My Aunt Dona sent this to her representative this a.m. after trying to send a response to Rep Eric Cantor after his appearance on GMA this a.m. (Cantor's website wouldn't let her post a comment since she's not in his district).
Hi guys:
This morning I was watching Good Morning America and they interviewed Eric Cantor (who apparently is the Republican WHIP). I don't know if you guys saw his comments, but I was appalled by them and by his attitude.
I wanted to send him my thoughts on his comments, but on visiting his website, the effort to contact him directs you to your own Republican representative. In my case, that is Mary Bono. So, I did send her a message. Here is what I wrote to her:
"Dear Mary: I really wanted to direct this comment to Republican WHIP Eric Cantor, but in accessing his website, I was directed to you for my comments.
I listened to Eric Cantor express his opinions this morning regarding President Obama's speech on health care and was just unbelievably disgusted with his attitude. I would like to express that disgust to you (actually I would like to express it to him, but as I said, apparently I can't do that).
Eric Cantor expressed his opinion that a public option would be a horrible thing and that most people are insured and are happy with their insurance. Well, I am one who is not.
I am an individual who, by the grace of God, does have insurance through the HIPAA program. My insurance costs almost $800 a month (which, thankfully, is paid by my boss). If I should lose my job, I could not continue to maintain the insurance coverage and, because of my health history, I cannot get any insurance if I lose my HIPAA coverage.
My wonderful insurance coverage for $800 a month is with a $2,500 deductible and a $6,000 per year ceiling, which is way beyond what I can afford. So even though I have this lovely insurance, if I were to become ill, I could not afford to get the health care because I cannot afford to pay $8,500 a year out of pocket for medical care.
Mr. Cantor indicated that if a public option were to go through, the health care of individuals would be taken out of the hands of the people and out of the hands of the doctor. Is he insane? What world does he live in? Does he not know that health care is already out of the hands of the people and out of the hands of the doctors and currently is in the hands of the insurance companies? The insurance companies decide what treatments are allowed. The insurance companies decide what the treatments will cost. And the treatments cost enormous amounts that with insurance are enormous, but without insurance are about quadrupled and are out of this world!
I am absolutely appalled by the attitude of Mr. Cantor. Obviously he has never had to deal with the fear that he might have to give up living because life isn't something he can afford. Well, some of us face that reality ... that we have to accept death because the cost of health care and the option of life is beyond our means. That is, in my humble opinion, unacceptable.
Two weeks ago I suffered a health issue where I was in so much pain I could not bear it and so I finally gave in and called for an ambulance and had myself taken to the hospital. I was given a shot for the pain, a prescription for Percocet and a CT scan, and sent home. The cost to me was over $1,000. I was able to afford that this time. I am lucky in that regard. I cannot afford that very often.
Last night I felt like I was having another heart attack. I cannot afford another visit to the hospital, and so I filled my cats' food dish with food (so that if I should die, hopefully they would be able to live until someone found me) and I spent many hours in the night and in the morning feeling like my heart was going to burst and feeling like I wasn't going to make it. When I arose in the morning, I took great care in trying to prepare for another day at work. I took my Excedrin (for my heart) and I took one of my few remaining Propanolols in the hopes that would help. And I slowly made my way through the morning rituals in dressing and preparing for work. And I was okay. But I didn't know if I would be.
Since I cannot express my thoughts to Mr. Cantor, I would appreciate it if you would share them with him. And, Mary, I know that you have expressed opinions that you think a public option is a bad thing. I would appreciate it if you would think about what some of us are dealing with every single day of our lives.
Best regards,
Dona Richardson"
Anyway, just thought I'd share that with you.
Love you all!
Dona
