Has anyone seen Michelle Obama in C-SPAN? I had no idea she was such a great speaker. I didn't intend to watch for long, but soon found myself glued to the television. I was just reading Biden's memo which makes it clear that he won't be guiding his folks to caucus for Edwards if he is not viable.

The question being, do Biden supporters move to Obama, or someone else? Senator Obama was very gracious to Joe Biden at the last debate.

Biden and Obama respect each other immensely becuase they are both people who live by their convictions and speak from the heart. They're both direct. None of that telling people what they want to hear.

Edwards fared no better as the Democratic Party’s Vice Presidential candidate in 2004. After being selected as John Kerry’s running mate, Edwards said, “I think we will be very competitive in the South, particularly in those states in which national Democrats need to be competitive to be successful.” [Associated Press, 7/10/04] Unfortunately, Edwards failed to carry his home state. Edwards lost his home county—Moore County—by more than eleven thousand votes, 24,714 to 13,555. He also lost his hometown by more than 300 votes, 506 to 191.

At the end of the day, despite repeated assurances, Kerry-Edwards also failed to win a single southern state. So it’s understandable that this time around, even John Edwards’s own people are acknowledging his vulnerability: Rob Tully, a former state party chairman and Edwards backer, said “if he doesn't win Iowa or come very close this time, ‘we're done.’” [USA TODAY, 12/12/07]

Classic Clinton move. They apparently have announced their 2007 fundraising total, conveniently announcing it just as the DMR poll results are out.

"Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign raised more than $100 million in total for 2007, her advisers said Monday night, in addition to $10 million that she transferred from her old Senate campaign account.

The Clinton campaign released their good news at roughly the same time Monday night that the Des Moines Register published the results of its final poll of Iowa caucus-goers; that poll found that in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, Senator Barack Obama had support from 32 percent of voters, Mrs. Clinton had 25 percent, and former Senator John Edwards had 24 percent of the vote..."

The "duplicity-o-meter" went wild when it noticed that the results were released just after the DMR poll results came out and it scanned the part of the article that said: "Clinton advisers said they were not able to break down the $100 million figure into primary season dollars and general election dollars, which are two distinct categories."

So, the upshot for Obama supporters is, don't fixate on the "$100 million" allegedly raised by HRC regardless of the total that ends up getting announced by the Obama campaign. It seems that a significant portion of Hillary's money will never actually get used since it is designated for the general election.

Of course, there was no word from the HRC campaign on whether or not they were within sniffing distance of half a million donors.

Let's stay strong people! Remember, our New Year's Resolution is to change the world this year!!!

Hillary and Bill still don't get it.

I swear, nearly most of what they've done, and tried to pull, during "their" campaign has been counter productive.

This tidbit of fundraising info is another stunt that will be counter productive as well, simply because: 1.) it goes along with the idea that she is the establishment's candidate, and has received large sums of cash for the election, much of which is likely special interest money; and 2.) it's obvious that they've released the amount in response to the latest polling numbers in order to save face.

This trick shows that she's definitely bothered/insecure by what's going on in Iowa.

Bill Clinton wishes he had the kind of mojo that Barack Obama has. Bill Clinton never drew the kind of crowds that Barack Obama draws and the number of people contributing to the Obama campaign is nothing short of remarkable. By any objective or subjective measure, Barack Obama "rocks" much harder and with more authenticity than Bill or Hillary could ever dream of.

Clinton was a decent, arguably good President, and might have been great if not for his character flaws that led to the impeachment debacle and other scandals that indicate severe ethics issues, if not outright breaches of the law (Marc Rich pardon with Hugh Rodham getting paid? Taking advantage of an intern or his other infidelities? Anyone? Anyone?)

I think it has to be difficult for Bill Clinton to have to support his wife when he can certainly see the kind of excitement and inspiration that Obama generates. My hunch is that Clinton admires Obama, but is also a bit jealous because once Obama is elected, Bill will no longer be the most influential Democrat.

