I'm really hoping that Obama gets enough superdelegates over the next two weeks that he hits 2025 delegates total on May 20th...that way he wins it via an Oregon win rather than due to some superdelegate's endorsement.

I think they have some sort of idea of how many he will get from the remaining states and then they will let the superdelegate count set at a certain number, so that the voters will make the final 2025.

I agree Laura - Today Axelrod said the nomination will be clear very soon. Checkmate has been in the works for some time -- only two more moves (trickle of SDs to equal the number that gets us about 1980-ish......., then final move on May 20th by pledged delegats in OR & KY to push us over 2025)...

I read Dawn's blog on Daily Kos today. It is an excellent essay on tolerance -even of those who are most difficult to tolerate.

Maeve as you know we faced some serious ignorance in Indiana. Last Monday I was out hanging door hangers with two kids in tow. A man in a pick-up (with a gun hanging on the rack behind his head)pulled up and yelled at me, "What are you putting on my door!" I took a deep breath - clutched my cell phone and walked up to him...(this is the morning after the horrible event) I hadn't hung anything on his door - he wasn't on our list. I quickly observed the NRA hat he was wearing and cautiously informed him I was a volunteer helping remind voters to get to the polls. He noticed my daughter's Obama shirt and then rolled his eyes. I said, "Please don't run over us." He responded almost shocked, "Why would I do that?" I then shared with him the several awful experiences we had encountered in the days prior. He parked his car and got out and gave me a hug. He apologized for the haters. We then had a great conversation about Obama and he was eager to listen and learn. We finally went separate ways and then about 20 minutes later he pulled up behind us with bottles of cold water for the kids and I.

It was certainly a lesson for me. When I saw the guy my instinct was to cut and run but something kept me there and pushed me to talk to him. Fortunately I was up on Obama's gun issues and the man was clearly impressed. He agreed with everything I said and I honestly think he might have even voted for Obama after our discussion. There wasn't a chance in hell he would have considered it if I hadn't talked to him.

We MUST reach out to these folks - all of them - all 50 states.

I went out this weekend and registered voters. I started on Friday evening because I was excited. The 4th door I went to there were 3 people there Dad, Mom and daughter of about 18. Dad and Mom were republicans, when I was at the door they were confused because NO ONE ever just comes around registering people to vote. But after we talked and thier daughter came up to the door who was not registered they were happy I came. They said "someone should do this every year" they wanted to switch to Democrats.....to vote for Obama! I did not have any Obama gear on because I wanted this to be about registering to vote, not just Obama. Of course once I start talking, it is always about Obama. I went out again ...in the rain Saturday...and knocked 98 doors. I got...12!!! republicans that wanted to switch to democrats!! This is in Iowa, where we already love Barack, but this is wonderful. We already had a special election in which a republican seat was taken and giving it to democrat. I tell you people we are on our way. But WE have to do the work. I got some doors slammed in my face, but the people who switched made it worth it. Some people said they just did not have the time to go switch, and they probley would have stayed home! This is going to work. But once again WE have to it.

That's great, but why does it matter what party they are? It's the general, they can vote for whomever they want.

The bit about "staying home" suggests to me people think it's like a primary or caucus. They don't have to be registered in a particular party to vote for that party's candidate in a general. As long as they're registered, what does it matter what party they are?

Yeah, becoming a Democrat for me to caucus for Barack was kinda a big deal. Not really, in that I've voted Dem more often than not, but also there was a reason I never registered as a Dem, and I still think of myself as an Independent. Fortunately, IL has open primaries, so it never was an issue before I moved here. And then I got elected to some Democratic office at the caucus, so now I have to be a Democrat for the next two years.

I guess your post set off alarm bells, in that this primary campaign has gotten so much attention I wouldn't want people to assume that the same terms apply to the general, and it sounded like they were. I'd hate for folks who want to vote for Barack stay home because they think they have to be a Democrat in order to vote for him in the general.

But again, great job, Laura, and thanks for helping us build upon our victory here in IA.

