If he wanted to say something about a gorilla, maybe he should talk about his own mother, his sister, his aunt, his daughter, etc. Given his photo, looks don't run in his line!

Folks are being encouraged to call their Senators and Congressional representative by progressive radio and make certain that whatever is determined as the final bill/program, it must contain a SINGLE PAYER option or a Government option.
Remind them that not only do you expect their support of this issue, that this single issue will determine how you and everyone you know will vote come next year.
Further, check out OPEN SECRETS to determine how much money your representative has taken from Insurance, Big PHarma, and the Medical Lobby and let then know you know about the money and you expect your interest to be put ahead of these corporate entities.
If out President says hit the streets on this issue, bring your family and friends with you!

In regards to keeping costs down on healthcare, I remember awhile back listening to Dr. Dean O'Dell on the radio talking about healthcare drug costs. (Not sure how you spell his name as I have only heard him speak never seen his name in writing.) I think it was about the time that states were trying to get drugs cheaper from Canada and they were being blocked. Dr. Dean said that drugs were researched and developed by US Pharmaceuticals and the cost of the research and development was passed onto the US cost, not the other countries of the world. He said that was the reason other countries could get the drugs cheaper than the USA could get them. I am not sure if this is correct or still correct or not, but I remember thinking at the time that the cost of research and development should be passed onto everyone using the drugs throughout the world not just the USA. Anyone know anything about this?

It is highway Robbery what the Drug companies ask and get. I think we ought to give them a generous mark-up possiblity and cap it at that. We are seeing a thousand percent mark-up and more now.
The Republicans worry that "government is interfering with free enterprise. I say it is "we the people" stopping run-away greed. There is undoubtedly colusion involved here and it could probably be proved. Price-fixing is illegal...even if it is tacit agreement of let's charge whatever the hell we want until they squeak.
Well we're squeaking now...and we better get greased.

Those advocating single payer and structures such as the Canadian, UK or other countries health care systems have done a pretty good job of helping insurance and the GOP defeat meaningful healthcare reform by providing ammunition for stoking 'fear' about breaking what does work in the US system.
The folks looking to actually support meaningful healthcare reform had better get it together in regards to a public plan option. That goes for folks on here as well. Whether it's intentional or not, the single payer vs public plan option 'debate' has NOT had a constructive outcome.
Will we take the opportunity to grab defeat when we could have had success instead? That remains to be seen and depends in large part on whether we listen to the psych ops of the GOP and the insurance industry.
I was hoping to see that we have moved on to the other accompanying core cost saving mechanisms that are necessary for a public plan option to be effective.
With any luck we can still do this but the odds are definately shifting away from our favor.

I disagree...
Seems to me that Single Payer groups have right to put forth their points of view;
... can't see that it HINDERS getting a Public Option Plan.
Methinks, that Health Care Industry would accept a Public Health Plan as "an alternative" to the all-out Single Payer Plan, which would totally eliminate their carcasses!
(not that I wouldn't think it a good idea to do just that!)
Need to make SURE that Public Plan Option doesn't include some stinkin' "Trigger", that would actually disqualify folks from access to Public Plan Option!

I agree with you that everyone has a 'right' to express their views. In no way did I intend to suggest otherwise.
That being said the single payer folks that suggest that the strategy of using public plan option as a 'fallback' position are in my view doing a disservice to healthcare reform, not just because of the component of dishonesty in that position, but because it puts all reform at unnecessary risk.
We have improved our chances of failure to get meaningful health care reform by dividing the support for a public plan option. For as much as people talk about the incompetence of the GOP they have done a good job sabotaging healthcare reform with this single arrow.
I suspect that pretty much all single payer advocates disagree with me (or they would not be single payer advocates), but the fact remains the arguments against socialized medicine have traction precisely because of single payer folks and they are only muted with public plan option confusion.
All in all, a great job by those sabotaging healthcare reform. It's been said many times that the democratic party just can't maintain ourselves as a force because of our lack of self-discipline. For all our talk about selflessness, the GOP has folks 'take one for the team' more often than we do. We would rather let the ship sink than be the one to get wet. It reamains to be seen how much damage our 'supporters' can do and the frustrating part is people know exactly what they are doing.
For all the bull crap about the public wants single payer, I'll remind folks that Clinton (with mandates for health insurance) lost and Obama (public plan option with no mandates) won . To say that some non-binding survey takes precedence over a national election is a bit insulting to everyone that voted. The GE counts, despite what the GOP may say.
We ran on a public plan option, we voted for a public plan option, so those who advocate otherwise need to understand they not only don't support Obama, but disavow the eleciton results. That's fine if that's how people feel, but don't do it under the banner of supporting Obama.
(The above is solely my opinion and not intended to reflect the views of any other person or party.).

I disagree. I think the broad support for a government single payer plan (that 60-70% of Americans support!) only helps radicalize our congressmen into thinking of radical new solutions, including some sort of dumbed-down "public option."

I don't want the Insurance companies to suffer catastrophically although if they have been making as much money, unfairly, as we think they have, there may be no alternative.
My apologies to those who work for insurance companies. Better get your aps in early for the public plan jobs.

Do you have a particularly outrageous medical bill that you want to tell your Senators about? Do you spend an unacceptable amount every year on health care? Let Washington know by filling out the form to the right with your information. You can submit the information for just one bill or you can use the amount you spend for health care in a typical week, month, or year.
We'll generate a medical bill without all your personal information (except your name) that you can share on Facebook, print, and mail to your U.S. Senators. The bill also provides information on where the average health dollar is spent, including administrative costs, medical errors and insurance industry profits.
As the health care reform debate heats up on the hill, sometimes it feels like Congress doesn't see what we see. Will you help them understand the urgency of this crisis by sending your "medical bill" to Capitol Hill?

