I'm working on a piece for the Huffington Post about the efficacy of political polls, revamping an op-ed I wrote some time ago for Barack The Youth Vote: "Poll Dancing: questions, answers and the naked truth."
I've been polled a half a dozen times since then, including one which offered me the opportunity to "vote" for every conceivable presidential match-up: HRC vs. Romney, HRC vs. McCain, HRC vs. evey other "viable" Repub candidate. Edwards vs each of them as well. The problem? Obama was not included. How accurate is a presidential poll that omits a top tier candidate? It's time we looked up the skirts of these folks to see if their underwear is clean, time to evaluate what purpose is being served here. Or which candidate.
I need to hear from as many of you who have been polled--or know someone who has. What kind of questions were you asked? The way they're framed matters, as in "Would you rather shoot yourslf in the head (press #1) or vote for _______ (press #2)." If you remember, who polled you? Did you feel the questions were reasonable? Fair? Biased? Confusing? Ridiculous (I've been asked whether or not I'd give Dick Cheney a kidney if he needed one and whether or not I'm afraid of circus clowns)?
Send me your best recollection of specific questions--or polls--that left you feeling manipulated or turned-off or without an option for an honest response.
Thanks!
