Jack Jenkins, a Barack Obama supporter sent us some great shots from the South Carolina event. Click here to check them out.

We love getting pictures from all of you out there and we're creating a Flickr account just for you guys. If you've got some photos that you'd like to see used at BarackObama.com, just send an email to photos@barackobama.com with your photographs attached and they should automatically be uploaded to our account.

Please include the title of the photos in the subject line of the email and your name, where you're from, and the location of the photo in the body of the email.

We'll take a look and from time to time you'll see your work featured right here on the webstie. We look forward to seeing what you send!

Here's the ONLY coverage of Barack in LV. The West and the South are goiuing to be tough. Notice the size of the crowd! The grass roots will win this thing.

Use of Photographs - Permissions? | Report to Admin

Jon,

A few questions regarding the photographs and usage restrictions, permissions, credits, etc. Please give details for each of these categories of images:

1. Any photographs accessed via the Flickr link in the footer of the home page - are those all available for use on off-site group webpages and message boards?

2. Any photographs sent by others to you at photos@barackobama.com and posted on the Obama website by HQ bloggers - are those available for use on off-site group webpages and message boards?

3. Any screenshots from videos linked from the Obama site - are those available for use on off-site group webpages and message boards?

4. Any images in the Obama Store of campaign materials - are those available for use on off-site group webpages and message boards?

When replying, it would be appreciated if you would author a new blog entry so the answers are prominent for everyone to view.

I'm not part of the campaign so this isn't official by any means, which probably will make it less than satisfying. However, I do know about Creative Commons Licensing so I figured I'd give it a shot.

This site has the CC logo at the bottom of the page, often that logo will link to actual license information, the one on this page does not, which sort of leaves us guessing to some extent.

By far the most common Creative Commons licensing selection is the non-commercial attribution share and share alike license. Judging by the logos on the Flickr site I'd be willing to bet that's what we're dealing with.

Look at the bottom of the photos on the Flickr site, see those little license logos? Hover over them. Attribution means you need to give credit, i.e. you can't claim them as your own. Non-Commercial means you can use them, but the newspaper can't. Personal blogs, homepages, or emailing them to your friends should all be fine. Popular commercial blogs, i.e. Daily Kos and the like may not be, and large commercial enterprises like the NY Times definitely aren't. Share Alike means free to distribute, given you're within the the other described restrictions.

Given that those are the restrictions set on Flickr and this site is also licensed Creative Commons, I'd feel safe in assuming the same rules apply to anything posted on this site.

Perhaps per your request they'll give an official description in a proper blog to settle any confusion that may exist, but this is how I understand it.

Hi Dan:

I found this info in their Terms of Service. I'm guessing that the TOS gives a loose permission to use anything on this site as long as it is credited and that if anyone posts, emails or uploads content to this site, it is an automatic granting of permission for use with the same restrictions.

I'm still in need of confirmation that this also pertains to the photos on Flickr in the HQ account and in the soon to be newly created Groups Account, and screenshots from videos.

I am wanting to use some of the photos from Flickr, the Obama store and in the Issues docs for a website I am creating for one of my groups.

I'm also wanting to use one of the images from the store for letterhead for handouts at our group's organizing meeting this week.

I've also created a slideshow for our website using selected photos from the Flickr site and will be adding to it each time more photos are uploaded. The slideshow is a visual diary of the campaign trail for those not able to view the videos.

All that being said, I just want to be assure I'll be covered by just putting an umbrella of general credit to the barackobama.com website that will cover the flickr photos and the store images too. Also confirm my understanding that the terms of service provide the same use permissions of any photos a group member submits to the Obama HQ and Groups accounts

Here's an example:

Jon Jones posted a photo from the Las Vegas event and said it was one of a few posted on the DailyKOS and gave a link to the others.

Since that one photo was posted in Jon's HQ blog, does that make that photo useable on my website under the terms of service and do I credit barackobama.com or dailyKOS?

Wouldn't this be better as a Flickr Group?

That way you can get photos from anyone, add your own, and still keep some control.