Dear MoveOn member,
Less than 48 hours ago, the biggest corporations in the country declared war on President Obama's agenda. The scale of the attack is mind-boggling.
The right-wing lobbyists at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will spend $100 million to defeat Obama's plans for health care and a clean energy economy. They call it their "most important project" in nearly 100 years.1
Congress is voting on a crucial energy bill in less than two weeks, and you can count on a barrage of misleading TV ads and arm-twisting in Congress aimed at weakening the bill. We're countering with an emergency organizing drive to strengthen the energy bill-but we urgently need to raise the funds to power our organizing drive.
Can you chip in $35 to help fight back against the Chamber's campaign?
Link
Your local Chamber of Commerce represents small businesses, but the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is different-it represents the interests of mega-corporations, especially Big Oil and Coal.
In the next ten days, we'll pull out all the stops to block the Chamber and strengthen the energy bill. And after the big vote, we'll keep going just as strong-demanding a public health insurance option in the health care bill, fighting for tough new rules to rein in the financial industry, and making sure Obama's progressive agenda gets enough grassroots support to succeed.
This is an all-hands-on-deck moment, so we're pulling together our best online, grassroots, and legislative strategies to:
Flood Capitol Hill with thousands of phone calls.
Buy online ads targeted to get the attention of opinion-makers in key House districts.
Bring together progressive members of Congress to speak out about the problems in the bill.
Hand-deliver petitions to dozens of local congressional offices-and hold media events outside to highlight the voices of unemployed people calling for clean energy jobs.
Hold face-to-face meetings with congressional staff in Washington and in communities across the country.
Launch a new website, StrengthenIt.org, where we'll rally local environmental groups to the cause.
We're deciding this weekend on our final plan for pushing Congress before the vote-so we need to know what resources we have available. Can you chip in $35?

Thanks for all you do.

Free health and dental care for all citizens will be a great spiritual and economic boon for our nation. The burst to lofty humanistic spirits and savings in the pocketbooks of our citizens will be great. Of course the forces of selfishness and greed in partnership with the parasitic lobbyists will be great. This morning an article in the Washington Post spells out many members of Congress have many monetary interests in the private health sector. Now we can see more clearly why there was such great opposition to the public plan. They will lose. We the American people will cherish, love and care for the well being of each other without fail. Let the parasites and lobbyists have a good cry in their soup. With free health and dental care the great majority will honor our ascent to an higher humanity.

Hi, everyone - I hope you are enjoying a nice Saturday. The sun is shining here in Massachusetts and that is a welcome sight. When looking at the headlines from the MSM I found that CNN is inviting comments on the question "Can America Afford Health Care Reform?" They want stories, opinions and comments and it might be a forum to state your point of view. Go to CNN.com and click on "Politics" (sorry, I still have not mastered posting a link - please forgive this old (66) computer illiterate Obama supporter!) The more I think about it, the clearer it becomes: there is definitely an organized push against the President's agenda, regardless of any proposal's merits and details. So we MUST stay on top of all the issues and combine our efforts to make more noise than the naysayers. We should be able to succeed - after all, we have the facts on our side.

I currently have an unregulated and unregistered sub-prime mortgage that is not government insured.
The loan originated in Florida in 2006 by Freemont Investment & Loans.
It is not a second mortgage.
I have never missed a payment, never recieved a late payment penalty, no previous modifications, no defaults and no foreclosure.
In 2008 my loan originator tranferred payment servicing rights to Carrington Mortgage Services in California.
In April I applied for a modification to simply lower my current interest rate and payment.
I called Carrington this morning to find out the status of my modification and was ultimately treated like dirt.
I did not authorize a collateralize debt obligation or contractual relationship between my loan originator and Wallstreet.
I never authorized the rating agencies to rate my sub-prime loan debt with a Triple A ratings only to have someone else gain a profit.
I have never even authorized my lender to export my mortgage loan debt to someone else inside or outside of the U.S.A.
Although the modification is still pending I am being told that a new rate of 7.35% would be fixed for 5-years and after the 5th year the rate would lock in at whatever the National Average Rate happens to be in 2014. ?#@!
Have anyone else experience this ?
Is this the beginning of another predatory dilemma?
Does this suppose to replace "Judicial Modification" for primary Homeowners?
It seems even more discrimnatory to me!

Go to Whitehouse.gov and search the site. I believe they have a link where people who want asistance with their mortgage deal can get help. Go to a regular bank well known to be reputable locally and ask them what can be done. You might be surprised.
Interests rates have gone up slightly, but NO one should be paying upwards of 7%.

In what many are describing as an upset victory of unprecedented proportions, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins last night to win the 2009 Stanley Cup, Iran's Interior Ministry announced today.
According to the ministry, which Mr. Ahmadinejad runs, the Iranian hard-liner defeated the Penguins by a score of 6-0, scoring two hat tricks in the victory.
But Penguins star Evgeni Malkin immediately disputed Mr. Ahmadinejad's claim, arguing that the Iranian president did not even appear in the game.
Mr. Ahmadinejad scoffed at Mr. Malkin's charge, stating, "He's just pissed that I was named MVP."
The Iranian president took time out from celebrating his Stanley Cup win to announce that he had just been named Poet Laureate of England.

"Don't people come from all over the world for American health care?" is a rhetorical question you'll hear asked again and again, particularly by those who don't think our system needs fixing. Yes, some people do come here. But plenty of Americans likewise leave the country for cheaper medical procedures in other countries - enough that there are actually Web sites catering to "medical tourism," as though you were shopping for a good computer or a nice vacation spot. If we have the best health care system in the world, why are people in such a rush to leave it?

