I traveled to Evansville, Indiana today with a group from St.Louis and had an experience I wanted to share on the weekend before the Indiana primary:
My canvassing partner Mary Ellen and I were canvassing in an area where there was two large areas of houses that were separated by a 2 mile walk...we were walking on the left hand side of the road where there was no sidewalk and there was alot of hills and curves...all of a sudden we heard a voice shouting "Do you need a ride"...to this I replied, "Yes, but please pull into the next driveway where we can meet you since this was a road where drivers tended to drive fast and we were concerned that she would cause an accident by stopping in the middle of the road...
Before we got into her van, I asked if she minded giving a couple of Obama supporters a lift and she said that this was fine and that she was concerned that we were walking along a "dangerous road"...she took us to the entrance of the subdivision where we needed to be and proceeded to tell us that she had lived on the road a long time and that she had seen many accidents and she just could not bear to see us risking our lives...she mentioned that she felt that either Barack or Hillary would do a good job as president...she also said that the Obama campaign should be happy that it had two dedicated volunteers out there willing to walk a long way and on a dangerous stretch of road...we profusely thanked this kind woman and went on our way...Mary Ellen mentioned to me that she thought she saw this woman outside of her house as we walked down the road and sure enough that was the case...the sign in front of her house read "Hoosiers for Hillary" !!
Yes, we CAN disagree without being disagreeable...this story was the highlight of our day...LET'S GET OUT AND MAKE THIS CHANGE AND BRING OUR COUNTRY BACK TO THIS SHINING EXAMPLE WHERE WE LOOK PAST OUR DIFFERENCES AND LOOK OUT FOR EVERYONE'S BACK!!
