I though he was great. Talking about investments in the city; housing our hospitals and such. But what made me chuckle when he said something about a three lagged stool.
I 'm like wah?
He laid into the critics; I'm very glad.
And at the end he closed out in saying be patient. It took 8 years to get into this mess you can demand us but be patient.

Nothing will ever change as long as the members of Congress are allowed to recieve millions from the very companies and persons we are trying to eliminate,I'm so tired of all the beating around the bush, Why can we just say it? The people in power are getting fat for opposing health care.So enough of this non-sense,Until we act against these liars and theives we are doomed to remain helpless and un-cared for,Money is doing the talking,Only fools would dis-agree,Even members of the left and the President himself are in so deep with the Health Care Industry you can be sure even with so called reform, pockets will continue to be lined.
scaled 'fee' for healthcare is improperly structured |

We are getting there in terms of how to put incentives in place that level the playing field so companies that choose not to provide health coverage don't have an unfair advantage over those that do.
This article
Link
is wide ranging, but mentions a fee to encourage coverage:
------
In addition, key lawmakers are expected to call for a tax or fee equal to a percentage of a worker's salary on employers who do not offer health benefits.
------
However, as described above, the incentive is 'inverted'. It should be scaled down as the worker's salary goes up. The idea is to cover the subsidy that the government would provide lower wage earners and it's not a bad idea to encourage higher salaries, not lower ones.
There may simply be a misunderstanding on the 'sliding scale' (I hope so), yet we should make sure any 'fee' is properly implemented. It is to our opponent's advantage that little 'gotchas' are in the legislation and the burden on us to reduce them.
I hope we see this addressed in some fashion soon.

Me, too! This is great information.
I find it very interesting that the trip began in Moscow, where the population wasn't very outwardly effusive about the Obamas either due to their own nature or because of the history of icy relations, and will end with a departure ceremony in Ghana where the outpouring will likely be tremendous. As they explained, since they are arriving at a very late hour, the traditional welcoming ceremony will not happen. So it will almost be more exciting to see what happens at the departure ceremony that will take its place. Can't wait to see that!

I'm watching the Senate Health Committee on CSPAN 3. Talk about the party of no. The repubs are denying most everything and what they offer as an alternative is hot air. There's nothing of substance at all.
They're voting on various amendments that the repubs ore offering, so far they've luckily been shot down.
This session is the mark-up of the bill that has to occur before it's presented to the floor. They're on a lunch break now and will reconvene at 1pm est.

On another note, FINRA ads on TV are a good idea to restore individual confidence. However, addressing the very troubling Goldman admission that their trading software can "manipulate the in unfair ways" (their words, not mine)", among other notable SEC failures more than outweights and generic ads about how FINRA is protecting individual investors.
The industry surely knows that statements such as software that manipulates the market, or pushing spun rumors that Public plan option may not be pursued presents downward pressure on the market and adds to the 'fear' of individual investors. To do so after an approximate 30% run up recently only ads to speculation that the industry knows exactly what they are doing in driving down the market a second time; namely that they will pocket the 30% runup (often much more), drive the market down by scaring investors anyway they can, and then buy the same positions back at a lower price (and perhaps hold for a slightly longer period this time).
The FINRA ads are also telling. Obviously putting resources to bolster investor confidence by TV ads does nothing for 'enforcement' of regulations, and compared to the industry 'short' position is not likely to be significcant.
Far better to spend those same resources addressing the Goldman Sachs admission that their software 'manipulates the market in unfair ways" (let me be clear, Goldman Sachs contends their stolen software can manipulate the market in unfair ways.. so it's no stretch that probable cause exists to believe Goldman has used it to do so in the past - possibly present).
FINRA ads on TV won't restore individual investor confidence.

Annette -
We've collected petition signatures, written letters to the editor, held town halls and more in an effort to educate Americans on the necessity of passing real healthcare reform. And it's working -- 76 percent of Americans now say they support the choice of a public health insurance option.
There's still work to be done.
We must keep the pressure on Congress and those in Washington who oppose real change. We must keep up our efforts to get our message out to all Americans with letters to the editor and neighborhood canvasses. And I will continue to speak out in my nationwide tour of town halls, targeted rallies, and T.V. appearances.
In fact, I hope you can join me at one of my next big events. I'll be hosting a town-hall style keynote session at the Netroots Nation Convention in Pittsburgh on Friday, August 14. If you can make it to Pittsburgh, this is a convention you don't want to miss.
REGISTER NOW FOR NETROOTS NATION USE PROMO CODE "DFA" FOR $50 DISCOUNT
This town hall style keynote won't be a one way conversation. I'll be answering your questions, as well as answering questions submitted in advance online. We'll chat about obstacles and next steps. Who the leaders fighting for a public option really are and who aren't. And what's next in the Stand with Dr. Dean Campaign.
I've spoken at Netroots Nation conventions before, but this is the first time we've been able to make it interactive and conversational. You know I don't pull any punches. I'm looking forward to speaking honestly with you about how to pass meaningful reform that makes sure everyone in America can get the heatlhcare they need.
The keynote will be held Friday morning at 9 a.m. If you haven't already registered, click here to sign up.
I hope you can join me in Pittsburgh.
Thank you for everything you do,