What I have taken away most powerfully from the events in Iran is that a substantial majority of the Iranian people realized that they could come together and make a powerful statement to the entire world, that they want real change - that they want a resoundingly positive relationship with the rest of the world.
This is a statement that we have heard and we will never forget. Change is hard - it may take time for the Iranian people to get there, but they will get there eventually. And we need to make sure that the Iranian people know that we believe in them and that they have given us a greater sense of hope for the entire region.
I'm baffled by the reaction of many on the right - I thought that we all shared a desire to see people throughout the world embrace freedom and democracy. I cannot believe how many right-wingers actually seem happy that the will of the people in Iran has been thwarted. How does someone go from wanting to overthrow Saddam and set up a democracy in Iraq with free elections to wanting the will of the people in Iran to be thwarted by the forces of reaction? I hope that they will come to their senses and recognize that they are now rooting for everything they were rooting against when President Bush was in office. This is madness.

That's why we need to keep going in the direction we are on now. I like our new administration. It represents all of America. We need to keep going to the polls, keep voting to keep these type of people OUT! There's no place for them in our new multi-cultural America.
If he wants to talk about gorillas, he should talk about his own mother, wife, sister, etc. Leave the First Lady out of it!
Just a tidbit...because of this article, I hope we won't have to deal much longer with folks like DePass...

It will be nice to have lots of different folks who can concentrate on actual issues and focus on solving problems without calling folks "Sambo" (like Sarah Palin called President Obama)
Link
and DePass and his "gorilla" chant. Multi-racial people would only have time to focus on issues, and not race and skin color. We need that. We've tried it the other way, too long. And to be honest, people like Palin and folks like DePass still get too much support and too many votes. It's unacceptable.
Let's continue with a real America.

4:40 PM ET -- "Senior U.S. officials" doubt Iran results. Fox News quotes unnamed U.S. analysts weighing in on Iran:
U.S. analysts find it "not credible" that challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi would have lost the balloting in his hometown or that a third candidate, Mehdi Karoubi, would have received less than 1 percent of the total vote, a senior U.S. officials told FOX News.
Despite a reportedly record turnout of 85 percent, the senior official said given the "not credible" counts for Mousavi and Karoubi, the turnout clearly was questionable.
Another senior official said the Obama administration would not describe the outcome as legitimate or illegitimate or deem a victory by Mousavi as necessarily better.
"We're not going to characterize what would have been a better or worse scenario," the official said. "We will deal with this as it is, not as we wish it to be.

It seems to me with the crowds on the days before the election in Iran and the number of people wearing green linking to be over one million that the results of the election being over 60% for the incumbant doesn't even make sense. Plus there was more than two candidates running. It seems like an unlikely outcome percentage seeing the number of people in the streets standing in line to vote and the exit poll info taken. A rigged election seems probable. We even see questionable outcomes here too. The fact that the computer and cell phone links were cut so communication was not possible was also a sign of questionability. I agree that change does not come easily.

The unidentified election official in the link above mentioned there was no count it was just filling in numbers on the outcome as was wanted. It said the officials were hand picked for pliability and loyalty (my words). Another link further up said ballot boxes were burned in the street. That eliminates recounts. There is also a suggestion that the opposing candidates have disappeared.

85% of the Iranian eligible voters cast their ballots in their presidential elections. Their democratic participation was over 30% higher than our historic 2008 presidential election. Let's give a great salute to the Iranian people and extend a warm congratulations to President Ahmadinejad and let us all work for a great and peaceful relationship between our nations.

Once the dust settles (in a week), can the US have a say one way or the other. Remember we do not want to Alienate all these young voters either!

Why not set up an Insurance Company not for profit like the University Health Systems which is not controlled or managed by the Pitt County Government, but has an agreement to provide health care at a price to cover the cost of operating and managing the hospital.
Why not allow an entity or group with an investment from the Federal Government who will provide insurance to the 46 million uninsured and to provide insurance to others who desire to have fully covered insurance? The Board of Directors can be representatives from congress, healthcare industry and ordinary citizens whose focus is to help create a more efficient and productive system with quality healthcare.
The not for profit insurance company can help systems all over the United States to adopt models that are low cost and greater quality by offering incentives to doctors, healthcare providers and others that find ways to lower cost. Incentives such as a percentage of the proven savings, or bonuses for effective programs which encourages people to make healthy choices. The Health Industry need to start rewarding people who lowers cost and encourages people to take steps to improve their eating habits, start exercising and visiting their doctors on a regular basis.
The Government can still allow competition to help drive down costs and influence the industry to make radical changes by allow entities to bid or present proposals to start an insurance company that encompasses the President's goals for Healthcare reform. I do believe that people who are allowed to be innovative, given a set of goals, a mission, a vision and objectives can put a system in place that creates a healthcare system not only of high quality but one that is affordable. In order for such a non-profit insurance company to be successful, the 46 million uninsured must pay into the system either through taxes or insurance premiums, businesses or individuals must be allowed to participate with the understanding that visits to the doctor, following doctor's guidelines and participating in various programs offer to help us to stay healthy will be a requirement.
I think the idea of non-profit or not for profit insurance company really gives you and this country the best of all worlds. This should help to bring Republicans on board and start the process of changing our healthcare system built upon capitalism, current successful models and the priniciples outlined by you.

Hey Brad...
Recall bravado of former Republican congressman, Tom Tancredo?
When he was running for President, all he ever did was rail against "illegal aliens in this country" ???
Caught a special on FOX today about Madoff swindle-ponzi-scheme.
Turns out that Tom Tancredo lost nearly $1 million in funds that he'd invested with the company Agile Group, based in Boulder.
(Invested with Bernie Madoff)
"In reality, we lost just about everything we owned in our retirement account," Tancredo said.
Guess what?
Ultra conservative Tancredo-"everything should be done by individuals; government should stay out of our lives" (FOX moderator played back a clip of Tom saying these words during Presidential campaign) NOW wants our government TAX PAYER'S MONEY to reimburse his loss!
FOX guy pointed out to him that Tom always was tough on everyone ELSE who wanted a Government handout, but now that Tancredo's "Ox is being gored", it's perfectly fair for Tancredo to stiff Tax Payers!!!
Can you smell HYPOCRISY ???

