Yesterday, El Latino newspaper, the Iowa weekly Spanish-language newspaper with 15,000 readers, endorsed Senator Obama. El Latino is the first Spanish-language newspaper in Iowa to ever endorse a presidential candidate. This historic endorsement comes as the Iowa caucus approaches on January 3rd.

To Elect Barack Obama is to Elect a Better Future for Everyone
El Latino Newspaper is proud to be the first Latino newspaper in Iowa to make public our opinion on the future of the US. Like many members of the Latino community in Iowa, we work very hard to secure a better future for our families, we pay taxes, and contribute--- economically, socially, and culturally to our communities. Our work and civil duty gives us the right to evaluate all the presidential candidates—Democrats as well as Republicans and determine who is the person who best represents the interest of the Latino community and has the character and leadership to unite the nation for progress.
After carefully studying the presidential candidates, the editorial team at the El Latino, has decided to endorse Senator Barack Obama. Since Obama’s father was an immigrant and Obama is a minority in the US, he not only understands the Latino community, he feels it—the good and the bad. We identify with Obama and are convinced that he understands the issues that directly impact Latino families: issues like immigration, education, the War in Iraq, civil rights, and small business development.
The most important thing is that these issues get implemented in Congress. No other presidential candidate, particularly divisive candidates, can unite Congress and secure the votes to finally pass comprehensive immigration reform. We believe that Obama is the only candidate with the capability to change the immigration laws to keep our families together and give everyone the opportunity to pursue the American Dream.
We are proud once again to take this historic position in the state of Iowa. We know very well that an endorsement of a candidate is something controversial and that many people may not agree with. Although we are living in difficult times, we are also living in a time of much opportunity and hope. We believe that Obama is the candidate of hope and the future. We make the decision to endorse with conviction, bravery, and the confidence that he bests represents a better future for our families and community. We ask with all our heart that all members of the Latino community in Iowa attend that caucus to vote for Barack Obama, January 3 at 6:30pm.

Elegir a Barack Obama es elegir el mejor futuro para todos
El Latino Newspaper se enorgullece de ser el primer periódico de habla Hispana de Iowa que desea hacer pública su opinión sobre el futuro de los Estados Unidos, nuestro nuevo país. Como muchos miembros de la comunidad Latina en Iowa, trabajamos muy fuerte para sacar adelante a nuestras familias, pagamos impuestos, y contribuimos de manera económica, social, y culturalmente a nuestras comunidades. Nuestro trabajo y compromiso cívico nos da el derecho de evaluar a todos los candidatos presidenciales tanto Demócratas como Republicanos y determinar quien es la persona cuyas políticas representen mejor los intereses de la comunidad Latina y cuyo carácter y liderazgo sean lo suficientemente firmes para unir a la nación hacia el progreso.
Después de estudiar mucho a los candidatos presidenciales, el equipo editorial del Periódico Latino, El Latino Newspaper, ha decidido endosar al Senador Barack Obama. El hecho que Obama tenga un padre inmigrante y su experiencia como una minoría en los Estados Unidos lo predispone no solamente a entender la realidad de la comunidad Latina e inmigrante sino también sentir esta realidad tanto en las buenas como en las malas. Mas allá del hecho que nos identificamos con Barack Obama, estamos convencidos que el tiene las mejores posiciones en cuanto a políticas que tienen un impacto directo en las familias Latinas. Políticas como inmigración, educación de los niños, la guerra en Irak, los derechos civiles y el desarrollo de los pequeños negocios.
Lo más importante es lograr que estas políticas sean implementadas en el Congreso. Ningún otro candidato presidencial, particularmente candidatos divisivos van a lograr unir al Congreso y conseguir los votos Republicanos y Demócratas para finalmente lograr una reforma migratoria comprensiva. Nosotros confiamos que Obama es el único candidato presidencial capaz de cambiar las leyes migratorias para permitir que nuestras familias se unan y todos tengamos la oportunidad de alcanzar el sueño Americano.
Nos enorgullece otra vez, tomar esta posición histórica en el estado de Iowa. Sabemos muy bien que endorsar a un candidato es algo controversial y habrá mucha gente que no estará de acuerdo. Sin embargo, vivimos en tiempos difíciles pero también de mucha oportunidad y esperanza; nosotros creemos que Obama es el candidato de la esperanza y del futuro. Tomamos la decisión de endorsarlo con convicción, valentía, y principalmente con la confianza que el representa un mejor futuro para nuestras familias y toda la comunidad. Pedimos de todo corazón a los miembros ciudadanos de nuestra comunidad Latina en Iowa que asistan a los Caucuses** para votar por Barack Obama este 3 de Enero a las 6:30pm.
