Disappointed about FISA

I was so gungho about Obama before the FISA vote on Wednesday--I was talking to friends about the election and the hope I had about the changes to come. THEN, Wednesday's vote came in and I found out that my beloved candidate voted with other Democrats to capitulate yet again to Bush's illegal wiretapping of Americans. I was devastated. I went out and took the OBAMA bumper sticker off my car, and about 5 minutes later, a knock on my door from a local Democratic fundraiser. Talk about timing! So I blasted him with the news about the FISA vote and he was quite stunned that it went down that way. We talked for about thirty minutes about the betrayal of the Democrats, how weak they are when they can't stand up for their principals against the worst president in American history, how Pelosi took impeachment off the table even as the true American Kucinich read for hours the crimes of George W. Bush.

I don't think I can get over this FISA vote. I can't vote for McCain-McSame, so I might just not vote.

Me too. I cannot get over this one either because I thought he stood for something different from GW Bush. I wonder why he fails to stick to themes that worked so well during the primaries.

He is very different from Bush - why would this one vote - which he explained his position and even during this campaing, helped draft an amendment that would hold fast to his desire to keep FISA as it was has been for the past 30 years - sour people to a candidate that will really bring change?

It is true there are so many issues that face this country that we have the opportunity to speak on this fall. I've found that many people feel as you feel and I think it's really too bad. when you consider the fate of our environmetn, our fellow citizens that are losing their homes, our bankrupt government that has nothing to help stabilize the economy, our soldiers fighting a war on tow fronts and Bush and McCain trying to start another war in Iran...I think voting for Senaotr Obama needs to be about more than just FISA. I know you may have wanted him to vote differently - I did too - but there are many more fish to fry. DOn't give up or lose your love for the possibility of really making tomorrow better.

Some are claiming that the telecoms are getting off scott free with the FISA bill and a “get out of jail free” card for any crimes they may have committed—that’s not true.

The FISA bill gives telecoms immunity from CIVIL lawsuits (where they would have to pay money). It does NOT protect them from criminal charges if they’re found to have broken the law.

President Obama could still have the telecoms investigated (by his Attorney General John Edwards perhaps) and prosecute them in federal court. Obama would also have FULL access to the intelligence to see for himself what’s being done and if any reforms or changes are needed—you think that would happen with McCain in office?

I don’t agree with Obama on everything but does anyone really think we’ll be better off with four more years of Bush/McCain, endless war in Iraq, a new war with Iran, tax cuts for the rich and more neocons on the Supreme Court?