Is anyone here from the 3rd district? Boswell isn't technically a Republican, but he votes like one, and I'd sure like to replace him with a progressive Democrat like Ed Fallon. Unfortunately, though, Boswell is surprisingly popular here.

This guy may definitely be someone to watch!

But I will go on record as saying I don't think WV will be as bad as they are predicting. I'm thinking (hoping) that Barack supporters will vote in force and the Hillary supporters may think it's a done deal and will come out in fewer numbers. Or maybe at the last minute people will switch to Obama - a lot of people really do like to vote for the person they believe will win. I guess we'll know soon enough!

The only thing that may be interesting is watching the Clinton surrogates desperately trying to change the current attitude of the press, which is "Why should we care?"

I did see part of it, Dan. What I thought of it was that he was direct. He was more interested in making his points than he was in revving up the crowd. He treated the event as a sober opportunity to speak to sober people about the sober situation we are in.

I listened to him on Ed Schultz today. I was grinning ear to ear the entire time! He was so honest and blunt about the state of the election and what kind of leadership our country needs ('We need a leader who is gonna say, "Come on guys, lets huddle up," and tell us what we need to do.')
He is a big advocate of green jobs and it seems like he is providing the right kind of leadership for MT to head in this direction.

Ed praised him for being a true progressive and a fresh voice. He pushed him to go for VP if it is offered to him. He said the folks in MT like his little dog too much to let him move to D.C.

I have been a huge fan of Brian Schwietzer since I heard him at the National Press Club Luncheon about a year ago. He was mentioned as a potential VP for HRC, and he has supported her. However, he is brilliant and an agronomist (Ph.D. possibly). I think he would be a great VP because he is so down to earth.

Not surprising after some voter poll interviews I saw of Hillary supporters.. the do seem to know some of her stump speech positions.. but nothing in detail.
Barack is simply the best choice for America.

Yes some things are left better unspoken of. But I will say there is a huge need for voters to be educated about Obama because obviously many are being misled about our candidate, so although their primary is over WV is very important in Noveber... as every state and every vote... We should never downplay a voter or a state out of respect...you can go into detail of how a state effects things... but every voter is important in America!!

I have been coordinating groups of canvassers from our congressional district. We organized trips to Milwaukee and Indiana for voter registration and GOTV.

I don't usually listen to HIllary, but I am going to listen to her speech tonight. Anyone think there's even a chance that she will step down either before next Tuesday or by the end of the week?

It's Stephanie Tubbs-Jones. I actually feel a little bad for her, because she is trying so hard to be a loyal friend to HRC, and there is no way she will be re-elected in Ohio. Her district went overwhelmingly for Obama!

It's always interesting to hear Rep. Clyburn speak. He was just interviewed by Keith O. He said he and others in leadership positions are "trying very hard to maintain their neutrality". I"ll bet that's tough when Hillary is still crossing the line with Barack.

He said WV is showing appreciation for the Clintons in their vote today and were not expressing a negative view of Barack. Thinks Barack needs to emphasize his life story more and how rooted Barack is in his faith. Barack didn't start early enough expressing those things but thinks it will not be a problem in November.

You're an Iowan? Cool... I worked in Waterloo the final week in 2004 for Kerry (I was a state co-chair of Vets for Kerry in Wisconsin). Also came down for the Harkin Steak Fry and the JJ dinner. I LOVED being part of the caucuses. I'm jealous that you guys are so spoiled with all the access, but the retail politics are a *critical* part of the process.

I did all my homework, and based my decision on Iowa. Figured that if he resonated with you guys, then he would definitely win...

The other real election was the special election runoff in the Mississippi 1st Congressional. The Dem won 2 weeks ago 49-46, but because he didn't hit 50 today becomes the final vote.

If the Dem wins again, it's ANOTHER takeaway for the Dems in a district that had been reliably red for some time. Plus, we're kicking butt over the Repugnants in congressional fundraising, and they had to spend a BUNCH of dough in what used to be a safe district.

It's just a "beauty contest" kind of primary, as far as the presidential race goes (though no doubt HRC will spin it if she should win).

remember a couple months ago when someone leaked their strategy? it was to make people think the media was biased against her, and make the media think they were being biased against her, and to keep hammering on that; as if!!