Nancy Pelosi is live on CSPAN3 giving her weekly presser. She just said that the House will vote on the healthcare reform bill with an option. The only thing that is in question is what the option will be called; public or patient. She said anybody's welcome to submit what they want to call it, but it will provide a strong option for people to choose and will provide governmental competition with private insurance companies.

Jul 9th 2009 at 12:03 pm EDT (Updated Jul 9th 2009 at 12:03 pm EDT)
As the President's advisor on Homeland Security, I am passing along the following message from Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security, and Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education, who are leading the efforts to prepare our Nation for the coming flu season.
Fellow Americans,
This spring we were confronted with an outbreak of a troubling flu virus called 2009-H1N1. As the fall flu season approaches, it is critical that we reinvigorate our preparedness efforts across the country in order to mitigate the effects of this virus on our communities.
Today, we are holding an H1N1 Influenza Preparedness Summit in conjunction with the White House to discuss our Nation's preparedness. We are working together to monitor the spread of 2009-H1N1 and to prepare to initiate a voluntary fall vaccination program against the 2009-H1N1 flu virus, assuming we have a safe vaccine and do not see changes in the virus that would render the vaccine ineffective.
But the most critical steps to mitigating the effects of 2009-H1N1 won't take place in Washington -- they will take place in your homes, schools and community businesses.
Taking precautions for this fall's flu season is a responsibility we all share. Visit Flu.gov to make sure you are ready and learn how you can help promote public awareness.
We are making every effort to have a safe and effective vaccine available for distribution as soon as possible, but our current estimate is that it won't be ready before mid-October. This makes individual prevention even more critical. Wash your hands regularly. Take the necessary precautions to stay healthy and if you do get sick, stay home from work or school.
We are doing everything possible to prepare for the fall flu season and encourage all Americans to do the same -- this is a shared responsibility and now is the time to prepare. Please visit Flu.gov to learn what steps you can take to prepare and do your part to mitigate the effects of H1N1.
Take Care,
Kathleen, Janet and Arne

Howard Dean Liveblog: His Prescription for Real Healthcare Reform
by mcjoan
Thu Jul 09, 2009 at 08:56:03 AM PDT
Gov. Howard Dean has a new rallying cry: "You have the choice" when it comes to healthcare reform, or you will, if a healthcare reform plan goes through with a strong public option, and he lays it out in his new book, Howard Dean's Prescription for Real Healthcare Reform.
Link
In fact, Governor Dean says:
The bottom line on healthcare reform is that it is not worth doing if it is not done right....
Subsidizing Americans to buy private health insurance without giving them the choice of a more rational and less expensive system is simply pouring money into a system that increases costs at twice the rate of inflation, serves preferentially those who don't need help, and offers not peace of mind to those at risk in difficult economic times.
In short, the healthcare refrom bill is not worth passing unless the American people have the choice of signing up for a public option--a real public option....

Implementing healthcare reform poorly is worse than doing nothing for several reasons - mainly that we won't get another shot at it politically(will create a negative bias to further change if our last change 'messed up' what does work), and won't have the money.
We should definately make sure we do it right, and that includes a very strong public option, cost savings, subsidies, and incentives.
Might take a bit longer than we want, but better we take longer than make a mistake with this.

Nancy Pelosi made it clear that the House version that she will bring to a vote before the August recess, will include a strong public or patient option with a governmental alternative to private insurance. There will be no triggers or anything that will prevent government competition with the private insurance sector. Her only question was what to call it.
Her presser should be up later on CSPAN 3.

Ortiz, I think you are a great advocate for our President and our causes. We need you. The media has become a toxic mess, thriving on hysteria, conflict and degradation rather than providing information that will inform and enlighten. For the most part, they harm rather than contribute. So I totally support turning it off and keeping it at a distance, especially if it's affecting your well-being.
We are having an effect on our Senators, one by one. We need to call them and let them know how important this issue is to us as individuals and families and to us as Americans. We need reform to keep our economy from total collapse and we need reform to keep families from despair and total collapse.

I will keep making calls to senators and make sure we get a strong public plan. The insults can keep coming, but what has Ed SchitS ever done for the president? THreats, Blackmails, that's all i hear from these people (left and right).
Back to the call, calm mind. We will overcome this!