Obama has all of Clinton's ability to connect with people, but with none of the baggage. Obama has the same empathy, the optimism and the energy that Clinton burst onto the scene with, but his other personal qualities and his unique heritage and biography mean there is more to it than that. Obama is also every bit the equal of Bill or Hillary intellectually, probably moreso.

Make no mistake, I voted for Bill Clinton twice and thought the effort to impeach him should not have been pursued, but I never donated money or went canvassing for him as I have for Obama.

History will be the final judge, but I believe that Barack Obama will leave a much richer legacy than anything Bill Clinton can ever dream of. The times have changed, but the Clintons have not. Obama is the right man for these times.

P.S. It's not going to work, but nice try on the discouragement. Hillary will not win the nomination. After she loses Iowa, she will likely be 0-for-4 or 1-for 4 in the early states (if she can salvage Nevada) by the time we head into the Feb. 5 states. By that time, the anti-Hillary vote will really be accruing to Obama once some of the other candidates are forced to drop out.

Bill Clinton isn't running. And its obvious he isn't running her campaign either.

If she is so smart and political, why did she run such a crappy campaign?

And Hillary may be smart, but she's not brilliant. She did not graduate Yale with honors, meaning she was in the bottom half of her class. Obama was Magna Cum Laude, so he was in the top 5%. By definition.

The fact is this presidential bid is bid for Hillary Clinton NOT Bill Clinton.

And seeing that you are saying Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton is EXACTLY why this is one of the major reasons Hillary Clinton will not get the nomination. Americans do not want a backdoor presidency for Bill Clinton. He had his time to lead. Whether he used that time wisely is still quite controversial. One of the perception with the Hillary's campaign from the start is she is running on her husband's coattails.

It is probably not a good time to compare Bill's and Barack's accomplishments. But I suspect if Barack Obama becomes our 44th President of the United States of America (which I sincerely believe will happen), he will use his time to the best of his abilities 24/7 doing his work on behalf of ordinary citizens, and he will wisely lead our nation with excellent judgment and council that in the final documentation of history will show that Barack Obama should be added to the faces on Mount Rushmore. Now, can you see that I know in my mind Barack Obama is the real deal?

Barack Obama is not trying to win to score some kind of ambitious ego points, or claim an entitlement privilege of a group. He simply wants to lead us to our better selves, make us whole, and built a better tomorrow that our ever present potential enlightened greatest as a unified America demands. Quite frankly, Bill Clinton NEVER had this awesome scope of vision.

Bill Clinton NEVER carried 50% of the vote. period. He won with 43% the first time and I believe 45% the second. He is not the brilliant politician the media makes him out to be. yes, we understand. You have used your logic and decided that only Hillary will win.

you have to understand our point of view. We have been told that since February when he announced. We were told he would NEVER raise enough money; the Clinton machine was going to out raise everyone 10 fold. And we were told he would never come close to her in the polls. So, this isn't new info you are telling us.

We just know better. WE have faith. We are FIRED UP AND READY TO GO. And we have been working hard. And there seems to be a whole lot of really smart people in the Obama campaign who know politics, 'cause they have us so organized.

Actually, they do mention the DMR poll near the bottom of their front page article about their poll. The DMR poll has more credibility because it accounts for the independents, who break overwhelmingly for Barack. The CNN poll is closer to the rest of the recent polls (though with Edwards looking much weaker), because it was conducted in much the same manner as the rest. But my rule of thumb has been to add 5 points to Barack and subtract 5 for HRC to get a sense of where they stand (not very scientific, I know), but that would put the results very close to the DMR results.

DMR has been the closest 86% of the time. They're the only one who got it in the right order last time, when everybody else was so surprised. It seems that the Iowans know best how to poll Iowa.

But it's still just a poll.

We still have to work as though we're 20 points behind.

I'm sorry I've been a bit scarce. I decided to sharpen a knife Friday night and ended up slicing a nice chunk of my index finger almost completely off (sorry... a bit graphic for this time of the morning). Anyway, 16 stitches later .. can we say OUCH!!!! .. the pain is lessening, it's beginning to heal, but it's a bit difficult to type with the dressing and all. It looks like I can forget any ideas of a career in hand modeling :)

Anyway, just wanted to say what a joy it has been to share this journey with you all. In a few days, Iowa will begin a tidal wave of hope for the future that will ripple out across the entire country and in November I will get the best birthday present of my life when Barack Obama is elected President of the United States.

