Me too.
On another note:
John McCain was wrong on Katrina too. Don't let him get away with it.
The liberal group Progressive Accountability planned to try to embarrass Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Friday for his response to the Katrina strike, claiming his was the 40th senator to visit New Orleans afterwards.
“We will be making sure everyone knows it is not just Bush who has a Katrina problem,” said the group’s Eddie Vale. “McCain was eating birthday cake with Bush after the levees broke. And then he voted against oversight, against medicaid for victims, and against unemployment benefits for victims.”

I hope and pray that the following (the first part of Robert's link) does not happen. But if it does, I believe that's called Mother Nature's revenge.
"Planners of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul held emergency conversations Wednesday about what to do if a tropical storm continues on its track as a potential Category 3 hurricane threatening New Orleans.
Gustav’s projected path suggests possible landfall on the convention’s opening day — Labor Day.
The storm could threaten everything from President Bush’s Monday night address to the broader Republican message of effective government management.
Local officials fear a Katrina II — a rerun of the storm that ravished New Orleans and badly damaged Bush’s image."

Remember that so-called man of God that wanted people to pray for rain for today in Denver?
Yet, there would be no poetic justice in the people of New Orleans being hit again, absolutely nothing. I hope and pray that will NOT occur-- those people have sacrificed and endured ENOUGH, and what is more, if the worst did happen, they would have to endure 4 more months of next to NOTHING being done to help them by FEMA and our current administration AGAIN until President Obama is sworn into office in January. PLEASE LET NOTHING MORE HAPPEN TO NEW ORLEANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please everyone include the City of New Orleans, of Jazz and Mardi Gras, of Gumbo and Jambalaya, of great people and historic beauty, in your thoughts and prayers this coming week.

Part of being an American, part of being a caring human being, demands that we all do what we can to limit the impact of Gustuv on not only New Orleans and the US, but all the countries that have been and will be affected. We must do all we can to be prepared and have a first rate response to the storm, despite being a benefit to McCain and the GOP.
At the appropriate time we can and should definately discuss the policy differencesthat made hurricane Katrina such a unmitigated disaster. The policies of Bush/Mcain will position our country to repeat the dismal results of Katrina.
Our opposition is of course hoping that Gustuv does little harm and minimum disruption to their convention, or to New Orleans. However I suspect that the Bush/McCain policies have had limited concern for the humanity aspect, while focusing on the political and big oil concerns. Longer range policies also are to blame. The idea that we don't have to change our lifestyle because of global warming is simply not an answer. As we see with these storm intensities, our lives ARE already changed by global warming. We have more evacuations, bigger losses, more lost jobs etc. as a result of these storms. The argument that we won't have to impact our lifestyle is patently false; we can either address global warming voluntarily or have mother nature exact her own measures. The Bush/McCain approach of the putting our head in the sand is nothing new and while people like the easy answers that Bush/McCain suggest, the real answer is going to take hard work and tough choices. Time and time again we see fad diet plans that promise 'no exercise'. Time and time again people expect a magic pill to solve our problems. It is comforting and romantic to think our problems can be solved easily and without effort. Bush and McCain's easy clear cut answers pander to this human craving. Nothing new here of course.
I believe that our opposition does not share our ethical values and as a result doesn't always put our country first. we need to do so because it's the right thing to do. I hope we all do all we can to make this storm have a little impact as possible.
By electing Obama we can begin the hard work ahead with global warming.
Yes we can.

People sometimes take God for granted. The Republicans asked God to do something bad - to make it rain on today. My cousin is in Denver for the Convention and she told me the weather is great today. Gustav is going to be on time for the Republican Convention - taking the AIR TIME AWAY FROM THEM. When we pray, we should pray for the good of ALL PEOPLE.

Exceptional. I'm glad to be sharing these moments with all of you too. It is truly wonderful to discover that despite my cynicism of just a little over one year ago, most of us are not satisfied with the status quo of the last 7 1/2 years, most of us are NOT satisfied with our long festering problems remaining unaddressed and unsolved, and most of us want to see this Country THRIVE for everyone again! Tonight's historical event will be like no other seen in my lifetime. Barack Obama formally accepts the democratic nomination for the Presidency of the United States of America.
My great-grandparents, grandparents and parents have sacrificed so much for this day to actually come true. And my children will be the beneficary of all their blood, sweat and tears.
This is truly a day that the Lord has made and I am glad to be in it!
Excerpts from Dr. King's speech: "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
"This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring."
"And if America is to be a great nation this must become true."
My God, bloggers. It lives!!! It lives in me, it lives in my children and I hope it lives in you!
Dr. King said " I have a Dream"
Michelle on Monday said, "The Dream lives"
Barack Obama - I am the Dream and the Dream lives in me!!
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!!
I am so full of joy, I feeling like shouting!!!
Only in America can this be possible!
Don't forget to send up your prayers and positive thought out to them in Denver.