Excerpt from:
Myth of Certainty: Obama, Liberals & Daily Kos
by AZDem
Thu Jul 09, 2009
…Certainty of those on Right made serious dialogue impossible and made good decision making difficult.
On January 20, 2009 that changed.
United States has a President who believes good decisions come from listening to all perspectives.
A President who understands that "certainty is wrong", no matter (which) side of the political spectrum practices it.
President Obama's favorite theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr, famously posited that:
"If you and I disagree, then at least one of us is wrong, and it may be me."
That's known to historians and political scientists as "Niebuhrian humility."
Niebuhrian humility is true liberalism.
We are very fortunate to be led by a President with Niebuhrian humility.
Conservatives may see humility as "apologizing for America," or as lack of conviction in American exceptionalism, but humility is what, ultimately, saves us.
Myth of certainty (and the absence of humility) plagues liberals as well.
We are seeing it in strong doses here at Daily Kos, and elsewhere in liberal blogs.
We are "certain WE are right" and President's openness to other approaches and other ideas is seen as a betrayal.
A survey of Daily Kos dairies finds a "plague of certainty".
President's failure to be as certain as we is "not change we can believe in," commenters say with regularity.
We liberals need a huge dose of Niebuhrian humility.
Process of governing is exceptionally important.
(Gene McCarthy used to say that process was more important than result; whether you believe that or not, the point is that without a process that recognizes POSSIBILITY that our side is wrong, no good result is likely).
Enacting or enforcing a list of liberal agenda items WITHOUT COUNTER ARGUMENT would not be change we can believe in, it would be an exercise in unfounded, prideful, certainty.
As Sen.Obama said during the election campaign:
Liberal objectives like withdrawing from Iraq, stopping AIDS, and working more closely with our allies are laudable, "but they hardly constitute a coherent national security policy."
Obama, Gospel and Verse
Let's celebrate that we have an administration deeply rooted not in NAIVE LIBERALISM or DOCTRINAIRE CONSERVATISM, but in an OPEN-MINDED, RATIONAL, REALISTIC APPROACH to GOVERNANCE.
That's true liberalism, and that's "Change we can Believe in.

From: Adam Green, Change Congress [mailto:change-congress@mail.d emocracyinaction.com]
Sent: Thursday, July 09, 2009 12:53 PM
To:
Subject: "Strangers approached me to shake my hand."
,
Last week, we asked you to help us air a TV ad in Louisiana featuring Karen Gadbois, a local New Orleans hero who called out Sen. Mary Landrieu for opposing a public health insurance option while taking millions from health and insurance interests.
We got this email from Karen and wanted to share it with you:
"I went to the Farmer's Market today. Strangers approached me to shake my hand. Young mothers, older folks, black, white -- people from all walks of life."
"They wanted to thank me for the recent commercial where I spoke out in favor of the public option and against special interests. I think together we gave many people a voice, and I can tell we're having an impact."
Thank you for being part of this impact.
Landrieu's opposition to the public option and her millions in special-interest money had been flying completely under the radar. But in the last few weeks, she's been bombarded with online ads, TV ads, phone calls, and tons of national and local media stories. She now knows the public is watching.
...
in the meantime, it's time to start planning our next target -- can you help?
Below are some senators we're considering.
...
Potential targets:
• Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA). He's taken over $2 million from health and insurance interests and opposes a public option. Last week, a constituent asked why he couldn't get insurance as good as the senator's...
• Sens. Olympia Snowe & Susan Collins (R-ME). They have taken over $2 million together from health and insurance interests ... and they have opposed the public option so far. Snowe consistently has advocated a "trigger" proposal that the insurance industry wants.
• Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT). He's the chair of a key Senate committee on the health care reform issue and has taken $3.9 million from health and insurance interests. He'd hinted that he may support a public option, but when his committee's draft plan came out, the Washington Post's Ezra Klein reported, "There's no public plan mentioned anywhere in the document."

...
• Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND). He's taken $2.1 million from health and insurance interests and has offered one of the main proposals to dilute the public option -- a local "co-op" plan. Insurers would prefer this to a strong federally backed head-to-head competitor with private insurance.
...
Thanks ...for helping to Change Congress.

Oh, and when you call, remember to ask them to support President Obama's three principles for real health care reform:
1. Reduce costs
2. Guarantee a choice of plans and doctors -- including the choice of a robust public insurance option
3. Ensure quality, affordable care for every American
Senator Boxers aide did ask me what I thought a public option plan should include.
Again, thanks everyone for your help.