It's going to be a wonderful year, and I'm so proud and honored to be sharing it with you all!

I'm in Iowa and I heard two women who were turned off Sen. Obama because of Oprah. I can't figure out what that was all about. One thought Oprah was backing him because he is black and didn't like her because she built the school in South Africa and the other just had some bad things to say about her. I tried to get them to talk about the candidate and about the issues, but with no luck. People can be weird, can't they?

They were trick-playing Clinton supporters. Her camp was almost foaming at the mouth when Oprah backed Barack Obama. The caller's argument was silly. Obaoprah events drew 30,0000 (mostly white audiences) in Iowa. Three blacks have run for president(even a black woman-Carol Mosely Braun in 2004). Oprah had never endorsed a candidate of any race before.

Pleasant surprise this morning. Friend and publisher in New Hampshire is hosting an Obama event soon. Will call the fellow later today to thank him personally. I was listening to PBS last night and Judy Woodruff was saying that historically only a small percentage of Iowans come out to caucus on primary night. They anticipate a larger than average turnout.

I have a strong feeling if weather is good, Iowans will turn out in record shattering numbers this time. You can even feel the momentum from here in the east. Its time for America to change and face the world. We need a new kind of leader.

Chester - sorry to hear about life dealing you a bad hand....so glad to hear that you are more prone to think now that people are alike....As a white woman who grew up on Long Island amongst very segregated neighborhoods with parents who were friendly towards people of all color, but who I also believe thought of blacks as guilty until proven innocent...Thank God I broke away from that mentality...I can tell you that I for one look past color and do look at character. If you look at Hillary and Obama, obviously in appearances I am most like Hillary because I'm white and I'm a woman...but as far as character I am most like Barack and his character is VERY important to me and is speaking volumes to me! For you, for me, for my children and family, for our country, for OUR world, I pray everyday that Barack Obama will be our president. I'm grateful everyday for his circumstances and his path in life and his willingness to step up to the plate and be our leader. I'm so grateful that he is not doing this for himself or for the glory but rather for us - for all of us - male or female, young or old, black, white, brown, olive, tan, peach. It takes a hell of a lot of character to give up (hopefully) 8 years of your life and be the selfless person it will take to make us United once again. According to her, they saw most of Hillary's support in older women (over 55) and Edwards in older men (over 55). She said Obama had everyone under that age. She said most focus on the very young, but he also had sizeable support 34-55.

hmm... I see an awful lot of gray hair at his events !

She also said (and I continue stress) it all depends on who shows up on caucus night, this is their best guess on how it will turn out.

A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll out this morning has Clinton and Obama virtually tied for the lead in Iowa: Clinton is at 33 percent, Obama is at 31 percent, and Edwards trails with 22 percent. Iowa polling is notoriously difficult. Meanwhile, Barack Obama’s campaign is crowing over the Des Moines Register’s new poll, which has the Illinois senator at 32 percent in the Hawkeye State, followed by Hillary Clinton at 25 percent and John Edwards at 24 percent.

David Schuster is so full of crap. I wish they would let everyone know that he want Edwards to win because he just tried his best to Down Play the DMR Poll and even said the Obama people don't even believe the polls and are not happy with it because it raises expectations. He also said the poll was flawed and the internal polls still have Edwards ahead. I am absolutley thrilled to see the DMR poll. I read the internal polling and it is really telling. The poll says that HRC leads just slightly with Democrats but Barack is pulling in Republicans and Independents. Which is why this poll is the true indicator of what is happening on the ground in Iowa. This is also the reason that he is just slightly behind in the other polls because they are only polling democrats.