Great work being the change in KY, Carey. I hope you, and all our 50 states, get offices sooner rather than later.
you probably already know this, but the blueprint is downloadable under the issues tab.
Don't know about other states, but I would expect it's the same (seeing as IA is a swing state, which will go solidly blue if we all do our part!), but our offices don't have materials to give out. Sure, we were spoiled before the caucuses, but nothing since then, unless we've been lucky enough to have a visit from Barack (when we get rally signs). I have kicked myself that I left my yard sign at my caucus site, cleaned up the whole inside (which I sent on to NE and other states), but forgot the yard signs outside! Hope to get one soon.

I heard the audio from this McHavenoshame comment earlier but this one has video to boot. It is priceless.
This is apparently how an out of touch/elitist owner of 8 homes thinks.
Since he has apparently never been out in the workforce he must not realize that there aren't many $50/hour jobs out there to scoff at.
Let's see at $50/hour, that is $400/day, $2000/week, $8000/month totaling $96,000 a year.
To McHavenoshame this may seem like chicken feed (because it wouldn't pay his AMEX bill for one month) but I bet many working class folks would disagree.
I also love how McHavenoshame fumbles all over himself (and the mic) when the crowd starts grumbling about his comment.

Picking lettuce -- or harvesting almost anything-- is back-breaking work, but if the lettuce producers actually paid $50/hour (which they do NOT do-- $50/hour is NOT even close to the average pay for that kind of work) Americans would be lined up around the block to take the work.
What does he mean? "You can't do it." That is ONE ugly thing to say. I have not picked a ton of lettuce in my life, but I have picked other crops, I have shucked corn-- and one of my most beautiful toddler memories, is me sitting at twilight while the wheat is flowing all around me. (My mom thinks it is rather funny that I remember that as such a beautiful thing, but it was, I can still see the light flashing on the wheat as it fell, and it was golden). My grandfather and grandmother, God rest their souls, harvested crops during harvest season until their hands were torn and bloody. I know that they were made of powerful stuff and I have never had to work as hard as they did in my own life, yet $50/hour would be a powerful incentive were I out of work, with children to feed and bills to pay.
What in the world was Senator McCain thinking? That was one insulting to ALL OF US diatribe!

The Time magazine cover a blatant-malicious attack on Barack Obama:

Using their front cover the TIME magazine creates an image that presents a very distorted (intentional) image in their effort (Corporate media) to impress a negative effect on those who view it...
This monster needs to be bankrupted and put out of business. An important aspect of this campaign is to end the corporate hold on the election process.

Getting Democrats registered to vote is an effort that can help deliver victory for us in November.
Please encourage people to visit the new VOTE FOR CHANGE website
Link
At this site people will be able to: find out if they are registered to vote; get registered to vote; apply to vote absentee; plus find their early vote location.
You can hand out slips of paper to people printed with the VOTE FOR CHANGE web address. Or you can find voter registration forms to print out for each state at the Board of Elections links below. You’ll also find contact information at these sites so you can call and ask your Board about voter registration requirements.
Registering can be a pretty quick and simple process. It literally takes me about two minutes to get a registration form completed. I keep a stack of registration forms with me and just in going about my day, I have been able to register sales clerks, waiters, people at sporting events, and even the plumber who was fixing our faucet!
Again, if you’re going to try to register voters, be sure to find out registration requirements for your area and also please remind people about the IMPORTANCE OF BRINGING PROPER I.D. WITH A CORRECT ADDRESS ON VOTING DAY. Thank you.

