This past Saturday afternoon members of Obama San Mateo gathered in Redwood City (CA) to see the recently released Michael Moore movie "Sicko". It was a wonderful event for the group. Several members arrived a little early to pass out Barack Obama's health plan and Obama San Mateo's two-sided brochure. Overall, greetings to movie-goers, half of whom were arriving to see Sicko, were very welcomed. A few people expressed great interest in reading the handouts, and a couple of people shared their mutual support for the Obama '08 campaign.
Sicko is a movie with many facets. It is funny, sad, poignant and entertaining, sometimes at the same moment. Michael Moore begins the movie by focusing on several citizens who have been denied medical coverage by various insurance companies, some of whom were volunteers at Ground Zero after 9/11, and follows their plight throughout the movie.
Although the movie is portrayed in a documentary format, it flows well, time seems to go rather quickly, and it has just enough hilarious moments to counteract what can be considered a terrible portrait of our country in the way we treat uninsured and under-insured citizens. Sadly, the movie also demonstrates how much better several other countries treat their citizens within their healthcare systems.
The movie is a must-see for people of all ages. I am a very harsh grader of the movies I see, and I can honestly give this movie an A+. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and yes, I will admit to shedding a tear during a very moving moment in the movie. Now that is a rare moment!
After the movie, OSM members met for dinner at El Sinaloense in San Mateo for great Mexican food where they shared their thoughts of the movie, and it seems that everyone had a different favorite scene. It was agreed by all attendees at dinner that seeing a movie and having dinner as a group is a great way for Obama San Mateo to have fun together when we're not having a meeting. I'm certain that we'll do it again sometime.
