At the 8th Annual Latino Festival, the cultural diversity of Latinos was on full display. The sights, sounds and aromas that filled Veterans’ Park in downtown Manchester emphasized the vibrancy of this oft-overlooked community of Granite Staters. The many cultures, music, and cuisines of Latin America and the Caribbean enriched the weekend, and festival-goers danced to salsa music, scarfed down alcapurria and empanadas, and watched traditional Bolivian folk dancing.
Barack has always valued diversity and the distinctiveness of Latino cultures, thanks to his years working side-by-side with Latino leaders in the communities of Chicago and in the Illinois State Legislature. Iris Martinez, the first Latina elected to the IL State Senate and a colleague of Barack for many years, visited New Hampshire this weekend to meet with Latino leaders and voters at the festival.
While the thousands of festival-goers came primarily for the food and music, many had the issues and challenges facing our country on their minds. They were eager to discuss them with Iris. Barack understands the challenges facing Latinos on a personal level, Iris told the voters she met.
“He’s the only candidate that has the experience of working with Latino community leaders first-hand,” she said.
