underway north of Kingman, in northwest Arizona (Mohave Desert area).
I have worked with two clients doing the archaeological compliance for these projects as the permitting process requires dealing with archaeological sites. I spoke with the permitting agency here in Arizona (The Arizona Corporation Commission) and he told me "to get ready for a huge plug of work as there are 10-12 applications sitting on his desk".
Anyway...thought some of you would be interested in this.

I assume this is resulting from the stimulus money. If so that's great. Actually it is great even if it is not from the stimulus money. :)

It is. The Dept. of Energy would be the backer on the loan.

The Treasury Department unveiled proposed legislation Wednesday that would give it broad powers to shut down big financial institutions, the opening act to overhaul regulation of the nation's troubled financial system and a move that could pave the way for nationalizing banks.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will ask Congress on Thursday to give him powers similar to those that allow the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to seize smaller banks.

I am listening to the Town Hall on-line meeting (I missed it this morning).
I like the three young woman who asked President Obama about service to country in exchange for student aid. As a former Peace Corps volunteer (Panama 1999-2001) this means a lot to me. My service defined a large part of what I am, and gave me the skills and confidence to do so much.
Back when I was in the Peace Corps I went in with a $5,000 student loan balance. When I came out it had grown to $6,000 (they had suspended my payments for 27 months, but not the 8.25% interest rate)!
Boy, was I suprised...