Brad is a typical Republican who only spouts hatred and work against ideas instead of offering suggestions or solutions to our problems. President Obama is correct that Republicans know how to politic but do not know how to govern. I hope the American voters will look for people to govern instead of politician who can politic.
Whether people are here legally or illegally, we need to find a way to keep healthcare costs low and the insured or taxpayers from having to pay for those who can do not have insurance. Also, we need insurance coverage that will keep people from going into bankruptcy due to medical costs.

He just received a SAT phone call from his brother in Tehran who reports that the rooftops of nighttime Tehran are filled with people shouting 'Allah O Akbar' in protest of the government and election results. The last time he remembers this happening is in 1979 during the Revolution. Says the sound of tens of thousands on the rooftops is deafening right now."
That would be around four in the morning. The last time a news event gave me chills like this was the Soviet coup. It ended the regime.

Even Conan O'Brien was ramming twitter down my throat. I never read "1984" so I had to look it up.
"The adjective Orwellian describes the situation, idea, or societal condition that George Orwell identified as being destructive to the welfare of a free society. It connotes an attitude and a policy of control by propaganda, surveillance, misinformation, denial of truth, and manipulation of the past, including the "unperson" -- a person whose past existence is expunged from the public record and memory, practiced by modern repressive governments. Often, this includes the circumstances depicted in his novels, particularly Nineteen Eighty-Four."

Election battles turn into street fights in Iran
By ANNA JOHNSON and BRIAN MURPHY, AP
TEHRAN, Iran -- Opponents of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad clashed with police in the heart of Iran's capital Saturday, pelting them with rocks and setting fires in the worst unrest in Tehran in a decade.
They accused the hard-line president of using fraud to steal election victory from his reformist rival.
The brazen and angry confrontations -- including stunning scenes of masked rioters tangling with black-clad police -- pushed the self-styled reformist movement closer to a possible moment of truth:
Whether to continue defying Iran's powerful security forces or, as they often have before, retreat into quiet dismay and frustration over losing more ground to the Islamic establishment.

Increasing the number of doctors could create more competition between private practices and hospitals. This competition could lead to lower costs for patients and companies.
Or, how about allowing new doctors to perform their internships aboard? This would help create more doctors and their experiences would probably benefit their piers and hospitals when then return.

Isack,
You write, "occasion to demonstrate in favor of single-payer universal health care."
Here's what our President hopes to achieve.
Remarks of President Barack Obama
Health Care Town Hall
Thursday, June 11, 2009
Green Bay, Wisconsin
Excerpts from President Barack Obama's speech:
"It is wonderful to be back here in Green Bay.
My view is that reform should be guided by a simple principle:
…we fix what's broken and build on what works.
So what we're working on is the creation of something called a Health Insurance Exchange -
… which would allow you to one-stop shop for a health care plan, compare benefits and prices, and choose the plan that's best for you.
None of these plans would be able to deny coverage on the basis of a pre-existing condition, and all should include an affordable, basic benefit package.
And if you can't afford one of the plans, we should provide assistance to make sure you can.
I also strongly believe that ONE of the OPTIONS in the Exchange should be a PUBLIC INSURANCE OPTION - because if the PRIVATE INSURANCE COMPANIES have to COMPETE with a PUBLIC OPTION, it will keep them honest and HELP KEEP PRICES DOWN.

But, the Party of NO already has a corner on NO!
You don't want to ruin one of the few things the GOP has left, do you? :)
We can be positive to support our President -- about the three principles and how they mean we must have a strong public option.
Isack, I read a post by you above on a different topic saying, "Actually caution is what is required..."
Maybe we need the same sort of approach about co-ops in the work we do for health care reform this year -- let's see how they work out and can be changed and maybe become a useful addition to the array of choices. As Nancy Pelosi said, not as a substitute for public options. But why not see what they could be as an addition?

This season has really bothered me with his anti-religion talk. It's one thing to not buy into religion. It's another thing to make fun and belittle religion and thus making fun of people who are religious. He makes some kind of snide comment almost every show, and I have found it offensive. He's just as self-righteous in his non-belief of religion as many ultra-religious people are in their faith.
To say that Obama is just phoning in his presidency and focused on his "celebrity" was a low blow and really disrespectful to Obama who, no matter how one feels about his policies so far, all can see that he is working his ass off.

Another thing that bothered me about his Friday show was when Ben Jealous of the NAACP mentioned the tragedy of the man sentenced to death (I forget which state) for a murder that it appears he did not commit. The eyewitnesses have recanted their testimony but the state won't give the man a new trial. Jealous is fighting on his behalf. Maher basically ridiculed Jealous for bringing it up.
Yet he was sucking up to that unfunny republican clown P. J. O'Rourke.

And then P.J. said something about how it's always been bad in that area of Baltimore. Ben tried to mention certain parts of D.C. are hurting too, and once again, he was brushed off by Bill.