40 years ago today, I came in from painting my parents' house to watch, with my liberal mother and conservative father, Dr. King's speech. It has the same effect on me today as it did then. I watch it at least two or three times a year. I watched it again this morning.
Dr. King would have been surprised by Senator Obama's nomination and yet not surprised. He knew how far we needed to go but he always was the optimist about America.
And he agreed with this: President Lyndon Johnson showed how politicians with little to gain but who are committed to the right thing can change our nation. The Voting Rights Act did just that. It validated our Constitution; it undermined govenmental bias; it cost the Democratic Party the South even until today. Johnson knew it was the right thing to do; so that Texan led on the issue, along with great civil rights leaders, some here, some gone but not forgotten. Johnson minced no words about the moral failing of our nation. Democrats and Republicans rallied all over the nation to his call for justice.
To read more about President Johnson's marvelous stand, see today's New York Times article by his biographer, Robert Caro:

Keynote Address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention
July 27, 2004
On behalf of the great state of Illinois, crossroads of a nation, land of Lincoln, let me express my deep gratitude for the privilege of addressing this convention. Tonight is a particular honor for me because, let's face it, my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely. My father was a foreign student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya. He grew up herding goats, went to school in a tin-roof shack. His father, my grandfather, was a cook, a domestic servant.
But my grandfather had larger dreams for his son. Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place: America, which stood as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before. While studying here, my father met my mother. She was born in a town on the other side of the world, in Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs and farms through most of the Depression. The day after Pearl Harbor he signed up for duty, joined Patton's army and marched across Europe. Back home, my grandmother raised their baby and went to work on a bomber assembly line. After the war, they studied on the GI Bill, bought a house through FHA, and moved west in search of opportunity.

And they, too, had big dreams for their daughter, a common dream, born of two continents. My parents shared not only an improbable love; they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation. They would give me an African name, Barack, or "blessed," believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success. They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren't rich, because in a generous America you don't have to be rich to achieve your potential. They are both passed away now. Yet, I know that, on this night, they look down on me with pride.
I stand here today, grateful for the diversity of my heritage, aware that my parents' dreams live on in my precious daughters. I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is my story even possible. Tonight, we gather to affirm the greatness of our nation, not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy. Our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago, "We hold these truths to he self-evident, that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
That is the true genius of America, a faith in the simple dreams of its people, the insistence on small miracles. That we can tuck in our children at night and know they are fed and clothed and safe from harm. That we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door. That we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe or hiring somebody's son. That we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution, and that our votes will he counted - or at least, most of the time.

This year, in this election, we are called to reaffirm our values and commitments, to hold them against a hard reality and see how we are measuring up, to the legacy of our forbearers, and the promise of future generations. And fellow Americans - Democrats, Republicans, Independents - I say to you tonight: we have more work to do. More to do for the workers I met in Galesburg, Illinois, who are losing their union jobs at the Maytag plant that's moving to Mexico, and now are having to compete with their own children for jobs that pay seven bucks an hour. More to do for the father I met who was losing his job and choking back tears, wondering how he would pay $4,500 a month for the drugs his son needs without the health benefits he counted on. More to do for the young woman in East St. Louis, and thousands more like her, who has the grades, has the drive, has the will, but doesn't have the money to go to college.
Don't get me wrong. The people I meet in small towns and big cities, in diners and office parks, they don't expect government to solve all their problems. They know they have to work hard to get ahead and they want to. Go into the collar counties around Chicago, and people will tell you they don't want their tax money wasted by a welfare agency or the Pentagon. Go into any inner city neighborhood, and folks will tell you that government alone can't teach kids to learn. They know that parents have to parent, that children can't achieve unless we raise their expectations and turn off the television sets and eradicate the slander that says a black youth with a book is acting white. No, people don't expect government to solve all their problems. But they sense, deep in their bones, that with just a change in priorities, we can make sure that every child in America has a decent shot at life, and that the doors of opportunity remain open to all. They know we can do better. And they want that choice.

A while back, I met a young man named Shamus at the VFW Hall in East Moline, Illinois. He was a good-looking kid, six-two or six-three, clear-eyed, with an easy smile. He told me he'd joined the Marines and was heading to Iraq the following week. As I listened to him explain why he'd enlisted, his absolute faith in our country and its leaders, his devotion to duty and service, I thought this young man was all any of us might hope for in a child. But then I asked myself: Are we serving Shamus as well as he was serving us? I thought of more than 900 service men and women, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, friends and neighbors, who will not be returning to their hometowns. I thought of families I had met who were struggling to get by without a loved one's full income, or whose loved ones had returned with a limb missing or with nerves shattered, but who still lacked long-term health benefits because they were reservists. When we send our young men and women into harm's way, we have a solemn obligation not to fudge the numbers or shade the truth about why they're going, to care for their families while they're gone, to tend to the soldiers upon their return, and to never ever go to war without enough troops to win the war, secure the peace, and earn the respect of the world.
Now let me be clear. We have real enemies in the world. These enemies must be found. They must be pursued and they must be defeated. John Kerry knows this. And just as Lieutenant Kerry did not hesitate to risk his life to protect the men who served with him in Vietnam, President Kerry will not hesitate one moment to use our military might to keep America safe and secure. John Kerry believes in America. And he knows it's not enough for just some of us to prosper. For alongside our famous individualism, there's another ingredient in the American saga.