I was thinking about this this morning and it dawned on me that we really have to spread the word before deadlines pass to get our republican and independent friends in primary states to temporarily change there party affiliation so that they can vote for Barack in the primaries. Although I think that HRC will loose that lead among dems once Barack wins Iowa we need to make sure that we get everyone who wants to vote for Barack in the primaries an opportunity.

I am so over the top happy this morning.

What's also interesting about that poll is the finding that Hillary's only clear lead is among those without a high school education.

I have my theory on why that would be a key demographic for Hillary, but with due respect to those citizens.......I wonder if they will get out to the caucuses in force.

He is just one of so many we have working there. It is really quite a remarkable organization they've put together.

Actually, Shuster came to MSNBC from FoxNews where he was a reporter for some time.
He certainly seems invested in Edwards and HRC ..like Olbermann is on the HRC bandwagon.

Now, in a way, I do not mind the tempering of the DMR poll as I do not want the expectations game to end up making a 4 point Obama win as some kind of loss.. I see Shuster making that case in a couple of days..you know..discounting this poll today but in a couple of days citing it as evidence that the obama win did not meet expectations if obama should win by less than 7.

Iowa, everything has now aligned to make this improbable journey a reality. This latest DMR poll is something to be proud of indeed, but that pride also comes with risk. The status of front-runner is a double edged sword. On the one hand it signifies and confirms what your phenomenal efforts and sacrifices have accomplished by bringing this campaign of hope and change to the threshold of history. But, on the other hand, it also feeds the specter of complacency. The prospect of attending a caucus can be daunting indeed and any excuse to not meet the challenge head on could prove devastating. You can not assume that the fight is over before it has even begun. Excuses are easy to succumb to when things are hard, things like the bowl game is on, it's cold and snowy, my family is here for the holidays. Do not let yourself fall victim and succumb to the sinister force of complacency. When you look back at January 3rd 2008 you will either have had a hand in history or you will have let history pass you by.

The consequences would be dire, the results calamitous and you would forever have to live with cost of your inaction. The good news is that there is a polar-opposite effect at play at the same time that could magnify your efforts and bring news of a great victory to the world. Every candidate that has watched Barack Obama surge by them from the realm of obscurity has a following that today is feeling defeated. Their faithful see their best efforts falling short. Faith is lost and that saps them of the energy to fight their own battle against complacency. If the thought creeps in to their minds that they are not backing the winner, watching the bowl game sounds just a little more attractive, staying home in a warm cozy house sounds just a little more comfortable, catching up on the family stories sounds just a little more desirable. The coupling of their lost hope and the inspired fire of hope that this campaign is born from will assuredly prove triumphant if you can make that last singular, valiant effort and stand up when it counts. After a casual night, preceeded by the totally encouraging final DMR poll, I got online to read exactly how the corporate media would downplay the shockwave that's beginning in Iowa. True to form they still can't handle the truth. Barack Obama has closed the deal, and still rising...(more to come).

My sister gave me a beautiful wrist watch with Swiss movements, kinda pricey but not extravagant, and it was a beautiful gesture and quite loving surprise. It is the best Christmas gift I've gotten in several years. And what's quite amazing is everytime I look at it, it keeps showing it's Obama time!

FACT #1 (ACCURACY): DMR is accuarte for the same reason other polls have been inaccurate - takes into consideration Mobile users, New caucus-goers, Independents and cross-party caucus attendees. Can't get anything more accurate.

If any poll (eg CNN poll), that does not include mobile users, cross-party caucus-goers, etc, has us tied in first place, then we're winning and the DMR is more accurate than you could've thought.

FACT #2 (HISTORY): In 2004, DMR register endorsed Edwards - he finished 2nd. In 2004, the final DMR poll had Kerry winning - Kerry won. There's a precendent. In the case of the other polls, the precedent is inaccuracy.

Sounds like a big turnout of voters, particularly young voters, is the key to a Barack Obama victory.

I think that is a pretty enviable position to be in. I predict that your well organized campaign will get the young voters to turn out.

I'm just sad to see all the vitriol between the Edward's and Obama campaigns. If Edward's isn't first in Iowa....I will support Senator Obama, but I 'm not sure I will blog here. It's pretty rough against Edwards here.......even more so than against Hillary Clinton.........which really surprises me.