I always thought I was pretty liberal too, but then again, I only started becoming very political and reading political blogs when this campaign started getting hot. These blogs have put a whole new perspective for me of what liberal and conservative is.
What I have found, and Maher basically confirmed it for me, is that those on the ultra-left who are totally disappointed with Obama right now, are very similar to the ultra right, that has sunk, and continues to sink the Republican party. Obviously the similarities aren't in views. The similarity is in tactics and rhetoric.
However, Bush pandered to the right wing for a while, then abandoned them...Obama's never gone there with the far left, so they are REALLY frustrated for not even being thrown a bone.
Another thing I have noticed with SOME within the "liberal base" is that they are fixated with the right wing. I honestly believe 1/2 of Fox News's ratings are from CERTAIN liberals. I am astonished to go to Dkos, for example, and see diary after diary of what happened on Fox, or with Rush, or with this right winger, or that right winger...it's unreal. Same thing with liberal talk radio (with the exception of Thomm Hartman and Ed Schultz(for the most part)). Some like Stephanie Miller will spend hours playing clips of Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, all of them. And then bitching about what they said.
So, I have come to the conclusion that SOME within the "liberal base" are not happy if they aren't complaining, which they call "holding people's feet to the fire." Since it's hard to complain about Obama, they complain about the right wing talkers, and then when Obama gives them something to complain about, they go head first, all in with criticisms.
At the end of the day, Bill Maher advocated that Obama act like Bush. Only the progressive version. So, as a logical person, I must say - I do not want Obama and the fate of the Democratic Party to end like Bush and the Republicans under his reign.
But we must remember, Bill Maher is cool with Ann Coulter.

I'm glad to see our President sticking to his agenda and doing what he feels is right. The far-left is trying to take over his presidency and he should not let them. They have no real idea what it's like to govern and try to work with all the different camps.
If they're so smart (you, Maher) they should run for office.

Vero-
I agree with your assessment that both the Far Right and Far Left have traits in common of being extreme. I do think that the far left is not as mean as the far right though. Obama never professed to be that Liberal but he was tagged with that label by the MSM.
Most people just saw Obama as their answer to whatever they wanted. He most definitely spoke and wrote tons about his stands on issues. I was always amazed about people claiming he flipped or flopped on an issue when he had never said what they were claiming he had. Also his stands were completely explained even though they were somewhat nuianced.
I am wondering with the rigid demands and the divisions even within the Democratic party how we will be able to change things. Obama believes in coming to agreements and changing what people can agree to change. I think he works change more incrementally than drastically. Finding commonality first then moving from there a little at a time. Most seem to desire it needs to be my way or the highway approach. Changes do not always come all at once. When you look in totality you will see a lot of change.

US rejects victory claim by Iran's Ahmadinejad
By CAROLYN THOMPSON, AP
NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario -- The U.S. on Saturday refused to accept hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's claim of a landslide re-election victory in Iran and said it was looking into allegations of election fraud.
Any hopes by the Obama administration of gaining a result similar to Lebanon's recent election, won by a Western-backed moderate coalition, appeared to be in jeopardy.
"We are monitoring the situation as it unfolds in Iran, but we, like the rest of the world, are waiting and watching to see what the Iranian people decide," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said at a news conference with Canada's foreign affairs minister, Lawrence Cannon.
Minutes after Clinton spoke, the White House released a two-sentence statement praising "the vigorous debate and enthusiasm that this election generated, particularly among young Iranians," but expressing concern about "reports of irregularities."

Yes, the willful spreading of false and misleading information is very problematic. I just don't know how we combat it. The constitution doesn't protect the first amendment rights of advertisers using false or misleading statements in commercials, for example, but political commentary is even more protected speech, so they have much more freedom to say whatever they want.
All we can do is just call out the B.S. when we see and hear it.

You know...Obama reads newspapers. I'm sure he will end up reading this piece. It is well intentioned and well-written, and makes very good points.
But I wonder how it must make Obama feel. I can only imagine how hard this must be to "dust off his shoulders." It's got to make him pause and feel somewhat vulnerable.

I wonder too and feel sorry for what he has to go through. He had to fight this hatred during the primary and the general and now when he's working his butt off to dig this country out of the hell hole the republican's put us in, this is what he gets.
This is why we must have his back and help push his agenda through and continue to pray that God keeps him strong. They God he has his family to surround him with love. And us!!!

You know, I may be guilty of being too fluffy and too frivolous and too trusting and positive regarding Obama, but I really feel like he needs some positivity from the people to counter the negativity. This man has kept true to what he campaigned on and I cannot, for the life of me, understand where some of the animosity, particularly on the left, is coming from. His handling of the banks, not ideal, but it's not an ideal situation, so I don't know what else could've been done. Same thing with the auto companies. He said he wanted the public/private health care reform, that's what he's gunning for. He said he was going to ramp up Afganistan and wind down Iraq, that's what he's done. He said he was going to hunt down al Qaeda - he's doing it. Yes, civilians are dying, but that is part of war. I could go on and on, but for me, he's doing exactly what I thought he'd do, in some respects better, in others, not so. And in the cases where he hasn't done things exactly as I anticipated, he's explained his deviations.
He's only human, and if all he feels is criticism and hating and anger, it'll eventually adversely affect him, and our country as a result. So I really just try to foster some level of positivity, so that some of the good vibes can reach him too.

A fair percentage of the people coming here complaining would say you are too trusting because you won't join them in calling for his impeachment. This craziness has been going on since before he took office. The powers that be don't want change.
The powers that be are ubiquitous and have vast resources. There are some very smart people that oppose President Obama. Don't they worry about their children growing up in a culture even more corporately dominated than we already are?

We beat the powers that be by getting him elected. They had money then, but we helped President Obama raise money like they'd never seen.
We hit the streets and got out the vote.
My stupid state hadn't voted blue since the 60s. Don't tell me we can't beat them.
I say, "Yes we can."
As President Obama said in his DNC speech, we cannot turn back. I refuse to turn back. The haters will not make me turn back.

Yes, let's all email bomb whitehouse.gov with positive, love-filled messages to our President.
Also, if you haven't read the comments to Frank Rich's column on HP, you should. People are really angry at the rethugs and worried about our President.
I feel we must let our legislators and the advertisers for the MSM know we will no longer tolerate this hate-speech directed at our President.
We -- the change we seek -- must hold them accountable.
We got President Obama to the White House and we're going to keep him there.

