Here's Mr StraightTalk for you:
New Ad: Obama says, "Iran does not pose a serious threat to us."
Here is Obama actual quote: "Strong countries and strong Presidents talk to their adversaries. That's what Kennedy did with Khrushchev. That's what Reagan did with Gorbachev. That's what Nixon did with Mao. I mean think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela -- these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us. And yet we were willing to talk to the Soviet Union at the time when they were saying we're going to wipe you off the planet."
He's John McCain, and he approved that message.
(Sidebar for the tinfoil beanie crew: Ask Ollie North why he hasn't been back to the Naval Academy since the Iran-Contra scandal. Answer: because his graduating class voted to silence him, the standard punishment for breaking Navy's Honor Code. McCain's danger-close to putting himself in the same position. )

Obama didn't think Iraq posed a serious threat to us either. And he was right.
Its surprising that the mccain campaign would want to remind people how right Obama was on war, and how wrong mccain was. but I am also surprised that he is running a worse campaign than hillary. I thought he was experienced. Yet all he talks about is obama.

I am not, at all, a McCain supporter. Read my blog, I've been working on the Obama campaign since Feb, 2007, attended my first meeting the week he announced. (and its Julia, not Julie).
I don't know how you could have misread my comment so bad, I said it was surprised McCain would discussion Obama not wanting to go into Iran, since it makes people realize Obama didn't want to go into Iraq either (and he was right about that).
Please be more careful when you read and don't post negative things towards stanch Obama supporters.

McCain's supporters in the media are already trying to shed a bad light on the staging (columns) at the speech podium. I think Obama should definitely leave them speechless by having decades of experience with him on top of those "columns" (huge pics of roadsetting Democratic Forefathers & a couple of outstanding world leaders) from this era, i.e., Kennedys, Martin Luther King, Mandela, Mother Teresa, etc.
It's time to embrace being able to bring crowds, that's a necessary thing for a leader, rather than let McCain's people try to intimidate him into not doing this (because them it would be obviously that McCain will never be able to do this. Nobody in this world can associate him being an elitist with his poor upbringing. It's already indefensible.

Honestly I think Hill could have done better that what she did. I feel she talked too much about herself and not enough about Obama and why he's ready to be Pres now. The voters that he was hoping to win over last evening at the DNC and all over america needed to hear those EXACT words from her. If Bill does not bring this home tonight and make it very clear, I think we're not better off than before the Clintons "endorsements." I think judging bythe look on Michelle Obama's face last night she feels the same as I. She did not look happy, she did not look pleased, she looked worried that the clintons might do just what they did and they did harm Obama.

Zizi,
It's people like you that make this country great.
We all have our self interests, and it's great to see people willing to focus on our shared interests and common good for the good of the country.
I hope we are able to forge our way through the major global threats we are facing; not only people wanting to kill us, but global economic competition, our aging population and health care issues, and the world becoming less hospitable for human life in general.
I'm saddended many times a day by the ease in which our opponents cast trivial insignificant issues as important while wishing to continue the mistakes of past administrations, particularly the last 8 years. Bush and McCain have had their chance to solve these problems, and failed. There is a saying that goes "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". It is insanity to think we can solve our nation's problems by doing the same thing that created them. It is time we acknowledge as a country we need a new approach.
I hold hope that we as a country will make the right choice and elect Obama to be at the forefront of our commitment to address these problems with a smarter approach, backed by the genuine support of Americans for the good our our country.

I think she made it very clear. Unfortunately, she has some supporters who just will not listen to reason, not even from her. By this point, it's not even that she's leading them- it's more like they are obsessively stalking her and misread everything she says to mean what they want to hear.
The question is whether there are actually enough of them to hand the election to McCain.
They seem to think that if that happens, then Hillary will return in 2012 and all of us Obama supporters will be oh-so-sorry for making them throw that temper tantrum and ruin everything, and that we'll all vote for Hillary. Yeah right.
Realistically, she could still eventually get elected- maybe if she served in Obama's cabinet, and ran in 2016. My worry is that PUMA's behavior could not only jeopardize Hillary's future, but that the memory could cast a shadow on future female candidates, as "proof" that women are overly-hormonal, ruled by emotions, and instead of following the logical rules of the electoral system, they will cry and stomp their feet and throw temper tantrums if they don't get their own way. All of that behavior is very familiar to me, because I have a 3 year old daughter, Lucy. She says she wants to be president someday, and I'm grateful to Hillary for making that dream seem possible. I don't want PUMA to destroy the possibilities for all the 3 year girls by acting like a bunch of 3 year old girls.