In this election, we offer that choice. Our party has chosen a man to lead us who embodies the best this country has to offer. That man is John Kerry. John Kerry understands the ideals of community, faith, and sacrifice, because they've defined his life. From his heroic service in Vietnam to his years as prosecutor and lieutenant governor, through two decades in the United States Senate, he has devoted himself to this country. Again and again, we've seen him make tough choices when easier ones were available. His values and his record affirm what is best in us.
John Kerry believes in an America where hard work is rewarded. So instead of offering tax breaks to companies shipping jobs overseas, he'll offer them to companies creating jobs here at home. John Kerry believes in an America where all Americans can afford the same health coverage our politicians in Washington have for themselves. John Kerry believes in energy independence, so we aren't held hostage to the profits of oil companies or the sabotage of foreign oil fields. John Kerry believes in the constitutional freedoms that have made our country the envy of the world, and he will never sacrifice our basic liberties nor use faith as a wedge to divide us. And John Kerry believes that in a dangerous world, war must be an option, but it should never he the first option.

A belief that we are connected as one people. If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief - I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper - that makes this country work. It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family. "E pluribus unum." Out of many, one.
Yet even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America - there's the United States of America. There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America. The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and have gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported it. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

In the end, that's what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope? John Kerry calls on us to hope. John Edwards calls on us to hope. I'm not talking about blind optimism here - the almost willful ignorance that thinks unemployment will go away if we just don't talk about it, or the health care crisis will solve itself if we just ignore it. No, I'm talking about something more substantial. It's the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs; the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores; the hope of a young naval lieutenant bravely patrolling the Mekong Delta; the hope of a millworker's son who dares to defy the odds; the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too. The audacity of hope!
In the end, that is God's greatest gift to us, the bedrock of this nation; the belief in things not seen; the belief that there are better days ahead. I believe we can give our middle class relief and provide working families with a road to opportunity. I believe we can provide jobs to the jobless, homes to the homeless, and reclaim young people in cities across America from violence and despair. I believe that as we stand on the crossroads of history, we can make the right choices, and meet the challenges that face us. America!
Tonight, if you feel the same energy I do, the same urgency I do, the same passion I do, the same hopefulness I do - if we do what we must do, then I have no doubt that all across the country, from Florida to Oregon, from Washington to Maine, the people will rise up in November, and John Kerry will be sworn in as president, and John Edwards will be sworn in as vice president, and this country will reclaim its promise, and out of this long political darkness a brighter day will come. Thank you and God bless you.

According to tax records, Obama and his wife made charitable contributions of $10,772 total from 2000-2004 on joint earnings of $1.2 million total for the same five years combined. That’s less than one percent to “the least of these” or to support the work of their church.
The Obamas’ gifts to charity jumped for 2005-2006 to $137,622 total, or over 5 percent of $2.6 million total income earned for the two years combined (the rise in income came mainly from Obama’s book sales). But it doesn’t seem to show generosity to charitable causes nor commitment to the ministries of their congregation (a tithe is 10 percent).

We tithe 10% of our gross income, but we gave that money to God we are not trying to get a portion of that back from uncle sam? Do you think the Obama's put some of their deductions, but no others?
Glad to hear you tithe off of your gross. My wife and I do the same. Of course I do wish that I received the gross in my bank account instead of having a heavy handed government force my company to withhold.
I do not give my money to receive the money back. However, I do claim it as a deduction. I am not sure that God cares either way, but you could get the money back and use it to further God's kingdom. He generally does not receive credit for the things that government does.

