The Michigan Campaign for Change Headquarters opening was a wild success. The event drew in 1319 supporters, a number which shattered all turnout expectations. The event did more than just show enthusiasm for Senator Obama's campaign, it displayed how ready Michigan is to get to work, in order to ensure that Michigan makes the right choice in November. The majority of the attendees enthusiastically signed up for volunteer shifts in the Michigan headquarters which, will also serve as the central grassroots organizing and volunteer center for Detroit.
The turnout also displayed the gigantic enthusiasm gap between Obama’s supporters and those of his opponent John McCain, whose Regional HQ opening for Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin which was headlined by Mitt Romney was only attended by “about 200 GOP officeholders, activists and volunteers." (Detroit News, July 15, 2008)
"We know what we have to do… We are the foot soldiers. We have the opportunity to shatter any voter turnout records Michigan has ever seen."
If Yesterday’s event was any indication, people are ready to take their enthusiasm and use it to register voters across the state and talk to people about why this election is so important. If the people of Michigan get up and demand change we will not only shatter those records but also have a new kind of president in Washington come 2009.