Health of a Nation/Iranian Election |
Report to Admin

Jun 14th 2009 at 1:22 am EDT (Updated Jun 14th 2009 at 1:22 am EDT)
Normally I try and talk about the topic on the blog and health care reform is very important.
Still, just have to make a comment on the news of the day with the Iranian election, and there's been a thread of thought that some how blames the President for not getting the more moderate candidate in office.
First off, anyone who thinks Obama's speech to the Middle East had no effect on the outcome of the Iranian Election has (in my opinion) missed something very critical.
Though the figure at the top may not have changed, and the policy he supports may not have changed, yet the fact that their are significant riots in the street and internet activity cut off, demonstrates the current Iranian president (nor the mullas) has the tacit support of the Iranian people at large, especially the young.
The many people, young and old, in Iran have access to the web, to the news CNN, BBC, Iranian news etc.. and they are not stupid.
Just as we look at issues from all sides, so do they.
It is the young that work. It is the young that dream, it is the young that believe in something better. Squash that, and you've squashed a country. But, the Iranian people will prevail. Probably will take another 4 years but, just like this country, it might take another 4 years of being pissed with one's leadership to make real change.
They can try and hide in government buildings, behind doctrine, and writings. Try and protect through manipulation and force what they believe they are entitled to but the deeper truth is, they will learn the art of letting the winds of change move through them or they will have to put their country to heel and this time, they better be ready for a long internal fight.
The young are not going to sing and dance the way the mullah told them to. They actually want to work with this administration.
Trust me, the President's speech was very effective. Sometimes, it's the lack of change.... which creates greater change.
Not that I'm a policy expert but I just say Mr. President, continue to do your thing. Monitor the situation. Depending on how the Iranian Government treats its people is our clue of how we treat them.
It's really that simple.

And before I close, I'd like to recognize one such servant who is not with us tonight, but who was mentioned earlier, and that's our good friend, Tim Russert. I know that Luke and Maureen are here.
And I know Tim enjoyed these dinners very much. And I also know how much he would have enjoyed covering this election. And I know that John and I would have been quaking in our boots preparing for our appearances on "Meet the Press."

She is a student who speaks perfect english nad she says that the police and intelligence forces have dressed in plain clothe and are attacking the peaceful protesters the are chasing and attcking women and young children beating them with batons; breaking into to private homes and destroying them
She says the huge crowd that we see at the Achmadinajad rally have all been bused in from surrounding villages and are not the people of Tehran.
You can hear the screams and she saysd those are people in their homes getting beaten by police in civilian clothes without cause.

I heard that, too. Mousavi wants them to cancel the "election" that already happened. I am not Iranian, but to me, it just seems all rigged. When I saw the crowds on tv, for the "winner's" speech, I knew that it was staged. I said to myself, those folks are being bused in. It looks as if Mousavi won, and they just didn't give him his due. And then all the mess about no twitter, no cell phones, etc. It just doesn't seem right.

The part that seemed fishy to me was that the incumbant supposedly won with more than 60% while there were more than two running. Upon seeing the large crowds wearing green in days before the election and seeing the large turnouts for the election and hearing the ballot boxes were burned right after the announcement as well as the people running against the incumbant disappeared it seems unlikely that the 60+% quoted was correct. Maybe the fact that so many are protesting the results will show the world that the leader does not speak for all Iranians.

"Michelle Obama, girls get rare London palace tour", Associated Press, today :
By NANCY ZUCKERBROD, Associated Press Writer Nancy Zuckerbrod, Associated Press Writer - 12 mins ago
LONDON - First came the hug, then a guided tour of Buckingham Palace.
First Lady Michelle Obama, on a visit to London last week, got permission from Queen Elizabeth II for a guided tour of the palace with her daughters, Sasha and Malia.
They were shown around the queen's official residence and its gardens and the queen herself greeted them afterward, according to a royal source who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was private.
In April, during a visit to Britain with her husband, Michele Obama made a warm impression on the queen -- so much so that the monarch strayed from protocol and briefly wrapped her arm around the first lady in a rare public show of affection. The first lady also put her arm around the monarch.

Hey guys, I read the commentary on my Bill Maher post- lots of good feedback.
Vero, I think you hit the nail-on-the-head. Maher's comments were low that PBO is 'phoning it in' and that he 'hasn't done anything'. Quite frankly, I never understood the appeal of Bill Maher- he's like a liberal version of Dennis Miller imo (and that's not a good thing).
I think it's odd that so many politicos think they know what's best for PBO and not only do they feel the need to tell him what to do and how to act BUT also feel the need to cut him down while doing so. It's disheartening.
I understand that some on the left don't want to be 'cheerleaders' like the right was with Bush, but this constant negativity is unhealthy. And the reality is is that President Obama can probably use a few more cheerleaders in order to combat some of the hate being spewed at him from the far right.
There is all this talk about President Obama and whether he's up to the task, or meeting expectations but what about us? What about the American people? Are we up to the task? Can we rise to the occassion to overcome our many challenges or will it be business as usual? Cause it seems to me that Bill Maher and the like are doing business as usual.
Sitting around whining about the President isn't productive. Going out and getting involved in your community, helping your neighbor, or the elderly- that's where real change can happen.
Apathy only breeds an indifferent society and bad government so get involved.

I'm done listening to these people on tv...their bottom line is ratings and to keep their name out there so they'll have a job, money, health insurance, etc. The things that many Americans do not have...ignore them, and keep on pushing for health care.
These actors don't know more than President Obama or lots of folks on this site. If they all knew as much as they think they do, all our problems would be solved. But it looks like most people on tv, all they know how to do is keep negative remarks, pessimism, and anything that does not help going. They're experts at being "Debbie Downer" types.
I'm a realist. I don't want anything sugar coated. I know people don't always get everything they want and sometimes, when we do, it doesn't happen when we want it, etc. President Obama is like that, a realist. But the ratings that the actors and reporters on tv need are their bread and butter. Fine, but they don't know President Obama's job. Just like he isn't on tv, trying to be negative and bring the American spirit down, keep it down, and keep everything the same. The same doesn't work. We've tried it. That's why we voted for President Obama, for change. He's trying to deliver and they're trying to block it. The ball is in the people's court. Get behind the president to make it happen.