Sen. HRC gave a very powerful speech last night. Even after that speech some her supporters will not vote for Obama which is pretty sad. I think they are either very selfish or not voting on racial basis but hiding behind the Hillary Clinton Support Banner. Sen. JM never supported women rights, civil rights and common people issues. So how a democrat with a right mind will support JM, which is beyond me.
Further more I know some AA people are supporting JM. I can say they are also selfish because JM never supported civil right movements. These people have conveniently forgotten about the sacrifice made by the previous generation in blood and slavery. I am an Asian became a naturalized citizen and when we took the oath, the Judge who administered oath gave a pep talk reminding us not to forget our culture and heritage. For a moment think about China where the people and culture is very homogenous, and I think it is pretty boring. Because of the diversity this country is very colorful and powerful. We can experience each others culture without fear. So never forget your culture and heritage which is beautiful.
Why the journalists except Keith Obelmann spend most of their time on negativity than the positive aspects. Is that how they were trained when they studied journalism?

I think the bloggers and supporters can help our outcome in November by this day forward remaining focused on the issues. We no longer have to defend Obama. Let's talk about who's for the poor and middle class and who's not. Let's talk about how McCain's supporters are seeing the Kennedys and Martin L King's dreams come full circle and now we are going to cross the bridge that they have built. Let's even ease the feelings of selfish Bill because despite his fault, when we needed him in this country, he came through. Let's not lose focus. Let's not buy into the media that are obviously McCain supporters. Let's talk Kennedys, Martin L King and Barack Obama.

I totally agree with you on this. Kucinich as the best, followed by the good Governor from Montana. These two gentlemen had POLICY POWER but Sillary had CELEBRITY power and DID NOT SEAL THE SEAL for her followers. I say 'followers' because many who supported her are now supporting Senators Obama/Biden (splendid - they got it) but many of her die-hard followers are sadly missing the forest for the trees.
What I got from her speech was the WOMEN factor and the HISTORY-MAKING factor for many of her followers. Women's issues are always important in this complex fabric called LIFE, but ought not to be used for personal ambition at the expense of others. Some of us seem to have this romantic view of why she should be the presumptive nominee instead of Senator Obama. The American people have spoken!
From the very beginning, Senator Obama has always maintained that these elections were not about him; they never were or ever will be. Sadly, Sillary's followers want to continue to make it about her/them AND are asking (seemingly) for Senator Obama to fall to his knees and beg for their support. First, she had to 'convince' them that he is the better choice (which must be difficult after her own very negative attacks against him)and now some of them are saying BO has to 'convince' them. Huh? Don't they get it? Haven't they been listening?
Facts are a curious thing, y'all.

Yes, there may be a few, but even the ones they have managed to find and put on air, (except for that Debra woman) are saying that in November they will look out for their households and children.
What you are not hearing on McCain supported media is that soooo many Republicans are supporting Obama, and every now and then they are forced to show the polls with Obama way ahead with Independents.

I listen to everyone regardless of their opposing views (McCain supporters included) but that does not mean I agree with them or want to repeat their rhetoric. Despite our own viewpoints of the Democratic nomination process and all its complexities, we are mindful that the world also cares about having a president we can all trust.

Q of age/experience of Barack Obama???
Barack Obama served two terms in the Illinois Senate first, before being elected to National.
Obama is a year older now than was Bill Clinton when he was sworn in, older than Jack Kennedy was, and older by 4+ years than was Teddy Roosevelt.
He didn't go straight to law School directly after graduating college... First he worked three years on the South Side of Chicago, in actual slum conditions, with actual down-&-out folks needing jobs. Then realizing he could only do so much as an individual; that a powerful position could get him to a place he would better able to help many more, so he then went on to Harvard and earned a law degree.
St. Paul warned Timothy not to let people put him down because of his youth!
Young people have great ideas, and instead of waiting until all the enthusiasm is squashed, let's elect a man with a CLEAR VISION of the future!

The Republicans want you to think he has no experience. They discount the numerous years he had in the Illinois legislature.
He led the charge for reforming the death penalty issues we had (anyone recall that we had over a dozen people on death row that were innocent?), KIDS healthcare- every child in IL can have healthcare through that program...
That is not all. He did ALOT. Much more happens on a state level than federal in reality.

Speaking of fundraising, we need to get over it and start helping out with Hillary's debt. I know, I've heard the counter arguments before. "She should have dropped out earlier" and so on. It would go a long way to help unify the crew, don't you think?
Again don't troll me out. I'm just sayin. I'm beginning to sound like a broken record on this issue. We really don't have much time to make an impact. We have to start in house this week before the real campaign starts.