It is the heat of the campaign Greg. In this highly contested race it is understandable that people become passionate about their candidate. I also go sometimes to Dailykos and what some Edwards supporters say about Obama is very harsh and unfair.

I like Edwards. I think he is honest and sincere man. I don't think he is a strong candidate but I believe that he cares about the issues he talks about. I hope that he will get cabinet position in Obama administration:)

Greg, I agree, as a very passionate Barack supporter; I would like to just go on record as saying, however, that these passions make us all a little blind with rage defending what we are passionate about (but guys, he can handle himself!); think of it as how you (if you were still 1000% behind Edwards) would feel about what Biden said, and then recognize that Edwards' 527 has gone past that; you certainly want even now to defend Edwards, and Biden is talking only about experience and where he WON'T ask his supporters to go. I live in Iowa, these 527 ads are CONSTANT and NOT ACCURATE!!!! And we know Edwards is part of it--it is written. I had a lot of respect for John Edwards prior to this 527 thing; I just didn't believe he could lead this country. While I strongly encourage us to REMAIN RESPECTFUL HERE (hint hint) I also understand the passion!!!!

I pretty much echo what marytnurse said. I not only had a great deal of respect for Edwards, but contributed to his campaign before Obama entered the race. I was absolutely horrified with the treatment they got in the beginning when some pundits were accusing them of being bad parents for entering the race with Elizabeth's health. I feel a lot of affection for Elizabeth and think she's a wonderful person. I can even forgive her the recent comments understanding how very strongly she feels for her husband.

I have had problems with Edwards' rhetoric as opposed to his record. Not only voting and supporting the war, but co-sponsoring the authorization was a huge black mark against him for me, but I respected his admission, finally, that it was a mistake. I honestly don't believe that any of those that voted for it 'made a mistake' -- I believe that under truth serum, every one would admit it was a politically motivated vote. The evidence was there. But that's not even important at this point.

Barack Obama simply towers over John Edwards on all accounts for me. Then there was the whole '527' thing which really spoke volumes. To say it was a disappointment would be an understatement. To expect Obama supporters not to be upset by this very obvious hypocrisy is expecting too much. If an aide to Obama had done the same thing, you know you would be upset too.

There has been some vitriol here, but mostly in response to what has been coming out from Edwards. He is saying some things that are simply not true. Many supporters here expected more from Edwards. There are also discussions here of the differences between Obama's policies and Edwards' policies and differences in their records. They have been factual. Pointing out differences is something Edwards has done and Obama has done. It is perfectly legitimate and in no way constitutes vitriol.

It's going to get rough as the caucus/election time is upon us. Candidates will be making their cases and passions will run high. In any blog I've ever gone to, Edwards and Obama supporters have always been passionate but respectful. I think that has been reflective here too. Being an open blog, we can't speak for the occasional troll.

My take:
Obama supporters fell good when they vote.
HRC voters hold their noses as they vote.
JE voters are what he is an angry white male.
If JE ddoes not win Iowa hes done, No money will come his way. What would be interesting would be if Obama offered JE the Attorney General job for his support. JE might be a pretty good AG or possibly solisitor (sp?) general. JE could then go on the attack against HRC etal and Barack could continue to take the high road. I dont have much time, but wanted to let everyone know that I am on the ground working very hard in Iowa. The vollunteers are an incredible collection of enegetic young people, mixed with a bunch of wise older vets all with the passion to make this happen.

Our leaders are VERY organized, and thourough. They are working so hard and this is a very happy bunch of people. No fighting at all and everyone loves being here and doing something bigger then ourselves!

The simple truth is that we are out working the other campaigns onthe ground, Our guy is drawing the biggest crowds, and the poll from last night actually matched what we were seeing on the ground.

We arent taking the poll for granted though, and are expecting it to be close. We will work twice as hard the next few days to make the dream a reality!