Well said, Kim and Vegas.
I also can't shake the feeling that many of the President's strongest critics are a little jealous of him. The main thing politicians and television personalities have in common is EGO. And it's got to be a bit annoying to see just how loved and successful Obama is. So, they pontificate and declare what's he's doing wrong, because it makes them feel relevant...as if they are on his level.
To finally conclude this Maher discussion I just want to say that I think people should have beef with Obama if they really do not agree with him. But a sure-fire way to have your beef lay on deaf ears is when you deliver your criticisms the way Maher did. As someone who claimed to support Obama, I don't know why he couldn't state his criticisms in a fairer and more respectful tone. Obama has always welcomed criticism, but I'm sure Obama (if he saw that rant) brushed him off as an pompous idiot. You can't take someone serious when they're just launching character attacks and right wing talking points at you, under the guise of wanting to "push him to the left."

I think a lot of the problem is that many people expect a lot of CHANGE immediately including Left leaning commentators. Not only do they expect a lot of change but they expect that what they personally want changed should be what PBO wants done too. Instead of listening to what he said in the campaign they project their wishes on him. There is no sense of reality with timing, politics, or order of priority in their desires. By dissing Pres. Obama so publicly they are influencing many people that do not research anything on their own but listen to the media to determine how things are going. I liked PBO's comparison of turning an oceanliner instead of a speedboat. Visualizing change in those terms puts the job in perspective especially when the House and Senate are involved. That is why our public pressure is needed to help get the change we want, not by dissing our President but by assisting him.

I think their election was rigged. Everything's run by the state, nothing from the other side, etc.
However, I believe President Obama is doing the right thing, just being cautious and not talking too much, too soon. We are not Iranians. It is not the USA. Mitt Romney needs to just be quiet and sit tight like the rest of us Americans. It's not his business about Iran and not his business about what the President should do.

The National Iranian American Council writes:
American policy makers will feel the need to react. But they need to remember this isn't about us. This is about Iran and Iranians seeking the right to determine their own future. The United States can help little and harm much by interjecting itself into the process. The Obama administration's approach to the election -- keeping its comments low-key and not signaling support for any candidate -- was exactly the right approach. While tempting, empty and self-serving rhetorical support for Iranians struggling for more freedoms serves only to aid their opponents. History has made Iran wary of foreign meddling, and American policymakers in particular must be sensitive to giving hardliners any pretense to call reform-minded Iranians foreign agents. That's why Iran's most prominent reformers, including Nobel-laureate Shirin Ebadi, have said the best thing the U.S. can do is step back and let Iran's indigenous human rights movement progress on its own, without overt involvement from the U.S-however well intentioned.

It's a trap. These Republicans are sick in the head. They want Obama to overplay his hand and escalate tensions so that he can be blamed for getting us into some serious, confrontation trouble with Iran.
I'm going to give Mittens the benefit of the doubt and say that he's just playing politics and that he really doesn't think it's good policy for our President to speak out forcefully about the turmoil of the Iranian election while there's massive demonstrations and arrests and uncertainty within their country. From what I read, Biden's performance on MTP was good, he basically said they're waiting to see how it plays out but that there's obvious questions wrt to the election. I hope we keep repeating that line.
Man, Repukes just want to brawl over everything. Damn...

Romney may have been setting a trap for PBO with his comment like when candidate Obama went on the world trip and he was set up by the GOP with the Veteran's hospital visit as either way visiting the soldiers or not he would have been criticized.
My take is it is not a set up but it is a real desire to jump in without careful thinking. That is why I feared having McCain/Palin or most any GOP combo running the country. They'd have had us in a war with Iran over something like the election all in the name of American Patriotism.

ISn't it shocking that now the media and some in congress and the RIGHT WING NUTS are accusing him of emplementing exactly what he promised during the campaigns to the American people??
If anything, the media and big business should be angry at the American people, for after all the president is ONLY FOLLOWING ON HIS PROMISES!
Screw the status Quo, if they were so confident why are they soo worried about the public option plan?? I mean if that plan is soo bad and is gonna fail, why doesn't the GOP and the media just sit by and allow it to fail?? Why are they soo worried??

President Obama's girls haven't had any children yet with their boyfriends? If they had, you bet he wouldn't have been elected.
I'm not throwing stones. I just know that comments like DePass and Palin make are often overlooked. Imus and his type have been making statements like that for years, even worse, but they were allowed to go on. People eventually got tired. Don't pretend like Imus types were just the "one time innocent thing".

You would think that N. Korea isn't threatening to nuke their entire part of the world, Iran is just humming along, the economy is booming again, and cancer is cured, from the way the media and the right is fixating on Letterman. I think every politician's family, unfortunately, comes under unfair and inappropriate fire at some point, and when that happens the person should be shamed and named, but jeez...we have to move on after that. I don't care what comes of Letterman, but this is being blown out of proportion and it is distracting us from the major problems we're facing.

Brad, I know that you just like to come in here and throw hand grenades, then stand back and watch but, seriously...
Letterman's comments weren't funny, but he dedicated a whole segment on his show to apolotgize. He didn't joke about the 14 yr old daughter, it was about the adult 18 yr daughter who did get knocked up, that was carted out in front of the world by Mom.
Why can't she just raise her child. She's on the morning shows talking about abstinence (huh!) and all over magazine covers.
Let it go Brad.
By the way, where is Palin's apology for calling PBO a terrorist.
Or for calling Letterman a child molester?