Also, in an earlier article that Drudge linked, not the ABC website one but another one, the columns are reminiscent of the white house columns or the columns of the capitol building. These ejits don't realize that the capitol, white house, and some of the memorials in DC are based on the classic roman/greek designs.
The FF went back to greece and rome for their inspiration, particularly rome and the roman republic. They wanted the capitol of the US to reflect republican ideals of greek and roman democracy.
I have no problem at all with Obama standing in front of some sort of Greco-Roman structure resembling half the buildings in Washington D.C. These reporters have to get a life. Sheeesh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, in Greek/Roman society temples and government buildings existed together and looked similar. The Greeks and Romans had their pantheon of gods and they still believed in democracy. there really was no separation of 'church' and 'state' in Greek/Roman society. In fact, the early Christians were persecuted because they would not worship the emperor as god and didn't acknowlege the pantheon of various state gods. But I don't think the reporters are that well educated in their ancient Greek and Rome classical history. The columns are associated with temples and buildings of states, but you're right, they're associated wiht the birthplaces of western democracy, Athens and Rome. Sigh!
Obama is not going for the god effect.

It takes my breath away that such distractions work.
We have 4100+ dead in Iraq, 20K+ wounded and trying to get back their lives, 47 Million not knowing how to see a doctor, our banks failing, China having us bow to them as they own us, Oil Sheiks doing the same, fear of a major storm with distrust of a gov response, an education system ranking in the lowest among superpowers, starving children & elderly within our own shores, crumbling roads, bridges, levees, depleted ozone layer, clean water: what did I leave out?
If people are more moved by architectural columns, type of lettuce, tea vs coffee, flag pins, middle names, and preachers, than the above; may God truly have mercy on us.
If Karl Rove rules, were have already lost humanity.

Watch the Democratic convention coverage with your own thoughts and those of your friends and loved ones watching with you. Do you need someone to tell you what you just heard or saw? We don't think so either!
Tune into CSpan for "Coverage for those who can think for themselves!"

Or anything along these lines but urging folks to watch the convention on something besides MSM - send to all your email contacts!

I am terribly disappointed that some posters on a previous thread feel the need to bring the divisiveness and lies of the pundits back here to this blog. By bring it back here they are causing divisions within the blog and the party and convinsing anyone looking in that the Democratic Party is split. Remember together we stand, divided we fall and divided is just what the pundits want. If you don't like what the pundits are saying get on their blogs and phone in shows and correct the lies. Defend Obama and the Democratic Party out there but don't bring it back here and divide us. I totally agree with what Suzanne from Jupiter ( I think it was Jupiter) posted on that previos thread ( 2 threads back).
I think that the convention speakers are gradually building up the momentum so that the momentum will peak at the right time. They are gradually building up the attacks on McCain but first they want to get the positive message out. So hold off on your criticism until the convention is over. The leaders do know what they are doing and have as much or more at stake in this than the average back seat critic does.
We are United and we will remain United. Go Obama/Biden. YES WE CAN. Yes WE CAN.

While the blue collar workers try to assess Obama as their working class hero, I can't help but wonder what they think their option is with McCain, as it appears obvious to anyone, the Republicans have throttled the American Dream, demoralized our Country to the rest of the world, shipped jobs out to the highest bidder, sided with corporate conglomerates that no longer have addresses on Wall Street, what is left to scrutinize Obama about? Clearly, Obama has already proven he lives above that threshhold, however, we continue to read in the press that the blue collar Americans are "hesitant" to run with Obama/Biden. We are going to have rocky times no matter who is in the White House because the economic collapse we see on the horizon has been on hold for 5 years now and even Wall Street's sleight of hand isn't agile enough to keep juggling the finances. They have fallen. Who picks up the pieces is the bigger question. Bush is wanted as a war criminal in many countries around the world. Is that incredible enough to make a change?

Comic rips media's false sense of urgency
"It is a telling media milepost as political convention TV coverage unfolds over the next two weeks: Jon Stewart is now the dean of commercial network political convention anchors. The old guard is either retired, deceased or disgraced.
His message: Stop letting the 24-hour cable networks set the nation's political agenda."
"We've fallen into this false sense of urgency that they create," Stewart said. "That idea that everything is breaking news and that if you're not watching us, you're going to miss this thing.
"But nothing they're saying is of any import because nobody filters it. (Print reporters) are able to step back for a moment and think. They're not. They're just pointing a camera and saying, 'What do you think that is? I don't know. Let's go to 'The Situation Room.' "

Isn't CSPAN the best???
We can do more than boycott CNN. Join me in sending emails to friends and family and ask them to do the same. If they need commentary let them switch to MSNBC. Atlease we have strong voices like KO,Rahel M., David Shuster and Jonathan Alter.
Who is in to send email and hurt CNN. They need to know they can't mess with a movement.