The only answer I can come up with is status quo?
More of the same, nothing different
The Co-op thing:
With public option there can still be co-ops isn't that like a no brainer or am I missing something. could be an option within the public option.
Deficit neutral -
Isn't this true?
Medicare - isn't socialized medicince it's an insurance plan at the mercy of the system. Isn't that true? The system can dance around just about anything, increase costs all they want right?
Public Option would be a reformation of medicare...that's real reform isn't everyone on the same page with that one? even republicans (atleast those that have gotten past the two year old no mentality)
Those against public option
Are against health care reform
and
It seems against medicare all together trashing it as some sort of bloated wasteful govn't program
what's their option...to do away with it all together. Why don't they just come out and say it?

'that medicare needs some serious reform?'
++++
yep, it (ie. Medicare) does need reform ...
... and the reform will come in the form of having a healthier, a younger and a more expansive pool of members, if government insurance option is also extended to Americans below age 65.
'real change you can believe is' ...
... is called PUBLIC OPTION.

One would like to think they would be on the same page. It's so sad that our senators think more of the deep pockets of the insurance companies. Don't they understand they have to face us one way or the other for our VOTES? Keep up the pressure.

Healthcare Reform rallies by MoveOn.org members today July 9 :

Subject: Can you make it Thursday?
Dear MoveOn member,
While most Americans took time off to relax this holiday weekend, news broke that insurance companies and special interests have intensified their campaign to destroy health care reform.
They're now spending more than $1.4 million dollars a day1 to water down reform and kill President Obama's public health insurance option.
The only way we can compete with their money and influence is to show so much public support that Republicans and conservative Democrats know they can't negotiate the public option away behind closed doors.
That's why this Thursday, July 9, MoveOn members are holding health care rallies at local Senate offices across the country. These rallies are the best way to show that Americans across the country are demanding a strong public health insurance option.
...
A strong public option would:
• Save you money. The public health insurance plan will have lower overhead, so it will be more affordable. And the competition will force private insurers to lower their rates and provide better value.
• Offer you a choice. If you like your current insurance, you can keep it. If not, you can switch to a new public health insurance plan and still receive high-quality care and choose your doctor.
• Guarantee access to affordable health care. No matter what happens with your job or your health, the public health insurance option will be available to you and your family.
Passing health care reform with President Obama's public option would be a truly historic achievement that would improve millions of lives across the country. With this much at stake, we just can't afford to be silent.
...
Thanks again for all you do.

Hi, Fountain Valley MOM,
Thanks for posting your thoughtful points above (IF NOT PUBLIC OPTION THEN WHAT OPTION? Today at 1:57 pm EDT)Sorry to be delayed reading and responding.
I think, as President Obama says, a public option is an important part of his second core principle (guaranteeing choice). Plus, it is a good strategy for his first core principle (reducing costs).
But saying public option is probably not enough, and I see that you agree.
President Obama's third core principle (ensuring quality care for all)calls for attention to much more.
If we take part of the Health Care Reform agenda at the expense of the whole, we could well end up with a hole that a lot of us will fall through.
We have at least 51 US "laboratories" of public options that operate now - Medicare for older people and disabled people and Medicaid (that differs in detail from state to state) for low income people.
We can tell from the problems with Medicare that we need to be careful about terrible problems in the details. One example is the doughnut hole that leaves many patients without crucial medication for a good portion of the year unless they live in a lucky Medicaid state or find a charity or family with something still left on their credit card.
We can tell from problems with Medicaid that inequities among us can easily arise so that quality care available to people in one state is not available to those in a different state.
As Speaker of the House Pelosi says, it doesn't matter if you call it public option or patient option.
What matters is that a whole Health Care Reform with ALL the important details gets enacted this year.
It would be nicer if it was simpler, but …
When people say (a) public option or (b) nothing, I say this: I've had (a) public option, (b) private insurance and (c) nothing. And I have to say none of the above works well enough.

I can't believe that the media and some people are ready to give up on President Obama. Don't these people realize that it's going to take more than 7 months to clean up the disasterous mess that Butthead Bush made? That idiot drove our country into the ground and it takes a while to come out from the bottom of the hole that he dug for us. President Obama and his staff are doing everything they can to help the people of this country who need help desparately and that they are doing everything they can to help our country get back on it's feet.
God Bless President Obama!

WHO CONTROLS OUR HEALTH CARE? Wall Street!!!
None other than, guess who? Wall Street!!! Yep, go figure...
Wall Street continues to bilk us. First we bail them out, now they control our health care options by running bogus public relations campaigns and intimidating politicians - Link below to read the Truth here on Bill Moyers 7/9/09 PBS interview with the key executive titan, Wendell Potter, who plotted and planned the PR campaign to destroy public confidence in Michael Moore's documentary, Sicko, and in health care reform during the Clinton administration. Potter steps up to tell the truth in a frightening and enlightening turnabout PBS interview. Learn about how we are all one step away from bankruptcy or death (even if you have health care coverage), if we don't take control of our options.