The only thing damaging America is the constant negative comments from idiots like you. Our President has been working his A off trying to perform miracles and undo/ correct the unbelievable mess that was left by the moron who preceded him in office. By the way, when this imbecile was in office he did whatever he felt like doing; screw the law, screw the constitution, screw the congress, screw the American people and NO ONE said a word.
Now we have a PRESIDENT who hasn't been in office 6 months and he is supposedly single-handedly destroying the country. A country that had one foot in the grave an the other on a banana peel thanks to greed and mismanagement run amok during the last 8 years. Hell, Bush went on vacation for 3 of the 8 years. Name one thing that had to do with the presidency, one agency under the control of the Bush administration, or one department that Bush did not "screw up". Name one.
Well, I have only 2 words for you Brad and anyone who has the nerve to criticize the only one I can see trying to help get this country out of this abyssmal mess "SCREW YOU"!!!

seriously...this is insane. so imus can spew it repeatedly even after being fired and coming back, we have felons doing "news" casts on fox entertainment, we have a media so strangled that even if they get the chance they won't speak the truth, and we are worried about whether letterman has apologized or not....

Your request is being processed... Durbin: US already paying 'hidden' health taxes |

WASHINGTON -- A top Democratic lawmaker says Americans are already paying a "hidden tax" to provide health care for the uninsured.
The Illinois Democrat who is his party's No. 2 official in the Senate, Sen. Dick Durbin, says that there is a $1,000 surcharge in health care premiums to cover people who receive treatment in emergency rooms.
Durbin says President Barack Obama's plan to overhaul the health system would reduce premiums and add more people to health care rolls. That, he says, would have a net effect of lowering the costs.
Durbin says Obama's plan would allow those with insurance to keep their plan if they like it. Nothing would change, he says, unless individuals choose to switch.
Durbin appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Thank you Cynthia, i needed that. I think we ought to start thinking about using "reconciliation" in the senate. Cause we cannot count on dems who are owned by corporations. Bush did it...and so should Obama.
Seems like our last chance. They killed single payer, and now are trying to say the votes are not there for Public plan.

I'd like to think more about reconciliation, too.
I understand there are rules about what can be in bills that use reconciliation.
Isack, if the health care reform bill goes to reconciliation will some things have to be left out? Which parts? Will it be hard to get the parts we need in later? Will the trade off be worth it? When do they have to say they are going the reconciliation route? When can they change if they/we want to?
Maybe cloture will be enough? It doesn't get to the committee level, but it does stop filibustering. (I saw a cloture vote on the tobacco bill from the Senate gallery. It was weirdly thrilling to see the 61 ayes emerging during the sloooow roll call.)

From a terrifying report at DKos:
"From the streets I have updates, a friend in Iran is a sports journalist for the immensely popular national football team. Due to the nature of his reporting, he has been practically ignored, and free to switch his reporting over to covering these events.
This is what he is telling me about what he has heard.
1. The Green protesters have taken over at least two police stations in north of Tehran, the Guards are trying to take back the buildings.
2. University dormitories across Iran have been attacked by the Revolutionary Guards.
3. The building of the ministry of Industry, and a major telecommunication center, have been set on fire.
4. Sharif University's professors have resigned en mass.
5. Unrest in Rasht, Tabriz, Isfahan, Shiraz and every other major city.
Meanwhile inside Government Officials are leaking the REAL election numbers.
Unofficial news - reports leaked results from Interior Ministry:
Eligible voters: 49,322,412
Votes cast: 42,026,078

Isack take a pill man. We will get H.C. done, but what kind of people would we be to focus soley on that now when such events are happening to innocent people.
I am living as you know in Germany and at the time of 9/11 the was a major debate going on here concerning similar matters no less important to the German people than H.C. is to you. However, ALL duiscussion stopped as a result of that event and the world focused on one thing ..... the well being of innocents in New York (My Home!!) Are the innocent people of Iran any less important Isack?? Think about it.

We need to all stay active & involved to ensure a STRONG public option is included in any bill. It should be strong enough to ensure that insurance companies, in order to stay in business, must lower their costs enough to compete with the public plan.
I would love for health insurance companies not to exist since I don't think people should have to fight to get coverage they need when sick. I know that isn't going to happen. I do think that if all of us make calls or send emails to moderate Democrats demanding that they support a strong public option that only takes us into consideration & doesn't cowtow to the insurance companies & their lobbyists, we can make this happen - no one expected Barack Obama to win the Presidency (I did - but I never allowed for any other possibility!) - we made that happen with hard work - that is what this battle & all the battles ahead are going to take - hard work & millions of us working to make it happen

I have a bush in my yard that began to die. At first my wife and I tried to shore it up with plant food, manure, and other nutrients. Yet it just kept dying. This last month, I dug it up by the roots disposed of it and planted a new bush. It's taking off and growing well.
I believe this is analogous to our health care situation. We developed a for profit system that rewarded denial of care and refusal to pay for health insurance companies coupled with gouging for high prices and rewards for ordering more care from pharmaceutical companies, private hospitals, and doctors. In the middle were left the American people, stranded, in need of health care paying high premiums and getting less and less care.
Obama, often you talk the talk but you leave us hanging. Most everyone outside of Washington without an agenda knows that without radical reform in the way of a robust public option or a single payer system (not a 'trigger' option or weakened 'co-ops') you're just throwing fertilizer on a dead system. Your talk sounds fine, but you can't finesse this issue. One day you sound strong the next your spokesmen Robert Gibbs or Rahm Emmanuel make it sound like you're ready to give in to lobbyists and conservative Democrats. You've got us all confused.
Only pulling the system up by the roots and planting a workable system is going to work. Even a fifth grader knows that without a real public option there won't be any real reform. Harper Magazine says that you've become Hoover; a well intentioned incrementalist but not enough of a fighter. Bill Maher says you're just tinkering around the edges. Here's hoping you find your inner Tiger Woods, Derek Fischer, and FDR. We need you to fight for us and leave it all out there on the floor on this one.