With almost half of the votes reported, she's ahead by about 57,000 in the popular vote. If the pattern continues, she'll be up by about 100,000 at the end of the night.

That's a much smaller gain than was anticipated.

NBC NEWS has allocated 22 of West Virginia's 28 delegates so far -- 16-6 for Clinton.

I resemble that remark. :-)

But I'm not sure math geekiness is enough to know the answer. I don't know anything about how they determine delegates in WV. If it's based on sheer percentages regardless of location of vote, then I'd say Edwards could get a delegate or two.

He won? Officially? That's great. That should take away one more stupid argument for why the SDs should pick Hillary.

How can Terry Mc. say that she would be better down ticket? I was glad to see Keith (or Chris?) call him on that one after the interview was over.

Highly unlikely. As part of the proportional allocation in every state, Party rules also require a 15% threshold to earn a delegate. So to win at least a single delegate in any district, he'd need to be pretty competitive somewhere.

Also, take a look at the fact that McCain is only polling around 75%. The conservative base REALLY doesn't like him.

yeah, and during the GE he's gonna HAVE to distance himself from the base even further, or he'll NEVER stand a CHANCE!!! he'll have to flop BACK to those "liberal" "cowboy" "maverick" ways.

let's all know and be ready to repeat that he's voted, in the last year on the must-stands, 95% with bush. i heard it on thom hartmann, interviewing someone from the big AZ newspaper. (the sun???)

It's the Arizona Republic.

Yeah, once we get to the general, the analysis should be this:

Suppose the narrowly divided electorate is still around 50/50.

Obama gets the Dem 50%, plus gains lots of independents and some Republicans.

McCain loses some of the Rep 50% (the hard-core conservatives), and starts with a significant handicap.

All this national polling right now isn't addressing the depressed turnout on the right side from a McCain candidacy. And Hillary would have energized those folks to come out and vote against her. ANOTHER reason to keep her off the ticket completely.

Sharon, I'm happy to see your comment on the popular vote. They were hoping she could get so much more than that, like 400,000, right? I thought I had heard they hoped for 600,000 turnout, with her getting 2/3 of the vote.

SFT, I thought Amy was absolutely fabulous! I think that the women - Amy K, Claire Mc, Kathleen S, Jan - are his best surrogates. I LOVE that Barack is comfortable around smart, strong women. Not just comfortable. I think he seeks them out.

Call me crazy, but I don't think of HIllary as a strong woman. Strident, yes, but not strong, Strong implies steady., for me anyway, and she doesn't fit that bill!

Did you know Amy was MN Attorney General before she ran for the Senate? Absolutely straight & competent woman. In my life I've know a few women like Hillary and they always make me sad. They are bright enough and generally strive for important things but they are overwhelmed by ambition and distort themselves because of that. I have mentored many women over my long career and one I remember "sold her soul" for what she thought was a "more prestiguous" position and then she "lost herself". I really begged her not too, but she just couldn't let go of her ambition. I believe this is the same situation. HRC acts as if its "the woman thing" but really its the "ambition thing".

You are so right. No matter how she tries to dress it up, she is still in it because of personal ambition. They were right tonight on MSNBC when they said Hillary is staying in partly to still try to win it but also to control how her chapter in the HIstory books will be written.

Good point about ambition.

I was thinking this afternoon about how tough it would be to decide to run for President these days. So many critical issues, such difficult decisions, such a grueling process.

So how would I sum up their motivation? Certainly they both have limitless self-confidence, which too many people mistake as egotism. But really, if I had to sum it up in a few words for each candidate, what is the driving force behind their candidacy?

Hillary: Ambition, Power
Barack: Altruism, Idealism

That decision is, as we say in the Army... too easy.

I just heard this: Obama rally tomorrow night in Grand Rapids, MICHIGAN is welcome. The VanAndel Arena personnel had to call HQ as the expected turnout is now at 12,000……and this is usually GOP country! They had only planned on 6000.
