This is my first bog experience. As a child my mom took me to Republican headquarters In Illinois and I licked stamps for the the "I Like Ike" campaign. Since those days I have raised three children and moved across the country to the state of Washington. I was a Hillary supporter until the Democratic Convention and now am a Obama supporter. I have worked my whole life on women's issues, environmental issues and now work in the local food movement. I am 61 an health care is a critical issue for me.
I watched with dismay and then outrage last week as the Republican's engaged in character assassination and Obama bashing - I was shocked! The choice of Palin is so upsetting for me - I have been driven to this new technology. Her choice was strictly political to galvanized an un-energized extremist base! She is a Pentacostal Christian who believes in shooting Polar bears from planes, anti-choice, wants to drill for oil off our shores and believes in and is developing other critically sensitive areas of Alaska. We don't know her world views and her selection to this office is a rebuke of our democratic system. Founders wanted candidates to have legislative experience in governing and imagined the House and Senate as a place to get that experience before running for President of our country. Biden and Obama understand the system and have spent their adult lives in reforming it to be more inclusive. Biden was selected with respect for his potential role in governing a country where he would need to know how to work with congress - where compromise is the order of the day. McCain is 72 years old! He is not in good health. And he picks a woman - known as an attack fish - who bears grudges against her neighbors who has limited legislative experience and little knowledge for the art and grace of compromise. There were so many qualified woman candidates to select from in the Republic party - I think it is disgraceful to have selected someone like Palin! If I was a Republican woman, there is no way I could support someone like Palin. Hillary paid her dues - Palin is no way - no how - like Mrs. Clinton. Maybe because McCain is an old white guy - he doesn't understand how insulting this choice was to women like me and others like me who have been involved in public service...and yes, community service! And, let me say, I was raised an an Episcopalian (christian) where we learned the importance to caring for others, where we learned lessons fro the life of Jesus of Nazareth - who was no CEO - but a community organizer of the highest order!
A group of us at an end of summer party were talking. Maybe the Obama campaign should organize buses in every state---Hillary Supporters for Obama -- have banners on the sides of buses and t-shirts and make them big media events in every state---including Alaska! Woman and men on board wuld go knocking on doors or go work at an Obama headquaters. Is it too late to pull something like this off?
OK. Thanks for listening. Maryon Attwood from another small town America.