The weather is very cold and I cant imagine that the canvassers in the other campaigns have the young able body groups to cover the ammount of ground that we have. I have also noted that the only other canvassers that we see out and about is our own when we overlap! Its an awesome feeling!

There should be a huge turnout of young people, and we also have a ton of republicans coming over to vote for our guy for that night. The key will be turnout, and who actually shows up. So far it looks like most who say they like Obama also say they will be there on Caucus night...

Just a note..if you worry about all these stories on the blogs like politico and the gossip from the pundits on TV, and all the polls that come out affecting the peoples judgement, dont worry about it any more.

90% of the people I talk to in Iowa dont see any of that stuff on CNN or Hard ball, or Tucker or just dont care and really base the decision on who they like on seeing them in person, and what the gut feeling is. So dont get all worked up when you see an expert tell whats going to happen. Most people here will never see that.

Most want to unify the country, and want change. that really favors us.

Its awesome and we will keep working very hard!

Thank you for that Dan and for all of the hard work! Iowans are the most informed voters right now and the young people are the key to this victory. As an old codger, I have to give a little history. I come from an age when the middle class was huge and strong, the time before color TV, a time of manual typewriters and carbon copies, a time when our phones had cords! There were no analog clocks and my father was one of the very first computer programmers in the country (back when they were the size of your living room and did about 1/1000th of what they do now). We had JFK and then Bobby and the middle class was involved in politics and helped to change this country. After Viet Nam and Nixon, things began to change for the worse and I had lost interest in all things political. UNTIL NOW! Young people don't have the perspective to know that things can be much, much better for all of us. But, they must become involved and must get out to caucus. It is essential if you truly want a better life for all Americans (and the world). VERY true Dan! All of it! It is NINE DEGREES HERE right now. It's colder than ice! Thank you so much for coming to help us out, and for doing all you can! I'm so beside myself with these "kids" (sorry, but I'm old!) and how wonderfully mature they are!!! This gives me great hope for our future!!

So this morning I've done a load of laundry, started another crock of chili (actually I started the meat last night), and straightened up the house. Poor Barath will freeze when he hits the outdoors, so I'm going to start a warm breakfast for us, then we're off to Cedar Rapids to help finish up our last push stuff.

What an absolutely beautiful piece! If anyone in this nation understands this critical moment in history, it's Ken Burns, who has dedicated his life to studying America's past in his glorious films.
And I love the analogy he made between this election and the crises of 150 years ago. Now, as then, a broken country needs to be healed.
Just as Lincoln succeeded, Barack Obama can do the same.

Wow, that was GREAT! Someone with as much knowledge of history as Ken Burns has would know that it's the ability to inspire action and commitment that makes a good leader, and not a long political resume.

In two confident television appearances, on CNN and ABC, Clinton made an elementary error about Pakistani politics: She described President Pervez Musharraf as a "candidate" who would be "on the ballot." In fact, Musharraf was re-elected to the presidency in October. The upcoming elections are for parliament, and while Musharraf's party will be facing off against opposition parties, the president himself is not a candidate. Wait, she's an expert on foreign policy......

Yes, and what I noticed was shortly after the assassination, both Hillary and Edwards did things that I thought were inappropriate. Edwards' position right now is "former senator." Where does he get off calling Musharraf?

Hillary spent a good deal of time with Wolf Blitzer on her own network "calling" for an external investigation into the death of Bhutto because Musharraf couldn't be trusted.

Excuse me? "Calling for"??? She assumes the role of queen and has the hubris to use this on the world stage, in essence. How embarrassing! Just like her Christmas ad, where she was giving gifts like children's health care like she was the queen to give them out.

Obama's response, however, in that great interview on CNN, was to offer his educated and salient opinions on the matter and what needs to be done. I don't know, I just think it showed how classy he is.

Woo hoo Ben. My husband and I have been talking to our televisions (not so nicely I'm afraid)when we hear her say this. Wish one of the network 'experts' would mention this.

Also, apparently the Globe ran a story about Bhutto and corruption. There has been an overly rosy portrait of her leadership since her assassination. As always, the reality is more complicated than the portrayal by the media and the candidates.
