OREGON VOTES TODAY
Note: We have Mail-In Ballots, so we've been voting since the first days of May.
With a record turnout of 75,000 at last Sunday's Portland rally and Oregon polls showing Sen. Obama ahead, we continue to fight for each vote using reason and persistent sweet persuasion.
One vote is precious like gold.
Yesterday, I left what I hope is a convincing phone message for my neighbor who supports Barack, but has stated that he never participates in the primary, only in the general election.
One vote is precious like gold.
On my break today, I'll make more calls to other supporters who might not have dropped their ballots yet.
One vote is precious like gold. We've been breathing this thought in my small Oregon coastal county, like everywhere else.
Rain or shine and more rain, disregarding polls and pundits for the most part, we've plodded along for over 15 months now, campaigning for Barack, dreaming at the end of this day, of a blog heading that says "Obama Wins Oregon!"
After I voted for Barack, I took a picture of my ballot, to include in the scrapbook I'm making for my three year-old grandson.
I'll let my grandson know that his grandfather and I, previously NAVs or non-affiliated voters, re-registered as Democrats to vote for the first time in a presidential primary election and donated hard-earned money to a political candidate, first time ever. He'd smile proudly knowing that we're among the millions of voices who stood up for change. Literally, among the million in Oregon, since The Oregonian states that turnout is expected to top one million today. http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1211261111282260.xml&coll=7
I dream that my grandson would be inspired that his grandparents had a small hand in electing not only one of the greatest presidents in U.S. history, but also one of the world's most magnanimous leaders. And I can just imagine the warm feeling in his heart when, as a grown up, he first fully appreciates the fact that he did a high-five with Barack Obama.
Oregon Trivia
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/19/how-oregon-could-help-oba_n_102507.html
The population of Oregon, according to census estimates is roughly 3.7 million, 90 percent white and 1.9 percent black.
Oregonians have not voted for a Republican since Reagan in 1984. Since January, moreover, more than 110,000 people have registered as Democrats, roughly half of them new voters, the other half party switchers.
"The people of Oregon are extremely progressive, and so Barack's message of change is resonating," said Nick Shapiro, the Senator's communications director in the state.