Sorry, but I don't like the article, written by a baptist church. It's tendencious. It's not just a question of %.
A tithe is 10 % ? Yes, in the Bible. But, for example, the Bible don't say if it's after or before taxes. And at the time the social and economical context was different. It's not a question of mathematics.
If they have very few, people can give 1% and be very generous. If you have a lot, may be 10 % is not much. And it also depends of your charges.
McCain is married to a heiress, and they say they don't know what she gives...
And if you help your family, it's not a donation, but it's a good use of your money...
Etc... etc...
There is a context to take in consideration.
For me, no doubt that Barack and Michelle thought to these questions, and the most important is that they do something.
I don't like the "judgment" of the article.

When the Bible was written taxes were not withheld, they were collected - thus the stories about the tax collectors. The fact that a heavy-handed government requires companies to withhold taxes makes net/gross an issue. When the Bible was written, the tithe was of the first fruits, before taxes had been paid.
Regarding Obama, do you think the $10,772 was generous?
You are right, the question is not a question of percentage. In fact as some would argue, in light of what Jesus has done why would we stop at 10%?
What does it say about someone who is very willing to be generous with other people's money but has not demonstrated that same generosity with his own money?

It couldn't be said any better!!
More and more people are signing up everyday and from those who have already stated amounts pledged we are going to make some noise!!!!
but this is just the tip of the ObamaNation iceberg. We need you all to spread the word at the local offices to friend and fellow supporter and anyone you see who is behind this campaign.
So please sign up and everyone help me spread the word about this magical moment and what we want to do to honor it.
I know in my heart that Dr King; Correta; people like Rosa Parks; Medgar Evers, those little girls from Birmingham; The Freedom Riders who gave their lives in Mississippi and so, so many more, will be looking down on us with tears of joy for what we have accomplished as a people and as a Nation. Let’s make them even more proud.
We may not be in the stadium, but WE CAN make our voices heard, in heaven and on earth at that moment
Come on ObamaNation!!!!

In 1948, Hubert Humphrey, the mayor of Minneapolis, later US Senator and Vice Presdient of the United States, called the Democratic Party to act forcefully on civil rights. His battle within the Party Convention led to the walkout of hundreds of Southern delgates, and a third party campaign by Senator Strom Thurmond, then a Democrat. The Democrats still won that election led by Harry Truman.
TThis is part of what Humphrey said then:
"Friends, delegates, I do not believe that there can be any compromise on the guarantees of
the civil rights which we have mentioned in the minority report. In spite of my desire for unanimous agreement on the entire platform, in spite of my desire to see everybody here in honest and unanimous agreement, there are some matters which I think must be stated clearly and without qualification. There can be no hedging the
newspaper headlines are wrong. There will be no hedging, and there will be no watering down if
you please of the instruments and the principals of the civil rights program.
To those who say, my friends, to those who say that we are rushing this issue of civil rights,
I say to them we are 172 years late. To those who say who say that this civil rights program is an infringement on states’ rights, I say this: The time has arrived in America for the Democratic party to get out of the shadow of states' rights and to walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights. People human beings this
is the issue of the 20th century. People of all kinds all sorts of people and these people are looking to America for leadership, and they’re looking to America for precept and example."
Hubert Humphrey was a great American and his life-long efforts have helped lead us to this wonderful day.

I think Barack Obama has the BEST experience of any candidate in a long time.
Help me out here.
1. When he takes the Oath of Office in January, #44 will swear to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. Who better to carry out this sacred trust than a scholar who CHOSE to TEACH the constitution for 12 years at one of the greatest law schools in the world? Barack Obama could have made ten times as much money working at some prestigious law firm. He was offered jobs from Wall Street to Washington, but he turned them down.

My Harrisburg, PA Patriot News also had great Headlines and inside coverage. It discusses how Obama and McCain will be in Western PA Friday/Saturday.
Check out coverage and the best Electoral Map from the Votemaster:
Link
Nevada has turned blue along with Colorado, giving Obama a 278-247 lead with VA tied and FL and OH on the verge of turning blue.
If Obama wins all the Kerry states (NH and MI are probably the only ones with a chance for McCain) and you add on IA and NM (now firmly Democratic), then Obama has 264 electoral votes.
For McCain to win, he has to hold ALL 6 of the following states:
NV, CO, VA, OH, FL and MO. Therefore, Obama has 5-6 pathways to victory.
If Obama wins NV for a 269 tie, then it goes to the House and goes state-by-state. I asked the Votemaster to do a analysis of that situation.
He will present the results next week.

