Lately, the news is “reporting” (i.e. supporting) that parents are against president Obama’s upcoming message to students. I find this sad and shameful for several reasons. First and foremost, because instead of people dealing with the message of promoting education, the storyline is reduced to whatever worst-case-scenario, boogey-man, bigoted, uneducated, egotistical view captures believers. Not only do I support whatever the president has to say in promotion of education, but I’m such a loyal Obama supporter, that I want my own kids to be raised with the values that he embodies, and be fully educated about his historic and heroic accomplishments.
President Obama is a wonderful example of the American Dream and a superb role model for all time. While the media tends to get caught up in the moment, which can easily be manipulated to spell failure or scandal in order to make a quick buck, I’ve been busy thinking about a better future… A better way.
Throughout his candidacy and early presidency, Barack Obama has been both the living legend AND the practical leader. He has been both a symbol of the most significant expression of democracy AND the challenge of divisive politics. That’s why I intend to educate my kids and youth in general about him. His story matches well with the values I hold dear. Such as:
You can make it if you try: Courage and Persistence I’ve heard all the naysayers who said that Barack Obama the candidate couldn’t win. They were wrong. Now, they’re saying Obama the president can’t lead. They’re dead wrong. Every day of his life he has to negotiate his own death, just for trying to be the leader of the free world in brown-skinned form. But, he doesn’t quit. He doesn’t pause for a second trying to right the wrongs of the past administration, and generally lead on all issues foreign and domestic, on behalf of all Americans. With courage, he shakes more hands and attends more events. With persistence, he endures insults to him self, his family, and innocent supporters.
You can be what you want to be: Dream Big President Obama seems to be the kind of guy who dreams big, and fortunately for him, it works! But, his opponents say he represents “Big Government” to try to diminish his great good fortune and scare people. Now, it seems that they don’t even want other children to get these “Big Ideas” that they could become empowered or successful either. What a shame. Real patriotism is appreciating the greatness of your country. But, now that the president is black, the media has yet to discredit ignorant arguments that Obama’s “Back to School” speech is a socialist brainwash, rather that the kind of public address a good leader should give, especially in a recession-plagued, declining education system.
You are the master of your own destiny: Personal Responsibility The media is quick to both subliminally and overtly suggest that Barack Obama is some kind of elitist. Sure, he’s unique, being the first black president and all. But, last I checked, nobody fought his early battles without a father for him. No one straightened him out and studied his books for him. No one held his hand through college and young adulthood. No one broke down the barriers at the Harvard Law Review and other institutions for him. Nobody sacrificed wealth for morality in his heart for him. No one believed it was worth risking everything, or leaving his wife a widow and his children fatherless for him. Like a tireless soldier, her rose to the rank of Commander in Chief, campaign stop after campaign stop. Interview after interview. Conference after conference. Debate after debate. Barack Obama is a man who I admire deeply, and would gladly let make a lasting impression on the minds of youth, especially my own children. Amen.
