For the People! By the People! We had a great event here on Sunday at my house. With eight people in attendance we were comfortable in the living room and not crowded. My daughter Alexa and her friend Taylor made chocolate chip and snickerdoodle cookies for us and we sat around the Christmas tree and discussed our issues and ways to help our communities. We talked about a lot of things here at the event with all of our issues seeming to be wrapped up mostly around the economy and the idea that if we fix the economy then we can get the rest of the problems fixed. Healthcare, foreign policy, the environment and ethics in politics seemed to be major themes as well. We discussed doing a few different community service events such as a food drive or an inauguration ball with profits to go to the people in our community who need the help the most.
We will all be getting ideas together this week about who we feel needs the most help in our community and how to best help those people in the short time between now and the Inauguration. I will post our chosen event on here soon. I am currently the Vice President of a Community Service group called RPAD (Rebuild Polk After Disaster). We started in 2004 in reponse to the three major hurricanes that passed through Polk County, devastating our area. To date, there are still remaining blue tarps on homes, though tattered and torn and much less useful for their purpose as days go by. Today I called our Execuitive Director to see where she felt that the largest community need might be and her comment to me was that with our ongoing cold weather, people are most in need to help on electric bills at this time of the year. I will be presenting this to our group to see if that is a need that we can help fulfill before inauguration. I am also planning on contacting the other group from Lakeland that did an event on Saturday to see if we can work together and combine our reources to make an event happen in the short time we have. I will post another blog when we have a definite event. As a quick aside here, I want to say Thank you to Obama and his incoming administration for getting people throughout the United States of America to unite together for Change. Obama is not yet in office and he is changing the way we view our country! Awesome. Oh by the way, we had both Democrats and Republicans at our party! MeLynda Rinker