This is an awesome article written in 2005 about this phenomenon. We must change this now before it's too late!
"But after 1970, the real earning power of male wages—and I focus here on men, for they are the closer fit to the profile of the chauffeur—stopped rising. Their dream was linked, it turned out, to jobs in an industrial sector that been automated out or outsourced abroad. Their old union-protected, high-wage, blue-collar jobs began to disappear as new nonunion, low-wage, service-sector jobs appeared. Indeed, the man with a high-school diploma or a few years of college found few new high-opportunity jobs in the much-touted new economy while the vast majority ended up in low-opportunity jobs near the bottom. As jobs in the middle have become harder to find, his earning power has fallen, his benefits have shrunk and his job security has been reduced."

Drudge has a "developing story" that a "leak" will take place around 6:00pm (no wiseguy jokes!) and McCain will announce his victim, oops, I mean running mate! Possibly in the middle of Barack's speech. Ok, here we go and I hope my thought process doesn't offend anybody.
McCain's stated he's running the choice by Cindy? Ok, but who's in charge here? Granted we know who is, but at least keep up appearances!
Next is whom? Hutchinson? Forget about it. McCain's idea of a "position" for women is, excuse the crudity, "Missionary".
Now, it seems that another "leak" has stated that Saturday's event in Washington, PA won't have the actual choice in person until after 7:55pm. Anybody else except Politico pick up on the fact that Joe Lieberman is a "modern" Orthodox Jew and that 25 hours have to pass between sunset on Friday and the end of the Sabbath on Saturday?
Romney's not been heard of either of late, but here goes my take. If it's "Meshugener Joe", the conservative wing of the GOP goes stampeding to the exits. If it's Romney, a goodly protion of the Evangelical wing does likewise (they're not keen on Mormons, to put it mildly). That leaves Pawlenty or Portman. No one's ever heard of Portman outside of Ohio and Pawlenty's been quoted as saying his wife prefers fishing to "Whoopee", so you can imagine just what that's going to bring up.
My main point is, for any historians out there, has there ever been such a scarcity of candidates for Veep who won't send a goodly portion of a party screaming for the exits? A lot of Congressman and Senators are staying away as well. I'll be able to get through a lot of reading next week as the "boob tube" stays in the "off" position. I can't bear to watch!
He's not running it by Cindy. |

...HOW ON EARTH is going from a "stadium to the diner" a hard thing to pull off? Americans go from football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, little-league stadiums to their local diners every day of the year!
Most American's aren't like metropolitan news reporters who spend most of their stadium time in comfy media suites with large LCD screens and even larger Starbucks caddies. "Stadium to Diner" has been the working class equation for decades.

2. Why does it matter that Barack Obama was one of the best and the brightest law students in America, and John McCain was one of the worst students in the military Academy where he barely graduated with a degree in engineering 50 years ago?
John McCain gets irritated when anyone questions authority. He is especially annoyed that Barack Obama would question anything General Petraeus says. He has been taught to believe what he is told. He has never developed higher order thinking skills which require mental agility, flexibility and innovation.
Unlike Barack Obama, McCain does not seem comfortable weighing options and considering alternatives. He repeats the same formulas: DRILL, drill, drill. Bomb, bomb, bomb. He repeats the same jokes, and the same outdated phrases about Islamo-fascism.
He has an incurious mind, which is evidenced by his inability to log on to a computer, something my 90-year-old Aunt Helen has mastered.
We need a president who can apply his acquired knowledge to situations he encounters, and who will use his intelligence and wisdom to guide the country through.

I think we would be making a mistake to talk too much abou the middle class at the expense of the many people who dream of someday being part of the middle class.
In a way, it can be perceived as elitest (by all politicians, Dems and GOP alike) to talk about benefits to the middle class when there are so many that consider 'middle class' as the 'elite'.
So, it's with this caution that I suggest that discussion taylored to the 'middle class' be handled with more care than both the GOP and our party has shown so far.
If Obama is to be successful in connecting to the 'average' voter then he will need to address the huge number of folks that dream of someday being able to get a mortgage to buy a house, or have a car with four good tires and an engine that runs. We need to 'connect' with those that don't have cable, not because they are on estates in the mountains, but simply because they can't afford it.
I'm not suggesting that Obama forego the dwindling middle class, but understand that there are a few subgroups with very different concerns; those in the middle class that are concerned about cutting back on their lifestyle, those that are in the middle class and are slipping into the working poor, and those that are poor that are trying to claw their way into the middle class. All these subgroups need to be addressed.
