As a 64-yr-old white female who grew up in Georgia and returned home after 36 years in New Mexico, I can assure you that former President Carter's statement that the recent extreme demonstated animosity toward President Obama is based on racism is causing many people who oppose Obama's programs to take a second look at their motives, and to be more aware of where the line is between opposing the programs and denegrating the man. Some who are horrified at being referred to as racist realize they have allowed a racist element to lead the opposition's actions and that failing to speak out against those objectionable actions is, in effect, condoning racism. Mr. Carter has done this president, this administration, and this country a great service by throwing light on the elephant in the kitchen to prompt those who had been ignoring it to analyze their own motives and ensure they won't continue to be used to further the racists' agenda of violence and hatred. I think this will be reflected in coming days as decent people opposing the president's programs will be more careful to separate themselves from the gun-toting, nazi-symbolizing, death-threatening, extreme right-wing racists who appear to be leading a much larger group of supporters than is actually true. Thank you for saying what needed to be said, Former President Carter.