Joe Biden in action:

Here's an interesting first-person account of Joe Biden's foreign policy knowledge and skills from the former ambassador to Romania:
On the 20-minute drive into the city, he quizzed me on Romanian attitudes, the status of various government leaders and the inside story on Romania’s foreign policy toward Slobodan Milosevic, who was still in power next door in Yugoslavia. Because Biden has known all the major Romanian leaders since the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, the questions were Ph.D. level, not Romania 101. That was remarkable in itself since he is no specialist on Romania; he could do the same, landing in dozens of nations around the world.
In his meetings with President Emil Constantinescu and others, he thanked them sincerely for their support for NATO — and then he drilled right in on Milosevic: How strong did they think he was in Yugoslavia after the war? How did they evaluate the various leaders of the democratic opposition there — whom he asked about name by name, since he knew each of them personally, too. Unlike the Bush administration, which has been accused of tailoring its version of the facts to match its policy, Biden was trying to learn the facts firsthand to figure out what would be the right U.S. policy.

Good job Arnaud, however, I think the white vote for Barack is going to be overwhelming. It already has been.
Also, nobody other than Obama even mentions the other races as voters...the hispanics, asians, and native americans (especially in MI, OH & NC) are going to surprise the fake pollsters.
The questions that are asked in the polls aren't done free of charge so the results are going to look just like the clients of the pollsters want them to turn out. Especially Gallup. Uuugh!

Her speech was very convincing and effective.
She had to talk about herself and her accomplishments so people understand what the stakes are: if HRC supporters vote for JM, that means all the hard work she did in the past 35 years would suffer a severe setback by the JM administration.
HRC was correct in asking, "Were you supporting me or my work?"
I think we should use some clips of HRC last night (if permissible) for a new ad to foster party unity.

Whoever was just on CNN countering GOP attack dog Sanchez did a pretty good job. It forced CNN to terminate the discussion.
My only regret is that he didn't pursue countering Sanchez earlier and allowed her to interupt him a few times and by the time he finally responded CNN wanted to move on. We need to make these appearances a lose-lose-lose situation rather than a win for the GOP and a win for the media. and a lose for Obama. When it becomes completely nonproductive we will effectively counter the media hosted GOP attacks and only then will the media and the GOP address their coverage (however only to the extent that they can get the lose-lose-lose situation to end).
So although he did a good job, he allowed attacks to go unanswered. Our surrogates don't have to be nice, nor should they make the burden fall on Obama to address these accusations and the silly narratives that the GOP paints and the media allows.
So keep doing what we are doing, but step it up a few notches. The first GOP attack mandates that we negate further civil discussion, it's not so much taking the low road as refusing to allow underhanded smears to work.
After repeatedly demonstrating that the GOP attacks will mean chaos each and every time we will discourage that behavior. Otherwise we enable it and encourage it.

McCain seems to not be putting his government first and more interested in winning the election than in his 'straight talk express'.
The article, which discusses the GOP platform (which obvioulsy McCain campaign has significant input to) suggests that McCain is being a bit deceitful in his position on drilling. An except below:
McCain opposes drilling in that protected land, and some committee members said they would rather bring him around on the issue once he's in the White House than widen their disagreement now.
Link
So what we have is acknowledgement that the GOP is intent on saying one thing before the election to get elected, and then another once in office. I suppose that's what the GOP means by 'putting the country first'?

I sure wish I perceived Hillary's "endorsement" the same way almost everyone I've spoken with today does. But I just cannot. Something is bothering me about her speech and "endorsement".
She "endorsed" a man about whom she seemed to have had no personal knowledge despite the fact that she has known him nearly four years now. Could she not have related an incident during which they were working together and she saw his
keen intellect, his warm heart, his love for his wife and children? Nothing?
Could she not have even joked about some of the harsher things she said about Barack during thed campaign while reserving kind words for her friend John McCain, such as who had passed the Commander-in-Chief test, or who would bring a lifetime of experience to the presidency vs wgho would bring a speech one made in 2002. Nothing?
All I could get out of her speech was that she wanted you to vote for him because he believes in universal health care, bringing the troops home from Iraq, fossil fuel independence, etc. Really? Then why is James Carville so hostile? Why did Bill Clinton stop applauding last night when she mentioned Barack's name and resumed as soon as she moved on.
Hillary did not endorse Barack Obama. She endorsed the generic Democratic candidate. In 2012, she intends to place a face on that candidate, one of the faces of Hillary Rodham Clinton. Please HQ, do not be fooled!
